Falcons | Marcus Mariota goes under the knife Mon Dec 26, 01:26 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota (knee) recently underwent surgery on his injured knee, according to head coach Arthur Smith.
Footballguys view: Mariota's season was cut short by this knee injury, and even though he's under contract with the Falcons next year we'll likely see him released. He has a cap hit of $14.5 million in 2023, but there's only $2.5 million remaining in dead money. Some team will likely want Mariota as a valuable veteran backup next season. |

Falcons | Marcus Mariota out for season Wed Dec 14, 12:11 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota (knee) will have surgery next week and miss the rest of the season.
Footballguys view: Mariota's first season with the Falcons ended with 2,219 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He rushed 85 times for 438 yards and four rushing touchdowns as well. Mariota has a $14.5 million cap hit in 2023, but there's only $2.5 million remaining in dead money. We could easily see the Falcons move on from Mariota, and he may not be ready for the start of the 2023 season wherever he lands. |

Falcons | Marcus Mariota expected to land on IR Mon Dec 12, 02:42 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota (knee) is expected to be placed on the Reserve/Injured list in the near future, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Falcons made the move to rookie QB Desmond Ridder as their starter during the bye week. Ridder is going to start in Week 15 against the Saints, and Mariota seems bound for Injured Reserve. He's under contract for next season, but the Falcons could move on from Mariota and only suffer a $2.5 million cap hit. They need to see if Ridder can flash the potential needed to be a starter in this league. If Ridder struggles, the Falcons should be in the quarterback market next offseason. |

Falcons | Desmond Ridder to take over as starter? Wed Dec 7, 10:08 PM

Falcons | Marcus Mariota tosses TD in Week 12 Sun Nov 27, 04:03 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota completed 15-of-25 passes for 174 yards, one touchdown and one interception while running for 49 yards in Week 12 against the Washington Commanders.
Footballguys view: Mariota had a chance to throw a game-winning touchdown, but Daron Payne batted the ball in the air and Kendall Fuller intercepted it late in the fourth quarter. The Falcons are still only a half game out of first place, so Mariota should remain the starter for the foreseeable future. |

Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota completed 13-of-20 passes for 131 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Week 11 against the Chicago Bears while adding 13 rushes for 25 yards and a score.
Footballguys view: Mariota was a fantasy success even though the Falcons passing game is one of the most conservative in the league. The Bears defense has been generous to the opposition in recent weeks. We'll see if Zach Wilson can take advantage next week. |

Falcons | Marcus Mariota doesn't do much Sun Nov 6, 04:36 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota completed 12-of-23 passes for just 129 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions while running for 24 yards on five attempts in Week 9 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Footballguys view: Mariota missed a wide open Kyle Pitts downfield or he could have at least avoided being a bust for fantasy in this one. He hadn't had a floor game in a while, but with both touchdowns coming on the ground, his passing and rushing contributions weren't enough. On Thursday, Mariota will face a Panthers defense that he had on the ropes two weeks ago. |

Falcons | Marcus Mariota tosses three TDs Sun Oct 30, 06:10 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota completed 20-of-28 passes for 253 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 8 against the Carolina Panthers while adding 43 rushing yards on six attempts.
Footballguys view: Mariota had a bad overtime interception, but was redeemed by a missed Eddy Pineiro kick, and then led a game-winning drive that put the Falcons in first place all by themselves. Mariota had his first good passing day of the season and put himself back in streamer and bye week coverage consideration against the Chargers next week. |

Falcons | Marcus Mariota throws for only 124 yards Sun Oct 23, 04:21 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota went 8-for-13 for 124 yards and one touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7. He also rushed for 31 yards on six carries during the game.
Footballguys view: Mariota connected on a 75-yard score to Damiere Byrd, but otherwise was rarely sen throwing the ball even though the Falcons trailed big for most of the game. Mariota continues to be an acceptable fantasy starter and he has been good enough to have his team tied for first going into a divisional showdown with the suddenly alive Panthers. |

