Bills | AJ McCarron, Nathan Peterman on the field    Mon Aug 13, 12:33 PM

Buffalo Bills QB AJ McCarron (leg) and Nathan Peterman (arm) participated in practice Monday, Aug. 13, after both suffered minor injuries during practice Sunday, Aug. 12.

Footballguys view: They're trying to establish a depth chart order during the rest of training camp. McCarron worked with the first-team offense, while Peterman worked with the third-team offense.

Bills | Bills QBs banged up Sunday    Sun Aug 12, 06:22 PM

Buffalo Bills QB AJ McCarron (leg) appeared to have suffered a lower right leg injury during practice Sunday, Aug. 12, but was able to return. QB Nathan Peterman (arm) suffered an apparent right arm injury during practice.

Footballguys view: The path for Josh Allen to start Week 1 against the Ravens is opening, but that's probably a lot better for the Ravens fantasy defense than the Bills offense.

Bills | Buffalo not naming QB for preseason game    Tue Aug 7, 03:45 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman may both receive playing time with the first-team offense during the first preseason game, but head coach Sean McDermott said he is not ready to name the starting quarterback for the game.

Footballguys view: The Bills have rookie first-round pick Josh Allen as their quarterback of the future. He'll take over eventually, perhaps early this season but for now we'll continue to see McCarron and Peterman compete for that spot. The Bills passing game should be rough this year for Fantasy GMs, so we're looking forward to Allen playing but only in dynasty formats.

Bills | Nathan Peterman works with starters    Sat Aug 4, 10:15 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Nathan Peterman worked with the first-team offense Friday, Aug. 3, and head coach Sean McDermott said he has a set rotation between Peterman and QB AJ McCarron to ensure that both quarterbacks have plenty of first-team reps in the red zone.

Bills | AJ McCarron takes turn with backups    Sat Aug 4, 10:13 PM

Buffalo Bills QB AJ McCarron worked with the second-team offense Friday, Aug. 3, and head coach Sean McDermott said he plans to rotate first-team reps between McCarron and QB Nathan Peterman.

Footballguys view: The Bills quarterback job is completely up in the air, which is not a good look for a team with the weakest wide receiver corps in the league and three new starters on the offensive line.

Bills | AJ McCarron with first-team again    Thu Aug 2, 09:54 AM

Buffalo Bills QB AJ McCarron is working with the first-team offense for the second day in a row Thursday, Aug. 2. It's the first time any of the quarterbacks have worked with the first-team on consecutive days.

Footballguys view: There's almost as little information about what McCarron brings to the table as a starter as there is about Josh Allen. We just don't know what to expect. Add in a shaky pass-blocking line, very few reliable pass catchers and an offense which has thrown less pass attempts over the last few years than most teams while running more than almost anyone and we see a recipe for lackluster fantasy production. Stay away from the Bills quarterback position.

Bills | AJ McCarron too conservative    Sat Jul 28, 10:17 PM

Buffalo Bills QB AJ McCarron has been unwilling to take chances and has been holding the ball too long during training camp, according to Joe Buscaglia of WKBW.com, and Buscaglia believes McCarron could cost himself the starting job if he doesn't improve.

Footballguys view: McCarron isn't the quarterback of the future for the Bills (that's rookie Josh Allen), and he may not be the quarterback of the now if he doesn't show better in training camp. Outside of LeSean McCoy, Fantasy GMs aren't likely to get much production from other pieces of the Bills offense.

Bills | AJ McCarron gets chance with starters    Fri Jul 27, 04:09 PM

Buffalo Bills QB AJ McCarron worked with the first-team offense during practice Friday, July 27. QB Nathan Peterman worked with the starters Thursday, July 26.

Footballguys view: The Bills are going to have one of the worst quarterbacks in the league no matter who starts. Kelvin Benjamin and Charles Clay will get targets by default, but it's hard to believe that they can help make your draft behind a suspect offensive line with McCarron, Peterman, or rough around the edge first-round pick Josh Allen throwing them the ball.

