Colts | Indy adds Branden Oliver, Matt Hazel Sun Aug 12, 07:31 PM
Free-agent RB Branden Oliver (Chargers) and WR Matt Hazel (Browns) signed with the Indianapolis Colts Sunday, Aug. 12. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The team also placed WR Deon Cain (knee) on the Reserve/Injured list and waived WR Dres Anderson.
Footballguys view: Oliver is a solid all-around back, but an achilles tear might have robbed him of his ceiling. Still, with the Colts backfield mostly banged up, it is worth tracking any competent back on the roster - even Christine Michael. |

Bills | Buffalo interested in Branden Oliver Fri Jul 13, 04:09 PM
Free-agent RB Branden Oliver (Chargers) is receiving interest from the Buffalo Bills, and the team is looking into scheduling a workout with Oliver, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Oliver is a local hero and the Bills obviously could be in need of help at running back with LeSean McCoy's potential legal troubles. This is still going to be a tough situation for a street free agent to make a fantasy impact this year. |

Chargers | Branden Oliver impressive in OTAs Wed May 24, 11:17 PM
San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver has caught the attention of QB Philip Rivers this spring.
Footballguys view: Oliver hurt his Achilles' last August and missed the 2016 season. It sounds like he's back to full strength as Rivers was raving about him in OTAs. Oliver will compete with guys like Kenneth Farrow and Kenjon Barner to be the change-of-pace back behind Melvin Gordon. |

Chargers | Two Chargers RBs could be third down back Wed May 3, 02:49 PM
Los Angeles Chargers RBs Branden Oliver and Kenjon Barner appear to be the leading candidates for the third down back role this upcoming season.
Footballguys view: Either one could work as a change-of-pace back behind Melvin Gordon. Fantasy owners are looking at Gordon as RB6 (1.10) in 12-team PPR leagues right now. Oliver and/or Barner are going to replace Danny Woodhead (Ravens) this year, and there's a bit of fantasy value there...especially in PPR leagues. We'll watch this battle unfold in training camp. |

Chargers | Branden Oliver should return Tue Jan 17, 10:43 AM
Los Angeles Chargers restricted free-agent RB Branden Oliver (Achilles') has a good chance to return to the team.
Footballguys view: The Chargers could place a low-round tender on Oliver, and they'd likely be able to keep him at that price. When healthy, Oliver could work as a change-of-pace back behind Melvin Gordon. With Danny Woodhead set to be a free agent, the Chargers need a backup plan. |

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver (Achilles') suffered an Achilles' tendon injury during the preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings Sunday, Aug. 28, and will not return.
Footballguys view: Dreamius Smith and Kenneth Farrow are the next men up and one of them is going to win an opening day roster spot unless the Chargers bring in a veteran released by another team. Oliver is a good all-around back and he was poised to have value if Danny Woodhead or Melvin Gordon got hurt this year. |

Chargers | Branden Oliver looking good Wed Jun 15, 06:49 PM
San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver (toe) practiced the way he played before his toe injury Wednesday, June 15, according to The San Diego Tribune's Tom Krasovic.
Footballguys view: Oliver has done a good job when he needed to step up and he could push Melvin Gordon for time if the latter is too slow in recovering from surgery. As of now he's not worth a roster spot, but keep an eye on him if anything goes sideways in Gordon's recovery. |

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver (toe) was able to make cuts during organized team activities Monday, June 6, and does not appear to be bothered by the toe injury that ended his 2015 season early.
Footballguys view: Oliver can be a spot starter for the Chargers if needed. He can help lighten the workload of Melvin Gordon as the second-year pro continues to recover from microfracture knee surgery from earlier this year. |

Chargers | Chargers leaning towards RB committee Fri May 27, 02:38 PM
San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead and Branden Oliver will each be 'used to their strengths' in the upcoming season in helping comprise a committee, according to running backs coach Ollie Wilson. 'Those guys can do a lot of different things and they have all bought in to working together and having their own role instead of being (angry) not getting all the touches,' he said. 'They understand we don't have just one starter here. They are all part of our scheme and system.'
Footballguys view: Fantasy owners are anticipating this according to the latest ADP for the Chargers backs. The news of Gordon's microfracture knee surgery has caused his draft stock to take a tumble. He currently sits at RB27 (6.07) while Woodhead is at RB24 (5.10) in 12-team PPR leagues. |

