Texans | Sign three    Thu Jan 24, 04:42 PM

The Houston Texans re-signed QB Case Keenum and WR Jeff Maehl and signed QB Stephen McGee (Cowboys) Thursday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: Keenan and McGee will compete for the team's third QB spot behind Matt Schaub and T.J. Yates. We like Keenan because of his short accuracy but McGee is a better athlete. Neither are overly exciting prospects in deep dynasty leagues.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers worked out free-agents WR Thomas Mayo (NCAA), QB Stephen McGee (Cowboys), WR Jeremy Ross (Colts) and WR Roberto Wallace (Dolphins) Wednesday, Sept. 5.

Footballguys view: Ross is the most talented from this group. He's fast after the catch and has RB like moves in the open field. McGee failed to develop as a backup in Dallas for years and may find it difficult to find a new job.

Cowboys | Stephen McGee struggling during camp    Mon Aug 13, 03:34 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Stephen McGee has struggled during practice at training camp. He is competing with QB Rudy Carpenter for the No. 3 quarterback job if the team decides to keep three quarterbacks on their final roster.

Footballguys view: The team has been patient with McGee but he hasn't developed over the last few years. He's certainly on the roster bubble, and the team may decide to keep only two QBs on the roster - Tony Romo and Kyle Orton.

Cowboys | Not impressed with Stephen McGee     Mon Jun 18, 10:48 AM

The Dallas Cowboys have not been impressed with the development of QB Stephen McGee. McGee is expected to compete with QB Rudy Carpenter for a roster spot in training camp.

The Dallas Cowboys will have to decide whether they want to have QB Stephen McGee as their primary backup quarterback or sign a veteran quarterback in free agency. Head coach Jason Garrett said this will be an important decision for the team this offseason.

Footballguys view: McGee has been with them long enough to know the offense, but the team may look for a veteran to compete with him in training camp.

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said that the team would feel comfortable with QB Stephen McGee as the No. 2 quarterback in 2012.

Footballguys view: McGee was the second string QB this year after Kitna went down with injury. He's got a good blend of athleticism and arm strength, but hasn't really wowed us anytime he's on the field -- even in preseason.

Cowboys | Stephen McGee not expected to compete for No. 2 QB    Mon Jul 4, 01:55 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Stephen McGee likely will not be given the opportunity to compete for the No.2 quarterback during training camp because he was not able to work out in front of coaches and learn how he could improve his play.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys are going to have Jon Kitna as the primary backup behind Tony Romo once again this year. We like McGee's ability to keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. McGee has developmental upside, but will likely have to wait until next year to compete for the number two job.

Cowboys | Stephen McGee could have reps limited    Wed Jun 1, 09:35 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Stephen McGee may have his repetitions limited if there is a shortened training camp or less preseason games because of the lockout.

Footballguys view: McGee has good upside as a backup quarterback behind Tony Romo. He is athletic enough to keep the play alive with his feet, yet keeps his eyes downfield and can attack a defense with his arm. This season he should once again be third-string behind veteran Jon Kitna. However, the team thinks of him as the future at the backup spot.

Footballguys view: McGee has flashed some playmaking ability during the preseason but is not going to beat out Jon Kitna for the primary backup job this season. We like his upside as a developmental quarterback because of his toughness, football intelligence, and athleticism.

Rainer Sabin, from the Dallas Morning News, reports that in a recent interview Cowboys backup QB Stephen McGee called the lockout a 'big setback' for his progress this year. McGee is set to be the third-string QB once again behind Tony Romo and Jon Kitna.

Footballguys view: McGee has flashed decent playmaking ability, but is not ready to challenge Kitna for the primary backup position behind Romo. He should be relegated to third-string duty once again this year. We'd like to see him get more of an opportunity to prove himself, and are intrigued by his skill set.

