Steelers | Denzel Mims headed to Pittsburgh    Tue Oct 3, 01:58 PM

Free-agent WR Denzel Mims (Lions) was signed to the practice squad of the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

Footballguys view: Mims was a talented receiver years ago at Baylor. His play in college led him to be a second-round pick of the Jets in the 2020 NFL draft. Mims immediately seemed to be a bad fit for the Jets, but he stuck around for a few years until he was traded to the Lions in 2023. The Lions released him back in August (due to an ankle injury), and now he's getting another shot but this time in Pittsburgh. The Steelers know wide receiver talent, and it will be interesting to see if Mims can impress on the practice squad. He's a long-shot to be sure, but that natural talent might still be there if Mims can stay healthy.

Lions | Denzel Mims injures leg    Mon Aug 7, 12:45 AM

Detroit Lions WR Denzel Mims (leg) suffered a leg injury at practice Saturday, Aug. 5.

Footballguys view: The Lions just added Mims via a trade in late July. Mims fell out of favor with the Jets, but there's some skill there. We thought a fresh start would be good, but now he's banged up. We'll see how bad this injury is in the near future, but it certainly doesn't help a guy on the bubble just trying to hang onto a roster spot.

Lions | Detroit picks up Denzel Mims    Thu Jul 20, 07:21 AM

The Detroit Lions acquired WR Denzel Mims and a seventh-round pick from the New York Jets in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick Wednesday, July 19, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Mims gets another chance with a new team, and we're interested to see what he can do in this environment. He's a downfield target who plays with 'my ball' mentality, but Mims did not fit with the Jets. The former second-round pick (2020) out of Baylor will be motivated to finally prove he can make plays in this league. Mims will compete to establish a pecking order on the depth chart behind Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Marvin Jones. Guys like Kalif Raymond, Josh Reynolds, and Trinity Benson are his main competition.

Jets | New York moves off Denzel Mims    Thu Jul 20, 07:21 AM

The New York Jets traded WR Denzel Mims and a seventh-round pick to the Detroit Lions in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick Wednesday, July 19, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Jets spent a second-round pick on Mims in the world-class 2020 NFL draft (the receiver class was considered the best in history). From the jump, it seemed like Mims was just a bad fit with what the Jets wanted to do. He needed a fresh start, and the Jets were able to get something for him in exchange.

Jets | Denzel Mims on the way out    Wed Jul 19, 12:17 PM

New York Jets WR Denzel Mims is being shopped before the team ultimately decides to waive him, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Mims has never really fit what the Jets want to do on offense. A second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Mims has a nice size/speed combination and he plays with a 'my ball' mentality. We've seen little from him in the pros, and Mims only has 42 catches in three pro seasons with most of that coming in his rookie season (23 catches). If/when released, Mims will get a much-needed fresh start at some point this summer. In crazy deep dynasty formats we'll still hold out hope he can turn things around.

Jets | Brownlee could take Mims roster spot    Fri Jun 30, 01:40 PM

Zach Rosenblatt, of The Athletic, projected UDFA Jason Brownlee to make the Jets final 53 man roster over Denzel Mims.

Footballguys view: He cited Brownlee playing special teams (and Mims not), Brownlee's $246,000 signing bonus, which is huge for an undrafted player, and Brownlee being a standout in OTAs. Mims still has a chance to win his roster spot back with a good summer, but it's looking like the 2020 second round pick will be a bust with his first team. Brownlee should be on our radar in deep dynasty leagues, and might be worth a preemptive add before his ascent continues.

Jets | WR Mims Faces Uphill Battle    Thu Jun 22, 01:46 PM

New York Jets WR Denzel Mims faces an uphill climb to make the 53-man roster according to Zack Rosenblatt from The Athletic.

Footballguys view: We're surprised Mims stayed with the team this long. A second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Mims has never played up to his potential with the Jets. A fresh start would be great for him, and we'd see if he could finally tap that natural talent that he flashed in college at Baylor and at the Senior Bowl before he was drafted.

