Chiefs | EJ Manuel calling it quits Mon May 13, 05:16 PM
Kansas City Chiefs QB EJ Manuel announced his retirement Monday, May 13.
Footballguys view: Manuel spent all of last year out of football but latched on with the Chiefs in late February. Instead of competing to be a backup, Manuel decided to call it a day. A first-round pick of the Bills in the 2013 NFL draft, Manuel saw injuries and inconsistencies derail his career. He finishes with 3,767 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns and 16 interceptions as a pro and a 6-12 record as a starter with the Bills and the Raiders. |

Chiefs | Kansas City signs four players Fri Feb 22, 06:23 PM
Free-agent QB EJ Manuel (Raiders), WR Sammie Coates (Texans), WR Davon Grayson (Chiefs) and CB Dontae Johnson (Cardinals) signed with the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, Feb. 22. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Any target for Patrick Mahomes will get our attention in dynasty formats. Coates has been a bust during his pro career but we know the physical talent (strength, speed) is there. Grayson was undrafted out of East Carolina last year but he's got the speed and athleticism to get open outside. Super deep dynasty GMs should be following along with these two just in case. |

Redskins | Two quarterbacks work out for Redskins Tue Dec 4, 04:38 PM
Free-agent QBs Landry Jones (Steelers) and Ryan Mallett (Ravens) worked out for the Washington Redskins Tuesday, Dec. 4, according to sources. The Redskins will also consider signing free-agent QBs Josh Johnson (Raiders), EJ Manuel (Raiders) or T.J. Yates (Texans), among others.

Raiders | EJ Manuel makes case for backup job Fri Aug 31, 01:52 AM
Oakland Raiders QB EJ Manuel completed 18 of 22 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday, Aug. 30. Manuel was set to play the first half but was given the first two series of the second half ahead of QB Connor Cook as well.

Raiders | Connor Cook struggles in practice Tue Aug 14, 12:15 AM
Oakland Raiders QB Connor Cook made a few errors in practice Monday, Aug. 13, and he was pulled from the practice field by head coach Jon Gruden in favor of QB EJ Manuel. Cook and Manuel are battling for the No. 2 job behind QB Derek Carr. 'We're still figuring out who's the No. 2 quarterback,' Gruden said.

Raiders | Connor Cook pushing for QB2 role Sat Aug 11, 02:38 AM
Oakland Raiders QB Connor Cook went 11-for-19 for 141 yards and a touchdown against the Detroit Lions on Friday, Aug. 10. QB EJ Manuel, who served as the backup last season, was 4-for-6 for 46 yards in the game.
Footballguys view: Cook made the most of his opportunity in the preseason opener. Manuel may be more athletic but he has never been an impressive passer. Cook has looked terrible when forced into playing time (during his rookie season) but is a developmental prospect the Raiders could trust as their primary backup to Derek Carr in 2018. |

Raiders | Amari Cooper to be more involved? Sat Oct 7, 09:33 PM
Oakland Raiders QB EJ Manuel said he is going to make an effort to make WR Amari Cooper more involved in the offense early against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5.
Footballguys view: Cooper has been plagued by drops and lackluster play. Manuel actually threw the ball well last week, so Cooper has a chance to bounceback. He's worth a WR3/Flex start in this four-team bye week. |

Raiders | EJ Manuel to start Week 5 Mon Oct 2, 06:43 PM
Oakland Raiders QB EJ Manuel will be the starting quarterback against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5.
Footballguys view: Manuel did a good job moving the ball against the Broncos (11-of-17, 106 yards) in Week 4 but made a mistake throwing up a deep pass near the end of the game that was picked off by FS Justin Simmons. The Ravens have the 17th pass defense by allowing an average of 222.3 passing yards per game. |

Raiders | EJ Manuel eyeing backup role Fri Jun 16, 09:50 PM
Oakland Raiders QB EJ Manuel has been receiving second-team reps ahead of QB Connor Cook.