Cowboys | Stephen McGee sounds like Week 17 starter    Thu Dec 30, 11:47 PM

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett seemed to strongly indicate QB Stephen McGee will start in Week 17 against the Philadelphia Eagles, reports Tom Orsborn, of the San Antonio Express-News. '(McGee's) a capable guy, he can move around in the pocket, he can throw the football, there is nothing you can say like, 'Hey we can't do this with Stephen,'' Garrett said Thursday, Dec. 30. 'He's done a nice job in practice and hopefully he can carry that to the ball game.'

Footballguys view: McGee looked like he was not afraid of making mistakes or challenging the defense vs. the Cardinals, so he might be sneaky good start in week 17 vs. the Eagles, who have nothing to gain.

Cowboys | Stephen McGee preparing to start    Tue Dec 28, 12:23 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Stephen McGee might get his first NFL start in Week 17 against the Philadelphia Eagles, reports David Moore, of The Dallas Morning News. QB Jon Kitna (oblique) missed the second half of the Week 16 game against the Arizona Cardinals Saturday, Dec. 25, and is uncertain for the regular season finale.

Footballguys view: Stephen McGee is an athletic quarterback who ran a couple of different systems during his time at Texas A&M. He ran a pro set, but also ran the option in college after the Aggies made a coaching change. McGee has good upside, and could develop into a quality starter someday because of his arm strength and athleticism.

Cowboys | Stephen McGee not expected to play in last two weeks    Wed Dec 22, 01:52 PM

The Dallas Cowboys do not plan on playing QB Stephen McGee at any point in the last two games of the season, reports Jan Hubbard, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Footballguys view: McGee has good future potential because of his scrambling ability and his accuracy when throwing on the run. However, the Cowboys have Jon Kitna under contract next year so there's no real need to see what McGee can do in live action this year.

Cowboys | Not considering using Stephen McGee    Fri Nov 12, 12:33 PM

Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said the team is not considering using QB Stephen McGee because they want to win and believe QB Jon Kitna gives them the best chance to do so, reports Clarence E. Hill Jr., of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Footballguys view: McGee would be a desperation at this point, but the Cowboys are a desperate team. The young QB could still find the field if Kitna gets hurt as the Cowboys haven't made a move to fortify the depth chart with a veteran backup to Kitna.

Cowboys | Stephen McGee won't receive a chance    Thu Oct 28, 11:24 PM

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said it is not in the best interest of the team to try and groom QB Stephen McGee instead of starting QB Jon Kitna with QB Tony Romo (shoulder) out, according to ESPNDallas.com's Tim MacMahon. 'I think we should use everything we've got on every play to win every down,' Jones said. 'It's important to this team every time we get a chance to win within the context of the game or in the context of the possession. We would not, in any way, compromise a chance to win the game by playing a player to evaluate or to give him experience.'

The Dallas Cowboys may consider entering the season with two quarterbacks on their roster if QB Stephen McGee does not perform better during preseason games, reports ESPNDallas.com's Calvin Watkins. The team could use his roster space for an extra special teams player.

Footballguys view: If the Cowboys try to sneak McGee through to the practice squad there will be other teams waiting to pounce on him once he hits the waiver wire. McGee is still developing on his raw skill set, but has the moxie, athleticism, and football intelligence to be a starting quality quarterback someday.

Cowboys | Very important preseason for QB McGee    Wed Aug 4, 02:16 PM

Bryan Broaddus, Cowboys Insider for ESPNDallas, said in an interview on The Audible that the Cowboys were going to give third-string QB Stephen McGee every opportunity to shine in the preseason. Broaddus notes that this is a very important preseason for McGee as the team needs to see how he's developing for the future.

Footballguys view: Jon Kitna is no spring chicken, so McGee could be primed to take over as the primary backup to Tony Romo in 2011. If McGee is not developing properly then the team would have to be looking for two backup quarterbacks in the near future. We like McGee's athleticism and moxie, but he's very raw and will need to perform well in the preseason in order to impress the coaching staff.
