Giants | No deal for Kregg Lumpkin     Fri Mar 8, 11:16 AM

The New York Giants have informed impending free-agent RB Kregg Lumpkin he will not be getting a new deal, according to a source, and will head to free agency.

Footballguys view: No real surprise here. Lumpkin could latch on with another team as a camp body because he's a versatile back.

Giants | Two RBs uncertain to return    Thu Feb 7, 12:32 AM

It is uncertain if the New York Giants will bring back either impending free-agent RB Kregg Lumpkin or RB Ryan Torain. Both were brought in late last season for depth.

Footballguys view: We'd be surprised if either of these RBs came back to the Giants but anything is possible. They have David Wilson as their starting back because of the release of Ahmad Bradshaw.

Giants | Kregg Lumpkin, David Wilson ready if needed    Tue Dec 18, 10:19 PM

New York Giants RBs Kregg Lumpkin and David Wilson split the carries in Week 15 with RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot, knee) sidelined. They were efficient in the loss, and are ready again if needed in Week 16.

Footballguys view: Wilson could start again for the Giants, with Lumpkin coming in on passing downs. We like Wilson as a RB2 in week 16 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Giants | New RBs to start on scout team    Thu Nov 29, 11:06 AM

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said new RB Ryan Torain and RB Kregg Lumpkin will start on the scout team. There is a possibility they could play in Week 13.

Footballguys view: We're not expecting much from Torain or Lumpkin if they do play in week 13. Rookie David Wilson should be in line for touches behind starter Ahmad Bradshaw.

Giants | Pass on several RBs    Tue Nov 27, 11:03 PM

The New York Giants gave free-agent RBs Rock Cartwright (49ers), Derrick Coleman (Vikings), Ryan Grant (Redskins) and Cadillac Williams (Rams) tryouts Tuesday, Nov. 27, before settling on RBs Kregg Lumpkin and Ryan Torain.

Footballguys view: Lumpkin is a versatile back who can contribute as a runner of receiver out of the backfield. Torain is more of a banger who can grind it out between the tackles and can be effective in a one cut system.

Giants | Sign Kregg Lumpkin    Tue Nov 27, 02:00 PM

The New York Giants signed RB Kregg Lumpkin (Seahawks) Tuesday, Nov. 27.

Footballguys view: Lumpkin gives the Giants a bigger back they didn't have on their roster after Andre Brown went down with a leg injury. He's a versatile weapon who can contribute as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. We're not expecting much from him as a third RB behind Ahmad Bradshaw and David Wilson.

Seahawks | Week 2 Inactives    Sun Sep 16, 02:50 PM

The Seattle Seahawks have declared WR Charly Martin, OT James Carpenter, DL Jaye Howard, CB Jeremy Lane, RB Kregg Lumpkin, OT Russell Okung, SS Winston Guy inactive for Week 2.

Footballguys view: Okung is out, so the Seahawks will have to turn to their backup at left tackle. He has not stayed healthy for very long since the Seahawks took him in the first round of the 2010 draft.

Seahawks | Two will compete for backup RB job    Wed May 9, 02:34 PM

Seattle Seahawks RBs Kregg Lumpkin and Robert Turbin are expected to compete for the No. 2 running back job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Lumpkin is a talented veteran with versatility to his game but injuries and inconsistencies have prevented him from playing up to his potential in the pros. Turbin is the grinder from Utah State. His game is a lot like starter Marshawn Lynch. Both RBs take no prisoners when they pound a defense into submission. We expect Turbin to win the backup job.

Seahawks | Three RBs expected to compete for roster spot    Sat Mar 24, 12:09 PM

Seattle Seahawks RBs Kregg Lumpkin, Tyrell Sutton and Vai Taua are expected to compete for one roster spot during training camp.

Footballguys view: We like Sutton best from this list as he's the most versatile of the group. When in Carolina he lined up at both RB and FB. He's a good receiver out of the backfield and can also help out as a return man on special teams.

Buccaneers | LeGarrette Blount gaining trust with OC    Wed Nov 9, 01:34 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB LeGarrette Blount said he is gaining more trust with offensive coordinator Greg Olson, and Blount is hoping to be used more on third-down passing situations. RB Kregg Lumpkin was in on most third downs in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints. 'I feel like that if I work a little harder in practice every week, then they'll become more and more confident to keep me in the game when we're in those situations when we're behind. It (stinks) that I have to come out of the game for the 2-minute offense or in our passing offense.'

