NFL | Le'Ron McClain hopes to play in 2014    Sat Jun 21, 09:35 PM

Free-agent FB Le'Ron McClain (Ravens) has been working out this offseason and expects a team call him before the start of training camp. McClain has lost 15 pounds this offseason and is looking to be as fast as he can.

Footballguys view: Fullbacks are essentially dinosaurs in the NFL. McClain had a fine career and is a talented player, but we can't imagine a ton of teams knocking down his door.

Chargers | Le'Ron McClain cut    Tue Mar 4, 01:10 PM

The San Diego Chargers released FB Le'Ron McClain Tuesday, March 4. The move saves the team $2.5 million for the salary cap.

Footballguys view: McClain turned into a bit player in Ken Whisenhunt's offense last year, and apparently new offensive coordinator Frank Reich also has little use for him.

Chargers | Le'Ron McClain could be released    Mon Mar 3, 11:37 PM

San Diego Chargers FB Le'Ron McClain is set to make $2.5 million in base salary with a $3.3 million cap number. The team is looking to pare down its payroll, and his release would save $2.5 million.

Chargers | Le'Ron McClain could be cap casualty    Tue Feb 4, 05:30 PM

San Diego Chargers FB Le'Ron McClain, who is scheduled to make $2.5 million in base salary in 2014 as one of the highest paid fullbacks in the league, is unlikely to return at that salary cap figure, especially when he played in just 12 percent of the team's offensive snaps last season.

Footballguys view: The Mike McCoy system doesn't really use a fullback all that often. McClain could hit a rather cold open market. That's the way it goes for aging players at that position.

Chargers | Friday injury report for Week 16    Fri Dec 20, 05:02 PM

Chargers | Friday injury report for Week 11    Fri Nov 15, 04:31 PM

San Diego Chargers OT King Dunlap (neck) has been ruled out for Week 11. FB Le'Ron McClain (ankle), C Nick Hardwick (neck), LB Jarret Johnson (hamstring) and SS Jahleel Addae (ankle) are listed as questionable. OG Chad Rinehart (toe), OT D.J. Fluker (illness), OT Mike Remmers (ankle), DE Lawrence Guy (toe) and LB Manti Te'o (elbow) are listed as probable. Dunlap and Fluker did not participate in practice Friday, Nov. 15. McClain, Harwick, Johnson and Addae were limited during practice while the other players fully participated in practice.

Footballguys view: Dunlap has actually been a lifesaver for the Chargers at left tackle, so he'll be missed as Fluker will now protect Philip Rivers' blindside, and Jeromey Clary will play right tackle.

Chargers | Several candidates to be released    Sun Feb 10, 04:40 PM

San Diego Chargers FB Le'Ron McClain, TE Randy McMichael, WR Eddie Royal, OT Jared Gaither and OT Jeromey Clary could be candidates to be released this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Chargers need to focus on rebuilding their Offensive Line this offseason. They need help all across the line in order to protect QB Philip Rivers better in 2013. Royal was a disappointing free agent signing and may have to move on this season to his third team in three years.

Chargers | Running game goes nowhere fast    Tue Sep 11, 01:51 AM

San Diego Chargers RB Curtis Brinkley carried 10 times for just 12 yards in Week 1 against the Oakland Raiders Monday, Sept. 10. He and WR Eddie Royal actually led the team in rushing yardage. RB Ronnie Brown carried five times for just five yards, while FB Le'Ron McClain had two carries for five yards.

Footballguys view: Ryan Mathews can't come back fast enough. He missed the game with his clavicle injury but may be back in the next week or so.

Chargers | To use RB committee    Sun Aug 12, 11:44 PM

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner indicated Sunday, Aug. 12, that the team will use a running back by committee approach until RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) is healthy enough to return. 'Right now, it'd probably be a mix' between RBs Ronnie Brown, Le'Ron McClain and Curtis Brinkley.

Footballguys view: We're hearing that Brinkley may be the guy to emerge in this RBBC. The coaching staff loves him and he plays with a nice blend of balance and elusiveness. Brown is more versatile but not the same player he used to be when he came out of Auburn years ago.

