Bengals | OC thinks Tony Pike is holding back    Sat May 12, 01:14 PM

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden thinks free-agent QB Tony Pike (Panthers) is holding back on his passes and is not throwing full strength because of two surgeries he has had on his right elbow. Pike is taking part in the team's rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. Gruden said Pike needs more time to get comfortable with the elbow.

Footballguys view: Pike is not an impressive QB and has put forth a lackluster effort during his short pro career. We don't feel he's anything more than a third-string QB at best even if he does develop his skill set.

Panthers | Tony Pike could start Week 11    Wed Nov 17, 09:37 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Tony Pike would start in Week 11 if QB Jimmy Clausen (concussion) were not cleared to play in the game, reports Pat Yasinskas, of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Tony Pike is also a rookie like Jimmy Clausen, but his skill set is much lower. Pike is a tall and lanky quarterback, who sees the field well and has good arm strength. However, he feels the rush when it's not there and is not a good leader.

Panthers | Not saying who will start Week 10    Mon Nov 8, 01:07 PM

Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox said either QB Jimmy Clausen or QB Tony Pike will start in Week 10, reports Darin Gantt, of the Rock Hill Herald.

Footballguys view: Our very own Cecil Lammey and Matt Waldman watched Pike up close during the week of practice at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL earlier this year and came away unimpressed. He is tall, and has a strong arm but fails to feel the rush and looks overwhelmed taking snaps under center.

Panthers | Tony Pike signed    Tue Jun 22, 04:38 PM

The Carolina Panthers have signed sixth-round draft choice QB Tony Pike, according to ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Tony Pike has the prototypical size and arm strength for a NFL QB. Some feel that he could challenge Jimmy Clausen for the starting job in the future, but we disagree. Pike needs to add 10-15 pounds of muscle to his frame, and needs to become more of a leader on the field. Pike also played primarily out of the shotgun in college, and must get used to dropping back and reading the defense at the same time. We see him as a career backup with limited upside.

Panthers | Tony Pike expected to practice Tuesday    Mon Jun 7, 06:57 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Tony Pike is expected to participate in practice Tuesday, June 8, after missing the previous workouts because his college did not have its graduation yet, reports CarolinaGrowl.com's Steve Reed.

Footballguys view: We hope this antiquated rule gets changed at some point in the near future. Pike should play as the third-string quarterback this year behind Matt Moore and fellow rookie Jimmy Clausen. Dynasty owners be careful not to overdraft Pike because he's a bigger project than most realize. He's tall and has a strong arm, but lacks leadership and needs to add about 20 lbs of muscle to his frame. Pike also ran the spread offense in college, and suffered two major injuries the last two seasons.

Panthers | Pike has work to do    Sun May 30, 04:32 PM

CBSSports.com reports Panthers rookie QB Jimmy Clausen was working with the second team offense on Thursday during OTA workouts ahead of Hunter Cantwell. It was expected Clausen would eventually move up to the No. 2 spot behind Matt Moore with Cantwell the No. 3 QB. Cantwell could also have some competition from rookie Tony Pike.

Footballguys view: Tony Pike is a tall quarterback with a strong arm, but he's far from making any sort of impact in the NFL. He needs to add about 20 lbs to his frame, and become more of a vocal leader on the field. At this point we see Pike as a developmental quarterback with limited upside.

NFL | Pike has worked out for several teams    Fri Apr 16, 12:36 PM

Aaron Wilson, of the National Football Post, reports University of Cincinnati QB Tony Pike has worked out for the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars and Seattle Seahawks, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Tony Pike is very tall, standing at 6'6" - but he needs to add about 20 lbs of muscle to his frame. He can make all the NFL throws, but looked lost at the Senior Bowl when he had to work from a traditional, drop back set. Questions also abound about Pike's lack of leadership on the field. He's a project quarterback with limited upside, and should be a mid- to late-round pick.

Panthers | NFL Draft possibilities    Thu Apr 15, 12:05 PM

The Carolina Panthers have drafted just one quarterback in the last eight years - Louisville's Stefan Le Flors - during the tenures of general manager Marty Hurney and head coach John Fox. The Panthers may not use their first pick this year, the 48th overall selection, on a quarterback because they also have pressing needs on the defensive line and at wide receiver. If they do choose a quarterback in the second round, it is likely to be Tim Tebow (Florida), Colt McCoy (Texas) or possibly Tony Pike (Cincinnati). QB Dan LeFevour (Central Michigan) could be available to them in the third or fourth round.

