Eagles | Carson Wentz leaves in second quarter    Sun Sep 15, 09:15 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz (ribs) left the Week 2 game against the Atlanta Falcons due to an apparent rib injury. He took a shot to the mid-section from the helmet of a defender. Initially he stayed in the game, but then he left for the medical tent late in the second quarter, replaced by QB Josh McCown.

Philadelphia Eagles QB Josh McCown completed 17 of 24 passes for 192 yards and two TDs during the team's 26-15 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday, Aug. 22. He's in line to back up QB Carson Wentz, at least until QB Nate Sudfeld (wrist) is healthy.

Eagles | PHI backup QB situation somewhat unsettled    Sun Aug 18, 11:44 AM

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said no decision has been made on whether QB Josh McCown or QB Nate Sudfeld (wrist) would be the team's second quarterback once Sudfeld's broken left wrist has fully healed.

Footballguys view: Sudfeld is a tall pocket passer and we've always appreciated his skill set in deep dynasty formats. McCown is the seasoned veteran who gives the Eagles quality depth if starter Carson Wentz is banged up again.

Eagles | Josh McCown signed    Sat Aug 17, 11:01 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles signed free-agent QB Josh McCown (Jets) to a one-year contract Saturday, Aug. 17, according to multiple sources.

Footballguys view: McCown had retired following the 2018 season to become a broadcaster for ESPN but will put those plans on hold until after this season. He'll work as the backup to Carson Wentz in 2019. The Eagles needed help at the position with Nate Sudfeld (wrist) and Cody Kessler (concussion) banged up.

Jets | Josh McCown calls it a career    Mon Jun 17, 02:01 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown announced his retirement via The Players' Tribune on Monday, June 17.

Footballguys view: McCown had a 17-year football career and now finds his way to the TV studio as an analyst for ESPN. Largely a backup or bridge quarterback during his pro career, McCown was a solid player no matter where he went in 10 different NFL stops (and one year with the Hartford Colonials in the UFL).

New York Jets impending free-agent QB Josh McCown said he has informed the Jets that he needs more time with his family before deciding if he will play in 2019.

Footballguys view: McCown could keep playing as a veteran backup and make millions. The Jets may move on and find a different backup to Sam Darnold in 2019.

Jets | Week 14 injury report for NYJ    Fri Dec 7, 04:29 PM

New York Jets WR Robby Anderson (ankle), RB Isaiah Crowell (toe), TE Jordan Leggett (knee) and CB Buster Skrine (shoulder) were listed as limited participants for practice Friday, Dec. 7 and each is considered questionable for Week 14 against the Buffalo Bills. OT Kelvin Beachum (knee), RB Trenton Cannon (hamstring), CB Morris Claiborne (shoulder, neck), QB Sam Darnold (foot), WR Quincy Enunwa (ankle), LB Jordan Jenkins (shoulder), LB Darron Lee (not injury related), C Spencer Long (knee, finger, illness), QB Josh McCown (back), LB Kevin Pierre-Louis (thumb), WR Andre Roberts (foot) and TE Eric Tomlinson (elbow) practiced in full and each are off the injury report ahead of Sunday's game.

Footballguys view: Anderson and Crowell should play but both have unfavorable matchups at Buffalo this week. The Jets offense will get Sam Darnold back this week, but the Bills defense destroyed them in Week 10 and they are the best D/ST play in this AFC Least matchup.

Jets | Week 13 injury report for NY Jets    Fri Nov 30, 03:53 PM

New York Jets S Marcus Maye (shoulder, thumb) did not practice all week and has been ruled out for Week 13 versus the Tennessee Titans. WR Robby Anderson (ankle) and QB Sam Darnold (foot) were limited in practice Friday, Nov. 30, and are listed as questionable. RB Trenton Cannon (hamstring), WR Quincy Enunwa (ankle), LB Jordan Jenkins (shoulder), QB Josh McCown (back, hand), OT Kelvin Beachum (knee), CB Morris Claiborne (shoulder), C Spencer Long (knee, finger), DT Steve McLendon (ankle), TE Eric Tomlinson (elbow) and WR Andre Roberts (foot) fully participated in practice Friday and no longer appear on the injury report.

Jets | Josh McCown getting another start    Fri Nov 23, 01:33 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown will start in Week 12 after QB Sam Darnold was ruled out Friday, Nov. 23, with a foot injury.

Footballguys view: McCown might get Robby Anderson back and the Patriots defense isn't a tough matchup, but he looked like a shadow of the resourceful, daring quarterback he was last year in the Week 10 blowout loss to the Bills. He's a desperation play and one to target with a streaming defense.

Jets | Josh McCown struggles in Week 10    Sun Nov 11, 05:35 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown went 17-for-34 for 135 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions against the Buffalo Bills in Week 10.

Footballguys view: McCown was no improvement from Sam Darnold which means he was a disaster. The Jets offense is in dire straits no matter who starts after the bye next week.

