Footballguys view: We expect players like RB Dmitri Nance and WR Ryan Wolfe to be candidates for the Falcons practice squad.

Falcons | Eight players signed to futures contracts    Mon Jan 4, 07:00 PM

The Atlanta Falcons have announced they have signed C Rob Bruggeman, WR James Swinton, QB D.J. Shockley, WR Andy Strickland, C Blake Schlueter, DE Maurice Lucas, RB Antone Smith and OG Jose Valdez to futures contracts. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. All eight spent time on the Falcons' practice squad this season.

Footballguys view: Antone Smith is an interesting prospect to keep an eye on in the deepest dynasty leagues. The former Florida State back was a replacement player at the Senior Bowl after Arian Foster was hurt in practice. He is electric in open space, and has the speed and quickness to hang in the NFL. However, he is a liability when running between the tackles and goes down too easily with arm tackles.

Falcons | Eight signed to practice squad    Sun Sep 6, 06:19 PM

AtlantaFalcons.com reports the Atlanta Falcons have re-signed free agents WR Troy Bergeron, OL Mike Butterworth, LB Robert James, DE Maurice Lucas, CB Glenn Sharpe, QB D.J. Shockley, OG Jose Valdez and DT Vance Walker to their practice squad.

Footballguys view: University of Georgia star DJ Shockley stays in the Falcons organization after he got beat out by UDFA John Parker Wilson to be the teams #3 QB.

Falcons | T. Brown, Ferguson among roster cuts    Sat Sep 5, 05:22 PM

The Atlanta Falcons have announced the release of WR Troy Bergeron, RB Thomas Brown, OL Mike Butterworth, WR Robert Ferguson, LB Robert James, WR Aaron Kelly, DE Maurice Lucas, CB William Middleton, TE Jason Rader, QB D.J. Shockley, OG Jose Valdez, DT Vance Walker and LB Jamie Winborn.

Footballguys view: Jason Snelling made the final roster over Brown, and he could be a very valuable waiver wire pickup if something happens to Michael Turner. Snelling is a RB/FB 'tweener, and would be the power back the Falcons would team up with Jerious Norwood in case of emergency. Snelling even played a little Wildcat QB last year for Atlanta. Marty Booker and Eric Weems made the team as the fourth and fifth wide receivers.

Falcons | Sign eight more undrafted free agents    Tue Apr 28, 11:24 AM

The Atlanta Falcons announced Tuesday, April 28, that they have signed undrafted free-agent WR Darren Mougey (San Diego State), QB John Parker Wilson (Alabama), DE Maurice Lucas (Colorado), LS Robert Shiver (Auburn), OL Jose Valdez (Arkansas), LB Derek Nicholson (Florida State), P Robbie Dehaze (Northern Arizona) and LB Brock Christopher (Missouri).

Footballguys view: Some people have called John Parker Wilson a "sleeper" QB in this draft class. Well he certainly did look asleep at the Senior Bowl and did not impress with his play. He does not have a good arm and holds the ball really low - leading to more fumbles and turnovers. His release is long and deliberate, and he tends to lock onto his primary receiver. He is a good leader on the field, and is stronger and more durable than former Crimson Tide QB Brodie Croyle. With only Chris Redman and D.J. Shockley battling for the #2 spot behind Matt Ryan there is actually a chance that J.P. Wilson could find a home in Atlanta.
