NFL | Dan Orlovsky calls it a career    Wed Oct 11, 12:21 PM

Free-agent QB Dan Orlovsky (Rams) announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday, Oct. 11.

Footballguys view: Orlovsky had a long NFL career, but he didn't appear in that many games. A fifth-round pick of the Lions (2005), Orlovsky started 12 career games (seven in 2008 for Detroit and five for the Colts in 2011). He finishes his pro career with 3,132 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Rams | Finalized cuts by Rams    Sat Sep 2, 04:44 PM

The Los Angeles Rams waived WR K.D. Cannon, RB Aaron Green, WR Paul McRoberts, FB Sam Rogers, WR Shakeir Ryan, WR Brandon Shippen, WR Nelson Spruce, RB Lenard Tillery and TE Travis Wilson Saturday, Sept. 2. Spruce and Tillery were waived with injury settlements. TE Corey Harkey and QB Dan Orlovsky were terminated. TE Temarrick Hemingway (leg) was placed on Reserve/Injured, and RB Lance Dunbar was placed on the Reserve/ Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: We'd like to see the Rams keep Spruce on the practice squad. If healthy, Spruce could make some plays as an underneath receiver in the McVay system.

Rams | Dan Orlovsky joins Rams     Thu Jul 20, 04:46 PM

Free-agent QB Dan Orlovsky (Lions) agreed to a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams Thursday, July 20.

Footballguys view: We're not sure how much we'd feel comfortable with Orlovsky under center and as Jared Goff the starter isn't even really someone we'd be anxious to have on a redraft roster.

Lions | Dan Orlovsky might not return    Sun Feb 12, 11:54 AM

The Detroit Lions may decide to move on from backup QB Dan Orlovsky, who is scheduled to become a free agent next month. Matthew Stafford and Jake Rudock are the only other quarterbacks on the team's roster, so another NFL veteran or college prospect is likely to be brought in if Orlovsky does not return.

Footballguys view: It's not a great quarterback class in the 2017 NFL draft, but the Lions should take a camp arm at least into minicamp. They may add another quarterback late in the draft or perhaps even as a college free agent. Orlovsky isn't going to the market with a ton of interest, but any team in need of a veteran backup will give him a look.

Lions | Jake Rudock pushing for backup job    Sun Aug 21, 10:56 PM

Detroit Lions QB Jake Rudock and QB Dan Orlovsky will be judged on their total body of work, and 'the best player' will win the backup quarterback job, head coach Jim Caldwell said.

Footballguys view: This isn't a great backup situation. Rudock is tough and played with a ton of moxie in college at Michigan (and Iowa), but we don't know of any fantasy leagues that give points for moxie. From a talent standpoint, the rookie QB doesn't have a strong arm and needs better anticipation when going through his reads. However, he is accurate on short-to-intermediate throws and what scouts call a 'rhythm' passer. We'll be monitoring his progress -- but only in the deepest dynasty leagues.

Lions | Last year for Dan Orlovsky?    Sun Jul 24, 01:49 AM

Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky remains the backup seeing second-team reps in the spring, but he is only signed through 2016 and does not have a future in Detroit. The team drafted QB Jake Rudock in the sixth round and he looked competent in minicamp.

Footballguys view: Orlovsky isn't the worst backup in the league, but he's not exactly inspiring confidence, either. The Lions have a quarterback-centric offense, and they would be in bad shape if Matthew Stafford goes down.

Lions | Dan Orlovsky's job safe?     Mon Jun 13, 07:55 AM

Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky may have a lock on the No. 2 job despite the presence of QB Jake Rudock on the roster. Lions coach Jim Caldwell and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter were singing Orlovsky's praises after OTAs ended last week.

Footballguys view: Orlovsky or Rudock isn't really a battle that fantasy owners...even dynasty owners...should be watching. We'll be monitoring Rudock as the preseason goes along, but that's only for super-deep dynasty leagues. Rudock has plenty of experience from his days in college at Michigan, but he's merely a technically sound passer who struggles to drive the ball deep, lead receivers properly or throw accurately on passes to the opposite side of the field.

Lions | Matthew Stafford pulled in blowout    Sun Oct 11, 06:19 PM

Detroit Lions WR Matthew Stafford was benched late in the third quarter of the Week 5 game against the Arizona Cardinals, down 35-7. QB Dan Orlovsky replaced him.

Footballguys view: Stafford had gotten careless with the football one time too many for Jim Caldwell's liking. The Lions are in freefall mode with Chicago coming to town next week. Stafford has not looked like a good fit with Caldwell or offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.

Lions | Backup QB battle in Detroit    Sat Jul 18, 06:03 PM

Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky may lose his job as the Lions' backup quarterback. QB Kellen Moore has a chance to win the job after taking a large share of the second-team reps this offseason. Orlovsky ranked No. 29 in an NFL.com ranking of all 32 backup quarterbacks.

