Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins (non-injury) did not practice Friday, Sept. 29, as he awaits the birth of his first child. If Cousins chooses to sit out Week 4, QB Colt McCoy would replace him in the lineup Monday versus the Kansas City Chiefs. 'We're getting Colt ready to play,' head coach Jay Gruden said.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins to remain starter    Fri Sep 25, 09:07 AM

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins will remain the starting quarterback, according to Redskins head coach Jay Gruden. During his post-game press conference, Gruden was asked if he had thought about pulling Cousins in favor of QB Colt McCoy. Without hesitation, Gruden said there is no quarterback controversy. Cousins has struggled against the New York Giants in three starts, throwing one touchdown pass against eight interceptions.

Footballguys view: Cousins is a game manager backup quarterback forced into the starting role. He'll be fine when the Washington running game controls the game, but if he has to comeback football like he did last night, Cousins will be exposed.

Redskins | Robert Griffin III to stay as third QB    Mon Sep 14, 01:07 AM

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III will remain third on the depth chart behind QB Kirk Cousins and QB Colt McCoy, according to sources.

Footballguys view: With the way that Kirk Cousins looked as the starter, a change in the QB order could (should?) be in the future. The next guy up should be Colt McCoy, but it's not outlandish to think that Griffin could eventually find his way back to the starter's job. Fantasy owners need to avoid this situation.

Redskins | Robert Griffin to stay with Washington    Sat Sep 5, 09:35 AM

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (concussion) will remain with the team and be the No. 2 quarterback, according to sources.

Footballguys view: That is a bit surprising given how things have went down with Griffin. The team is still waiting for Griffin to pass of his concussion tests. QB Colt McCoy will serve as the backup for Week 1 because of Griffin's injury.

Redskins | Colt McCoy, Kirk Cousins battling    Fri Aug 21, 07:58 PM

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy replaced QB Robert Griffin III (concussion, shoulder) when he was injured in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 20, not QB Kirk Cousins.

Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this situation in deeper leagues. Cousins is expected to be the backup entering the season, but head coach Jay Gruden said it remains an 'open competition' for the backup job.

Washington | Backup QB battle will last through preseason    Mon Jun 22, 09:07 PM

Mike Jones, from the Washington Post, reports the battle for Washington's backup quarterback should last through training camp and the preseason. Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy have been rotating backup reps this offseason.

Footballguys view: Starter Robert Griffin III is in a make-or-break season in Washington. He needs to stay healthy and impress as the starter if he wants to stick as the team's top quarterback. If he gets banged up again, then we'll see one of these backups. McCoy has looked better than Cousins, but he'll have to continue proving himself in the preseason.

Redskins | Washington backup QB job up for grabs    Fri Jun 19, 12:06 AM

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy and QB Kirk Cousins have created no separation from each other in their battle to be the primary backup quarterback in 2015, and head coach Jay Gruden said their performance in the preseason games could be the deciding factor.

Footballguys view: McCoy isn't going to go down without a fight. It's a good problem for Washington to have, and a battle for dynasty owners to monitor in training camp.

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III will be the first-team quarterback during offseason workouts, according to head Jay Gruden, but Gruden also said he expects QB Kirk Cousins and QB Colt McCoy to be on the roster when the regular season begins.

Footballguys view: This is shaping up to be a make-or-break season for Griffin. He'll be healthy, and he needs to improve his play if he wants to continue as the quarterback for Washington. We'll see if the team can craft an offense that best suits his talents.

Redskins | Colt McCoy re-signs    Tue Mar 17, 12:19 PM

Free-agent QB Colt McCoy re-signed with the Washington Redskins Tuesday, March 17, according to a league source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: McCoy looked like the best quarterback on the Washington roster last year. He'll once again serve as a third-string player behind Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins. If those two get hurt or struggle to perform, then McCoy could come in and look good again.

Redskins | Colt McCoy not expected to return    Wed Mar 4, 08:20 PM

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy is not expected to return to the team next season, even though he started four games in 2014 when QBs Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins had been benched by head coach Jay Gruden.

Footballguys view: McCoy should still kick around as a backup somewhere in the NFL. He looked good last season as a spot starter for Washington, but McCoy was knocked out for the season after a neck injury suffered in Week 15 against the New York Giants.

Redskins | Colt McCoy has herniated disk    Thu Dec 18, 01:41 PM

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy (neck) is dealing with a bulging disk in his neck and likely would have been sidelined for a few weeks. McCoy has been placed on the Reserve/Injured list.

Footballguys view: Well, we knew McCoy was done. Robert Griffin III is under center, and fantasy owners should consider him a QB2 with upside. Given how poor the offense has been and how the Eagles can bring pressure, Griffin could be in for a long weekend.

Redskins | Colt McCoy should heal quickly    Tue Dec 16, 04:21 PM

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy (neck) was told by doctors that he only needs two to three weeks for the aggravated nerve in his neck to heal and that it shouldn't be an issue in the future.

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III was 18-for-27 for 236 yards and a touchdown in the team's loss to the New York Giants in Week 15, and head coach Jay Gruden is unsure if Griffin will start again in Week 15 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Gruden wants to watch film and learn more about QB Colt McCoy's (neck) injury. '(Griffin) is obviously in the mix,' Gruden said. 'He came out here and competed, which I liked. Made some good throws and made some great plays with his legs, but from a consistent standpoint, the production on third downs and the lack of production in the second half (offensively) was concerning. I'll have to check the film to give him a total grade.' McCoy headed for the locker room after the first series of the game.