Falcons | Marcus Mariota leads team in rushing Sun Oct 9, 06:12 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota completed 14-of-25 passes for just 147 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Week 5 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he managed seven runs for a game-high 61 yards.
Footballguys view: Mariota had a decent fantasy day in the unsuccessful comeback effort, but it was the kind of passing performance that makes you wonder when Desmond Ridder is going to get a chance to start. Mariota will absorb more punishment next week against the fierce 49ers defense. |

Falcons | Marcus Mariota does very little Sun Oct 2, 04:26 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota completed just 7-of-19 passes for 139 yards, no touchdowns and one interception while adding five runs for only three yards in Week 4 against the Cleveland Browns.
Footballguys view: The Falcons running game carried the team today. The defense is game enough to keep them competitive in most games, so this is a bad sign for Mariota's value. His performance was bad enough to get us closer to Desmond Ridder starting even though the Falcons won. |

Falcons | Marcus Mariota has clear lead for QB job Thu Jun 30, 05:07 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota appears to have a big advantage over QB Desmond Ridder for the starting quarterback job entering training camp, according to ESPN.com's Michael Rothstein.
Footballguys view: This year's crop of rookie quarterbacks all seem far away from starting, at least as of right now. That's good news for the Falcons, Steelers, and Titans passing games, but just a little better than if they were starting a green rookie. Don't expect a lot of overachievers to come out of these offenses. Mariota has some intrigue in superflex as he was a good and productive quarterback the one time we saw him start for the Raiders. |

Falcons | Marcus Mariota 'far ahead' of Desmond Ridder Thu Jun 30, 11:04 AM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota is 'far ahead' of rookie Desmond Ridder entering training camp, in the opinion of ESPN's Michael Rothstein. 'Mariota appears to be far ahead of Ridder right now, and Atlanta brought Mariota in for a reason -- to be the starter at least in the short term because he has familiarity with what coach Arthur Smith wants in the offense. Plus, Mariota has looked sharp through OTAs,' said Rothstein.
Footballguys view: There are some out there who think the rookie Ridder can push for the starting job in training camp. Well, anything is possible but most reports indicate Mariota is far enough ahead to begin the regular season as the starter. Now, could Ridder take over if/when Mariota struggles? Sure. We'll watch this situation, but the Falcons quarterback job is not one Fantasy GMs should be investing in this season. |

Falcons | Rookie QB Ridder Making it a Competition Wed Jun 22, 04:01 PM
Josh Kendall, from The Athletic, reports Atlanta Falcons rookie QB Desmond Ridder is going to make a competition at the position during training camp.
Footballguys view: The Falcons picked up Ridder in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft. During his college career at Cincinnati, Ridder showed all the tools needed for success in the modern league. Marcus Mariota is there as the veteran and projected starter, but Ridder has talent and is known as a leader. He could push for the starting job sooner than some think. Let's watch this battle unfold in camp. |

Falcons | Marcus Mariota to run more? Sat Jun 4, 10:18 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota's mobility will be utilized in the offense, according to quarterbacks coach Charles London. 'I think we'd be crazy if we didn't try to roll these guys out of the pocket a little bit,' London said.
Footballguys view: Mariota can pull down the ball and attack a defense with his legs, so the Falcons offense will use that to their advantage. Not only can Mariota do that, but 2022 third-round pick QB Desmond Ridder is an athletic quarterback. If Ridder is being groomed to be an eventual starter in this offense it would make sense to get him on the run too. |

Falcons | Big WRs Make QB Mariota Look Good Sun May 29, 01:17 PM
Josh Alper, from Pro Football Talk, reports Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota believes the big-bodied WRs they have around him help to make him look better. "With those guys in there, they make you look good," Mariota said, via the team's website. "You don't always have to be perfect with your throws. Being able to have these guys whether it be their catch radius, whether it's their ability to get in and out of cuts, the receivers have really made all of us quarterbacks look good this offseason."
Footballguys view: The Falcons made a strong statement when they selected USC WR Drake London in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft - the first wide receiver off the board. London is a huge target who reminds some in the scouting community of Mike Evans (Buccaneers). Add in free agent addition WR Auden Tate and the trade for former Raiders WR Bryan Edwards, and you can see the tall options Mariota has to throw to. Mariota is looking more like a bridge QB than any sort of long-term answer, but he's going to do his best to rejuvenate his career with his opportunity in Atlanta. |