Bills | EJ Manuel benched Sun Jan 1, 03:41 PM
Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel was benched during the Sunday, Jan. 1, game against the New York Jets. Manuel was replaced by QB Cardale Jones.
Footballguys view: Manuel was erratic and did nothing to improve his career prospects in this opportunity to show the league where his development is at as he enters free agency. The Bills quarterback situation is one of the league's most unstable heading into 2017. |

Bills | Tyrod.Taylor will not play Week 17 Tue Dec 27, 12:25 PM
Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor will reportedly be benched for Week 17 against the New York Jets. Buffalo reportedly does not want to take the chance of owing Taylor $30.75 million should he get hurt in the regular-season finale. Impending free-agent EJ Manuel will start in his place.
Footballguys view: It's just a business decision for the Bills. They don't want Taylor to get hurt so they'll keep him off the field in Week 17. We may have seen the last of Taylor in a Bills uniform as some reports speculate the team will release him in the offseason. With Rex Ryan fired, the Bills are moving in a whole new direction yet again. |

Bills | EJ Manuel expected to be backup Tue Jul 19, 02:54 AM
Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel is expected to hang onto the primary backup job behind QB Tyrod Taylor, as rookie QB Cardale Jones hasn't made enough progress to pose an immediate threat.
Footballguys view: A first-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft...and the only QB taken in the top round that year...Manuel has struggled to impress as a pro. Not only does he get banged up too often, but Manuel also lacks the accuracy and touch of a consistent starter. We love that he's a football junkie, but it doesn't appear like he's a starting-caliber QB in the NFL. He may get another shot to be a starter somewhere else, but in Buffalo he's strictly the backup. |

Bills | EJ Manuel has difficulty with deep ball Wed Jun 15, 02:24 AM
Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel continued to have problems hitting the deep targets in stride during practice Tuesday, June 14.
Footballguys view: Manuel has to be one of the worst picks in Buffalo Bills history. Maybe Buffalo history, if you include the Sabres, a hockey team we're pretty sure would have passed on Manuel in round one of the 2013 NFL draft. If Cardale Jones figures out the playbook, Manuel could be gone. |

Bills | Cardale Jones struggling so far Thu Jun 9, 01:03 PM
Buffalo Bills QB Cardale Jones wasn't sharp during rookie camp, but the Bills coaches understand Jones is a project with great size and a rocket for an arm. It could be difficult for Jones to push QB EJ Manuel for the backup quarterback job in training camp as he tries to become familiar with the offense.
Footballguys view: Not surprisingly, given how raw he is. He may end up on the practice squad. |

Bills | EJ Manuel's option not picked up Mon May 2, 06:40 PM
Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel's fifth-year option is not being picked up by the team.
Footballguys view: Manuel was the first and only QB drafted in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. It was just a bad year for QBs, and Manuel has not impressed in the NFL. He's struggled to stay healthy and lost his job to Tyrod Taylor last year. This is likely to be his last season with the Bills. |

Bills | No extension for Tyrod Taylor Sat Apr 30, 02:18 PM
Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor will not receive a contract extension in light of the Bills drafting QB Cardale Jones. QB EJ Manuel's option is unlikely to be picked up, too.
Footballguys view: They've got a lot of work to do with Jones, though and Greg Roman has his work cut out here. That said, Jones' natural ability makes him intriguing and his upside is very high. Still, his floor is low right now and Taylor may end up the starter for some time anyway. |

Footballguys view: Taylor looked like he was in a lot of pain towards the end of the Patriots game on Monday night. Ryan said he has 'no idea' if Taylor will be ready. Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan said QB EJ Manuel is still the team's second-string quarterback, even though he was inactive for Week 10's game against the New York Jets.
Footballguys view: According to Ryan, QB Josh Johnson served as the backup to QB Tyrod Taylor because the Bills had a short week to prepare for the game and Johnson had a better grasp of the game plan as a result of being able to spend more time with offensive coordinator Greg Roman. |

Bills | Unlikely to sign Ryan Mallett Wed Oct 28, 12:32 PM
Free-agent QB Ryan Mallett (Texans) could have a suitor in the Buffalo Bills, but it's unlikely that they'd sign him. QB Tyrod Taylor (knee) is expected to be back after the bye week, and Buffalo isn't believed to be looking to replace QB EJ Manuel. Also, QB Josh Johnson is another option for the Bills, and he has knowledge of offensive coordinator Greg Roman's system.
Footballguys view: After his antics in Houston, it's clear Mallett has some growing up to do and may struggle to find a new home. Certainly his 'me-first' attitude is not something Rex Ryan needs in Buffalo, something even super-over confident Ryan can see. |