Redskins | Questionable status for Colt McCoy    Fri Dec 12, 01:37 PM

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy (neck) practiced in full and took all the first-team repetitions Friday, Dec. 12, but he's listed as questionable for Week 15 against the New York Giants. McCoy must first be cleared by a specialist before playing in Week 15.

Footballguys view: Washington is certainly preparing for McCoy to start. It helps the case for Jordan Reed, but hurts Alfred Morris, who would benefit more from the running threat Robert Griffin III would provide.

Redskins | Colt McCoy limited in practice    Thu Dec 11, 02:51 PM

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy (neck) is limited in practice Thursday, Dec. 11.

Redskins | Colt McCoy to start if healthy    Thu Dec 11, 01:34 PM

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy (neck) will start in Week 15 if he cleared to play by the doctors, according to head coach Jay Gruden. QB Robert Griffin III likely would start if McCoy is not able to play.

Footballguys view: Gruden seems to be done with Griffin...unless he's forced to play him because of injury. McCoy was tossed around like a rag doll last week, and we'll have to wait until the end of the week to see if he can practice fully.

Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy (neck) has no structural damage to his neck, but there is doubt that he'll be able to play in Week 15 against the New York Giants. A team source said the injury isn't thought to be career-ending, but they want to see some range of motion and flexibility from McCoy and see how he improves during the week. McCoy visited with a specialist Monday, Dec. 8. QB Robert Griffin III would start if McCoy is out against the Giants.

Redskins | Robert Griffin would start if McCoy can't    Mon Dec 8, 03:09 PM

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III would start if QB Colt McCoy (neck) is unable to play. McCoy suffered a neck strain in Week 14.

Footballguys view: McCoy was getting tossed around like a rag doll on Sunday. Fantasy owners should prepare for Griffin to be back in the starting lineup. With his recent play, there's not a lot to like. Perhaps his benching will be a wake-up call for the young quarterback and he'll start performing better.

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said Sunday, Nov. 30, that QB Colt McCoy will remain the starting quarterback heading into Week 14.

Redskins | Colt McCoy could start past Week 13    Wed Nov 26, 12:58 PM

Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy will start past Week 13 if he plays well, although the move may not be permanent.

Footballguys view: Once McCoy was announced as the starter, all bets were off for Robert Griffin III. Reports indicate he's still in the team's long-term plans, but this is also the same coach (Jay Gruden) who said that Griffin was starting in Week 13 on Monday. According Gruden, McCoy gives the team the best chance to win now.

Redskins | Colt McCoy officially starting    Wed Nov 26, 09:33 AM

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III has officially been benched in favor of QB Colt McCoy in Week 13. Head coach Jay Gruden informed the team Wednesday, Nov. 26.

Footballguys view: The Griffin era may be coming to a close in Washington. Griffin's mechanics have been off this year, and that has been hurting his accuracy. His decision making has been poor as well. McCoy looked good in limited action this year, and his teammates loves him. In two appearances this year, McCoy has completed 85.7 percent of his passes. While some believe Griffin could still be a large part of their long-term plans, McCoy could remain the starter for the rest of the season.

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) could play against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9, according to head coach Jay Gruden. 'We'll see it's all going to depend on how he does in tomorrow and Friday,' Gruden said. 'And moving forward, how I feel he's coming back. Washington Redskins QB Colt McCoy will start Week 8, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

Washington Redskins QBs Robert Griffin III (ankle) and Colt McCoy hopefully will find out the starting quarterback for Week 8 by Thursday, Oct. 23, according to head coach Jay Gruden.

Footballguys view: Gruden said Griffin will either start or be inactive for the game. We'd love to see Griffin's return this week (especially in a big game against the Cowboys), but we feel McCoy is going to get the start.   Redskins | Robert Griffin to be tested Wednesday    Mon Oct 20, 12:39 PM

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) is expected to be put through a rigorous workout Wednesday, Oct. 22, that will give team officials a better idea of where he's at in his recovery. Griffin has already joined practices for stretching, warm-ups, individual drills and limited handoffs with the scout team. Head coach Jay Gruden has said he'd like to have Griffin log at least two weeks of practice before returning to a starting role. QB Colt McCoy appears to have the inside track to start in Week 8 against the Dallas Cowboys if it's between he and QB Kirk Cousins. "It's a good sign the way Colt finished the game, ran the offense," Gruden said, alluding to his poise and efficiency in engineering the game-winning touchdown drive on the last possession, which started with 3 minutes and 14 seconds remaining. "Very smart and very efficient. Did some good things."

Footballguys view: The Cousins time is almost over (if not already) in Washington. Gruden said in his press conference on Monday that Colt McCoy would actually get starter reps this week after replacing Cousins in Week 7. We'll see if Griffin can get back to practice and perform at an acceptable level so he can start on Monday Night Football in Week 8.

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (ankle) could start in Week 8 against the Dallas Cowboys if he looks really good in practice Wednesday, Oct. 22, according to a team source. The team would ideally like to hold him out another week in order to prepare.

Footballguys view: If we don't see Griffin this upcoming week, then Colt McCoy will likely receive the starting nod for the first time since December of 2011 when he was with the Cleveland Browns. McCoy threw a touchdown pass to Pierre Garcon on his first throw after replacing Kirk Cousins, but we're not excited about his prospects against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8.
