Buccaneers | Louis Murphy to start    Sat Oct 4, 08:27 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Louis Murphy will start in Week 5 in place of injured WR Mike Evans (groin).

Footballguys view: Murphy could be a sneaky WR5/flex play at wide receiver but he isn't going to be the same player that Evans was. Glennon needs help besides Vincent Jackson though, so it's worth a hail mary.

Buccaneers | Louis Murphy emerges in Week 4    Mon Sep 29, 12:49 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Louis Murphy had six catches for 99 yards receiving in the team's Week 4 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Murphy entered the lineup with WR Mike Evans (groin) dealing with a groin injury in the third quarter. In the preseason, Murphy had most of his repetitions with QB Mike Glennon, who is now starting.

Footballguys view: This often happens when a young quarterback takes over (see Jarius Wright and Teddy Bridgewater). Working with the second team offense in practice, Glennon and Murphy established good chemistry and that carried over to the field against the Steelers. We'll see if they can maintain that chemistry in the coming weeks, especially with rookie wide receiver Mike Evans banged up.

Buccaneers | Mike Evans out 2-3 weeks    Mon Sep 29, 11:50 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Mike Evans (groin) will reportedly miss two or three weeks with a strained groin.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the rookie wide receiver here. He was showing great chemistry with quarterback Mike Glennon in the game against the Steelers in Week 3. With Evans out, the team will turn to guys like Louis Murphy or Russell Shepard to pick up the slack. Vincent Jackson should be more heavily targeted going forward as well.

Buccaneers | Three to compete for No. 3 wide receiver job    Wed Jul 23, 05:52 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Robert Herron, WR Louis Murphy and WR Chris Owusu will all compete for the No. 3 WR job, according to general manager Jason Licht.

Footballguys view: Murphy has the experience edge here, but we can't wait to see rookie Robert Herron. The speedy prospect from Wyoming has multiple moves to get free at the line of scrimmage. Once into his route, Herron can make cuts at speed without losing momentum. He's a dangerous weapon with the ball in his hands.

Buccaneers | Wide receiver corps slowly taking shape    Mon Jul 7, 10:06 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Vincent Jackson and WR Mike Evans are expected to open the year as the starters, and WR Robert Herron, WR Chris Owusu and WR Louis Murphy are the frontrunners for the remaining spots, according to Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com. Smith also tabbed WR David Gettis as a player that could surprise and make the 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: The Bucs addressed the massive hole at their #2 WR spot after trading away Mike Williams, but they are still very thin at the position after that. The tight end should play a nice-sized role in the passing game, which means that Brandon Myers or rookie Austin Seferian-Jenkins could be good waiver pickups early in the season if they pan out.

Buccaneers | Louis Murphy stood out    Sat Jun 28, 04:25 PM

Buccaneers | Chris Owusu, Louis Murphy battling for No. 3 job    Fri Jun 20, 04:22 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WRs Chris Owusu and Louis Murphy have looked good in the team's offseason workouts as they battle for the No. 3 wide receiver job. The team also has high hopes for WR Robert Herron.

Footballguys view: Herron may be the player to watch here. His near 4.2 speed will come in handy before and after the catch. Herron also has multiple moves to get off the line of scrimmage. This means jamming him at the snap is difficult. We'll see a conservative offense for the most part from Tampa, but watch Herron in dynasty leagues.

Buccaneers | Louis Murphy to visit    Tue Mar 18, 01:36 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will host a visit for free-agent WR Louis Murphy (Giants) Tuesday, March 18.

Footballguys view: Murphy can stretch the field vertically with his speed, but he's never really played up to his potential as a pro. If added by the Buccaneers, Murphy would compete for the WR3 spot behind Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams.

Footballguys view: Cruz should be ok for the season opener. It sounds like he is on crutches and in a boot to aid healing, not because he has a serious injury. He's still worth a pick in the 4th, if not third round of PPR leagues.

Footballguys view: With WRs Victor Cruz (heel), Barden (knee) and Murphy (undisclosed) sidelined due to injuries, WR Jerrel Jernigan is getting plenty of reps in practice. Jernigan could be used as a slot receiver while Cruz recovers from his heel injury.

Giants | WR race loses one combatant    Sun Aug 11, 09:21 PM

New York Giants WRs Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks, Rueben Randle, Louis Murphy and Jerrel Jernigan are expected to be the team's top five wideouts. After that, there is a battle between Ramses Barden, Keith Carlos, Kevin X. Hardy and Julian Talley for the sixth receiver job, if the team elects to keep that many. WR Kris Adams (leg) was in the mix for the No. 6 job, but he fractured a leg in the preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday, Aug. 10.

Giants | Rueben Randle ready for bigger role    Wed Jul 24, 12:53 PM

New York Giants WR Rueben Randle turned heads during the offseason program, and he is ready for a bigger role in the offense behind WRs Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks. However, Randle is not locked into the third receiver job yet, as he needs to hold off WRs Ramses Barden, Jerrel Jernigan and Louis Murphy, among others.

Footballguys view: Randle is talented and has a nice mixture of size and speed. He was raw coming out of LSU but has the upside to be a quality starter and impact player for the Giants. The Giants may rely on him more than some think if Hakeem Nicks battles with injury once again this year.

