Eagles | Donovan McNabb to retire with team    Tue May 14, 08:10 AM

Free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings) said on his radio show that he will retire as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles in September.

Footballguys view: McNabb played 11 seasons with the Eagles and led the team to 5 NFC Championship Games and 1 Super Bowl. The Eagles will host the Chiefs (and former coach Andy Reid) on Thursday September 19th and that's when the ceremony for McNabb will be. Now the debate can start about whether or not he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

NFL | Donovan McNabb confident he'll get another shot    Tue Sep 11, 06:11 PM

Free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings) remains confident that another NFL team will give him a shot this year.

Footballguys view: We're not sure the phone will ring for McNabb as his best days are far behind him. If a team has a rash of injuries at the QB position then perhaps the veteran QB would get a chance.

Cardinals | Could add someone to QB competition     Wed Aug 15, 10:35 AM

There remains a possibility for the Arizona Cardinals to bring in another passer to push QBs Kevin Kolb and John Skelton. According to league sources, Kolb is expected to be given every opportunity to win the job the next two weeks, but other options could arise as well.

Footballguys view: Adding a veteran camp cut is an option as is a street free agent like Donovan McNabb. Kolb and Skelton haven't really distanced themselves from each other in the preseason.

Ravens | Donovan McNabb could be option    Mon Jul 2, 02:11 PM

The Baltimore Ravens could consider pursuing free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings) later this offseason if they are uneasy about their backup quarterback situation.

Footballguys view: The Ravens currently have Tyrod Taylor and Curtis Painter battling for the primary backup job behind Joe Flacco. McNabb is looking for a Super Bowl ring and wants to go to a new team with a strong defense and championship aspirations.

NFL | Donovan McNabb not getting much interest    Sun Jul 1, 03:50 PM

Free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings) has not receive much interest this offseason even though he said there is a 80 or 90 percent chance that he would play this season.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. McNabb would like to catch on somewhere as a backup on a Super Bowl contender but those jobs aren't available. Injuries in training camp could improve the interest level in McNabb.

Broncos | No interest in QB McNabb?    Fri Jun 29, 04:08 PM

Cecil Lammey, NFL Insider for 102.3 ESPN Denver and senior writer at Footballguys.com, reports via Twitter that he's heard the Denver Broncos have no interest in free agent QB Donovan McNabb. Currently the Broncos have Caleb Hanie, Adam Weber, and rookie Brock Osweiler behind starter Peyton Manning.

Footballguys view: Upon signing Manning in free agency, Broncos VP John Elway stated there was 'no plan B' behind the superstar QB. Hanie is considered by some as the primary backup, but he's struggled during minicamp and OTAs. However, Osweiler has looked like an improved QB this offseason. There's a chance the rookie could win the primary backup job behind Manning in training camp.

NFL | Donovan McNabb looking at three teams    Fri Jun 29, 01:27 PM

Free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings) said there is an 80 to 90 percent chance of him playing this season and that he has been looking at three teams he would like to join. McNabb said he looking to sign with a Super Bowl contender that has a good running game, weapons at wide receiver and defense that has been playing well.

Footballguys view: McNabb hasn't generated much interset on the open market this offseason. He'll likely have to wait for injuries to hit the QB position in training camp before getting a shot with a new team. McNabb isn't going to compete for a starting job, but some team could sign him as veteran insurance as a backup.

NFL | Andy Reid endorses Donovan McNabb    Tue May 15, 02:19 PM

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid, free-agent QB Donovan McNabb's (Vikings) former head coach, said any team would be wise to take a chance on the quarterback. 'I still think he can play. I think the world of him, and we had some great years together here. I'm always wishing him the best and a fan of his. I got a chance to see him at Brian Dawkins' retirement (event),' Reid said. 'He looks good. He looks physically good. He looks like he could go out and play tomorrow. I would highly recommend (him).'

Footballguys view: McNabb has said that he'd be willing to play for any team, but there are few interested in his services right now. The Eagles QB corps is full with Trent Edwards and Mike Kafka competing to be the primary backup behind Michael Vick. Rookie Nick Foles is likely to be their third-string developmental QB.

Free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings) said he does not have a list of teams he would be interested in signing with. Rather, he will sign with any team interested at this point. 'I have a list,' McNabb said. 'A full list, of 32.'

NFL | Donovan McNabb waiting for an opportunity     Sat May 5, 09:38 AM

Free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings) said that he has been working out, getting into better shape and focusing on his fundamentals as a passer, and he's ready just as soon as some team wants to pick up the phone and call. 'I've been training hard and preparing myself out in San Diego working with George Whitfield, the obviously well-known quarterback guru, supposedly, for over the past month,' McNabb said. 'Just kind of refining the skills, working on the mechanics and getting back to a high level, an elite level. I'm just waiting for the opportunity to display that.'

Footballguys view: McNabb is not the same player he used to be, and is unlikely to get any interest as a starting QB anymore. Even as a backup teams might now want McNabb around. We'll see if injuries to the QB position in training camp open up an opportunity for McNabb.

