Giants | Curtis Painter practices as backup Mon Aug 11, 04:06 PM
New York Giants QB Curtis Painter practiced with the second-team ahead of QB Ryan Nassib.
Footballguys view: Nassib is the second-year quarterback who needs to beat out Painter if he wants to make the final roster. We would be surprised if the team kept three quarterbacks this season. |

Giants | Ryan Nassib top candidate for No. 2 QB job Fri Jul 18, 09:42 PM
New York Giants QB Ryan Nassib is entering training camp as the leading candidate for the No. 2 quarterback job and probably will have to really struggle to lose the job to QB Curtis Painter.
Footballguys view: Nassib is a second-year quarterback the Giants are hoping to develop as a potential starter in the future. He spins a nice football, but Nassib will have to beat out the veteran Painter to be the primary backup behind Eli Manning. The Giants are unlikely to keep three quarterbacks on the roster this year. |

Giants | Would like Ryan Nassib to win No. 2 QB job Mon Jun 30, 02:12 PM
The New York Giants would like QB Ryan Nassib to defeat QB Curtis Painter for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp. The team would like to keep two quarterbacks on their final roster but may keep three if Nassib is not able to win the backup job. The team could also consider releasing Nassib if he does not win the job.
Footballguys view: The Giants would like Nassib to be a developmental quarterback with starter's upside. If he can't beat out veteran Curtis Painter in training camp, then it's not a good sign of his current ability. Fantasy owners in deep dynasty leagues need to monitor Nassib's progress. |

Giants | Coach praises Curtis Painter Fri Jun 27, 12:26 PM
New York Giants QB Curtis Painter got praise from quarterbacks coach Danny Langsdorf for how he has stayed prepared with only limited opportunities. 'He doesn't get very many reps,' Langsdorf said of Painter. 'But fundamentally he's really improved. He's a very accurate thrower and that's his strength. He's gotten more work lately and he's a veteran guy. He knows what that entails and he's done a great job prepping himself. With the limited reps he's gotten, he makes sure he stays sharp.'
Footballguys view: Painter has been around the league for a while, and he does a good job of preparing himself and working hard. He'll compete with second-year quarterback Ryan Nassib for the QB2 job with the Giants behind starter Eli Manning. |

Giants | Ryan Nassib works as backup Wed May 28, 09:33 PM
New York Giants QB Ryan Nassib was working as the primary backup to QB Eli Manning (ankle) during practice Wednesday, May 28, in organized team activities (OTAs). QB Curtis Painter (knee) and QB Josh Freeman also took reps.
Footballguys view: It's really hard to know exactly how to take this, other than perhaps everyone is going to get a shot. On the one hand, Nassib getting those reps is a sign the team is confident enough in his progress to give him a chance to prove himself. On the other hand, this may just be the result of Josh Freeman not knowing the playbook yet and knowing what they have in Painter. We expect Nassib to have to put together a strong preseason and training camp (last year's was not good) in order to win the backup job. This is critical as the Giants tend to hold just a pair of quarterbacks on the roster and if he doesn't win that job, he could end up on the cut list. |

Giants | Curtis Painter takes part in OTAs Wed May 28, 03:58 PM
New York Giants QB Curtis Painter (knee) participated in organized team activities Wednesday, May 28.
Footballguys view: Painter is competing for the backup job behind Eli Manning. His competition for the position includes former first-round pick Josh Freeman and second-year pro Ryan Nassib. The Giants are likely to only carry two quarterbacks, and we don't think Painter will be one of them. |

Giants | Keeping options open on Ryan Nassib Thu May 1, 03:51 PM
New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese said he is keeping his options open when it comes to QB Ryan Nassib. 'We like Nassib, but he really hasn't had the chance to do a lot for us, and so we're going to take a real good look at him in the spring. We still think he's a really good player. He hasn't had the chance to play yet, but he's going to get a lot of work this spring, and obviously he'll get a lot of work in the preseason. Along with Curtis Painter and Josh Freeman there's competition.'
Footballguys view: When the Giants picked up Josh Freeman and Curtis Painter, some felt that it spelled doom for second-year player Ryan Nassib, but perhaps not. It could be that the Giants are trying to raise Nassib's trade value, or it could be they like him but don't want to risk the season with an unproven commodity if Manning gets hurt. If Nassib does get traded, it's likely in the next week as we head to the draft. |

Giants | Curtis Painter undergoes surgery Mon Apr 28, 02:17 PM
New York Giants QB Curtis Painter (knee) underwent knee surgery Friday, April 25. Painter is expected to be sidelined for around four weeks.

Giants | Coach says Curtis Painter won No. 2 QB job Sun Sep 1, 11:51 AM
New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said the team decided to keep QB Curtis Painter over QB David Carr because Painter performed better during the preseason. 'We simply based it on the preseason,' Coughlin said. 'From the standpoint of all the evaluations, it pointed to the fact that Painter had a better preseason.'
Footballguys view: Eli Manning is one of the most durable quarterbacks in the league, so we are only slightly more likely to see Painter this year as we are to see Carr, even if Carr remains a free agent for the entire season. |

QB David Carr will be the second quarterback in, but Coughlin did not say if QB Curtis Painter or QB Ryan Nassib will be the third quarterback.

Giants | Two work out Fri Nov 16, 09:00 AM
The New York Giants worked out RB Ryan Torain and QB Curtis Painter this week.
Footballguys view: The Giants have been working out running backs during their bye week, which is potentially a bad sign for Ahmad Bradshaw. Andre Brown should be rostered in all leagues. He would take over as the feature back if Bradshaw is out, and Brown can play all three downs. First-round pick David Wilson is still not ready for a large role by most accounts. |

Ravens | Battle at backup quarterback? Tue Aug 7, 05:53 PM
Baltimore Ravens QB Curtis Painter is challenging QB Tyrod Taylor for the team's No. 2 quarterback duties during training camp. Taylor is a dual-threat option at quarterback, able to make plays with his legs, while Painter is more of a pocket passer. Painter has had bouts of erratic play and thrown plenty of interceptions. Thus far, Painter has not made a strong case for the team to carry three quarterbacks into the regular season.
Footballguys view: Painter is comfortable with Ravens QB coach Jim Caldwell (his former head coach at Indianapolis). Taylor's skill set is better but he's extremely raw as a passer. |

Indianapolis Colts QB Curtis Painter completed 13 of 30 passes for 281 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 4 game Monday, Oct. 3, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in his first NFL start. He also lost a fumble. Painter's 87-yard TD pass to WR Pierre Garcon in the second quarter was the first scoring strike of his career. It was the longest first TD pass to start a career since Pittsburgh Steelers QB Charlie Batch, then of the Detroit Lions, had a 98-yard TD throw to start his career back in 1998.
Footballguys view: Painter zeroed in on Garcon when he came in during the week 3 game vs. Pittsburgh, so this wasn't shocking. He is clearly a better option than Kerry Collins, although he still looked nervous at times and should probably be considered a bottom of the barrel fantasy option. |