Chargers | Trio of RBs to get long look    Fri Aug 10, 11:05 PM

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said Friday, Aug. 10, that he did not anticipate the team bringing in a running back with RB Ryan Mathews (clavicle) sidelined four to six weeks. That means RBs Jackie Battle, Curtis Brinkley, Ronnie Brown and FB Le'Ron McClain are likely to shoulder the load during the remaining preseason games.

Footballguys view: Brown is the most versatile of the group, but he's not been impressive in recent years. McClain hasn't received a significant workload in a few years but is an effective between the tackles runner.

Chargers | Two favorites for complementary touches at RB    Fri Jul 20, 11:59 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Ronnie Brown and FB Le'Ron McClain are considered the favorites for complementary touches behind starting RB Ryan Mathews heading into training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: Mathews is going to get a huge workload this season and could finish the year as a top 5 fantasy RB. When he needs a breather we feel the team will rely mostly on Brown. However, if it's a short-yardage situation then we could see them look to the bigger and more powerful McClain.

Chargers | Edwin Baker, Le'Ron McClain in mix for carries    Tue Jun 26, 10:11 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews is the unquestioned starting tailback, but it gets murky after that on the depth chart. RB Ronnie Brown is viewed as being at the tail end of his career. Brown will try to hold off RB Curtis Brinkley for the primary backup role behind Mathews. RB Edwin Baker and FB Le'Ron McClain will also be in the mix for carries.

Footballguys view: McClain had nearly 1,000-yards rushing for the Ravens in 2008, but hasn't been asked to carry the rock in recent years. Baker has good lower body strength, elite quickness, and good initial burst. However, he lacks top end speed and is nothing more than a change of pace back in our eyes.

Chargers | Ryan Mathews frontrunner for third down role    Fri Jun 1, 04:20 PM

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said RB Ryan Mathews appears to be the frontrunner for the third-down running back role entering training camp. RB Curtis Brinkley and FB Le'Ron McClain could also be options for the role.

Footballguys view: Just another sign that Mathews is in for a bigger role in 2012. If he can stay healthy it wouldn't surprise us to see him finish as a top 5 fantasy RB this year.

Chargers | No plans to add more RBs to the roster    Fri Jun 1, 01:50 PM

Michael Gehlken, from the San Diego Union Tribune, reports the Chargers have no immediate plans to add more RBs to the roster. According to a team source they are currently focused on analyzing the RBs already in place.

Footballguys view: More news about the Chargers RB corps here and more evidence that Ryan Mathews could be their true workhorse. They let FB Mike Tolbert go in free agency which opens the door for Mathews to get more touches. He finished last year as the 7th best RB in fantasy football and could crack the top 5 in 2012.

Chargers | RB Mathews to get 'everything he can handle'    Tue May 29, 06:55 PM

Mark Gehlken, from the San Diego Union Tribune, reports via Twitter that Chargers head coach Norv Turner told reporters after practice that RB Ryan Mathews would get "everything he can handle" in 2012.

Footballguys view: This could be fantastic news for Mathews fantasy owners this year. Mathews is no longer going to be splitting touches as FB Mike Tolbert moved on to the Panthers in free agency. Turner is looking for Mathews to be the workhorse they drafted him to be. After finishing last year as the 7th best RB in fantasy football, Mathews could crack the top 5 this year. His current ADP is 1.07 in standard 12-team leagues.

Chargers | FB McClain gives the team options    Sat May 19, 01:01 PM

Bill Williamson, from ESPN.com, reports San Diego Chargers FB Le'Ron McClain gives the team options because of his versatility. Chargers head coach Norv Turner recently said in a radio interview "He's a good runner, he's got good catching skills and I think he'll be a big addition."

Footballguys view: The Chargers lost Mike Tolbert in free agency to the Panthers and need a complementary ball carrier behind Ryan Mathews. McClain is proven as a runner, but hasn't received significant carries since the 2008 season when he was with the Ravens. That year he had 232 carries for 902 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Chargers | Le'Ron McClain to open holes for Ryan Mathews    Fri Mar 16, 01:35 PM

The main role for FB Le'Ron McClain will be to clear space for third-year RB Ryan Mathews.

Footballguys view: McClain is a decent runner between the tackles and good receiver out of the backfield too. However, we don't think he'll be as involved in the ground game as Mike Tolbert was. This could be good news for Ryan Mathews if he can stay healthy.

