NFL | Brandon Lloyd retires    Thu Oct 22, 01:57 PM

Free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (49ers) announced his retirement.

Footballguys view: Does this mean we're getting a sequel to the Zombie movie "After Effect?" At the very least can he somehow show up on The Walking Dead? Lloyd has an IMDB page now, which is exciting...until we remember our own Andrew Garda does too and then recall it's really not a big deal (sorry Andrew).

Panthers | Brandon Lloyd to wear Carolina blue?    Wed Aug 19, 09:51 PM

Free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (49ers) could be a player of interest for the Carolina Panthers. He made three starts in 14 games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2014. He led the lead with 1,448 receiving yards as recently as 2010, but he it is his only 1,000-yard season.

49ers | SF has no talks with Brandon Lloyd    Sun Mar 29, 07:07 AM

Free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (49ers) has had no conversations with his former team about a new contract.

Footballguys view: Lloyd should be out there if the 49ers get desperate at the position. This is a great WR draft class, and we think the 49ers would be best served to look at one during the draft rather than bring back the veteran Lloyd.

49ers | Friday injury report    Fri Dec 26, 06:45 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde (ankle), WR Stevie Johnson (knee) and S Eric Reid (concussion) have been ruled out for Week 17. CB Tramaine Brock (hamstring), LB Ahmad Brooks (thumb), CB Perrish Cox (shoulder) and WR Bruce Ellington (hamstring) are questionable. CB Chris Culliver (knee), WR Brandon Lloyd (groin), C Marcus Martin (illness) and DE Justin Smith (back) are probable.

Footballguys view: Frank Gore will get another full workload with Hyde out, but the Cardinals are one of the worst matchups in the league for running backs not named Marshawn Lynch.

49ers | Brandon Lloyd questionable    Fri Nov 7, 05:45 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Lloyd (hamstring) was limited in practice Friday, Nov. 7, and is questionable for Week 10 against the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: Lloyd had been making some big plays earlier this year, but he hasn't been as big a part of the 49ers pass offense in recent weeks. This injury won't help, but it could make Michael Crabtree, Stevie Johnson, and Anquan Boldin better plays if he is inactive.

49ers | Brandon Lloyd left early    Mon Nov 3, 01:41 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Lloyd (hamstring) left the game early in Week 9 due to an injury.

Footballguys view: Hamstring injuries are known to linger if not treated properly. We'll see Lloyd eased back into practice so this injury is not aggravated.

49ers | Stevie Johnson not frustrated with role    Fri Oct 31, 02:18 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson, who is behind WRs Anquan Boldin, Michael Crabtree and Brandon Lloyd on the depth chart, isn't frustrated by his role in the offense. Johnson has 25 catches for 315 yards and three touchdowns this year, and he had 1,000 yards receiving in three of his four years with the Buffalo Bills. "No frustration at all," Johnson said. "(The) only sense of frustration is being a competitor, you know, wanting to do more. But it ain't like there's a bunch of pansies in front of me.'

Footballguys view: Johnson (and Brandon Lloyd) are playing as well as they did in their heydays, which is great for Colin Kaepernick, but bad for Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin, as the WR opportunity is now being split four ways in an offense that tends to skew run-heavy when the 49ers dictate the game to their opponents.

49ers | Stevie Johnson very productive    Fri Oct 24, 02:39 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson has played only 20 percent of the snaps in the last month, but he's been the team's most effective receiver in that time. WR Brandon Lloyd has played 40 percent of the offensive snaps, but QB Colin Kaepernick has a passer rating of 127.8 on passes to Johnson and just 87.8 to Lloyd.

Footballguys view: Both of them are capping the Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree's weekly value without creating much of their own. It is a help for Colin Kaepernick's value as a passer.

49ers | Stevie Johnson, Brandon Lloyd not locks to make roster    Tue Jul 22, 11:21 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson is the frontrunner for the No. 3 WR job, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, but he added that neither Johnson nor WR Brandon Lloyd is a lock to make the roster. Maiocco believes that Johnson's salary and the fact that Lloyd doesn't contribute on special teams would make them expendable if a younger receiver proves capable of filling the No. 3 WR role.

