  Patriots | Drafting a QB a 'priority'    Sun Mar 24, 04:10 PM

The New England Patriots drafting a quarterback in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft is 'the priority,' but all options are on the table with the No. 3 pick, head coach Jerod Mayo said on Sunday, March 24.

Patriots | Jerod Mayo taking over as head coach    Fri Jan 12, 08:58 AM

New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo was named head coach Friday, Jan. 12.

Footballguys view: As most expected, Mayo takes over for Bill Belichick. With language in his contract, Mayo gets to move up the ranks without the Patriots interviewing any other candidates. Now, the team will find a new general manager to work with Mayo. With the no3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, expect the Patriots to be in the market for a quarterback like Caleb Williams (USC), Drake Maye (North Carolina), or Jayden Daniels (LSU).

Browns | Jerod Mayo unlikely to leave New England    Fri Jan 13, 01:15 PM

New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo recently informed the Cleveland Browns he will not interview with the team for its defensive coordinator vacancy.

Footballguys view: Mayo may not leave the Patriots for a defensive coordinator job, but he's also getting some looks as a head coach. The Patriots are working on extending Mayo's contract as they said in a press release on Thursday.

New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo is receiving interest from the Carolina Panthers regarding their head coaching position, and the Panthers have requested permission to interview Mayo, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Panthers and the Browns have interest in Mayo, although in Cleveland it's for their open defensive coordinator position. Mayo has been in the mix for a year or so, and the Panthers may decide to give him a chance as their head coach.

Raiders | Jerod Mayo interviewing with Vegas    Mon Jan 24, 10:14 AM

New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo will interview for the Las Vegas Raiders' head coaching vacancy Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Footballguys view: Rumblings have indicated that Mayo is going to leave for a head coaching job or he's not leaving the Patriots. As the linebackers coach, some felt Mayo would leave for a defensive coordinator position but that's not the case. The Raiders had interim head coach Rich Bisaccia lead them to the postseason, but they are going to make a full coaching search before making a decision.

Broncos | Jerod Mayo drawing interest from Denver    Mon Jan 10, 01:42 PM

New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo has reportedly been requested to interview for the Denver Broncos' head coaching vacancy, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have had two defensive minded coaches in a row (Vance Joseph, Vic Fangio) and they have failed spectacularly. However, that's not making them shy away from other defensive minded coaches now that Fangio was fired on Sunday.

Patriots | Jerod Mayo retiring    Wed Feb 17, 12:19 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo is retiring, his agent, Sean Kiernan, confirmed. Mayo bid farewell to the team and his fans on Instagram Tuesday, Feb. 16. Mayo had an $11.4 million salary cap number this year, so he was unlikely to be retained by the team anyway. He was also due a $4 million roster bonus next month.

Footballguys view: Mayo had a litany of injuries over the course of his career and actually got back to a reasonable level after a patellar tendon tear, which is not easy or automatic, but it became too much to overcome. He was contributing as recently as Week 17, but Mayo doesn't appear to be interested to trying to catch on with another team for a lot less money and smaller role. More players may take this route with better awareness of the price of football on the body in life after football.

Patriots | Jerod Mayo undergoes surgery    Wed Jan 27, 12:27 AM

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (pectoral) underwent surgery Tuesday, Jan. 26, to repair a torn pectoral muscle, a source said. He is expected to be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Mayo's body isn't holding up. He's now ended three of the last four season on Injured Reserve with a major injury. Mayo is entering free agency in 2016, and there may not be many teams lined up to add the injury-prone veteran linebacker.

Patriots | Jerod Mayo going to IR    Tue Jan 19, 04:50 PM

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (shoulder) is being placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Jan. 19, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Losing Mayo isn't a huge loss for the Patriots defense, and he might have played his final snaps with the team. According to Spotrac.com, in 2016 Mayo will earn a base salary of $3.25 million, a roster bonus of $4.5 million and a workout bonus of $250,000. Mayo has a cap hit of $11.4 million while his dead money value is $4.4 million. We can't see any way the Patriots pick up his option for 2016 and beyond.

Patriots | Jerod Mayo exits    Sat Jan 16, 06:55 PM

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (shoulder) exited the divisional game Saturday, Jan. 16, with a shoulder injury, and he's questionable to return.

Footballguys view: No word about the severity of Mayo's injury. The Patriots won, so they'll be playing in the AFC Championship Game next weekend. If the Broncos win, the Patriots travel to Denver. If the Steelers win, then the Patriots will be the host.

Patriots | Jerod Mayo not fully healthy    Sun Jun 21, 10:05 AM

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (knee) did not participate in offseason workouts and still is not 100% from the torn patellar tendon he suffered last season.

Footballguys view: Mayo suffered the injury back in October, ending his season for the second year in a row (in Week 6) prematurely. He took a massive pay cut to stay with the team earlier this offseason, and the timetable for his actual return is unknown. There's a chance he could begin training camp on the PUP list.

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo was drafted in the top 10 of the NFL Draft in 2008, making him one of just two players drafted in the top 10 in head coach Bill Belichick's 15 seasons with the team.

Footballguys view: Yes. A history lesson here....and that's about it. The Patriots are usually drafting at the end...or near the end...of the first round because they play deep into the playoffs most seasons.

The New England Patriots placed RB Stevan Ridley (knee) and LB Jerod Mayo (knee) on Reserve/Injured and promoted OG Chris Barker to the active roster Thursday, Oct. 16.

Footballguys view: This makes Shane Vereen more attractive Thursday and he should be a decent RB2, with a little upside in PPR leagues. The Jets always play the Pats tough, so there is also an element of risk, but as bad as New York has looked, Vereen should be in for a great night.

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (pectoral) and DT Tommy Kelly (knee) are both likely to be ready for training camp in the opinion of Field Yates of ESPN Boston.

Footballguys view: The injuries on the defensive side of the ball were almost as bad as those on the offensive side, just less well covered by the media at large because Tom Brady wasn't involved. Mayo and Kelly coming back will be a big help.

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (pectoral) was placed on Injured Reserve.

Footballguys view: It's going to be tough to replace a player who led the team in tackles the last five years. Rookie Jamie Collins will take over at weak-side linebacker with Mayo out. Collins is a tall, lean linebacker/end hybrid from Southern Miss who racked up 20 tackles for loss and 10 sacks last season. He has the size and athleticism to make plays in space.

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (pectoral) underwent surgery to fix a torn pectoral muscle Tuesday, Oct. 15, and he could be out for the rest of the season. Mayo leads the team with 55 total tackles and has 35 solo tackles this year.

Footballguys view: It's another blow to a Patriots defense that is already playing without Vince Wilfork. Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower, who has mostly played the strongside linebacker position, could be asked to become the defensive captain with Mayo (pectoral) likely lost for the season. Jamie Collins and Dane Fletcher are other options, since Hightower sometimes comes out of the game in sub packages.
