Steelers | Three working as possible punt returners Sun Aug 2, 05:18 PM
CBSSports.com reports Pittsburgh Steelers CB Joe Burnett, RB Mewelde Moore and WR Shaun McDonald are working as possible punt returners Sunday, Aug. 2.
Footballguys view: Head coach Mike Tomlin wants to take WR Santonio Holmes off punt return duties. Burnett might be the best option here. While at Central Florida he was an 8-time All Conference choice. Three times as a cornerback, four times as a punt returner, and once as a kick returner. In addition to 16 interceptions, Burnett had 5 special teams touchdowns over his college career. |

Steelers | McDonald competing for No. 3 receiver spot Tue Jun 16, 11:27 AM
Scott Brown, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Shaun McDonald is in the mix for a spot on the rotation at wide receiver behind WR Hines Ward and WR Santonio Holmes.
Footballguys view: Head coach Mike Tomlin said the spots behind Ward and Holmes will be wide open when the team starts training camp. 'They didn't tell me what my role is going to be,' said McDonald. 'We're all competing.' Some people had automatically put Limas Sweed in the 3rd WR role now that Nate Washington is with the Titans, but when the Steelers signed McDonald it was a sign that they wanted more competition for that position. Sweed is a big, strong receiver that is best used as a red zone threat because of his size but he has inconsistent hands and is not a great route runner. Shaun McDonald hasn't duplicated the type of production he had under Mike Martz but has good hands and decent route running ability. At this time Sweed has to be considered the frontrunner for the #3 job, but we'll see if he can hold off McDonald during training camp. |

Steelers | McDonald open to returning punts Wed May 6, 07:13 PM
Teresa Varley, of Steelers.com, reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Shaun McDonald said he would be willing to be a punt returner for the team this season. 'I am ready to do whatever I need to do. Whatever they let me do I will be out there trying to make plays and trying to help the team,' McDonald said.
Footballguys view: Shaun McDonald will have plenty of competition in the receiving corps but could help his status by doubling as a returner. He could possibly play a Cedric Wilson-type role for the World Champions. |
Steelers | Sign four free agents Fri May 1, 09:23 AM
The Pittsburgh Steelers announced they have signed free agents P Dirk Johnson (Cardinals), WR Shaun McDonald (Lions), WR Jayson Foster (Broncos) and PK Piotr Czech (Ravens). Terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Shaun McDonald hasn't looked the same on the field since Mike Martz left Detroit. The Steelers drafted Mike Wallace to push Limas Sweed, so McDonald could be their 5th WR at best. |