Footballguys view: We could see Blount emerge as the fantasy playoffs approach. The Bucs could use him more as a receiver out of the backfield because of the season ending injury to Earnest Graham.

Buccaneers | LeGarrette Blount will be primary back    Tue Nov 1, 01:20 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB LeGarrette Blount (knee), who will return to game action in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints, will be the team's primary back and will even stay on the field for third downs with RB Earnest Graham (Achilles') out for the year. 'Oh yeah, I know I'm going to play third downs in this game,' Blount said. 'I'm probably not going to play all of them, but I know I'm going to play quite a few of them.' Blount said he is fully recovered from his knee injury.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Blount looks like his old self this week against the Saints. If he needs a breather or isn't quite the same then we'll see some carries get split between Kregg Lumpkin and Mossis Madu.

Buccaneers | LeGarrette Blount likely to play    Mon Oct 31, 06:04 PM

Buccaneers | Mossis Madu to have limited role    Wed Oct 26, 06:28 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mossis Madu will have a very limited role at tailback and will also be used on special teams when the team resumes play in Week 9. RB LeGarrette Blount (knee) is expected to return as the lead back, and RB Kregg Lumpkin will become the third-down option.

Buccaneers | Hopeful of LeGarrette Blount's return    Tue Oct 25, 01:17 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are hoping that RB LeGarrette Blount (knee) will be able to return to the starting lineup following their Week 8 bye. If Blount can't go in Week 9, RB Kregg Lumpkin will get the start, unless the team signs someone from the practice squad.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to know the name Chad Spann. He's a tough RB with a low center of gravity and strong leg drive. Spann is on the Bucs practice squad, but may get activated now that Earnest Graham is out for the year.

Buccaneers | LeGarrette Blount misses practice    Wed Oct 19, 06:09 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB LeGarrette Blount (knee) missed practice Wednesday, Oct. 19, and it looks like he will miss his second straight game in Week 7. He is walking with a tight wrap around his sprained left knee.

Footballguys view: Looks like more from Earnest Graham this week as the Bucs face off at home against the Bears. Even if he's shut down as a runner Graham can be used effectively as a receiver out of the backfield.

Buccaneers | Earnest Graham runs for 109 yards    Sun Oct 16, 11:40 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Earnest Graham, getting the start in place of the injured RB LeGarrette Blount (knee), rushed for 109 yards on 17 carries in Week 6 against the New Orleans Saints. Graham also added two catches for 22 yards. His backup, RB Kregg Lumpkin, totaled 13 yards on two totes.

Footballguys view: Graham showed great footwork, a low pad level, and relentless effort on his way to 100 yards. The Bucs running game is in good hands if LeGarrette Blount can't return soon. Graham is an RB2 until Blount returns.

Buccaneers | To lean heavily on Earnest Graham    Tue Oct 11, 01:52 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris indicated that the team will likely lean heavily on RB Earnest Graham in Week 6 against the New Orleans Saints if RB LeGarrette Blount (knee) is unable to play. RB Kregg Lumpkin will likely be the third-down specialist. The team can also incorporate RB Allen Bradford into the game at some point.

Footballguys view: Graham is very versatile and can be relied on as a receiver out of the backfield in addition to how he can help as a runner. He'll get a bulk of the touches from the RB position while Blount is out.

Buccaneers | LeGarrette Blount unlikely to play in Week 6    Mon Oct 10, 04:39 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB LeGarrette Blount (knee) is unlikely to be available against the New Orleans Saints in Week 6. Also, the team doesn't expect DL Gerald McCoy (ankle) to be available after injuring his left ankle in Week 5. McCoy is being listed as week-to-week. RBs Earnest Graham, Kregg Lumpkin and Allen Bradford are options at running back if Blount cannot play.

Footballguys view: Graham is a versatile player who can be effectively used as a Running Back or Fullback. He could be the lead back for the Bucs if Blount can't play because of this knee injury.

Buccaneers | Three to compete for third down RB job    Thu Aug 4, 03:31 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers FB Earnest Graham, RB Kregg Lumpkin and RB Allen Bradford are expected to compete to be the third-down back during training camp.

Footballguys view: Graham's not the same player he used to be, but is a versatile player who can do a little of everything. Lumpkin is an instinctive back who knows how to patiently wait for rushing lanes to open. However, injuries have held him back during his pro career. Bradford is a classic banger. He is tough between the tackles and loves to take on defenders at the point of attack.