The San Diego Chargers agreed to terms with free-agent FB Le'Ron McClain (Ravens) Wednesday, March 14, on a three-year deal, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: McClain will take the place of Mike Tolbert on the Chargers roster. He shouldn't get as many carries or receptions as Tolbert, so that extra production could go to Ryan Mathews.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel said the team is interested in re-signing impending free-agent FB Le'Ron McClain this offseason.

Kansas City Chiefs interim coach Romeo Crennel said Wednesday, Dec. 28, that the team doesn't have a lot of depth in the backfield for Week 17 if RB Jackie Battle (foot) cannot play. 'You might say we're borderline as far as depth goes,' Crennel said. FB Le'Ron McClain might get carries along with RBs Thomas Jones and Dexter McCluster.   Chiefs | Jackie Battle could see bigger workload    Thu Oct 6, 11:45 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs could turn to RB Jackie Battle earlier in their Week 5 game. Battle has emerged as a viable part of the rotation at running back after securing a huge first down late in the team's Week 4 game. With the Chiefs limiting RB Dexter McCluster because of his diminutive size and with RB Thomas Jones and FB Le'Ron McClain being ineffective running the ball, Battle should see more playing time.

Footballguys view: Battle is a versatile player who can be used effectively as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. He doesn't have elite gifts and is still going to be used in a 3-headed RBBC. That's why we're not expecting Battle to be much of a fantasy factor, even if he does get a bigger workload.

Chiefs | Will use committee at RB    Wed Sep 21, 02:12 PM

Updating a previous report, the Kansas City Chiefs will be using a running back by committee approach because of the injury to RB Jamaal Charles (knee). RBs Dexter McCluster, Thomas Jones and Jackie Battle and FB Le'Ron McClain could receive carries the rest of the season.

Footballguys view: We think the Chiefs will use Jones and McClain when the game is close. However, if they fall behind and have to go into 'catch up' mode on offense they will turn to McCluster. He could be a sneaky good addition in PPR leagues as we expect KC to play from behind a lot.

Chiefs | Le'Ron McClain could get carries    Wed Sep 21, 12:59 PM

Kansas City Chiefs FB Le'Ron McClain could receive some carries moving forward because he has shown in his career that he has the ability to carry the ball and succeed when given the chance.

Footballguys view: McClain rushed for 902 yards in 2008 and finished that year as the 20th best RB in fantasy football. He wanted more rushing attempts, and it's one of the reasons he left Baltimore. The Chiefs offense is not looking good this year and without Charles they could be downright scary. Perhaps using McClain, in addition to Thomas Jones, will help them grind down defenses.

Chiefs | Le'Ron McClain agrees to terms    Wed Aug 3, 05:09 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms with free-agent FB Le'Ron McClain (Ravens). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Ravens | Le'Ron McClain out of the picture?    Mon Aug 1, 12:56 AM

The Baltimore Ravens may not be interested in re-signing FB/RB Le'Ron McClain now that they have added FB Vonta Leach. The Ravens could use McClain to handle the big-back role that became open with the release of RB Willis McGahee, but that would be a secondary role and it is not clear if McClain would be interested in accepting it.

Footballguys view: McClain hasn't drawn much interest in free agency and could be forced to be a lead blocker despite his ability and desire to run the ball as a tailback.

Chiefs | Le'Ron McClain on radar?    Fri Jul 29, 05:36 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs are showing interest in free-agent FB Le'Ron McClain (Ravens). A deal is not currently imminent, but the Chiefs appear to be in the running for him.

Footballguys view: McClain added all of the Chiefs accounts and media to his Twitter account earlier in the week. He probably wouldn't have value without a Jamaal Charles injury if he lands there.

Chiefs | Could show interest in Le'Ron McClain    Mon Jul 25, 03:13 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs may show interest in free-agent FB Le'Ron McClain (Ravens) once free agency begins.

Footballguys view: McClain is looking for a bigger role and proved back in 2008 that he's more than just a blocking fullback. The Chiefs have an already cramped backfield with superstar Jamaal Charles and veteran Thomas Jones but may see McClain as a good short-yardage and goalline back. If McClain is added to the roster it would negatively impact the fantasy value of Thomas Jones.

