49ers | New deals with John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan    Sat Sep 23, 12:30 AM

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan signed multi-year contract extensions with the 49ers Friday, Sept. 22. Terms of the extensions were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are set with Shanahan and Lynch running the show. They've been extremely competitive over the years once Shanahan and Lynch got their players in place. Shanahan has been able to craft an offense that can put up points and move the ball even though the team has gone through many quarterbacks to get there. So long as Shanahan is coaching and Lynch is putting the roster together, the 49ers should be perennial playoff teams with the ability to push for Super Bowls.

49ers | SF interested in keeping Emmanuel Moseley    Sun Feb 5, 05:51 PM

49ers | Jimmie Ward likely going on IR    Thu Aug 25, 08:04 PM

San Francisco 49ers S Jimmie Ward (hamstring) likely will start the season on the Reserve/Injured list, according to general manager John Lynch.

Footballguys view: The 49ers have good enough depth at safety in the form of George Odum and Tarvarius Moore to weather Ward's absence. Diontae Johnson has moved from corner to safety, and Tashaun Gipson was signed to bolster the safety depth further. Getting Chicago and Seattle to start the season will also help ease the pressure on the secondary, but the Broncos and Rams are up in Weeks 3 and 4.

49ers | Jalen Hurd continues to rehab    Sat May 1, 09:00 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Jalen Hurd (knee) is making good progress in his rehab and is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season, according to general manager John Lynch.

Footballguys view: Hurd, a third-round pick in 2019, has missed the past two seasons due to back and knee injuries. If healthy, Hurd has the ability to flash on the field like he did as a rookie in the preseason. Fantasy GMs in crazy deep dynasty formats can hold out hope he'll put it together but on a run-heavy team he's buried on the depth chart.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo still part of SF's plans    Mon Mar 29, 03:46 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo is still part of the team's plans even though they acquired the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, according to general manager John Lynch.

Footballguys view: Lynch has said this before. Garoppolo is part of their plans, but they need to be ready for the future...and that may happen sooner rather than later. They can win games with Garoppolo but he's hurt too often to trust. That's why they've secured the no.3 overall pick so they can draft their QB of the future. That could be Justin Fields (Ohio State), Trey Lance (North Dakota State) or Mac Jones (Alabama).

49ers | Niners unlikely to draft 1st-round QB    Sat Jan 9, 03:08 PM

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch says the team isn't likely to draft a quarterback in the first round this spring. 'We certainly could (select a QB, but) I don't anticipate that right now. But we're so early in the process, we'll do what's best for this team,' Lynch said, via NBC Sports Bay Area. 'I do wanna make it clear, and I think Kyle and I have been fairly transparent since we've been here, we have a lot of belief in Jimmy Garoppolo. Where does that come from? It comes from the sample that we have, and when he's been out there, we've been better. We've been successful.'

Footballguys view: Garoppolo has two more years left on his contract but there's not much left in dead money. That means the 49ers could move on from him this offseason if they felt that was the best move. They have the no.12 pick in the first round and with five cornerbacks as UFAs in 2021 they might go defense with that first pick.

49ers | John Lynch agrees to extension    Wed Jul 29, 01:38 PM

Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch agreed to terms Wednesday, July 29, on a contract extension, according to sources. The deal is expected to be five years in length, and the specific contract language is being finalized.

Footballguys view: The 49ers extended head coach Kyle Shanahan earlier and now Lynch gets his extension. Lynch is now linked to the team through 2025, and he's become one of the best general managers in the game. The 49ers are in Super Bowl contention, in large part due to the efforts of Lynch and Shanahan when it comes to building a team with quality talent.

49ers | San Francisco still looking to lock up John Lynch    Tue Jun 16, 05:34 PM

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch, the 2019 NFL Executive of the Year, is expected to be signed to a contract to keep him paired with head coach Kyle Shanahan through at least the 2025 season, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Footballguys view: Lynch and Shanahan both signed six-year contracts with the 49ers three years ago. With Shanahan re-upped by the team earlier this week, expect Lynch to get a similar extension. The 49ers are in a Super Bowl window under the guidance of Lynch and have worked to become one of the best teams in the game today.

49ers | CEO gives coach, GM vote of confidence    Mon Mar 25, 01:26 AM

San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York indicated Sunday, March 24 that the leash might be longer for head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch than for their predecessors. 'We're probably not going to get it all right in the first year, first two years, but this is something we're going to try to build, and I believe we have a very good foundation. I think the future is bright for us,' York said.