Footballguys view: Whisenhunt said there will be times that two of the running backs will be on the field at the same time. The team will have packages for each running back so they can put them in positions where they will succeed. This RBBC may be something fantasy owners want to avoid. However, Woodhead should once again provide value for players in PPR leagues. |

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver (toe) is wearing a walking boot and is using crutches because of a turf toe injury. He is not sure if he will be able to play in the Week 9 game against the Chicago Bears Monday, Nov. 9.
Footballguys view: Turf toe injuries always linger, and we're not expecting much from Oliver if he's able to play by some miracle in Week 9. The Chargers rushing attack isn't robust anyway. |

Chargers | San Diego to use committee at RB Wed Sep 2, 08:07 PM
San Diego Chargers RBs Melvin Gordon, Danny Woodhead, Branden Oliver and Donald Brown will be part of a committee at running back this season, according to QB Philip Rivers. 'As Coach has always said -- I'm not saying anything out of the blue -- it's a running back by committee crew,' Rivers said. 'It's going to be a team effort in that bunch. We're going to need all of them to carry the load in the run game and to catch the ball out of the backfield.'
Footballguys view: Message! Danny Woodhead is going to produce for PPR fantasy owners. Melvin Gordon is their hot rookie, but he's been struggling to impress in the preseason. As their 2015 first-round pick, Gordon will get every opportunity to prove himself as the lead back. However, he's struggled in pass-protection and is not as good of a receiver as Woodhead is. Start moving Gordon down your draft lists. |

Chargers | Melvin Gordon to be eased in? Thu Apr 30, 10:59 PM
San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon isn't going to be expected to be an every-down back as a rookie, and RB Danny Woodhead and RB Branden Oliver will still have roles.
Footballguys view: Woodhead should still have a role as a change-of-pace back, but why move up for Gordon in the first round if you're going to ease him in? We think Gordon could lead all rookie rushers this year in terms of rushing yards. |

Chargers | Branden Oliver bulking up Sun Apr 26, 12:21 AM
San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver said he wants to break more tackles in 2015 and has spent the offseason working on his power and strength.
Footballguys view: Awesome. He's still a change-of-pace back at best. Oliver took the fantasy world by storm--briefly--last year, and he drew plenty of comparisons to Darren Sproles. He's not quite as dangerous or explosive as Sproles, but Oliver can be used effectively as a reserve runner and receiver out of the backfield. |

Chargers | Ryan Mathews fine to play? Fri Dec 12, 05:43 PM
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle), who hasn't practiced all week and is listed as questionable for Week 15 against the Denver Broncos, could still be part of the game plan Sunday, Dec. 14, according to head coach Mike McCoy. "He'll be fine," McCoy said. "He's played plenty of football in his career, and he knows what to do. He's been here. He's been in the system for the two years we've been here together, so he'll be fine." RB Branden Oliver handled the bulk of the work when Mathews missed seven games this year, but since, he's had just 144 yards in six games.
Footballguys view: Mathews not being able to practice indicates otherwise. The game is a late starter, so you'll need one of the Chargers backs, or someone like Darren Sproles or Pierre Thomas from a night game to hedge. |

San Diego Chargers RB Branden Oliver saw just six snaps in Week 13, the least amount of snaps he's had all season.

Chargers | Bolts managing Ryan Mathews' touches Mon Nov 24, 07:32 PM
San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee, shoulder) has 175 rushing yards in two games since returning from a knee injury, but he's carried the ball an average of 14 times in those two games, with just four carries in the fourth quarter and two in the red zone. Head coach Mike McCoy said that team is monitoring Mathews' touches as he makes his way back from injury. RBs Branden Oliver and Donald Brown are still being sprinkled in. Mathews suffered a shoulder injury in the second half but returned to the game, and the injury isn't considered serious.
Footballguys view: It's wise for the team to treat Mathews this way. He's a talented back, but Mathews has been oft-injured during his pro career. As he gets healthier, his role could increase. |
