NFL | Robert Meachem working out    Fri Mar 31, 12:04 PM

Free-agent WR Robert Meachem (Saints) worked out at Tennessee's pro day on Friday, March 31.

Footballguys view: Entering his age-33 season, Meachem is looking for a job. He just got out of jail for failing to pay child support, and we doubt Meachem gets much if any interest from pro teams who can move on with younger/better prospects.

Saints | Robert Meachem to try out for Saints    Fri Apr 22, 02:33 AM

Free-agent WR Robert Meachem (Saints) will work out for the New Orleans Saints Friday, April 22, according to a source.

Footballguys view: If signed, this would be his third stint with the team. At 31-years old, Meachem was out of football last season. In 2014, he appeared in 11 games and caught seven passes for 114 yards.

Lions | Detroit works out Robert Meachem    Mon Jun 8, 09:09 PM

The Detroit Lions will work out free-agent WR Robert Meachem (Saints) Tuesday, June 12.

Footballguys view: The Lions are looking for some wide receiver depth, and Meachem would give them just that. He's got experience working under OC Joe Lombardi from their days together with the Saints. We'll see if the Lions want to pick him up for a cheap price.

Saints | Two Saints WRs could see more time    Mon Nov 17, 02:34 PM

New Orleans Saints WRs Robert Meachem and Joe Morgan will likely be asked to play more with WR Brandin Cooks (thumb) out for an extended period.

Saints | Robert Meachem re-signs with Saints    Wed Sep 3, 03:58 PM

The New Orleans Saints re-signed WR Robert Meachem to an undisclosed deal four days after he was released Wednesday, Sept. 3. In a corresponding move, LB Khairi Fortt (undisclosed) was placed on the short-term Reserve/Injured list. Meachem caught only 16 passes in the regular season last year and finished with 324 yards.

Footballguys view: Awesome. He still has next to zero fantasy value.

Saints | Robert Meachem released    Sat Aug 30, 03:58 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Robert Meachem has been released.

Footballguys view: Meachem returned to New Orleans with the hopes of resuming his old role as a deep threat for Drew Brees. The team decided he wasn't good enough to make the squad this time around. We can't imagine any team getting hot and bothered now that Meachem is on the open market.

Saints | Two expected back soon    Mon Jul 28, 06:52 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Robert Meachem (back) and OG Ben Grubbs (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Monday, July 28, but head coach Sean Payton said both should return to the field in the next few days.

Footballguys view: Meachem's role with the team will be what it was last time around. He'll be a deep threat to stretch the field, and his fantasy value should be rather low. The highest Meachem ever ranked during his previous time with the Saints was WR22 in the 2009 season when he posted 45 catches for 722 yards and nine touchdowns. He shouldn't get half that (especially the touchdowns) in 2014.

Saints | Robert Meachem not practicing    Sun Jul 27, 09:36 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Robert Meachem (undisclosed) is not participating in practice Sunday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Meachem is a seasoned veteran who can get down the field in a hurry. He's battled plenty of injuries during his pro career, and he may see a few scheduled "days off" during his time in camp. This is not uncommon for certain veterans around the league.

Saints | Re-sign Robert Meachem     Fri Apr 18, 01:08 PM

The New Orleans Saints re-signed WR Robert Meachem to a one-year deal Friday, April 18. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Saints | Interested in Robert Meachem returning    Sat Feb 22, 01:48 PM

The New Orleans Saints are interested in re-signing impending free-agent WR Robert Meachem this offseason. His return to the team likely will depend on the salary the Saints will offer.

Footballguys view: The Saints won't want to overpay the occasionally great but often inconsistent Meachem so this dance might go on for a bit and Meachem may just use their asking price as a basis to build a deal on elsewhere.

Cowboys | Could have interest in Robert Meachem    Sat Feb 8, 10:29 AM

The Dallas Cowboys could have interest in WR Robert Meachem (Saints) if he should get to free agency, in the opinion of Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas.

Footballguys view: Any team looking for a big wide receiver who can get open downfield and drop passes should be interested in Meachem. Nobody makes drops look as pretty as he does.

Saints | Robert Meachem could return    Tue Feb 4, 08:50 PM

The New Orleans Saints could re-sign impending free-agent WR Robert Meachem this offseason and give him a similar role to what he had this season.

Footballguys view: Meachem struggles when he's relied on more than what the Saints give him. He's a reserve player for the Saints who can stretch the field and make a few big plays downfield. New Orleans is a great fit for him, and Meachem should desire to stay with the Saints.

Saints | Marques Colston questionable    Fri Nov 8, 04:19 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston (knee) was limited during practice Friday, Nov. 8, and is listed as questionable for Week 10.

Footballguys view: Colston isn't worth playing even if he is active. He has been so underwhelming this year that he wasn't worth playing before his ailments cost him playing time.

