Jets | Mark Sanchez working with Chad Pennington Sat Mar 3, 10:34 AM
New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez has been working free-agent QB Chad Pennington (Dolphins) to learn offensive coordinator Tony Sparano's scheme. Pennington brought an old Miami Dolphins playbook and began teaching the system and terminology to Sanchez. The two quarterbacks met more than once for classroom-type sessions.
Footballguys view: This is a make or break year for Sanchez. It's good to see that he's taking full advantage of working with a veteran like Pennington. |

Dolphins | Chad Pennington plans to sit out 2011 season Sat Jun 18, 03:46 PM
Miami Dolphins impending free-agent QB Chad Pennington (knee) said he is planning to sit out the 2011 season and do some work for Fox Sports. He said he has not had any noticeable setbacks in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Footballguys view: It wouldn't surprise us to see Pennington back in the league after sitting out this season. He's not a starting caliber QB but could provide valuable veteran depth behind a younger player. |

Dolphins | Chad Pennington could receive interest Sun May 22, 02:25 PM
Miami Dolphins impending free-agent QB Chad Pennington (knee) could receive interest if he shows interest in the rehab from his knee injury once free agency begins and if it appears like he would be ready for the start of the season. Pennington suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament while playing basketball in March.
Footballguys view: Pennington is a savvy veteran quarterback who could add quality depth to a team needing help at the position. We think teams with rookie or second-year starters would be interested in Pennington. Tennessee and Minnesota could be among the interested teams. |

Miami Dolphins QB Chad Pennington (knee) said in an e-mail over the weekend that his knee surgery April 7 went well, and he is already off crutches, reports Ben Volin, of the Palm Beach Post. Pennington had surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Footballguys view: Pennington is in the twilight of his career but should be able to stick around for at least one more year as a backup with the Dolphins. |

Dolphins | Chad Pennington hopes to be ready in four months Thu Apr 21, 02:05 PM
Miami Dolphins QB Chad Pennington (knee) said Dr. James Andrews told him that he has a chance to play football again in four months, which would mean a return in August or September, reports Omar Kelly, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Pennington said he is not sure if that is an optimistic timetable but is working to accomplish it. He has a brace on his knee but is able to walk without any crutches. He said his rehab should not be very challenging because it was a clean tear.
Footballguys view: Pennington is in the twilight of his career, but could stick with the Dolphins because of his work ethic and knowledge of the game. It wouldn't surprise us if Pennington became a coach after his playing days are over. |

Miami Dolphins QB Chad Pennington (knee) is scheduled for knee surgery Thursday, April 7, reports Armando Salguero, of The Miami Herald. Pennington isn't ruling anything out, including playing in 2011.

Dolphins | Chad Pennington needs ACL surgery Thu Mar 31, 02:36 PM
Miami Dolphins impending free-agent QB Chad Pennington (knee) will need to undergo surgery after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament during a pick-up basketball game, reports Chris Mortensen, of ESPN.
Footballguys view: A cautionary tale that we seemingly come across every year. Last year it was OT Ryan Clady who injured himself in a pickup basketball game. Pennington should just hang up his cleats and move on to the next chapter of his life. It will be difficult for him to catch on with a team when he finally gets healthy. |

Dolphins | Chad Pennington, Tyler Thigpen future uncertain with team Tue Jan 25, 10:33 PM
Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland said Tuesday, Jan. 25, that it is uncertain whether backup QBs Chad Pennington and Tyler Thigpen will return in 2011, reports Ben Volin, of the Palm Beach Post.
Footballguys view: Pennington still wants to play, but many feel he's better off retiring as he's been unable to stay healthy in recent years. If Thigpen does not return to the team we have a feeling Chan Gailey would want to bring him aboard the Buffalo Bills. |

Dolphins | Chad Pennington may be re-signed Tue Jan 18, 07:41 PM
Miami Dolphins QB Chad Pennington (shoulder), who is set to become a free agent during the offseason, said he has accepted the possibility of signing with another team, reports The Associated Press. He also realizes no team may be interested in him, which he is OK with. The Dolphins may be inclined to re-sign him, as he has ties to Brian Daboll, who is expected to be signed as the team's offensive coordinator. Pennington, who is trying to return from a fourth surgery on his throwing shoulder, said his recovery will be a daily and weekly process and there may be a point his body simply cannot go on any further with rehab. He noted he still has the desire and passion to play, so he has to see what his options are provided his body is able to hold up physically.