Jets | Josh McCown to face Buffalo    Sat Nov 10, 09:49 AM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown will start Week 10's game against the Buffalo Bills.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Rookie Sam Darnold has a foot injury that needs to get some rest in order to heal up. The Jets may have Darnold as McCown's backup this week as they only have two active quarterbacks on the roster. They do have Davis Webb on their practice squad but there's no word if they'd activate him to play as a backup or not.

Jets | NYJ QB decision waiting on preseason finale    Tue Aug 28, 11:36 AM

New York Jets QBs Sam Darnold, Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater all are in the running to start in Week 1, and Jets head coach Todd Bowles said he likely will wait until after the team's preseason finale Thursday, Aug. 30, to make the decision. 'Sitting down with the coaches, we'll go over everything and everybody will give their opinion,' Bowles said. 'We just haven't talked about it, and we won't until after the last preseason game. We'll sit down as a staff and we'll go over every position, including that one, and we'll come out with our guys.'

Footballguys view: The Jets have a good problem but it is a problem nonetheless. Darnold is the quarterback of the future and the 2018 first-round pick has the potential to be a franchise player. They might determine he's not yet ready. Bridgewater has played well this preseason and was/is on the trade block. No takers for Bridgewater just yet means the team might just begin the year with him as the starter. McCown is the safe 'in case of emergency' veteran who could start in a pinch.

Jets | All three Jets QBs to play Friday    Wed Aug 8, 07:41 PM

New York Jets QBs Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewater and Sam Darnold will all receive playing time in the preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons Friday, Aug. 9, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: McCown doesn't need a ton of reps in the first preseason game. Bridgewater could use more time as he is trying to prove himself after that devastating knee injury that knocked him out of the Vikings starting lineup years ago. Darnold is the rookie and the quarterback of the future for the Jets, so he may get the most time.

Jets | Josh McCown will start at camp    Thu Jun 14, 01:35 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown will begin training camp as the starting quarterback, according to head coach Todd Bowles. The starter for Week 1, however, is up in the air.

Footballguys view: We've heard a ton of buzz about Teddy Bridgewater and rookie Sam Darnold, but the Jets know that being good in shorts and a t-shirt is different than good against a real pass rush. Both quarterbacks will have to earn a starting spot, and while we don't think McCown will hold both off, the Jets are wisely making no promises save to give the best guy the job. Whether that's McCown, Bridgewater or Darnold, from a fantasy perspective we are avoiding this group, given the uncertainties of each and the limitations of the offensive skill players around them.

Jets | Teddy Bridgewater could be Week 1 starter    Thu May 24, 03:15 PM

New York Jets QB Teddy Bridgewater will be considered for the starting quarterback job Week 1 if he plays well during the preseason and QB Sam Darnold shows he is not ready to play, according to sources. QB Josh McCown likely would be the starter if Bridgewater and Darnold struggle during the preseason.

Footballguys view: Neither outcome is shocking to anyone who has paid attention to the Jets this offseason. We are a little excited to see what Bridgewater is capable of after such a long layoff, but the lack of good and reliable weapons around him limit his upside. McCown would be the same middling quarterback he's always been and not really worth rostering.

Jets | Sam Darnold has shot to start Week 1    Fri May 4, 03:26 PM

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold will be given the chance to beat out Josh McCown and win the starting job in training camp, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Darnold should sit and learn for a bit, but if he's ready to roll then the Jets have no time to waste. Coming out of USC, Darnold has to learn how to better care for the football. He has a propensity to turn the ball over with too many interceptions and fumbles. In addition to cleaning that up, Darnold could use some tweaks to his throwing mechanics. Oh yeah, he's also just 20-years old so perhaps a little more time would be best for his long-term outlook in the pros.

Jets | Josh McCown to enter camp as starter    Tue Mar 27, 02:48 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown will enter training camp as the team's starting quarterback, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: McCown will likely begin the season as the starter. The Jets should take a quarterback with the no.3 overall pick. Whatever quarterback that is should push McCown early for the job.

Jets | Josh McCown to be starter    Tue Mar 13, 05:15 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown has been told that he will be the starting quarterback for the Jets in 2018, but the team is still interested in signing Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater, according to a source.

Footballguys view: McCown stays with the team for a good price, but they're still on the hunt for their future franchise quarterback. That could be Bridgewater, but his incredibly serious knee injury suffered in 2016 gives teams pause about his future.

Jets | Josh McCown back with Jets    Tue Mar 13, 04:44 PM

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Jets) agreed to a one-year, $10 million deal to re-sign with the New York Jets, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Reports indicate McCown is back as the team's starter as well. They have interest in Teddy Bridgewater and could bring him in as a backup with the potential to be a starter if his knee/leg is okay after a devastating injury suffered in August of 2016.

Jets | One more year for Josh McCown?    Sat Mar 10, 11:47 PM

New York Jets impending free-agent QB Josh McCown will likely be re-signed to a one-year deal worth about $8 million, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com, and Cimini believes McCown will serve as a 'bridge' quarterback to a rookie.