Saints | WRs step up with Marques Colston out    Sun Nov 3, 06:34 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Robert Meachem had four grabs for 93 yards in Week 9 against the New York Jets, and WR Lance Moore chipped in with six catches for 70 yards.

Footballguys view: Meachem stepped up in place of Marques Colston, and not Kenny Stills or Lance Moore. He's still not worthy a pickup.

Saints | Plenty of depth if Marques Colston can't go    Sat Nov 2, 12:02 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston (knee) is uncertain to play in the Week 9 game against the New York Jets. If he cannot go, the team still has good depth at the receiver position with WR Lance Moore healthy, and WR Kenny Stills emerging as a solid threat. WRs Robert Meachem and Nick Toon also provide good depth.

Footballguys view: Stills is an emerging talent with the speed to get on top of the defense in a hurry. Fantasy owners can count on him as a flex play with upside regardless of Colston's playing status. The one player we'd like to see more of is Nick Toon. He's got the size and wingspan to be at least a red zone threat.

The New Orleans Saints have declared WR Andy Tanner, DL Glenn Foster, SS Isa Abdul-Quddus, RB Khiry Robinson, LB Martez Wilson, WR Robert Meachem, OT Terron Armstead inactive for Week 1.

Footballguys view: It's clear that fifth-round rookie Kenny Stills will have the chance to take Meachem's old job as the deep threat and run with it. Meachem was signed as insurance. Robinson could be a name to remember if Mark Ingram has injury issues again this year.

Saints | Robert Meachem happy to be back    Thu Sep 5, 12:29 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Robert Meachem is happy to be back with the team, where is caught 45 passes for 722 yards and nine touchdowns in 2009. 'Just watching him run around, he looks as good as ever,' QB Drew Brees said. 'I look forward to getting him incorporated back in.'

Footballguys view: Meachem knows the system and the Saints know how to use him best. However, the Meachem they're getting back is not quite the same player he was in 2009. Meachem will compete with rookie Kenny Stills (Oklahoma) to be the WR3 behind Marques Colston and Lance Moore.

Saints | Robert Meachem terms    Thu Sep 5, 11:49 AM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints WR Robert Meachem's one-year deal is worth $715,000.

Footballguys view: Welcome to the Saint's fantasy morass, Mr. Meachem. As mentioned before, while Meachem has been a vertical threat in the past, he's fallen off. While Drew Brees is a much better quarterback than the current incarnation of Philip Rivers, Meachem can't be expected to do much. He should be on the waiver wire, not your bench. We still like rookie Kenny Stills as a sleeper prospect in deeper re-draft leagues.

Saints | Contract details for Robert Meachem    Tue Sep 3, 09:02 PM

Updating a previous report, the New Orleans Saints agreed to a one-year contract Tuesday, Sept. 3, with WR Robert Meachem (Chargers). Financial terms of the deal were still undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Meachem gets to resume his role as a deep threat for the Saints. However, the speed he once had just isn't the same anymore and it's one of the reasons why the Chargers were willing to eat $5MM just to have Meachem leave. We'll see if he can jump start his career catching passes from Drew Brees again. Meachem should not be on your fantasy team in standard re-draft leagues.

Saints | Robert Meachem nearing deal    Tue Sep 3, 02:49 PM

The New Orleans Saints are nearing a deal with WR Robert Meachem (Chargers). Terms of the potential deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Meachem could go back to the Saints and give them veteran depth at the WR position. He would go back to his old role of stretching the field as a third or fourth option in the WR corps behind Marques Colston and Lance Moore.

Chargers | Robert Meachem cut    Sat Aug 31, 04:17 PM

The San Diego Chargers cut WR Robert Meachem. Meachem costs the team $6.875MM in dead money on the salary cap.

Footballguys view: The team is paying $5MM this season for Meachem to not play for them. Meachem was supposed to be a gem of their free agent class last season but failed to stay healthy and impress. The Chargers are desperate for help at the WR position but still felt the need to bounce Meachem from the final roster.

Chargers | Robert Meachem seeing limited reps    Sun Aug 25, 10:35 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Robert Meachem is getting limited reps right now, and head coach Mike McCoy explained Sunday, Aug. 25, that it is by design. 'We're going what (we) think is right for the football team. We have a rotation and a certain way we are playing guys,' McCoy said. 'The coaching staff sits down (and) decides how we're going to play guys. We think we are doing it for a reason and what we think is best. This is the plan we've talked about all week long. (Meachem) worked extremely hard and last night he made the most of his opportunities.'

Footballguys view: Meachem is only on the team because his five million dollar base salary is guaranteed this year. He won't see the field much in just about any scenario.

San Diego Chargers WR Malcom Floyd (knee) was carted off the field after suffering an apparent right knee injury during practice Monday, Aug. 12. Floyd was receiving treatment on his knee for a few minutes before being carted off.