Giants | Two WRs expected to compete for No. 3 WR job    Mon Jul 8, 02:11 PM

New York Giants WRs Rueben Randle and Louis Murphy are expected to compete for the No. 3 wide receiver job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Randle has the most upside here. We love his athleticism and ability to adjust to poorly thrown passes. We'll see if Randle can beat out the more experienced Murphy for the WR3 job. That position may get more targets if Hakeem Nicks misses time due to injury in 2013.

Giants | Wide receiver notes    Wed May 29, 12:53 PM

New York Giants WR Louis Murphy has stood out in OTAs so far. He was given plenty of deep routes in a recent workout. Head coach Tom Coughlin said he'll have a better impression of Rueben Randle after several more practice days.

Footballguys view: Murphy and Randle are competing for the team's WR3 spot behind Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz. Randle is the flashier player but he'll have to beat out Murphy in the preseason.

Giants | Ramses Barden re-signs    Thu May 23, 01:17 PM

The New York Giants re-signed WR Ramses Barden to an undisclosed deal Thursday, May 23.

Footballguys view: Barden found a cold free agent market so comes back to the Giants to compete for a spot on the depth chart. He's never developed his raw skill set but has good size and a wingspan to be a quality redzone target.

Giants | Rueben Randle No. 3    Thu May 23, 09:53 AM

New York Giants WR Rueben Randle is listed as the No. 3 receiver on the depth chart over WR Louis Murphy.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Randle is a phenomenal talent who can fly down the field and track the ball on deep passes. We'll see if he can develop his raw talent and become the player the Giants envisioned when they selected him in the second-round of the 2012 NFL draft.

Giants | Increased reps for other WRs    Wed May 22, 10:09 PM

New York Giants WRs Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks were missing at organized team activities Wednesday, May 22, over contract disputes, so QB Eli Manning was working with WRs Jerrel Jernigan, Louis Murphy and Rueben Randle during the session.

Footballguys view: It's good for the young WRs like Jernigan and Randle to get more experience catching passes from Manning. Murphy traveled with Manning to Duke University earlier this year to work out and catch passes.

Giants | Louis Murphy agrees to terms    Sat Mar 16, 03:25 PM

Updating a previous report, the New York Giants have agreed to terms with free-agent WR Louis Murphy (Panthers) on a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Murphy gives the team veteran depth at the WR position. Durability has been an issue with Murphy during his time in the league. If he can stay healthy we don't see a huge role for him with the Giants. Murphy could help out in the return game as well if needed.

Panthers | Louis Murphy could become No. 2 WR     Wed Dec 12, 02:28 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Louis Murphy could be the No. 2 wide receiver because of the injury to WR Brandon LaFell (toe). Murphy has been working with QB Cam Newton after practices this season and was standing on the sidelines with Newton looking at pictures of the coverages during the game in Week 14.

Footballguys view: Murphy started last week in place of an injured LaFell. He's not much of a fantasy option even with the expanded role. We'll see more targets for TE Greg Olsen with LaFell out.

Panthers | Brandon LaFell injury update    Fri Nov 2, 08:31 PM

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said the team was hoping WR Brandon LaFell (concussion) could go through some work Friday, Nov. 2, but he didn't work out as the team had hoped. LaFell is listed as doubtful for Week 9 against the Washington Redskins. 'It doesn't (look good for LaFell),' Rivera said. 'We'll see how he is tomorrow, and then we'll go from there.'

Footballguys view: Without LaFell in the lineup it will mean more targets for WR Steve Smith and TE Greg Olsen. Could be a big day for the Panthers passing game against the 32nd rank Redskins pass defense.

Panthers | Brandon LaFell leads WRs in Week 5    Sun Oct 7, 09:07 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Brandon LaFell was the best of the lot for the team's wide receivers in Week 5 against the Seattle Seahawks, and that's not saying much. He had three grabs for a team-high 44 yards. WR Steve Smith was held to 40 yards on just four receptions, and WR Louis Murphy was stopped just short of the goal line on his only catch of the day, a 5-yard reception. That was it for the wide receivers in the 16-12 loss.

Panthers | Make or break year for Armanti Edwards    Wed Aug 1, 10:41 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Armanti Edwards is trying to stick with the team for a third season, and this training camp might be a make-or-break situation. It was telling when QB Cam Newton mentioned the No. 2 receiver battle, he did not mention Edwards. 'It's an intriguing competition at that (No. 2) position. We're expecting a lot from (WR Brandon LaFell), (WR Seyi Ajirotutu), (WR Kealoha Pilares), in addition to (WR Louis Murphy).'

Panthers | Louis Murphy impressive early on    Wed Aug 1, 10:40 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Louis Murphy has been impressive in the early days of training camp since coming over from the Oakland Raiders via trade.

Footballguys view: Murphy is a good speed receiver who can make plays when healthy. It's staying healthy that has been the problem for him.

Raiders | Young WRs led to Louis Murphy trade     Thu Jul 26, 11:12 AM

The emergence of Oakland Raiders WRs Juron Criner and Rod Streater enabled the team to trade WR Louis Murphy to the Carolina Panthers. The move also opens up a roster spot and cap space.

Footballguys view: Criner could push Darrius Heyward-Bey if Heyward-Bey reverts to his shaky pre-2011 form. Streater was underused at Temple, but he shined in the spring and should be considered the favorite to win the number five wide receiver job.
