NFL | Dexter McCluster keeping dream alive    Thu May 16, 09:30 AM

Former All-Pro WR/KR Dexter McCluster is signing with the Massachusetts Pirates of the National Arena League Thursday, May 16.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick of the Chiefs back in 2010, McCluster has been out of the league since 2016 when he was with the Chargers. He played four games in the 2018 season for the Toronto Argonauts and now is trying to get some attention in the National Arena League.

Chargers | Dexter McCluster to play in Week 3    Thu Sep 22, 12:35 AM

San Diego Chargers RB Dexter McCluster is expected to be active for the Week 3 game against the Indianapolis Colts. He is familiar with the offense, as Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt was his head coach in Tennessee. 'I've pretty much got the offense down,' McCluster said Wednesday, Sept. 21. 'Right now, it's just repetition, being on the same page as the quarterback. I sat in with the offensive line for a short period this morning, just to build that camaraderie, see how I fit in and let them know, 'Hey, I'm serious about what I'm doing'.'

Footballguys view: No surprise here really. McCluster knows the offense, and can get his way onto the field immediately. That doesn't mean he has fantasy relevance in Week 3.

Chargers | Dexter McCluster signs with Chargers    Tue Sep 20, 03:47 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Dexter McCluster (Titans) signed with the San Diego Chargers Tuesday, Sept. 20. WR Isaiah Burse was subsequently waived.

Footballguys view: Without Danny Woodhead, the Chargers needed to sign a change-of-pace back. McCluster knows the system as he worked under Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt when the two were with the Titans. McCluster can fill the Woodhead role, but he won't look as good or be as productive. We think Melvin Gordon gets an even larger role with Woodhead out.

Chargers | San Diego likely to sign Dexter McCluster    Tue Sep 20, 01:40 PM

Free-agent RB Dexter McCluster (Titans) is expected to sign RB Dexter McCluster shortly to fill the pass-catching role out of the backfield left behind by the season-ending ACL injury to Danny Woodhead, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Footballguys view: McCluster played under Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt when both were with the Tennessee Titans. He can play the Woodhead role, he just won't look as good or be as productive. We still think Woodhead's injury just opens the door for Melvin Gordon to do more -- and he's looked fantastic this year.

Titans | Dexter McCluster let go    Fri Sep 2, 03:06 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Dexter McCluster was waived Friday, Sept. 2, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Head coach Mike Mularky was all in on McCluster this summer, but the diminutive back still fell off the roster. McCluster was never as explosive as we hoped and it would have been very tough to find a role behind DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry, though, so his fantasy value was null anyway. He'll land somewhere, but as a special teams guy, nothing more.

Titans | Dexter McCluster should return    Thu Aug 11, 01:53 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Dexter McCluster did not participate in practice Thursday, Aug. 11, because of an excused absence but is expected to return to the team later in the day.

Footballguys view: So far down on the depth chart in the backfield at this point, this has minimal impact on fantasy rosters. This is Demarco Murray and Derrick Henry's show. If they split carries, Murray will be an RB3 with Henry as an RB4. But if Murray gets sole possession of the carries, he should be an RB2. McCluster isn't worth rostering.

Titans | Dexter McCluster will have opportunities    Tue Jun 14, 12:54 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Dexter McCluster thinks he'll have plenty of opportunities to make noise in the backfield even with RBs DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry ahead of him. 'I think it will open up a lot more opportunities for me,' said the 5-8, 170-pound McCluster. 'When you have some big guys that are going to run downhill, that can cause more confusion to a lot of people. I hope (defenses) forget all about me and I can get open.' McCluster has a versatile skill set and can also help on special teams returning punts.

Footballguys view: The 'exotic smashmouth' backfield of the Titans is going to feature plenty of Murray and Henry, but we're not sure how much will be left over for McCluster. He's not a fantasy-relevant player with his limited role.

Titans | Dexter McCluster should have role    Sun May 15, 04:37 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Dexter McCluster should have a role on offense in 2016 even though the team added RBs DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry this offseason, according to head coach Mike Mularkey.

Footballguys view: McCluster doesn't exactly fit their "exotic smashmouth" offense with Henry and Murray. However, if they use a change-of-pace back it should be McCluster. He may catch a few passes out of the backfield for the Titans, but we're not looking at him as a fantasy asset in 2016.

Updating a previous report, Tennessee Titans RB Dexter McCluster (wrist) is out for the rest of the season after breaking his wrist in Week 14, according to head coach Mike Mularkey.

Footballguys view: McCluster had a bit of value in PPR or return-yardage leagues...deep leagues only. From here on out, the team will turn to Bishop Sankey as their change-of-pace back. Good luck with that.