Dolphins | Chad Pennington to attempt comeback Tue Jan 18, 12:32 AM
Miami Dolphins QB Chad Pennington (shoulder) said Monday, Jan. 17, that he plans to attempt a comeback from a fourth shoulder surgery during the offseason, reports Ben Volin, of the Palm Beach Post. 'I'm going to make a run at it, and the reason I am is that I still have that fire inside,' Pennington said. 'I have to go out and see if my shoulder can respond. If it doesn't respond, I can live with that.'
Footballguys view: Pennington is a seasoned veteran, but is in danger of not making the team. His shoulder has prevented him from making much of an impact over the last few years. |

Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano has named Chad Pennington as the team's starting quarterback in Week 10 in place of QB Chad Henne, reports Armando Salguero, of The Miami Herald.
Footballguys view: Wow. Things change pretty quickly around here. Sparano may have watched 'Hot Tub Time Machine' too much over the last week, as the Dolphins are going back to the past with Pennington. Expect two things to happen with Pennington under center. 1) The 'Phins will be more run heavy than before and grind down the clock with Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown. 2) Miami will make more of an emphasis to get Brandon Marshall open, and use him on underneath routes. |

Dolphins | No rush to decide fate of QBs Wed Jun 23, 06:23 PM
Barry Jackson, from the Miami Herald, reports Chad Pennington, back from shoulder surgery, has said he will be ready for the season. But if he opened the regular season on the physically-unable-to-perform list (out at least six weeks), that would give Miami more time to make a decision while continuing to evaluate White on gimmick plays and otherwise. And though Miami prefers to keep Tyler Thigpen, he would have value in a trade if another team's quarterback gets injured. So the Dolphins are in no rush to decide.
Footballguys view: Tyler Thigpen would be a great fit in Buffalo where he could be reunited with his old offensive coordinator from Kansas City, Chan Gailey. The Dolphins may not want to upgrade a division rival with a trade, but could move Thigpen if the price is right. |

Dolphins | Thigpen likely to be dealt? Mon Apr 12, 11:20 AM
Pro Football Weekly reports, according to sources, the Miami Dolphins are not expected to head into the 2010 season with four quarterbacks on the roster. With QB Chad Henne firmly entrenched as the starter, QBs Tyler Thigpen, Chad Pennington and Pat White are the candidates to be moved. Thigpen appears to be the most likely to be traded, and the Dolphins would like to move him before the NFL Draft. However, teams in need of a backup could wait until closer to training camp to make a swap to fill that hole, and there's a good chance the Dolphins will have to wait a bit longer to find a suitor.
Footballguys view: Tyler Thigpen would be a threat to Pat White's job if both were to stay with the team through training camp. Now that Chad Pennington is staying in Miami it created a logjam of quarterbacks behind starter Chad Henne. Thigpen had good success in Kansas City under current Bills head coach Chan Gailey, so the Buffalo is a possible landing spot for the crafty quarterback. |

Dolphins | Henne welcomes competition for starting job Tue Mar 2, 10:31 AM
Omar Kelly, of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, reports Miami Dolphins QB Chad Henne is not scared of competition for the team's starting quarterback job, and he doesn't care if it comes from QB Chad Pennington should he be re-signed by the team. Henne has been pushing for Pennington's return. 'I'd love it. I love Chad to death,' Henne said when asked about Pennington possibly returning to the Dolphins. 'Whatever happens, happens. I learned so much from him. If he's with us, I'll learn even more. It's a great opportunity if he comes back. We'll welcome him back.'
Footballguys view: The Dolphins could bring back Pennington because of his familiarity of the offense and veteran leadership. Pat White would be the second string quarterback if Pennington doesn't come back, and he doesn't pose any threat for the starting job. |