Free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings) said Saturday, April 28, that he has not yet decided whether he'll retire from the National Football League or not. He is currently weighing his options.

Footballguys view: McNabb needs to go ahead and retire here. He's already shown that he's not the same player he used to be. Unless he likes holding a clipboard he should look to the next chapter of his life.

NFL | Donovan McNabb considers himself a Hall of Famer     Thu Apr 19, 09:00 AM

Free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings) said he'd 'absolutely' vote for himself to be in the Hall of Fame despite not winning a Super Bowl. 'What happens a lot of times is we look at what the list says, so we talk about the five NFC Championship Games, the six Pro Bowls and then we come to the end, 'Well, he never won the big game,'' McNabb said. 'Well, Peyton never won the big game until he won the Super Bowl. Dan Marino never won the big game. Does that mean his career is a failure? No, not at all.'

Footballguys view: Sorry, just spit coffee on the monitor here. What in the world is McNabb thinking?

Redskins | Donovan McNabb thinks Robert Griffin will struggle     Thu Mar 29, 12:02 PM

Free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings) said he does not believe Baylor QB Robert Griffin III will be successful if he lands with the Washington Redskins. 'No. I say that because a lot of the time ego gets too involved when it comes to being in Washington,' McNabb said. 'Here's a guy that's coming out who is very talented -mobile, strong arm. We've already heard he's intelligent, a football mind. Are you going to cater the offense around his talent and what he's able to do or are you going to bring the Houston offense with Matt Schaub over to him and have him kind of be embedded in that?' McNabb added, 'When you talk about RG3, you talk about his ability, you talk about how smart he is, his arm strength - what type of offense do you run with it? Is the the spread offense that you have him continue to flourish in. Or, are you just going to have him in a fox hole with a makeshift offensive line? You keep bringing in receivers. You have a solid tight end in Fred Davis that you need to feature. What are we going to see? I don't think it's a great fit.'

Footballguys view: McNabb sounds like a bitter ex-employee here.

Bears | Donovan McNabb expected call from team    Fri Jan 20, 02:39 PM

Free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings) said he expected a call from the Chicago Bears after QB Jay Cutler (thumb) suffered his thumb injury during the season.

Footballguys view: McNabb may not be on a roster next year unless injuries hit a team in training camp. He failed to produce as a starter in Washington or Minnesota over the last two years and may be done playing football.

Bears | Unlikely to add QB    Mon Dec 5, 02:27 PM

Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith disputed reports that the team might be looking to lure QB Brett Favre out of retirement. 'That's our group,' Smith said of the three quarterbacks on the Bears' roster. 'We're going to make improvements with our group. We're not looking on the outside. We won't have a quarterback tryout or anything like that.' The team still hopes QB Jay Cutler (thumb) can return at the end of the season. Chicago is also rumored to be looking at free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings).

Bears | Devin Hester opposed to signing Donovan McNabb     Mon Dec 5, 10:48 AM

Chicago Bears WR Devin Hester said he is not in favor of the team signing free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings). Hester believes McNabb could not get up to speed fast enough with the Bears' offense to make a difference. And Hester even suggested that McNabb's arrival could be counterproductive, as any time spent working with McNabb would take away from time the rest of the offense needs to work with QB Caleb Hanie. 'It's going to be tough right now to pick up a quarterback that hasn't played in the Mike Martz offense,' Hester said. 'This is a difficult offense to run, so as far as a quarterback who hasn't played in the offense, right now it's going to be a waste of time.'

Footballguys view: The Bears and Cowboys may put in waiver claims for Kyle Orton when he was released, so one could imagine they'd do the same thing with McNabb. Dallas is ahead of Chicago in the waiver priority.

Vikings | Donovan McNabb to be cut    Thu Dec 1, 01:56 PM

The Minnesota Vikings are expected to release QB Donovan McNabb Thursday, Dec. 1.

Footballguys view: McNabb may be claimed by either the Dallas Cowboys or the Chicago Bears. We imagine the Chicago native would prefer to play for the Bears.   Vikings | Donovan McNabb believes he should start    Sat Oct 29, 11:25 AM

Minnesota Vikings QB Donovan McNabb believes he should still be the team's starting quarterback. McNabb feels he was not playing poorly. 'Statistically I wasn't playing bad. I wasn't turning the ball over offensively,' McNabb said. 'We were averaging 20-plus points or so. But there's a lot of things that go into that. And when you draft a young guy first round and you're 1-5, obviously, everyone wants to see the younger guy, the so-called spark.' McNabb added that he can and still wants to start in the NFL.

Footballguys view: McNabb's not the same player he used to be and should feel lucky to still be in the league.

Vikings | Donovan McNabb defends work ethic     Mon Oct 24, 10:02 AM

The Minnesota Vikings benched QB Donovan McNabb at least in part because he wasn't putting in the time to be a great player and leader, according to people in the organization. McNabb refuted the report, however, by saying he did put in the necessary time and did what coaches asked him to do, and he is more disappointed that the story has become about him than about being demoted for what coaches believed was best for the team.

