NFL | Johnny Manziel likely done    Mon Jun 29, 10:31 AM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) admitted that his football career is likely in the past. 'In the past, probably, is the way I'd characterize it,' Manziel said, leaning forward and without a moment's hesitation. 'I've finally got to a point where I'm trying to achieve happiness in life, not happiness on the football field.'

Footballguys view: Manziel was a Heisman Trophy winner in college at Texas A&M and then was selected in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns. He only lasted two seasons in the NFL before getting bounced out of the league. Manziel then went to the CFL and failed with two teams. His last football was played in the AAF for the Memphis Express in 2019. Manziel will go down as one of the biggest busts in NFL history.

NFL | Johnny Manziel to play in AAF    Sat Mar 16, 10:21 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) signed with the Memphis Express of the Alliance of American Football Saturday, March 16.

Footballguys view: Manziel was cut from the CFL and pretty much banned from the league. Now, he finds his way back to the United States to play in this new league in 2019. The Express have burned through two starting quarterbacks (Christian Hackenberg, Zach Mettenberger) already this season.

CFL | Johnny Manziel released from CFL team    Thu Feb 28, 02:03 AM

The Montreal Alouettes released QB Johnny Manziel on Wednesday, Feb. 28, based on the direction of the Canadian Football League.

Footballguys view: Manziel reportedly contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play in the league, and the CFL has informed all of its club that it will not register a contract should any team attempt to sign him.

NFL | Johnny Manziel headed to Canada    Sat May 19, 12:11 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) has announced that he will be signing with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. He is scheduled to receive a two-year contract, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Manziel's comeback tour now head up North, and it will be interesting to see what kind of play he can provide up in Canada. A first-round pick of the Browns in 2014, Manziel failed to make it in the NFL due to off-field issues. He seems to have his life back on track but won't get a ticket back to the NFL just yet. If he performs well for the Tiger-Cats (and stays out of trouble) then perhaps there will be a team that takes a chance on Manziel in the NFL once again.

Patriots | NE unlikely to pursue Johnny Manziel    Mon May 14, 12:15 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) likely will no longer be pursued by the New England Patriots after the Patriots selected QB Danny Etling in the 2018 NFL Draft, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: Etling is a camp arm for the Patriots, and he may struggle to be much more for the team or in the NFL. Manziel is trying to make a comeback to the league and the Patriots were reportedly interested. Etling's presence shouldn't prevent them from being interested in another quarterback, but Reiss is one of the most connected writers out there...so we take it as gospel.

Patriots | New England meets with Johnny Manziel    Tue Mar 27, 07:13 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) met with the New England Patriots before and after his workout at Texas A&M Tuesday, March 27.

Footballguys view: It's interesting to note, especially since it's a team like the Patriots. However, we don't expect Manziel to get back into the league at this time...and maybe not ever again. Manziel is reportedly interested in playing in Canada to boost his NFL stock if necessary.

NFL | Johnny Manziel open to playing in Canada    Tue Mar 27, 05:12 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) said he is willing to play in the Canadian Football League if he does not receive interest from NFL teams.

Footballguys view: Manziel has to be open to the CFL, because that's likely his next stop as a professional football player. If he performs well in Canada, NFL teams might be more open to adding him back. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have Manziel (and Robert Griffin III) on the neg list, meaning they own his rights if he wants to play up North.

NFL | Johnny Manziel expected to throw again    Mon Mar 26, 02:20 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) is expected to throw to the Texas A&M receivers at their Pro Day Tuesday, March 27, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Manziel is doing whatever he can to get out there. He wants to prove that he's clean and sober, plus he's still capable of being a starting quarterback in the NFL. If Manziel can't get a shot in the NFL then he should head up to Canada to play in the CFL.

NFL | 13 teams present at Johnny Manziel's workout    Sat Mar 24, 10:23 AM

Updating a previous report, the Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, New England Patriots, New York Giants, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans had representatives at the University of San Diego to watch free-agent QB Johnny Manziel's (Browns) throwing session Thursday, March 22.

Footballguys view: Almost half the league was interested in seeing what Manziel could still do. In a quarterback desperate league he might actually get another shot. He's clean and sober now, and Manziel just wants an opportunity to prove he can stay on the right track and make it in the pros. Manziel may have to head up to the CFL to get a chance.

NFL | Johnny Manziel takes part in Pro Day    Thu Mar 22, 03:05 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) participated in the University of San Diego's Pro Day Thursday, March 22.

Footballguys view: If you believe Twitter, a dozen or so teams were there for this, but really they were there for the college players. Likely Manziel was just a side-show for them. After all, his throwing isn't the concern. His off-field nonsense is. And as far as we can tell, the NFL is not interested in it.