Titans | Dexter McCluster questionable to return    Thu Nov 19, 10:36 PM

Titans | Bishop Sankey doesn't play    Mon Nov 9, 10:32 AM

Tennessee Titans RB Bishop Sankey didn't play any offensive snaps Sunday, Nov. 8, in Week 9. RB Antonio Andrews played 45 snaps, and RB Dexter McCluster played 29 snaps.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners should have moved on from Sankey, as the team certainly will at some point. The Titans seem comfortable with Antonio Andrews as their top guy at running back. We'll see how rookie David Cobb gets worked into the mix when he returns from the IR/R list this week.

Titans | Bishop Sankey losing playing time    Sun Nov 1, 04:55 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Bishop Sankey did not get a carry for the second week in a row and fumbled a kickoff return during his team's 20-6 loss to the Houston Texans. He was replaced on returns by RB Dexter McCluster.

Footballguys view: Sankey has gone from anointed one in the Titans backfield to fighting for his spot on the roster once David Cobb is back. Teams are loathe to give up on second round picks after only two years, so Sankey should stick around with a new regime likely coming that could attempt to salvage his raw tools and talent.

Titans | Tennessee RBs do very little in loss    Sun Oct 11, 08:17 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Dexter McCluster rushed eight times for 20 yards in the Week 5 loss against the Buffalo Bills. RB Antonio Andrews rushed seven times for just nine yards, but he had a touchdown while added three catches for a team-high 45 yards. RB Bishop Sankey also ran seven times for 20 yards with three grabs for 23 yards.

Footballguys view: The Bills run defense is one of the tougher units to solve, and when you split that three ways, it's not going to be viable in fantasy leagues. This situation will only get muddier when David Cobb returns later this season.

Titans | Dexter McCluster sees heavy action    Mon Sep 21, 10:10 AM

Tennessee Titans RB Dexter McCluster led the running backs with 47 snaps (59% of the offense) Sunday, Sept. 20. RB Bishop Sankey played 32 snaps (40% of the offense.)

Footballguys view: The Titans have done everything they can short of running a Craigslist add to find running back production. Sankey and Terrence West have fallen out of favor, and McCluster is the one who produced on Sunday. Going forward, this is a situation that could be quite complicated until rookie David Cobb (calf) gets back from injury. Around the halfway point of the season, Cobb will be eligible to return, and he could be the team's starter.

Tennessee Titans RB Dexter McCluster carried 10 times for 98 yards in the Week 2 game against the Cleveland Browns, and he added four receptions for 26 yards.

Footballguys view: Don't rush out to pick up McCluster, as this will be the nature of the Titans backfield. He could be a useful what the heck flex in potential high scoring matchups like next week's against the Colts.

Tennessee Titans RB Dexter McCluster rushed for 37 yards on five carries and caught two passes for 20 yards during the preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, Aug. 28.

Footballguys view: McCluster is a forgotten man on the Titans roster, but he could work as a change-of-pace back behind Bishop Sankey. He's not fantasy relevant unless you play in a deep league.

Titans | Committee to be used in TEN?    Mon Aug 3, 04:37 PM

Tennessee Titans RBs Bishop Sankey and David Cobb could lead a running back by committee this season, according to ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky. RBs Antonio Andrews and Dexter McCluster would also be in the mix.

Footballguys view: We think the Titans would be best to start Cobb over Sankey, but hey at least a RBBC featuring both gets them close. Cobb is a powerful and efficient runner who can grind down a defense. With rookie fullback Jalston Fowler blasting open holes in front of him, it could make for a nice rushing attack. Fantasy owners should stay away from the Titans backfield until we get more clarity about the starter and the split.

Titans | Confidence high for Antonio Andrews    Mon Jun 22, 11:32 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Antonio Andrews feels confident he can crack the roster, and is shooting for a starting tailback job in training camp and the preseason. 'I am just going for a starting spot, whether it is Bishop Sankey, Dexter McCluster, David Cobb, Jalston Fowler or Connor Neighbors, I am just trying to be the No. 1 guy,' Andrews said.

Footballguys view: At 5'10" 225 pounds, Andrews is a swift runner who can blast through arm tackles. He's also an option as a return man. We like rookie David Cobb to eventually come through as the starter, but he'll have to beat out Bishop Sankey. The way Sankey looked last year, that might not be too difficult.

Titans | Dexter McCluster to be more involved?    Mon Dec 29, 02:32 PM

Tennessee Titans WR Dexter McCluster may be more involved in the offense next year, according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Footballguys view: Whisenhunt should have figured that out this year. The team added McCluster earlier this year in free agency, and they handed him a contract worth $9 million over three years. That price tag along should have meant a larger role on offense--especially for a team that is devoid of talent on that side of the ball. Even if McCluster is more involved, we don't see him being much of a fantasy factor in 2015.

Titans | Dexter McCluster to IR    Thu Dec 18, 02:58 PM

Tennessee Titans WR Dexter McCluster (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Thursday, Dec. 18.

Footballguys view: McCluster didn't do much with his new team. A free-agent signing by the Titans this year, McCluster did not fit in and finishes the year with 131 yards rushing, 197 yards receiving and one touchdown. His fantasy prospects--even in dynasty leagues--are low.