Falcons | Marcus Mariota 'hungry' to start again Sat May 28, 01:44 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota says he's 'hungry to get back on the field again' after being a backup the past two seasons. 'For me personally, the last couple of years was a learning opportunity,' Mariota said on Thursday, May 26. 'Previously when I was at Tennessee I had an opportunity to play. I was a starter. Being around that and then going and learning for a couple of years, I'm kind of hungry to get back on the field again.'
Footballguys view: Mariota is more of a bridge starter to the next quarterback for the Falcons (not yet on the roster) than he is a long-term solution. We'll see how he plays under Smith again, since he knows the system from their days together in Tennessee (where Mariota was benched for Ryan Tannehill). Mariota's contract with the Falcons is "effectively" a one-year, $6.75 million deal with a $12 million option in 2023. |

Falcons | Marcus Mariota tops the depth chart Wed May 18, 12:09 PM
Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota is at the top of the quarterback depth chart ahead of the 2022 season, head coach Arthur Smith said recently. 'We've added competition certainly,' Smith said. 'Marcus being the veteran gives us a chance going forward. As with any position on this team, the best player is going to play, but obviously Marcus being the vet, that's the way it'll go starting out.'
Footballguys view: Third round pick Desmond Ridder was reportedly the team's top quarterback in this year's class. While they didn't feel any urgency to move up to ensure they got him before the third round, that won't matter if Mariota falters or Ridder impresses in camp and the preseason. Both are good enough threats to produce as runners and the Falcons are likely to be playing from behind a lot, so both have value in superflex leagues. |

Falcons | Marcus Mariota contract update Tue Mar 22, 08:03 AM
Updating previous reports, Atlanta Falcons QB Marcus Mariota's deal is essentially a one-year deal worth $6.75 million with a $12 million option for 2023. He has a $5 million signing bonus with a $1.75 million guaranteed base salary. He has a $3 million roster bonus due the fifth day of the league year.
Footballguys view: The Falcons are using Mariota as a bridge quarterback. Where that bridge goes, and to who it goes with is up in the air. Expect the Falcons to select a quarterback in the 2021 NFL draft to tab as their potential quarterback of the future. |

Free-agent QB Marcus Mariota (Raiders) is reportedly high on the Atlanta Falcons' priority list following the team's trade of Matt Ryan on Monday, March 21.
Footballguys view: Mariota has experience working under Arthur Smith from their time together with the Titans. We'll see if Mariota can get signed and be more than a stop-gap quarterback for the Falcons as they rebuild. |

49ers | Marcus Mariota a fit for San Francisco? Tue Feb 22, 01:06 PM
Las Vegas Raiders impending free-agent QB Marcus Mariota could be of interest to the San Francisco 49ers as a bridge quarterback who could support Trey Lance in a backup role or start games should Lance need a little more developmental time, according to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.
Footballguys view: Mariota gives any team interested plenty of experience as a backup and potential starter. If added to the 49ers, Mariota could push Lance for the starting job and start if Lance proves to not yet be ready. With his athletic profile, Mariota could work well in the Shanahan system where play-action passing and bootlegs are the hallmark of the offense. |

Las Vegas Raiders QB Marcus Mariota will continue to be used in certain spots for the rest of the season, according to comments made by interim head coach Rich Bisaccia on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
Footballguys view: Mariota had a rushing touchdown in the big Thanksgiving win over the Cowboys. The Raiders would be wise to utilize his athletic skill set in the same manner going forward. Of course, that means Josh Jacobs and/or Kenyan Drake could get fewer opportunities in red zone areas. |