New York Jets WR Denzel Mims (concussion) is participating in the final stages of the concussion protocol, according to head coach Robert Saleh.

Footballguys view: Mims can get back out there, but he doesn't do much for the Jets' offense. He's got talent, and we'll continue to monitor him in dynasty formats, but Mims does not fit what the Jets want to do on offense. We'll see if he can rejuvenate his career when he gets a fresh start with a new team.

Jets | Denzel Mims expected to miss Week 16    Mon Dec 19, 03:23 PM

New York Jets WR Denzel Mims (concussion) is not expected to play in the Week 16 game because of a concussion.

Footballguys view: Mims will go through the league's concussion protocol, and he's likely to be out in Week 16. He's flashed talent just a bit in his pro career, but Mims doesn't seem to fit what the Jets want him to do. A second-round pick in 2020, Mims will one day get a fresh start with a new team. We'll grab him on the cheap in dynasty formats and stash him just in case Mims turns into another Zay Jones.

Jets | Denzel Mims shines in finale    Sun Aug 28, 04:19 PM

New York Jets WR Denzel Mims recorded seven catches for 102 yards and one touchdown in the preseason Week 3 win over the New York Giants on Sunday, Aug. 28.

Footballguys view: Mims wants a trade, and this could help build a market for his services. He won't garner more than a conditional late round pick, which shows where his dynasty value is right now, but Mims obviously has the talent to make an impact if he ever gets an opportunity, so a trade, no matter how small the compensation, could get him back on our radar.

Panthers | Carolina calling about Denzel Mims    Fri Aug 26, 12:59 PM

The Carolina Panthers inquired about a potential trade for New York Jets WR Denzel Mims, according to a source Friday, Aug. 26, after Mims recently requested a trade from the Jets.

Footballguys view: Mims would probably come in as the fifth receiver in Carolina behind D.J. Moore, Robbie Anderson, Rashard Higgins, and Terrace Marshall, but at least he would be in an organization that seemed to want his services. He's probably not worth carrying in typical dynasty leagues right now.

Jets | Mims impressed in offseason    Sun Jul 10, 04:11 PM

Rich Cimini, of ESPN, reports that WR Denzel Mims impressed in the offseason after "struggling to gain footing with the current coaching staff".

Footballguys view: Cimini also says Mims is no better than fourth on the Jets depth chart at wide receiver (behind Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, Garrett Wilson) and he was brought up under heading of "veteran camp cut candidate" so let's not lose the forest here. Mims is a physical talent and was a second round pick just two years ago, but he hasn't fit in with either coaching staff he has played with. Keep him on your deep dynasty radar.

Jets | Denzel Mims praised by Robert Saleh    Wed Jun 1, 11:21 AM

New York Jets WR Denzel Mims received praise from head coach Robert Saleh on Wednesday, June 1. 'He's in fantastic shape,' Saleh noted. 'He's a lot further along today than he was a year ago.'

Footballguys view: Mims hasn't done much with the Jets over the last two years, but this offseason there have been plenty of praise about his ability. A second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, Mims had three catches in three starts last year for the Jets - and he finished his sophomore season with only eight catches for 133 yards. Mims doesn't play special teams which hinders his ability of making the 53-man roster this year as the no.5 (at best) wide receiver on the depth chart.

Jets | Denzel Mims showing extra dedication    Mon Apr 18, 12:39 PM

New York Jets WR Denzel Mims is showing some added dedication ahead of his third season. Not only is he adding mass to his frame, he also showed up extra early to begin preparation for 2022, his personal trainer, Chad Marr, revealed. 'He came almost immediately,' Marr said. 'He was here so early he was training with my major league ball players. That's how early he was. Usually, I start seeing the guys after the Super Bowl. Denzel was here long before that.'

Footballguys view: Mims has talent, but going to the Jets was always a bad fit. It sounds like he's dedicated to proving the doubters wrong, and we'll see if that comes up on the field when he's playing. Mims seems like one of those players who would be better off with a different team.
