NFL | Laurence Maroney hopes to sign with team    Wed Aug 31, 03:02 PM

Free-agent RB Laurence Maroney (Broncos) is looking to sign with a new team after being acquitted of a misdemeanor marijuana charge in St. Louis. Maroney's attorney said Maroney has two workouts set up but would not disclosed which teams.

Footballguys view: Maroney looked terrible last year as a member of the Denver Broncos. We can't imagine any team being hot and heavy to sign him.

NFL | Laurence Maroney's career in jeopardy?    Mon Apr 4, 11:28 AM

Free-agent RB Laurence Maroney (Broncos) could have trouble making a roster this upcoming season, according to Mike Reiss, of ESPNBoston.com. Maroney is coming off a poor 2010 season, in addition to being charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession last week.

Footballguys view: Maroney has never played up to his potential, and with so many good running backs in this year's draft we believe it will be difficult for him to find a spot on a roster.

Broncos | Laurence Maroney charged with pot possession    Fri Apr 1, 10:09 AM

Prosecutors have charged free-agent RB Laurence Maroney (Broncos) with one count of marijuana possession - for the arrest back in January when St. Louis police pulled over a car and busted Maroney and four other people, according to TMZ.com. Police originally booked Maroney for possession of a firearm, but it was later determined he had a permit to carry the gun. Maroney faces up to one year in prison and a $1,000 fine.

Footballguys view: The Broncos don't currently have a fourth-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft because Josh McDaniels had to trade for Maroney last year. Another terrible deal from the team's former head coach.

Broncos | Laurence Maroney not coming back    Thu Mar 3, 02:39 PM

The Denver Broncos did not tender an offer to RB Laurence Maroney, making him a free agent, according to The Denver Post.

Footballguys view: One of Josh McDaniels many blunders was bringing in Maroney and giving up a fourth-round pick to the Patriots. No surprise that he's not going back to the Broncos.

Broncos | Not expected to bring back Laurence Maroney    Mon Feb 21, 05:52 PM

The Denver Broncos are not expected to re-sign impending free-agent RB Laurence Maroney this offseason, reports CBSSports.com.

Footballguys view: The Broncos wasted a 2011 fourth-round pick when they traded for Maroney from the Patriots. He'll have to earn a roster spot on another team as the Broncos want a younger/better RB corps.

Denver Broncos RB Correll Buckhalter is expected to start in Week 3, in place of injured RB Knowshon Moreno (hamstring), reports Mike Klis, of The Denver Post. Buckhalter is expected to rotate with RB Laurence Maroney during the game.

Broncos | Laurence Maroney excited for fresh start    Fri Sep 17, 10:54 PM

Denver Broncos RB Laurence Maroney said he is excited to have a fresh start with Denver, reports Christopher Price, of WEEI.com. He said he understood the criticism he received while with the New England Patriots, noting a lot of it came because he was a first-round draft choice. He said it is too early to tell exactly what role he will play with the Broncos.

Footballguys view: Maroney said in an interview that he wasn't in Denver to take anybody's job, but he just wanted to fit in and help the team win football games. The Broncos added Maroney as veteran insurance because Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter have both been bothered by injuries this year.

Denver Broncos RB Laurence Maroney (thigh) did not practice Thursday, Sept. 16, reports Danny O'Neil, of The Seattle Times.

Broncos | Laurence Maroney brings experienced depth    Thu Sep 16, 01:31 PM

Denver Broncos RB Laurence Maroney was added as depth to the running back position behind RBs Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter, reports The Associated Press. Maroney, when healthy, should be able to step right in because he knows the team's offensive system, which is very similar to that of the New England Patriots. Head coach Josh McDaniels said the team is at the point where another injury or two to their top backs would leave them incredibly thin with experienced depth at the position. 'It's not that we don't have players, we just don't have a lot of players behind them that have played football in the NFL,' McDaniels said. McDaniels also was not happy with the running game production during Week 1, as he feels the team left a lot of yards on the field.

Footballguys view: Laurence Maroney has the talent to be a full time back for the Broncos if injuries strike the depth chart in front of him. He knows the system and will have a very short learning curve.

Broncos | Laurence Maroney could receive contract extension    Thu Sep 16, 11:41 AM

The Denver Broncos would be willing to award a contract extension to RB Laurence Maroney if he works out well for the team this season, according to Mike Klis, of The Denver Post. Maroney will be a free agent following the 2010 season. 'Certainly we would love to have an opportunity to keep a young player at that position around for more than a year,' head coach Josh McDaniels said. 'I think that would be the goal for sure - to give us some guys that really have an opportunity to be here for a long time.'

Footballguys view: Maroney knows the system in Denver because it's very similar to the one used in New England and should have no trouble adapting to his new home. He still has a lot of potential, but needed a fresh start after wearing out his welcome in New England. We'll see if the promise of a new pay day will motivate Maroney to produce at a high level when he's on the field.

Patriots | Laurence Maroney felt betrayed by trade    Thu Sep 16, 09:36 AM

New England Patriots RB Kevin Faulk said RB Laurence Maroney was upset with his trade to the Denver Broncos, according to Robert Lee, of The Providence Journal. Maroney felt betrayed by the team. 'Just think about it. Put yourself in his shoes. If you go to work and your boss tells you that you've been traded or let go, that's a little confusing, but at the same time it's life,' Faulk said. 'You've got to move on. He was a little confused, but at the same time he knew he had a fresh start and he's going somewhere where he's familiar with the offense. He's familiar with the some of the coaches. So it's a good situation for him.'