NFL | Johnny Manziel working on comeback    Tue Feb 13, 01:07 AM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) said in an interview with 'Good Morning America' that aired on Monday, Feb. 12, that he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder 'about a year ago' and has been taking medication for it. He has stopped drinking and said his goal is to make it back to the NFL. Manziel added that he's been working out and trying to convince a team to give him a second chance. 'I don't know what kind of comeback it will be,' he said. 'But I know I want to get back on a football field to what brought me so much joy in my life and it makes me happy doing as my job.'

Footballguys view: Manziel failed to make an impact on the field and his life fell apart off the field, so he was quickly bounced from the league. If he's clean and sober, there might be a team interested in giving him a chance at a comeback. If not, Manziel would be a star attraction in the XFL...but he'd have to wait until the 2020 launch.

NFL | Johnny Manziel talks with teams    Sat Jul 15, 05:49 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) said he has talked with a few teams about returning to the NFL.

Footballguys view: There has been little news about Manziel this year, but first and foremost he needs to convince teams that his life is back in order. We'd be surprised if some team took a chance on Manziel at this point of the offseason with training camp right around the corner. Perhaps he'll be able to get on board with a new team at a later date.

Saints | Saints have no interest in Johnny Manziel    Tue Mar 28, 10:48 PM

The New Orleans Saints have 'no interest' in signing free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns), according to a team source.

Footballguys view: The internet was ablaze when reports revealed that Saints coach Sean Payton had talked with Manziel some time around the Super Bowl. The Saints do need to think about a QB of the future when Drew Brees is done, but it doesn't seem like Manziel is that guy.

Saints | Johnny Manziel of Saints' interest?    Thu Mar 23, 10:35 AM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) had breakfast with New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton during Super Bowl week, and the two discussed a return to football.

Footballguys view: Manziel may get a chance somewhere--he still has upside--but it will be as a backup and he is unlikely to see the field. The Saints have weapons, so he'd have what he needed to succeed, if he can keep his head on straight.

NFL | Johnny Manziel to attempt comeback    Wed Mar 1, 10:59 AM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) is attempting a comeback and has drawn real interest from teams at the NFL Scouting Combine. He has re-hired agent Erik Burkhardt after Burkhardt forced him to make serious commitments.

Footballguys view: America loves second-chance stories. Manziel partied his way out of the league, but it's such a QB-desperate league there could be someone willing to give him a chance.

NFL | Johnny Manziel to volunteer for drug tests    Fri Feb 3, 05:08 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) plans to volunteer for testing under the NFL's drug policy as part of his comeback attempt, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Manziel does seem to be earnestly trying to turn his career around, but he is so far from the game right now that it's hard to picture him ever getting back to form. To be fair, he didn't flame out because of his play - he was still viable as an NFL quarterback at times before leaving the league, but Manziel has a lot of work to do just to get teams to answer his phone calls.

Browns | Cleveland on fifth QB in five games    Mon Sep 19, 08:31 PM

Cleveland Browns QB Cody Kessler will be the fifth starting quarterback in as many games for the Browns. Going back to the last two weeks of last season, the Browns have started former QBs Johnny Manziel and Austin Davis and QBs Robert Griffin III (shoulder), Josh McCown (shoulder) and now Kessler. Cleveland is the second team since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to start five different quarterbacks in five straight games, according to Elias.

NFL | Johnny Manziel says he will 'be back'     Tue Jul 19, 12:20 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel told his fans on social media that he will 'be back.' Manziel told The Washington Post last weekend that he's 'actually doing well.' 'I have good friends around me supporting what I do and I try to support them in what they want to do. I'm not saying I'm never drinking again, but for now just mostly being healthy. I've got a killer gym in my house and I can spend time working out. I'm interested in doing a lot of different things in my life -- including football -- but, right now, I'm just exploring options and waiting to see what the future holds.'

Footballguys view: Manziel was fraudulent as a pro prospect for multiple reasons on the field. His off-field antics got him out of the league, but don't think there's anything worth taking a chance on if he ever plays in the NFL again. Manziel will be a cautionary tale more than a player who is able to get his career on track.

NFL | AFL an option for Johnny Manziel?    Tue Jul 5, 12:57 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) is drawing interest from the Arena Football League. 'We could provide a strong platform for him to demonstrate that he is back,' AFL commissioner Scott Butera said. 'We would also work with him and provide him whatever help he needed to live a healthy life.'

Footballguys view: If Manziel is serious about a return to football, he may need to start in the Arena League or the Canadian League before the NFL comes calling again. The AFL (and the CFL) could use the hype a name like Manziel would bring to their game, and he needs a chance to show that he can stay clean and play football. He's suspended by the NFL for four games, and there's still likely another suspension upcoming for his role in a domestic violence incident that is still being litigated.