Bills | Buffalo intrigued by AJ McCarron     Sun Jul 22, 10:46 PM

Buffalo Bills QB AJ McCarron carried the most intrigue of the free-agent quarterbacks that were available this offseason, according to general manager Brandon Beane, and Beane said he is looking forward to what McCarron is able to do during training camp.

Footballguys view: This sounds like some pre-training camp fluff but we'll monitor this quarterback competition. Earlier reports out of minicamp and OTAs indicated that McCarron was being outplayed by Nathan Peterman. Add in rookie first-round pick Josh Allen and you can see why this situation is a mess. Fantasy GMs are not going to look to the Bills passing attack for points in 2018.

Bills | Josh Allen to start with third-team offense    Wed Jul 18, 06:44 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen is slated to start with the third-team offense when the club begins training camp Thursday, July 26. That's 'the plan as of now, per head coach Sean McDermott,' while QBs AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman both play with the first-team offense.

Footballguys view: That's to be expected, not only because Allen is a rookie but because he primarily ran the third-team offense during OTAs and minicamp. Allen is the quarterback of the future, but if he wins the job for Week 1 of the regular season he's not going to be working with a great group of WRs...and the offensive line has been rebuilt...and who in the world knows what's going on in the LeSean McCoy situation. As you can see, we don't like Allen in redraft leagues but still appreciate his skill set in dynasty formats.

Bills | Josh Allen in mix to start Week 1    Sun Jun 17, 01:55 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen has 'mesmerized fans with his big arm in practice' and, although he'll start the preseason third on the depth chart behind AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman, he also 'has a real chance to be the Week 1 starter,' according to Ben Volin of The Boston Globe.

Footballguys view: Allen is the quarterback of the future, and that's why the Bills moved up to select him in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. He's got a big arm, but his college days at Wyoming were marred by poor accuracy. As a 56 percent passer for the Cowboys, Allen's main thing he needs to improve is his play under pressure. Too often Allen would feel the rush, then launch the ball off his back foot to his first/quickest read...and that led to some wayward passes. His arm is damn near superhuman, but Allen needs to continue picking up the nuances of the game in order to play up to his tremendous potential.

Bills | Two QBs splitting Bills' reps    Thu May 24, 11:10 AM

Buffalo Bills QBs AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman are splitting repetitions with the first-team offense, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

Footballguys view: McCarron was signed to be a 'bridge' quarterback for the Bills. He's wanted to be a starter for some time, but McCarron just sat behind Andy Dalton with the Bengals. Peterman was turnover prone (that's being nice) for the Bills last year as a rookie, and he shouldn't be much of a threat for the starting job. We all know that Josh Allen, 2018 first-round pick out of Wyoming, is set to be the quarterback of the future when he develops.

Bills | Bills starting QB gig to be determined    Wed Apr 4, 11:55 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman will take part in an 'open competition' for the role of starting quarterback, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

Footballguys view: It's hard to imagine Peterman winning this battle, but we have little idea what AJ McCarron can really do. And, of course, there is the issue of whether the Bills draft a quarterback.

Bills | AJ McCarron goes to Buffalo    Wed Mar 14, 07:25 PM

The Buffalo Bills and free-agent QB AJ McCarron agreed to terms on a two-year deal Wednesday, March 14. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: McCarron is a bit of an unknown as a starter, and he was known as a weak-armed game manager in college at Alabama. He may get a chance to start with the Bills since they traded Tyrod Taylor (Browns) away. However, we think the Bills will still be aggressive in seeking a quarterback with a premium pick in the 2018 NFL draft.

Broncos | AJ McCarron a target for Broncos?    Mon Mar 12, 03:43 PM

Free-agent QB AJ McCarron is a potential target for the Denver Broncos during free agency, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. McCarron played for the Bengals when Broncos head coach Vance Joseph was Cincinnati's defensive backs coach.

Footballguys view: McCarron has been on the Broncos radar before. He shouldn't be seen as any sort of long-term answer, and the Broncos should still take a QB at no5 overall in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft.