Footballguys view: Maroney needed a change of scenery as his career had gotten off track in New England. We'll see if he uses this feeling of betrayal as motivation now that he's with the Denver Broncos. Maroney is very talented but has never lived up to his potential in the pros.

The Denver Broncos have acquired RB Laurence Maroney from the New England Patriots, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter. It is not yet known what the Broncos gave up for Maroney.

New England Patriots RB Laurence Maroney finally saw extended playing time Thursday, Sept. 2, during the team's preseason finale. Working with the backup offense, Maroney rushed nine times for a team-high 32 yards.

Footballguys view: If Maroney is going to play a big role in the Pats backfield, we haven't seen evidence of it yet. Don't draft him, but be ready to pounce on the waiver wire when Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris begin to look their age.

Patriots | Believe Laurence Maroney can contribute    Fri Aug 27, 05:41 PM

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said he believes RB Laurence Maroney can absolutely help the team out this season, according to Mike Reiss, of ESPNBoston.com.

Footballguys view: Why wasn't Maroney on the field as the starter last night? That is the big mystery surrounding the Patriots backfield. Maroney is arguably the most talented back on New England's roster but seems to be in Belichick's doghouse.

Patriots | Laurence Maroney may still be in dog house    Fri Aug 27, 02:11 AM

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots RB Laurence Maroney ended last year in the dog house of the coaching staff and it appears he never worked his way out of it because he hasn't sniffed the field since he worked with the backups during the first preseason game, reports Jeff Howe, of NESN.com. Maroney also has not missed any practice time, so there is no reason to think he is being held out due to health reasons. Howe believes the only way to look at the situation is that Maroney's stock with the team has plummeted, and his chances of making the team are slimmer than ever.

Footballguys view: Maroney was supposed to start in the all important third preseason game, but found himself languishing on the bench instead. Teams may be interested in trading for Maroney if he is actually on the trading block, but the possibility remains the Patriots could just outright cut him.

Patriots | Where is Laurence Maroney?    Fri Aug 27, 02:09 AM

New England Patriots RB Laurence Maroney, for the second consecutive week, did not touch the football Thursday, Aug. 26, reports Tom E. Curran, of CSNNE.com. Head coach Bill Belichick's explanation for never giving the ball to Maroney was the team never had the football. The Patriots ran 36 plays, including 11 rushing attempts. Maroney is expected to play in the fourth preseason game, which seems to be an unconventional way to prepare him for the regular season.

Footballguys view: We have no definitive reason for Maroney's absence, but one thing's for sure, it can't be a good sign. Staying away from the Patriot backfield is probably the best course of action in fantasy drafts right now.

Patriots | Laurence Maroney planning to run harder    Sun Aug 8, 09:08 PM

New England Patriots RB Laurence Maroney is planning to run harder in 2010, reports Howard Ulman, of The Associated Press. Maroney said, That's how I've got to be on the field. Rough. I can't go out there being all pretty because then you're all going to say I'm dancing.

Footballguys view: Maroney could very well be the lead back for the Patriots this year, but they will still use some form of RBBC. Kevin Faulk will still be used as a receiver out of the backfield, and the team may decide to use guys like Fred Taylor or Sammy Morris in a supplemental role to help keep Maroney fresh.

Footballguys view: If healthy Maroney should be the lead back for the Patriots. However, we expect them to use some form of RBBC once again this year. Veteran Kevin Faulk will continue his role as a change of pace back and receiver out of the backfield, while Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris could see some time as short yardage and goalline runners.

Patriots | Laurence Maroney looking to avoid being lazy with football    Fri Jul 30, 04:23 AM

New England Patriots RB Laurence Maroney isn't passing blame for his fumble problems last year, reports Monique Walker, of The Boston Globe. Maroney said it was simply him being lazy.   Patriots | Laurence Maroney likely to stick     Mon Jul 26, 04:01 PM

There is some thought New England Patriots RB Laurence Maroney won't make it out of training camp as part of the team, reports Tom E. Curran, of Comcast SportsNet. However, that seams unlikely because the Patriots don't have a lot of other options to turn to and the Patriots may have to turn toward him as their top back again. Maroney said he will be better in 2010, but only time will tell. Last year he had problems holding onto the football, and lost four fumbles against top-tier opponents at key times.

Patriots | Rushing statistics misleading    Mon Jul 26, 03:58 PM

The New England Patriots rushed for 1,921 yards and 19 touchdowns last year, while averaging 4.1 yards per carry as a team, reports Tom E. Curran, of Comcast SportsNet. However, while the numbers look good on paper, the running attack for the patriots is explosive, young or healthy. The quartet of Laurence Maroney, Kevin Faulk, Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris provide more yawns than fear entering the year and the Patriots didn't address the position during the offseason.

Footballguys view: The Patriots will be able to use any combination of runners (let's throw BenJarvus Green-Ellis on the list too) to get a productive running game in 2010. Maroney has a shot to be the feature back, but has failed to live up to expectations. Morris and Taylor are valuable veterans who need to stay healthy, and Green-Ellis has an intriguing blend of power and speed.