NFL | Johnny Manziel eyeing 2017 return    Fri Jul 1, 05:03 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) has been telling people privately that 2017 may be the best chance for him to play in the NFL again.

Footballguys view: Good luck with that. He'll be suspended for four games (and maybe more) regardless of where or when he ends up back in the NFL. Recent pictures of Manziel show just how out of football shape he is, so if he's truly committed to the game he needs to stop partying and add muscle. It's a QB desperate league, so perhaps there would be some team willing to take a chance on him....but the odds he's back in the NFL in 2017 are slim.

NFL | Johnny Manziel suspended four games    Thu Jun 30, 01:00 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) was suspended four games by the NFL Thursday, June 30, for substance abuse, according to sources.

Footballguys view: And this doesn't even include the likely suspension for his domestic violence case. Nobody was interested in bringing Manziel in so in many ways this is a non-factor, but it seems as though his days in the NFL are close to done.

Browns | Johnny Manziel to go sober?    Wed Jun 29, 06:39 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) has made it a goal to go sober starting Friday, July 1, and commence training for an NFL return.

Footballguys view: We'd like to believe that Manziel is serious about getting his life back on track. It's going to be a long road for him, and Manziel may not get back in the league even if he sobers up. There's still a domestic violence incident in Texas that needs to be dealt with before teams would even decide whether or not to pick him up. We don't think he plays in 2016, and we'd be shocked if he ever turned out to be more than a cautionary tale.

NFL | Johnny Manziel booked, posts bond    Wed May 4, 06:32 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) was booked and posted bond for his domestic violence case Wednesday, May 4, just one day before his first court hearing. Manziel was indicted last month after allegedly hitting his ex-girlfriend and threatening to kill her in January. He faces a Class A misdemeanor that carries up to a year in jail with a $4,000 fine.

Footballguys view: The legal process will take its course, then Manziel will have to deal with punishment from the league. We hope he gets the help he needs. It's not about football right now...and maybe won't be ever again. The kid needs a new direction as his life has spiraled down for quite some time.

Footballguys view: The legal process will run its course, but then Manziel will have to deal with the NFL. The league is much more serious about domestic violence issues than they used to be. Expect Manziel to at least get fined if not suspended for this.

NFL | Johnny Manziel hopes to play in 2016    Tue Apr 19, 10:30 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) said Tuesday, April 19, that he is still focusing on preparing to be in the National Football League in 2016. 'I'm hoping to take care of the issues in front of me right now so I can focus on what I have to do if I want to play in 2016,' Manziel said.

Footballguys view: How many times have we heard this and why should we believe it now? We hope Manziel gets his life together - forget football, for a minute, he seems like a gentleman who has far greater issues. Until he proves to the league he can focus on football and stay out of trouble, he's going to have a hard time playing in 2016 and beyond.

ESPN obtained the letter Friday from attorney Niki Ghazian, who wrote that 'evidence suggests' that Manziel and his friends 'were consuming drugs and alcohol.' Her client is seeking $31,580, including $19,580 in damage and replacement fees.

Rosenhaus has terminated his standard representation with Manziel, but said there is a five-day window for him to rescind that decision.

Footballguys view: We're all fed up with Manziel. He's been a fraud on the field, and his off-field problems have gotten him booted from the league. Manziel needs to get his life back on track if he ever wants to be a quality starter in the NFL.

'But we've got guys in the front office that make those decisions, and they put us in championships with those decisions.'   Broncos | Johnny Manziel not in Broncos' plans    Thu Apr 7, 02:24 PM

Updating an earlier report, free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) isn't of interest to the Denver Broncos, and they haven't discussed signing him.

Footballguys view: You can exhale now as there is far too much risk even for the QB-desperate Broncos. We have no idea where Manziel will land, if anywhere, and it's clear his downside overshadows his upside by quite a bit.

We'd be concerned with Manziel in the area given he couldn't stop himself from drinking himself out of Cleveland (which, let's be honest, he isn't the first to try). He has a connection to Kubiak (who was a Texas A&M coach, though long before Manziel arrived) and he might work in the coach's offense, but the risks scream "no thanks."

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) could still be disciplined for assaulting his ex-girlfriend in January, according to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. 'Those investigations have been ongoing,' Goodell said, noting that the league has yet to come to a satisfactory conclusion on the matter.

Footballguys view: Manziel might sit on the sidelines of the NFL for a while until all of this is sorted out and he and his agent Drew Rosenhaus win the trust of at least one organization.