Browns | HC still wants to bring in AJ McCarron    Tue Mar 6, 01:57 AM

The Cleveland Browns are 'still exceedingly interested' in signing Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent QB AJ McCarron. Head coach Hue Jackson, who was McCarron's former offensive coordinator in Cincinnati, prefers bringing him in 'and then backstopping him' with a rookie quarterback in the draft.

Footballguys view: As we've been hearing a lot, which could make that first pick -- and even the fourth, which Cleveland also has -- fascinating. It could free them up to grab Saquon Barkley and then come back around either for a quarterback or a player like a Bradley Chubb or Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Bengals | AJ McCarron a game manager?    Sun Feb 18, 10:12 PM

Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent QB AJ McCarron's 'ceiling is that of a solid game manager,' according to a scout.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Nobody should be going nuts over the potential of McCarron, but in this QB-desperate league he's going to get paid a handsome salary to get a chance to be a starter.

Bengals | AJ McCarron in line for big contract?    Sun Feb 18, 09:41 PM

Vikings | Minnesota may look at AJ McCarron    Sun Feb 18, 12:36 PM

Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent QB AJ McCarron is expected to receive interest from the Minnesota Vikings if the Vikings are not able to re-sign impending free-agent QB Case Keenum.

Footballguys view: McCarron's entry into the free agent market could change the plans for multiple teams out there. A fifth-round pick out of Alabama in 2014, McCarron is known as a game-manager type of quarterback. He can work well within a system but struggles to improvise when a play breaks down. In this QB desperate league however, McCarron is set to get an offer similar to what Mike Glennon (3-year, $45 million, $18.5 million guaranteed) got from the Bears in 2017.

Bengals | AJ McCarron will be a UFA    Thu Feb 15, 05:04 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron has won his grievance and will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, according to a source.

Footballguys view: So far Cleveland is the hot destination rumor. It would certainly change a lot of things in the top portion of the draft if the Browns got their quarterback before round one kicks off. Even if McCarron is unproven, we hear at least Hue Jackson is a big fan.

Bengals | AJ McCarron changing teams?    Sun Feb 11, 10:05 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron could end up with another team in 2018, even if he loses his grievance and remains a restricted free agent, according to Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com. Even with a tender placed on him, Terrell believes a quarterback-needy team will pursue McCarron.

Footballguys view: Teams in need of a quarterback are going to have different options. For some team looking for a cheaper option than Kirk Cousins, we could see McCarron instead. The Broncos were rumored to be interested in him last year, and they may be in play for McCarron once again regardless of his free agency status.

Bengals | AJ McCarron to have arbitration case    Sun Dec 10, 10:10 AM

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron is scheduled to have an arbitration case in February to determine if he will be a restricted free agent or an unrestricted free agent this offseason, according to sources.

Footballguys view: If he's an unrestricted free agent, a Mike Glennon-esque contract with short term starter money is likely, maybe even in Cleveland as a bridge to their likely first-round pick with Hue Jackson's affinity for McCarron and the likelihood that Jackson remains the head coach.

Broncos | AJ McCarron not a Broncos target    Wed Aug 9, 10:11 AM

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron is not a trade target of the Denver Broncos, according to sources.

Footballguys view: That the Broncos have to answer these questions shows that their quarterback situation isn't settled.   Browns | Cleveland turning focus to AJ McCarron?    Fri Apr 28, 02:54 PM

The Cleveland Browns have 'touched base' with the Cincinnati Bengals in regards to trading for QB AJ McCarron, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, who acknowledged talks do not 'sound like they've gotten too far'.

Footballguys view: Sounds like maybe the Browns aren't super confident in Brock Osweiler after all. They'll keep kicking tires, but we have no idea how good McCarron will be so they can't be interested in giving up much for him.

Bengals | AJ McCarron unlikely to be dealt    Tue Apr 25, 09:10 AM

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron is unlikely to be traded because it would likely take a first-round pick to acquire him.

Browns | Cleveland looking at AJ McCarron    Fri Apr 7, 03:48 AM

The Cleveland Browns remain interested in Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron, who previously worked with Browns coach Hue Jackson in Cincinnati. McCarron has asked to be traded.

