Falcons | Atlanta cleans house at coordinator    Mon Dec 31, 12:44 PM

Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, defensive coordinator Marquand Manuel and special teams coach Keith Armstrong were fired Monday, Dec. 31, according to a source.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Sarkisian's offense was never a fit for the talent of the Atlanta offense. Reports indicate the team could turn to former Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak to be their offensive coordinator. That would be a fine move if possible as Kubiak comes from the Shanahan system, and QB Matt Ryan (and the entire offense) looked great under Kyle Shanahan a couple of years ago.

Lions | In the market for a safety?    Fri Jul 16, 02:25 PM

The Detroit Lions could be on the lookout for another safety before the season, reports Tim Twentyman, of The Detroit News. There are questions about who will start opposite S Louis Delmas. S C.C. Brown has seen the most reps, as S Ko Simpson (knee) is still recovering from surgery and S Marquand Manuel has been inconsistent with his play.

Footballguys view: Any of these guys could be good week-to-week plug-ins for IDP leagues because of tackle opportunity, but none are assured of holding the job for a long time.

Footballguys view: An eight-year veteran, Manuel has a lot of starting experience but may be on the outside looking in after training camp.

Lions | Pearson leads the battle at strong safety    Tue Aug 4, 08:23 PM

Tom Kowalski, from MLive.com, reports the battle at strong safety is wide open and it's being contested by several players, including Kalvin Pearson, Daniel Bullocks and Marquand Manuel. Throughout the offseason workouts and for most of camp, Pearson has assumed the safety position next to Delmas. Pearson, though, isn't reading anything into that. "Not right now, because they say everything's up for grabs," said Pearson, who joined the Lions last season as a free agent. "I'm coming into this year like I always do. I'm going to work every day like I'm not a starter and wait for the first game."

Lions | Secondary fleshing itself out    Wed Jul 29, 03:34 AM

John Niyo, of The Detroit News, reports Detroit Lions rookie S Louis Delmas emerged as a vocal leader in the defense during the summer and appears to be locked in at one safety spot. The other figures to have plenty of competition in training camp, as Kalvin Pearson, Marquand Manuel and Daniel Bullocks could be in the mix. At cornerback, it appears Anthony Henry and Phillip Buchanon will be the starting pair. CB Eric King is likely to battle for the top nickel back role, while Keith Smith will challenge him.

Footballguys view: The strong safety battle could yield one of the best IDP deep sleepers, so it merits watching.

Lions | Manuel to compete for playing time    Sun Jul 5, 03:56 PM

Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions S Marquand Manuel will compete for playing time with S Louis Delmas, S Daniel Bullocks, S Kalvin Pearson and S Stuart Schweigert.

Footballguys view: Manuel has had moments of fantasy relevance in IDP leagues during his stops in Seattle, Green Bay, and most recently Denver, but he's a journeyman with limited talent. It would probably take injuries to Bullock and Pearson for him to have any value this year.