Buccaneers | Earnest Graham could be third-down back    Mon Aug 1, 12:21 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers FB Earnest Graham is the front-runner to be the team's top backup to RB LeGarrette Blount this year. Graham could see less time at fullback as a result. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson said he has a lot of confidence in Graham and trusts him. He said if the season were to start today, Graham would be the team's third-down back. RB Kregg Lumpkin is also in the mix, and the team could always decide to re-sign free-agent RB Cadillac Williams. 'I know Earnest can handle the third down role. We'll see if Kregg can do that, too,' Olson said.

Packers | Kregg Lumpkin hoping to make 53-man roster    Thu Jul 29, 07:45 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Kregg Lumpkin received most of the carries with the No. 1 offense during OTAs last month when RBs Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson received a breather, reports Packers.com's Mike Spofford. Lumpkin is looking to make the 53-man roster out of camp, and running backs coach Edgar Bennett praised Lumpkin's natural running instincts and soft hands as his best qualities. 'This kid is talented, and this kid is committed,' Bennett said. 'We're talking about a guy, to be quite frank, who hasn't missed a day. In the offseason workout program, he hasn't missed a beat. You root for guys like that.' Lumpkin needs to stay healthy if he wants to make the roster, but his work on the practice squad last year should give him a leg up over his competition.

Packers | Lumpkin to be released    Sat Sep 5, 02:41 PM

Aaron Wilson, of the National Football Post, reports the Green Bay Packers will release RB Kregg Lumpkin, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: We like Lumpkin's overall skill set, because he runs with good power, balance, and vision. However, he has trouble staying healthy and was outplayed this preseason by undrafted rookie free agent Tyrell Sutton. While at Northwestern Sutton also struggled to stay healthy, so the Packers may bring Lumpkin back in on the practice squad.

Packers | Sutton and Lumpkin fighting for last RB spot    Thu Sep 3, 07:54 PM

Greg A. Bedard, of Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, projects RB Tyrell Sutton to make the Packers final roster over Kregg Lumpkin

Footballguys view: Both RBs are good enough to catch on somewhere else if they get cut. Sutton is an excellent receiver and adequate return man, even if he is too small and not fast or quick enough to be a real playmaker or workhorse. Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports reported that two other NFC teams are watching to see if Sutton is cut. Lumpkin is another very talented Georgia back who didn't stand out because he played with the likes of Danny Ware and Thomas Brown. He's had his share of health issues since coming into the league.

CBSSports.com reports Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said he hopes RB Kregg Lumpkin (shoulder) will be able to play in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.

Footballguys view: Lumpkin is a talented backup that could produce with more opportunity, but he also has had trouble staying healthy in his pro career. If he can't get back to practicing and playing he'll continue to lose ground to Brandon Jackson, DeShawn Wynn, and even rookie Tyrell Sutton.

Packers | McCarthy: 'Don't count out Lumpkin'    Fri Jul 24, 07:52 PM

Jason Wilde, of the Wisconsin State Journal, reports that Packers head coach Mike McCarthy "cautioned not to count out Kregg Lumpkin" in a discussion of the running backs on the team.

Footballguys view: Lumpkin impressed us a lot in his very limited action last year, and between how highly pursued he was coming out of high school and his time at Georgia, he has a good pedigree. We are expecting a bounce-back from Ryan Grant, but if he falters, there are some underrated backs behind him on the depth chart that could threaten to steal touches.

Packers | Want to run the ball more in 2009    Sat Jul 11, 09:01 PM

Mike Vandermause, from the Green Bay Press Gazette, reports the plan for the 2009 season is for the Packers to run the ball more frequently. At least that's what offensive coordinator Joe Philbin is hoping. Philbin was talking recently about his expectation that Ryan Grant would get the bulk of the carries this season. But then he added that if the Packers can run more often, then other backs on the team, such as Brandon Jackson, could see their share of carries go up as well. "Boy I'd love to see us run 32-34 times a game where we need to split up the carries a little better," said Philbin. "We haven't been that type of a team consistently. We've had spurts where we ran it that much but we need to get it up in the 30s on a consistent basis. When that happens the way the game unfolds dictates that you balance it out a little better. When you're running it 24 times, it's a little different."

Footballguys view: The last three Super Bowl champions haven't ran for more than 45% of their offensive plays, so running the ball more hasn't been a winning strategy recently. The Packers ran the ball 43% of the time last year, and have perhaps the best WR corps in the league. If they do run the ball more it could mean more opportunities for Ryan Grant and change of pace back Brandon Jackson. If Grant doesn't run hard the team could replace him with Kregg Lumpkin who has been impressive on the field when he's not injured.