Footballguys view: Moore doesn't have a rocket arm, but he's a smart quarterback who can throw short routes accurately. We don't have a lot of appreciation for either quarterback in dynasty leagues...even those with super deep rosters. We'll see if Orlovsky or Moore can look better in preseason than we expect.

Lions | Dan Orlovsky re-signs    Mon Mar 2, 03:50 PM

Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky was re-signed Monday, March 2. Details of the contract were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Orlovsky will once again be the backup quarterback behind Matthew Stafford. We wouldn't expect a whole lot if Orlovsky was forced into the starting lineup due to injury. Even his dynasty value in the deepest of leagues is barely existent.

Lions | Kellen Moore making case    Fri Aug 29, 03:14 AM

Detroit Lions QB Kellen Moore was 17 of 28 for 172 yards and two touchdowns in a shutout of the Buffalo Bills Thursday, Aug. 28. It is not known yet whether he will overtake QB Dan Orlovsky for No. 2 on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: Moore has been hanging around with the Lions after his record-setting college career at Boise State. He lacks arm strength, but he has accuracy when throwing withing 12 yards of the line of scrimmage.

Lions | Dan Orlovsky likely will be No. 2 QB    Mon Jul 14, 04:23 PM

Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky likely will be the primary backup quarterback this upcoming season unless he suffers an injury during the preseason.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Losing Shaun Hill (Rams) in free agency may sting if Matthew Stafford gets injured. Orlovsky is a seasoned veteran, and he's a better option than weak-armed Kellen Moore and raw (but athletic) rookie James Franklin.

  NFL | Veteran-heavy 2015 UFA QB class    Sun Jun 15, 12:26 PM

The NFL's scheduled unrestricted free-agent quarterback class for 2015 features 14 players who will be at least 30 years of age, including Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Hasselbeck (39), St. Louis Rams QB Shaun Hill (35), Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (35), New York Jets QB Michael Vick (34), Cincinnati Bengals QB Jason Campbell (33), New Orleans Saints QB Luke McCown (33), Seattle Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson (32), Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (31), Oakland Raiders QB Trent Edwards (31), Chicago Bears QB Jordan Palmer (31), Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky (31), Cleveland Browns QB Tyler Thigpen (31) and Miami Dolphins QB Matt Moore (30). Estranged Dallas Cowboys QB Kyle Orton (32) is also scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, although he is reportedly leaning toward retirement.

Footballguys view: Any team looking for a solid veteran backup will have plenty to choose from. The only one of this list who could still be an effective starter is Carson Palmer. We'll see if Arizona tries to sign him to a new deal if he impresses in 2014.

Lions | Likely to keep three QBs    Sat Jun 14, 04:23 PM

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell hinted that he's likely to keep three quarterbacks on the roster. 'It's tough to go into these days, this day and age, with the way in which our game is, without a third quarterback,' Caldwell said. QB Kellen Moore is slated to be behind backup QB Dan Orlovsky.

Footballguys view: Moore hasn't shown much during his pro career. He set records at Boise State and has good accuracy on short passes. However, his arm strength is a real setback for him as a pro. Missouri QB James Franklin is on the depth chart, but he's not much of a threat for Moore. Nothing much to see from Lions backup QBs in deep dynasty leagues.

Lions | Expected to add Dan Orlovsky    Wed Apr 2, 03:44 PM

The Detroit Lions are expected to sign free-agent QB Dan Orlovsky (Buccaneers).

Footballguys view: The team lost Shaun Hill (Rams) in free agency, so they need a veteran backup behind Matthew Stafford. Orlovsky began his pro career with the Lions when he was a fifth-round pick in 2005. He played in Detroit for three seasons before moving on. Their interest in Orlovsky shows that third-string QB Kellen Moore hasn't made the necessary improvements to his game.

Buccaneers | Mike Glennon to start preseason game    Wed Aug 28, 04:33 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano said QB Mike Glennon will start the final preseason game and will receive a significant amount of playing time. QB Dan Orlovsky said he hopes to receive playing time during the game.

Footballguys view: Glennon could be in for a bigger role next year if the team lets QB Josh Freeman walk in free agency. The rookie has a big arm, sees the field well, and isn't afraid to challenge defenses vertically. Glennon needs mechanical work to clean up his spotty accuracy.

The team is still trying to work a trade for CB Darrelle Revis (Jets). Adding Revis would mean they'd have to give him a new long-term deal as he's set to be a free agent in 2014.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Dan Orlovsky and Brett Ratliff will compete for the primary backup quarterback job during training camp. The team likely will decide whether to keep two or three quarterbacks on their final roster based on how Orlovsky and Ratliff perform.

Footballguys view: Orlovsky has more experience, but Ratliff has a better natural skill set. The edge has to go to Orlovsky right now, but keep an eye on this battle in training camp. Ratliff's incredibly strong arm could work well in the play action system new Bucs head coach Greg Schiano has installed.