Ravens | Le'Ron McClain wants expanded role     Fri Jul 15, 10:11 AM

Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent FB Le'Ron McClain is looking to broaden his appeal with free agency on the horizon. McClain has worked out relentlessly this offseason, dropping weight with the goal of adding speed and quickness in order to be viewed as a threat as a blocker and a runner. 'I have no problem getting in there blocking and getting dirty because I love contact,' McClain said. 'I just want to take my game to another level. No disrespect to anybody, not (offensive coordinator) Cam (Cameron), not (head coach) John Harbaugh, not (running backs) Ray Rice or Willis (McGahee). I just don't want to disrespect my game anymore, like I feel like I've done these last two years.'

Footballguys view: McClain can be a grinder as he's the type of back who wears down an opposing defense. After rushing for over 900 yards in 2008 McClain has played more as a traditional fullback over the last two seasons. He's proven that he can do more than just block and may look for a different opportunity outside of Baltimore as a free agent.

Ravens | Team has interesting decisions on potential free agents    Sat Jul 2, 10:06 PM

Mike Wilkening, from ProFootballWeekly.com, reports the Baltimore Ravens may have some interesting decisions should players need only four years of NFL service to be unrestricted free agents in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. In this scenario, OT Jared Gaither, FB Le'Ron McClain, CB Josh Wilson and OT-OG Marshal Yanda all would be free to sign elsewhere without the Ravens receiving compensation.

Footballguys view: The report from PFW says they've heard Yanda would be the team's first priority because of his ability to play both Right Tackle and Right Guard. If RB Willis McGahee is cut the team could decide to keep McClain because he can play both Running Back and Fullback.

Ravens | RB Parmele the favorite behind Rice?    Mon May 9, 04:59 PM

ProFootballWeekly.com reports many expect Willis McGahee to be released when free agency transactions are allowed. The competition for carries behind Ray Rice could come down to unrestricted free agent FB Le'Ron McClain and veteran Jalen Parmele. PFW says they've heard the Ravens really like the former Toledo star.

Footballguys view: Parmele is one of our favorite unknown RBs in the league. He is a strong runner with enough speed and elusiveness to make a difference at the second level. Parmele is a good receiver out of the backfield and looked good returning kicks for the Ravens last year. The team has been waiting to give him more of an opportunity and this season it could finally happen. Rice's fantasy owners take notice as Parmele may be the correct handcuff behind the diminutive superstar.

Ravens | Depth added at RB with Anthony Allen    Sat Apr 30, 09:07 PM

The Baltimore Ravens selected RB Anthony Allen from Georgia Tech with their seventh round draft pick at No. 225 overall. With the uncertain labor situation, the team isn't certain if they'll be able to retain FB Le'Ron McClain, so depth was needed.

Footballguys view: Allen is a momentum runner who needs to build a head of steam in order to be effective. He's got average instincts and often will be too hesitant at the line of scrimmage.

Ravens | Could bring back Le'Ron McClain as backup RB    Thu Mar 17, 01:10 PM

The Baltimore Ravens may look to re-sign impending free-agent FB Le'Ron McClain this offseason to be more of a backup running back than a fullback, reports Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun.

Footballguys view: McClain could stay with the Ravens as Willis McGahee is expected to move on from Baltimore. This would give the team another valuable backup behind Ray Rice. Jalen Parmele is also on the roster and one of the best backup RBs in the game today.

Ravens | Le'Ron McClain hopes to be return    Fri Mar 11, 02:17 AM

Baltimore Ravens FB Le'Ron McClain said he hopes to return to the team in 2011, although he wishes for more touches, reports Mike Duffy, of BaltimoreRavens.com. 'Le'Ron is probably going (to) evolve his role as a runner in the National Football League,' Harbaugh said. 'We'll keep out fingers crossed that it can be here with the Ravens, but we went to put a bruising fullback in front of our running backs if we can.'

Footballguys view: McClain was a very successful runner in 2008, so he shouldn't be written off as a back who could have a big gain in value during the 2011 free agency period by landing with a team that is willing to give him more touches in the future.

Footballguys view: The Ravens aren't in a hurry to release McGahee, but it seems inevitable this offseason. Two players could really benefit from McGahee being released. FB Le'Ron McClain and RB Jalen Parmele could have a much bigger role in the offseason and get carries and receptions out of the backfield behind Ray Rice.