Footballguys view: That seems to be the best for both parties here. McCown sticks with the team he knows well and gets to groom whatever young QB the Jets add in the draft. With the no6 overall pick the Jets may want to move up for one of the top QBs that could be off the board at that time.

Jets | Josh McCown hopes to return to Jets    Fri Feb 2, 06:08 PM

New York Jets impending free-agent QB Josh McCown said he hopes to re-sign with the Jets this offseason and would not have a problem being a bridge quarterback for the team.

Footballguys view: McCown elevated the Jets to a competitive team most weeks and even a contender in the first half of the season. He was clearly good for the team and they should be happy to bring him back for market value whether they draft a quarterback or not, but maybe especially if they do so McCown can rub off on them.

Jets | Josh McCown close to 100 percent    Thu Jan 25, 08:56 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown (hand) said his broken left hand that he sustained in the club's Week 14 matchup against the Denver Broncos is still 'healing up' and that he's just 'a few weeks away' from being 100 percent.

Footballguys view: McCown elevated the competitiveness and offensive prowess of the Jets and would be welcome on many teams as a strong backup and quasi-coach. If a team needs a bridge starter to a rookie, McCown has proven that he is more than up to the task. We're glad to hear that he plans on playing in 2018.

New York Jets impending free-agent QB Josh McCown is leaning toward playing in 2018 and is hopeful he can do so with the Jets.

Footballguys view: McCown has been considering retirement according to reports, but now it sounds like he may keep playing. The Jets are likely to draft a quarterback with a premium pick this year, but McCown could stick as a valuable veteran backup or bridge starter until the rookie is ready.

Jets | Josh McCown could return    Mon Jan 1, 06:07 PM

New York Jets impending free-agent QB Josh McCown is a player the Jets would be interested in re-signing this offseason, according to head coach Todd Bowles. McCown still has not decided if he will continue his playing career.

Footballguys view: McCown is no spring chicken and there has been speculation that he's thinking about retirement. If he does want to keep playing football then the Jets make a lot of sense. He could serve as a bridge quarterback for any rookie the Jets select at the position. Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg are not the long-term answer, and we expect the Jets to make moves to add a young, potential franchise QB.

Jets | Josh McCown has surgery    Thu Dec 14, 12:52 AM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown (hand) underwent surgery to repair his broken left hand on Tuesday, Dec. 12, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Bryce Petty is 'the guy' for the Jets from here until a mysterious injury puts Christian Hackenberg under center. Or, assuming Todd Bowles is telling the truth, Petty is just playing out the rest of the year and we won't see Hackenberg who clearly hasn't earned the chance to play. Which tells you all you need to know about the Jets quarterbacks.

Jets | Josh McCown placed on IR    Tue Dec 12, 06:55 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown (hand) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Footballguys view: McCown is a free agent next offseason and his future in the NFL is uncertain at this time. The Jets performed better than expected this year with McCown at the helm. He could always return to be a 'bridge' quarterback to a rookie....or some other team could bring him on board as a similar role.

Jets | Josh McCown done for season    Mon Dec 11, 03:10 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown (hand) is done for the season and will have surgery to fix his broken left hand, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

New York Jets QB Josh McCown (back) was taken to the locker room in the third quarter of the Week 14 game against the Denver Broncos. QB Bryce Petty replaced him.

Jets | Josh McCown to start final four games    Thu Dec 7, 02:10 AM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown will remain the team's starting quarterback for the remainder of the season, barring injury, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: On the one hand, McCown is playing reasonably well, the Jets have an outside shot at a playoff spot and Bowles is ostensibly fighting for his job, so why mess with current success? On the other hand, nobody gets to see what Bryce Petty or Christian Hackenberg can do, and it's hard not to think we're seeing that they haven't shown enough to get a shot. As far as the fantasy world goes, McCown faces a streaky Denver defense this week, and while he's not reliable enough for a QB1 start, he should put up excellent QB2 numbers.

Jets | Josh McCown accounts for three touchdowns    Sun Dec 3, 05:37 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown went 26-for-36 for 331 yards and one touchdown against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 13. He also rushed for 19 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries during the game.

Footballguys view: McCown kept answering the big plays his defense kept giving up to the Chiefs offense. He was excellent passing downfield to his receivers for the second straight week and put together a lot of long, sustained drives. The Broncos defense is disintegrating and that means McCown is a QB1 next week.

New York Jets QB Josh McCown (wrist) was a full participant in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Nov. 30.

Footballguys view: McCown has played about how we expected him to - good at times, badly at others. He's done what he needed to as an NFL bridge quarterback. For fantasy purposes, he's really no more than a low-end QB2/high end QB3 though, and should only be used if you have injury issues.

Footballguys view: The Jets have Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty behind McCown but they're not turning to one of those young quarterbacks just yet. While the Jets aren't going anywhere, they are not officially eliminated from the postseason. McCown retains streaming value for fantasy owners so long as he's the starter.
