49ers | Tavon Austin, JJ Nelson officially signed Sat Aug 15, 04:54 PM
Free-agent WR Tavon Austin (Cowboys) and WR JJ Nelson (Raiders) signed with the San Francisco 49ers Saturday, Aug. 15. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The team also waived TE Daniel Helm and waived WR Chris X. Thompson (undisclosed) with an injury designation.
Footballguys view: The 49ers are in need of wide receiver help due to opting out and injuries at the position. Austin can work all over field as a rushing and receiving threat if he makes the team. Nelson has speed to get downfield in a hurry. Both of these veterans have to be considered long-shots to make the 53-man roster. |

Free agents WRs Tavon Austin (Cowboys) and JJ Nelson (Raiders) are expected to sign Friday, Aug. 14, with the San Francisco 49ers, pending results of physicals, per a league source.
Footballguys view: The 49ers clearly want to add speed since they lost Travis Benjamin to an opt out and Richie James probably won't be ready to begin the regular season. Either of these vets could make the team over Dante Pettis, who is having a quiet camp so far. |

The Oakland Raiders have declared WR JJ Nelson, OT Brandon Parker, QB DeShone Kizer, WR Dwayne Harris, DE Clelin Ferrell, WR Tyrell Williams and OG Gabe Jackson inactive for Week 5.

Nelson's speed will be utilized to stretch the defense, but he's best left on the waiver wire for now in most leagues. |

Raiders | JJ Nelson moving to Oakland Fri Mar 15, 02:18 PM
Free-agent JJ Nelson (Cardinals) signed an undisclosed contract with the Oakland Raiders on Friday, March 15.
Footballguys view: Nelson is part of the revamped WR corps in Oakland but he'll be a small part if he makes the 53-man roster. He's got the speed to stretch the field and will compete for snaps behind starters Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams. |

Cardinals | JJ Nelson not expected back Sat Jan 5, 12:28 PM
Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent WR JJ Nelson probably will not re-sign with the Arizona Cardinals this offseason especially after he was inactive for the last few games of the season, in the opinion of AZCardinals.com's Darren Urban.
Footballguys view: A speedy fifth-round pick for the Cardinals back in the 2015 NFL draft, Nelson has flashed here and there. He didn't do much of anything this season. Nelson appeared in 14 games but finished with a career low seven catches for 64 yards in 2018. We doubt the market for his services is that hot in the offseason. |

Cardinals | Christian Kirk to have small role? Thu Jul 19, 10:01 PM
Arizona Cardinals WR Christian Kirk is not in the mix for the No. 2 receiver job, according to Mike Jurecki of 98.7 Arizona, and Jurecki believes either WR Chad Williams, WR JJ Nelson or WR Brice Butler will win the job.
Footballguys view: It's a bit disappointing for Fantasy GMs excited about the rookie from Texas A&M. We love his dynasty stock, but Kirk may not be making much of an impact as a rookie. Larry Fitzgerald is the no.1 wide receiver for the Cardinals but the depth chart is wide open behind him. Williams is considered to be a favorite for the no.2 job, while Nelson and Butler are speedy veterans who can stretch the field. The quick rookie, Kirk was taken in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft, may have to wait for a large opportunity. |

Cardinals | JJ Nelson wants to be complete WR Tue Jun 26, 03:05 PM
Arizona Cardinals WR JJ Nelson said he is looking to be more than a deep threat and believes the new offensive scheme will help him become a more complete receiver.
Footballguys view: We'll see if Nelson can play like more than just a speed buy who stretches the defense vertically. With John Brown (Ravens) gone, there's an opportunity for someone like Nelson to emerge as a primary target in the passing game behind WR Larry Fitzgerald and RB David Johnson. Entering his fourth year and coming off back-to-back seasons with more than 500 yards receiving in each, Nelson is poised for a breakout year if he wins that no.2 spot. Brice Butler and rookie Christian Kirk will compete with Nelson for targets in 2018. |

Cardinals | Several options for No. 2 WR job Fri Jun 15, 07:03 PM
Arizona Cardinals WRs Chad Williams, JJ Nelson, Brice Butler, Greg Little and Christian Kirk could all be candidate for the No. 2 wide receiver job during training camp.
Footballguys view: The Cardinals have a talented group of WRs behind Larry Fitzgerald. Nelson can take the top off the defense, but so can Butler with his trademark speed. Williams has the size/speed combination to be a problem in the red zone. Kirk, the team's second-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, is the prototypical slot receiver. We'll watch this battle unfold in training camp with Nelson perhaps having a slight edge as the incumbent. |