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel went 24-for-42 for 298 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 7 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also lost a fumble in the game and two of his turnovers resulted in touchdowns for the Jaguars.
Footballguys view: Manuel was much better in the second half, restoring our faith in the Jags as an easy matchup heading into the bye. Tyrod Taylor should start in Week 9. |

Bills | OC confident in EJ Manuel Fri Oct 23, 12:46 PM
Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman has full confidence in QB EJ Manuel and won't rule out that he could take the starting quarterback job from QB Tyrod Taylor if he lights it up in Week 7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. 'We have full confidence in EJ and we love the skill set. He's doing really good in his preparation. I really think he's growing as a professional in how he prepares week to week and I think that will really serve him well moving forward,' Roman said. Roman also said he thinks Manuel can still develop into an elite quarterback. The Bills have some pressure to find out how good Manuel can be after he was a first-round pick, Roman admitted.
Footballguys view: Taylor was excellent until Sammy Watkins went out, so Manuel will have to ace his chance this week. The Jaguars defense isn't that formidable, so there could be a quarterback controversy in Buffalo yet. |

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor (knee) took the first repetitions at practice Wednesday, Oct. 21, but the repetitions were split evenly with QB EJ Manuel. Taylor's workload is more than he was able to do at this point last week. However, the coaching staff isn't telling him anything in relation to his status for Week 7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Footballguys view: Manuel played a lot better last week than we expected. This week against the Jaguars, Manuel wouldn't be a bad start. The team could decide to give Taylor one more week of rest if necessary. |

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel threw for 263 yards and one touchdown but was picked off once Sunday, Oct. 18, in a 34-21 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Footballguys view: Manuel was serviceable, as the Bengals defense is not up to the standards of their offense. Manuel didn't do enough to push the possibly fictional potential quarterback controversy. If Manuel starts next week at Jacksonville, he should be a good streamer/DFS play. |

Bills | EJ Manuel will start in Week 6 Sun Oct 18, 10:07 AM
Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel will be the starting quarterback for the Week 6 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Footballguys view: Manuel's best connection is to Robert Woods if you're looking for a deep contrarian play in DFS, but chances are this will just bog down the Bills offense. Manuel supposedly has a chance to force a controversy with Tyrod Taylor if he plays well while Taylor is out, but we wouldn't recommend holding your breath waiting for that. |

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel took most of the first-team repetitions again Thursday, Oct. 15.
Footballguys view: We're expecting him to be 'the guy' this weekend, even if Rex Ryan continues to hedge on Tyrod Taylor. Taylor could have some QB2 upside if he goes, but we're more inclined to start the Bengals defense against EJ Manuel. In other words, keep him away from your lineups. |

Bills | EJ Manuel to see majority of reps Thu Oct 15, 01:09 AM
Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel will see 'the majority of reps' in practice this week with QB Tyrod Taylor (knee) dealing with a sprained medial collateral ligament, head coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Footballguys view: This could be exciting for those of you with a mind to play the Cincinnati Bengals defense. Manuel has just 16 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions and hasn't improved much in the short time he's been in Buffalo. He also hasn't played a meaningful snap since Week 4 of last season. We wouldn't start him at all, but he could be someone starting a defense against. Ryan says Taylor 'could' play but we'll believe it when we see him practice. |

Ryan said Taylor was 'banged up' and 'sore' Monday, Oct. 12, and a report later surfaced that Taylor was dealing with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his knee and 'might miss multiple games.'

Footballguys view: Manuel did enough this preseason to earn his backup job behind Tyrod Taylor. Plus, with Manuel in at quarterback the offense wouldn't drastically change. Manuel is athletic enough to move around and keep plays alive with his feet like Taylor (although not quite as quick/fast). Cassel is your traditional pocket passer and the offense would look a lot different with him under center. |

Footballguys view: We shouldn't be surprised by this....and fantasy owners should be somewhat excited about the prospects. Taylor is super athletic, and that could help open things up for LeSean McCoy if this team starts doing some option plays to keep defenses honest.