Chargers | Vincent Brown likely to start    Wed Aug 7, 12:00 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Brown (hamstring) is likely to start opposite WR Malcom Floyd following the season-ending injury to WR Danario Alexander (knee). WRs Keenan Allen, Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal are the other receivers in the mix. Brown is not expected to play in the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 8, however, after just returning to practice recently after a strained hamstring sidelined him from practice.

Footballguys view: We love Brown as a value pick later in your draft. He's a sharp route runner with strong hands and concentration. He'll be a favorite target of QB Philip Rivers because he gets open and catches everything thrown his way. His current ADP is WR44 and he's going off the board at 11.05 in 12 team PPR leagues.

Chargers | Money likely reason for Robert Meachem staying    Fri Jul 26, 02:46 PM

The San Diego Chargers owe WR Robert Meachem plenty of guaranteed money, so that's likely the only reason he makes the 53-man roster. According to people close to the club, they are convinced he will not be a factor in 2013.

Footballguys view: Meachem will go down as the one of the last bad signings that AJ Smith saddled the team with in 2012, along with OT Jared Gaither. The Chargers were afraid of the Bills jumping in to the battle for Meachem's services, and paid dearly for that fear.

Chargers | Unlikely to trade Robert Meachem    Wed Jul 3, 03:26 PM

The San Diego Chargers are unlikely to trade WR Robert Meachem before the season starts, according to Bill Williamson. Williamson points out Meachem is owed $5 million in guaranteed money and a team would have to be desperate to trade for him.

Footballguys view: This is one of the bad AJ Smith contracts that the Chargers are stuck with. They overpaid for Meachem after losing Vincent Jackson, in part because Buffalo seemed to be in the market for Meachem's services and they didn't want to lose him. He could reprise his Saints role as a deep threat if he comes on this summer, but Meachem is never going to be a strong starting wide receiver. He has no fantasy value.

Chargers | Keenan Allen worked with first team    Tue Jun 25, 11:57 AM

San Diego Chargers WR Keenan Allen worked with the first-team offense on the final day of the team's minicamp WRs Danario Alexander and Eddie Royal dinged up with undisclosed injuries. Allen said he's comfortable with the playbook and the offense's terminology. 'He's done a nice job buying into what we're doing,' head coach Mike McCoy said. 'It's a change for him. We're moving guys around, and the skill-position guys really need to know every position because you never know when Philip is going to check at the line of scrimmage. You have an idea where you're playing, but when it comes to a formation, Philip can audible something whenever he wants. ... You've got to know every position.'

Footballguys view: Allen is an exciting prospect to watch in dynasty leagues. He's a linear athlete who can make difficult catches seem routine. This season Allen should get time to learn as the team's WR4/5 behind guys like Danario Alexander, Vincent Brown, Eddie Royal, and Malcom Floyd. His dynasty upside is strong and he could develop into a consistent WR2 in the near future.

Chargers | Robert Meachem has some hope to improve    Thu Jun 13, 06:31 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Robert Meachem is still buried on the depth chart, but this new offense gives him a shot to produce more than he did last year.

Footballguys view: Meachem was a disappointment (along with Eddie Royal) as a free agent addition last year. He's always been inconsistent during his pro career and that didn't change in 2012. The new system may be more friendly but we're not counting on him to make much of a fantasy impact behind Danario Alexander, Vincent Brown, Eddie Royal, and Malcom Floyd.

Chargers | Three wideouts working way up    Sun Jun 9, 08:03 PM

San Diego Chargers WRs Keenan Allen, Richard Goodman and Robert Meachem did not rotate as starters during organized team activities (OTAs), but they are very much in the picture and pushing for roster spots behind WRs Danario Alexander, Vincent Brown, Malcom Floyd and Eddie Royal.

Footballguys view: Allen could push for the starting slot WR job as we get closer to training camp. Currently the team is using Eddie Royal in that role. Allen is much more talented and a dangerous weapon after the catch when healthy.

Chargers | Robert Meachem could be trade bait    Fri May 24, 12:57 AM

If San Diego Chargers WR Robert Meachem has a strong preseason, the club could see if there's an active trade market for him. His $6.875 million cap number, however, may make that a difficult task.

Footballguys view: Good luck with that. Meachem has proven to be more of a tease than a productive player during his pro career. His first season in San Diego was no different. Meachem has a great size/speed combination but has never truly played up to his potential.

Chargers | Robert Meachem costly    Sun Feb 10, 09:11 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Robert Meachem had just 14 receptions, and he was targeted only 32 times in 2012, but he is guaranteed $5 million in 2013.

Footballguys view: Meachem was inconsistent with the Saints and that trend continued with the Chargers last year. He was outplayed by Danario Alexander and wasn't much of a factor for the team in 2012. We're not expecting a huge jump in production this year.