Footballguys view: Out of this group of quarterbacks, Dan LeFevour stands out as the best value. Tim Tebow is likely going to be a first-round pick, Colt McCoy could be an early second-round pick, and Tony Pike doesn't have the upside that LeFevour does. At Central Michigan LeFevour showcased his passing ability, and finished his college career with more touchdowns (150) than anyone else in Division I history. A former high school running back, LeFevour is not afraid to pull the ball down and pick up tough yards with his feet. His arm is strong enough to make all the NFL throws, and he's currently seen as a third-round pick with high upside.

NFL | Pike recently sprained thumb    Wed Apr 14, 08:48 PM

Joe Reedy, of The Cincinnati Enquirer, reports University of Cincinnati QB Tony Pike (thumb) did not participate in the Cincinnati Bengals workout for local prospects because he recently sprained the thumb on his throwing hand.

Footballguys view: This may drop Pike's draft status which wasn't that high to begin with. Pike is tall, but needs to add more weight to his frame. He has a good arm, but scouts question his leadership ability on the field. Pike is a project quarterback with good upside if he fully develops his skill set.

Browns | Will spend time with Pike    Fri Mar 26, 05:39 PM

Mary Kay Cabot, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports the Cleveland Browns have said they will spend extra time with University of Cincinnati QB Tony Pike.

Footballguys view: Pike is very tall but needs to add about 20 pounds of muscle to his frame. He has a rocket arm, but some scouts question his love for the game and his leadership ability.

Panthers | Have had private workout with Pike    Sat Mar 20, 12:00 AM

Aaron Wilson, of the National Football Post, reports the Carolina Panthers have had a private workout with Cincinnati QB Tony Pike, according to a source close to the program.

Footballguys view: Pike has great size and a live arm, but he needs to add about 20 more pounds of muscle to his frame. The big quarterback also needs to prove to scouts that he can be a more vocal leader on the field, and command a huddle at the next level.

Patriots | Working out Pike, Gilyard    Tue Mar 16, 02:22 PM

Joe Reedy, of The Cincinnati Enquirer, reports the New England Patriots are working out University of Cincinnati QB Tony Pike and WR Mardy Gilyard Tuesday, March 16.

Footballguys view: Gilyard is an exciting prospect and can take over a game when the football is in his hands. Pike is a tall QB that needs to show more fire for the game in addition to adding about 20 lbs of muscle to his frame.

Aaron Wilson, of the National Football Post, reports the Denver Broncos conducted a private workout with University of Cincinnati QB Tony Pike and WR Mardy Gilyard Thursday, March 11, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Denver is looking for a quarterback of the future, and Tom Brandstater doesn't appear to be that guy. Pike is a huge quarterback, standing at 6'6", but he needs to add more weight to his frame.

NFL | Pike tweaking his delivery    Wed Mar 10, 07:57 PM

Joe Reedy, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cincinnati QB Tony Pike has been tweaking his delivery slightly in how he holds the ball since the NFL Scouting Combine. Pike said, "Just from talking to guys they were happy with what they saw. It's an ongoing process to get on the same page."

Footballguys view: Pike proved to be a bigger project than some had expected with his struggles at the Senior Bowl in Mobile. He has a big arm, and throws a great deep pass. His frame is tall, but he's not as filled out as he needs to be and could add about 15 pounds of muscle. He played in a wide open offense at Cincinnati and seemed uncomfortable when coaches asked him to drop back in a traditional set. Pike also failed to make quick decisions with the football when going through his progressions, and generally holds on to the football too long.

NFL | Pike will do full workout at NFL Combine    Sat Feb 27, 02:53 AM

Cincinnati QB Tony Pike said he is going to do a full workout at the NFL Scouting Combine. Pike said, "I'm not going to let the opportunity go by. 32 teams out there, as a quarterback you want to throw."

Footballguys view: With so many quarterbacks (like Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, Dan LeFevour, Colt McCoy) Pike could elevate his draft stock with a good performance in Indianapolis.

NFL | Two from Cincinnati invited to NFL Combine    Tue Feb 2, 10:30 PM

NFLCombine.net reports University of Cincinnati WR Mardy Gilyard and QB Tony Pike have been invited to participate in the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine Feb. 24 to March 2.

Footballguys view: Gilyard is ultra quick, and got better as practice went on down in Mobile at the Senior Bowl. Pike looks like more of a project than originally thought. He is tall and has a good arm, but needs to be more aggressive when throwing the football.