Vikings | Donovan McNabb unhappy with demotion     Thu Oct 20, 08:17 AM

Minnesota Vikings QB Donovan McNabb said the decision to start QB Christian Ponder was a surprise to him, despite the 1-5 start. 'As any other competitor, you obviously want to compete with your team and prepare and look forward to the opportunity of getting back on the field and changing things,' McNabb said. 'But unfortunately it's not so.' McNabb said he will prepare as if he will have another opportunity to see action. 'At this particular point, it's for me to continue to prepare and make sure that we continue to support Christian and make sure that he's ready. But most important for me, is to prepare because I'm just one play from going back in. Just make sure I'm ready when called upon and try to lead us to victory.'

Footballguys view: McNabb's unhappy, but at least he's going to help mentor rookie Christian Ponder as the team moves in a different direction.

Updating a previous item, Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder will be the team's starting quarterback for the rest of the season. QB Donovan McNabb will mentor the rookie and serve as the backup.

Footballguys view: The team has made the switch and want to give Ponder the proper time to develop. Unless he's injured he'll stay in the starting lineup - even if he struggles. He's a rookie QB and should go through some growing pains this season.

Vikings | Donovan McNabb expected to stay on roster    Wed Oct 19, 12:47 PM

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said he expects QB Donovan McNabb to remain on the roster for the rest of the season. McNabb indicated that he would like to help QB Christian Ponder during the season.

Footballguys view: McNabb's days as a starting QB might have come to a close with the announcement that rookie Christian Ponder would start. He's failed to impress as a starter in Washington and Minnesota and may be best served just being a veteran backup.

Vikings | Christian Ponder unlikely to lose job    Tue Oct 18, 02:49 PM

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier indicated that he doesn't want to flip flop his starting quarterbacks on a week-to-week basis, which means that QB Christian Ponder will likely be the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season. QB Donovan McNabb's career may be winding to an end.

Footballguys view: Ponder needs time to develop, and will likely go through growing pains on the field. He will look like a rookie and the Vikings may struggle because of it. However, Ponder should have a long leash as the team tries to develop his pro game. Only injury could take Ponder out of the lineup now that he's been named the starter.

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier indicated Tuesday, Oct. 18, that the team will make a change at quarterback and QB Christian Ponder will step in for QB Donovan McNabb as the starter.

Footballguys view: It was time (perhaps past time) to make a move here. McNabb is not the answer and the team spent a first-round pick on Ponder for a reason. He was considered the most 'pro ready' QB in this draft class because of the system he ran at Florida State. This move seems permanent as Ponder should have a chance to develop at his own pace.

'I felt like we did a lot of great things. But I guess we'll sit down to talk, but I still expect to be in there next week.'

Footballguys view: McNabb did throw the ball at almost an 80% accuracy clip and honestly looked better than he did in the landslide win over the Cardinals, but that might not matter to a franchise starting to think about next year.

Vikings | Christian Ponder solid in relief    Mon Oct 17, 12:41 AM

Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder completed 9 of 17 passes for 99 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in the fourth quarter of the Week 6 loss against the Chicago Bears. He also ran once for eight yards. QB Donovan McNabb was an efficient 19 of 24 before being lifted in the blowout loss, but the struggles of the team certainly weren't all his fault. Still, it will be interesting to see if head coach Leslie Frazier hands over the offense to the rookie.

Footballguys view: Ponder looked ok, although it was against a defense that had the game in hand. He did seem to have good timing with Percy Harvin, and he will definitely a better thrower on the move than McNabb is at this point in his career.

Vikings | Want Donovan McNabb to be more aggressive     Fri Oct 14, 09:44 AM

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier wants QB Donovan McNabb to be more aggressive in the passing game. Although McNabb only has two interceptions on the season, Frazier feels McNabb has played too cautious. McNabb has averaged just 170 passing yards per game. 'He's done a great job of not turning the ball over, which is a big deal because of the way we play,' Frazier said. 'It's one of the reasons we've been in these games the way we have. But you can't play this game cautious. He knows that. He's had a ton of success in this league. Sometimes, you just got to let it go. And he will, and he has.'

'This whole mechanics thing is getting out of hand,' McNabb said. 'Everybody works on mechanics, no matter what position you play. I'm all about winning. I'm not about numbers.'

Footballguys view: If McNabb is all about winning, you wouldn't know it from looking at the Vikings record with him as the starter.

Vikings | Donovan McNabb must improve accuracy     Wed Oct 12, 10:20 AM

In Week 5, Minnesota Vikings QB Donovan McNabb was 10-for-21 for 169 yards, including one wobbly pass to WR Devin Aromashodu that accounted for 60 of those yards. Despite ample time in the pocket, several of McNabb's passes were inexplicably short or behind receivers. McNabb is not turning over the ball, but he frequently misses open targets.

Footballguys view: Hasn't that been the problem with McNabb ever since he's been in the NFL? We're not expecting to see a big difference in his game the rest of the year.