Footballguys view: Ah, the dreaded vote of confidence. Entering year three, there is no doubt that Lynch and Shanahan are on the hot seat if even a little bit. When signed, the duo received six-year contracts but things have not been trending in the right direction as the team continues to lose. They've made big moves like trading for Dee Ford so far this offseason, so we'll see if they can get on track in 2019.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon recuperating quickly    Tue Jan 29, 10:08 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is reportedly 'six weeks ahead in terms of time frame' as he continues to make his way back from the torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered during the preseason, according to general manager John Lynch.

Footballguys view: McKinnon was signed to be the lead back, although Matt Breida was reportedly going to be in a committee with him before McKinnon's injury. Breida was impressive but couldn't stay healthy last year, so expect the team to employ a committee that should be fluid in terms of workload from game to game.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo may take part in workouts    Wed Jan 23, 08:19 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (knee) hopefully will be able to participate in organized team activities this offseason, according to general manager John Lynch.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo injured his ACL in Week 3 of the 2018 season. Lynch said Garoppolo has not had any setbacks during his rehab. Even if Garoppolo gets some work in during OTAs we'd imagine he'd be at least a little bit limited. There's no need to give him too much too soon as Garoppolo continues to rehab. It looks like he's going to be full strength by the time training camp rolls around in the summer.

49ers | San Francisco watching DeShone Kizer    Thu Mar 23, 09:39 PM

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch attended Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer's pro day Thursday, March 23.

Footballguys view: The Niners are likely just kicking the tires on all sorts of quarterbacks but we still think Kyle Shanahan wants Kirk Cousins next year. Kizer could go as a developmental project though, but we won't see him early in the draft.

49ers | Kyle Shanahan will control roster    Thu Feb 9, 05:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will have control of the 53-man roster, while general manager John Lynch will control the 90-man roster, free agency and draft moves.

Footballguys view: The two have to work together though, because Shanahan will need some influence on the larger roster to get his 53 guys. It's a whole new world for the 49ers with no Trent Baalke looming over the precedings like a Grim Reaper. We hope it works more smoothly.

49ers | John Lynch to ease into role    Sat Feb 4, 09:02 PM

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch will ease into the role by leaning on Tom Gamble, the team's 2016 assistant general manager, and Paraag Marathe, who is expected to be in charge of contract negotiations.

Footballguys view: It sounds like Lynch will be given up/down calls and set the tone for the direction of the franchise, but not have to be thrown into the deep end. The 49ers are starting from square one, so this situation can accommodate Lynch learning on the job.

  49ers | 49ers' power structure in place    Mon Jan 30, 11:27 PM

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch will have the 'final say' over the draft, free agency and the 90-man roster. Meanwhile, Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who is likely the team's next head coach, will have the final say on the 53-man roster, according to ESPN's Jim Trotter.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are giving Lynch a lot of power in his first personnel job, but the hope is that Shanahan had input in his hiring. This is the picture of an organization truly rebuilding from the ground up.

49ers | San Francisco to name John Lynch GM    Sun Jan 29, 08:44 PM

The San Francisco 49ers will hire retired SS John Lynch as general manager, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Wow! Talk about your surprising moves, no beat writer around the team was mentioning Lynch as a candidate for 49ers general manager. After 15 years in the NFL, Lynch retired in 2008 and has been a color analyst with FOX ever since. We love this out of the box thinking, but let's hope Lynch can put more experienced personnel men around him. He has no experience running a team or officially evaluating talent.

Buccaneers | Brian Urlacher to visit training camp     Fri Jan 31, 01:10 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith invited retired LB Brian Urlacher to visit training camp. 'Brian is a family member for life,' Smith said. 'I've had the privilege to be around a lot of great players, any great player I've been around is always welcome wherever I am. We're trying to build something here football-wise, and I'm going to call on the Brian Urlachers of the world, and of course all our former Bucs around here. Derrick Brooks will tell you I've been in his ear quite a bit, got a chance to text with John Lynch yesterday... anytime you can have players around your current roster that have been through our system and know what it takes, it's a good thing. I will always be inviting any old player that I've been around.'

Broncos | Lynch critical of Cutler trade    Sat Jul 18, 08:14 AM

ESPNChicago.com reports former NFL S John Lynch told a Chicago radio station that the Denver Broncos erred in trading QB Jay Cutler to the Chicago Bears this offseason. 'This is a guy, in my mind, that's a once-in-every-15-year-type talent. He's got that kind of skill,' Lynch said. 'I think he'll grow into the other things. I sometimes think during this whole ordeal, they tried to paint him as a bad guy, but he's not a bad guy at all. He's got some growing up to do, but hopefully he learned something from this whole ordeal and offseason.'

Footballguys view: Everyone's got a strong opinion about this deal, and it seems like the prevalent one is that the Bears got the best of the Broncos in the trade. If Kyle Orton can execute Josh McDaniels system true to its design, people will be singing a different tune in a few months.