Footballguys view: The Bengals don't seem to be intent on getting rid of McCarron. He may just have to wait until he hits the open market as an unrestricted free agent in 2018. The Browns want to find a new starting quarterback, and they'll have several options with potential trades (McCarron, Jimmy Garoppolo) or the 2017 NFL draft.

The New York Jets would 'consider' a trade of DE Sheldon Richardson to the Cincinnati Bengals for QB AJ McCarron, according to ESPN.com's Rich Cimini.

Bengals | AJ McCarron available for a price    Thu Mar 2, 09:34 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron could be traded for the right offer, and the Bengals are likely seeking at least a second-round pick for McCarron, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: After playing coy - and thereby setting the bait - the Bengals now feed the line into the water and see who is biting. There's not much in free agency, and Jimmy Garoppolo will be more expensive so we can see there being interest. However, he didn't show a ton in seven games during the 2016 season and is as unproven as the rookies coming in. We don't think the Bengals are going to land a big fish this offseason.

Footballguys view: Another team not trading a backup quarterback. McCarron may want to be traded away, but he's going to have to wait until 2018 when he becomes a restricted free agent.

Bengals | AJ McCarron the best QB trade target?    Sat Feb 18, 10:30 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron is a better trade target than New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo, according to one NFL executive. 'If I had to choose one, I would go after McCarron,' the executive said. 'Ideally, you get him for a late second- or early third-round pick.

Footballguys view: A fifth-round pick in 2014, McCarron has been patiently waiting and developing behind starter Andy Dalton. In seven appearances (all in 2015), McCarron has six touchdowns and only two interceptions. He worked in a pro style offense during his college career at Alabama, and he's known as a cocky Alpha male who can be a fiery leader. McCarron does struggle with pressure, but when settled down he's not afraid to make tough throws.

Bengals | AJ McCarron will be RFA    Thu Feb 9, 11:24 AM

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron will be a restricted free agent in 2018 because he didn't accrue enough active games to count toward free agency.

Footballguys view: This is good for the Bengals, as they can flip him for picks if they are so moved. If he was an unrestricted free agent, they wouldn't get as much for him. McCarron has been mentioned in terms of teams looking for a quarterback, but we have no track record to know how good he really is.

Bengals | AJ McCarron trade inevitable?    Sun Jan 8, 09:40 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron is expected to be traded during the offseason, according to beat writer Paul Dehner Jr. Dehner said it's a matter of when and who will give up the most in the trade.

Footballguys view: McCarron thinks he'll be traded, but it's not that simple. According to Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, McCarron didn't have any suitors last offseason and he doesn't think that changes this year. McCarron is seen as a starter-in-waiting, but he's only going to backup Andy Dalton in Cincinnati. If the Bengals don't trade him, McCarron will have to wait to hit free agency.

Bengals | No suitors for AJ McCarron?    Wed Jan 4, 11:32 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron wasn't the target of trade offers last year, according to head coach Marvin Lewis, and Lewis said he doesn't expect the situation to change this offseason. 'His market was better a year ago and no one inquired,' Lewis said.

Footballguys view: That's a truth for many backup quarterbacks out there. McCarron is a name some like to throw around as a potential starter, but if that was the case then some team would make a move. It's not a QB-driven league, it's a QB-desperate league and teams will look anywhere to find that starting passer. McCarron felt he would be traded this offseason, but that may not be the case. He's likely to have to wait it out and hit the open market when his rookie contract is up.

Bengals | Cincy planning to use AJ McCarron    Tue Jan 5, 12:09 PM

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said Monday, Jan. 4, that the Bengals would prepare during the week as if QB AJ McCarron would start the wild card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday, Jan. 9, with QB Andy Dalton's (thumb) status up in the air. McCarron said he'll be more confident this weekend if he's forced to face the Steelers for the second time.

Footballguys view: Confidence isn't McCarron's problem, but staying cool under pressure is. McCarron will take chances with the football, and that can pay off for the Bengals since they have elite weapons like WR A.J. Green and TE Tyler Eifert. However, in a game that has 'shootout' written all over it, we'll take Ben Roethlisberger over what McCarron can bring to the table.