Footballguys view: We imagine that Johnson will make the final roster. However, Lloyd may have to go back to making direct-to-dvd zombie movies.

49ers | Two expected to compete for No. 3 WR job    Sat Jul 5, 11:11 AM

San Francisco 49ers WRs Stevie Johnson and Brandon Lloyd likely will compete for the No. 3 wide receiver job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Lloyd was out of football last year, but he did manage to star in a direct-to-DVD zombie movie. We like Stevie Styles in this competition. He could work well as a third receiver behind Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin. Johnson could also start on the outside if somebody above him on the depth chart gets hurt. With so many young receivers on the roster (Quinton Patton, Bruce Ellington) we may not see Lloyd make the final roster.

49ers | Brandon Lloyd trying to take advantage    Tue Jun 3, 11:58 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Lloyd has been showing well during voluntary workouts, taking advantage of the fact WRs Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree were resting, and WRs Stevie Johnson (hamstring) and Quinton Patton (foot) out with ailments.

Footballguys view: Just don't duck when a pass is coming in. Lloyd spent last year out of football, starred in a "direct to dvd" zombie movie (with Daniel Baldwin!) and is not the same player he used to be. With the addition of Stevie Styles (Johnson) we're not certain Lloyd will even make the team.

49ers | Stevie Johnson to compete for playing time    Fri May 9, 07:18 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson will compete with WRs Quinton Patton and Brandon Lloyd for playing time this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: He'll start as the third wide receiver and should be able to easily beat Patton and Lloyd, unless it's for a role in a zombie film in which case Lloyds has the experience.

49ers | Brandon Lloyd signs    Tue Apr 15, 01:20 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots) to an undisclosed deal Tuesday, April 15.

Footballguys view: Let's hope he doesn't duck when any incoming passes are headed in his direction. Lloyd played for the 49ers earlier in his career after being a fourth-round pick by the team in 2003. He bounced around the league after that, and he was out of football in 2013. Lloyd will compete as a reserve receiver, but is not guaranteed a roster spot.

49ers | Talking to Brandon Lloyd    Thu Apr 10, 10:46 AM

The San Francisco 49ers are talking to free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots).

Footballguys view: More than likely the team is just looking at depth options, as Lloyd didn't play at all last year. Instead, Lloyd appeared in a zombie "movie" called After Effect. Which makes us wonder - do the Niners have a concern about a coming zombie apocalypse? Are they just having Lloyd in to pick his brain so they can prepare? It makes as much sense as actually expecting anything from him this year if they do sign him.

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has contacted free-agent WR Deion Branch (Patriots) and WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots) to gauge their availability to play this season.

Patriots | Not interested in Brandon Lloyd    Sat Sep 14, 09:22 PM

NFL | Brandon Lloyd has received several inquiries    Wed Sep 11, 01:25 PM

NFL | Brandon Lloyd not interested in playing    Sat Sep 7, 11:05 AM

Free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots) is not interested in playing this season even though there are teams looking for wide receivers.

Footballguys view: Lloyd got exactly zero interest after the Patriots let him go earlier this year. It looks like he's going to retire after playing for six different teams during his 10 year career.

Link to story

Patriots | May not be interested in Brandon Lloyd return    Sun Jun 30, 11:42 AM

The New England Patriots may not be interested in re-signing free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd because he was not a good fit in the locker room last season, which is something the team likely will be looking for this season.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have plenty of inexperience at the WR position but bringing back Lloyd may not be the influence the team wants around their young players at the position. Lloyd may have to wait until injuries hit in training camp before getting another shot with a team.

Link to story

Patriots | Julian Edelman could have big role    Fri Jun 28, 02:52 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman could have a big role with the team in 2013 because he is the most familiar wide receiver with QB Tom Brady, and because of the subtraction of WRs Wes Welker, Brandon Lloyd, Donte' Stallworth, Deion Branch and TE Aaron Hernandez, and the injury situation with TE Rob Gronkowski.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners can't forget about Edelman here. Edelman is the only WR left on the roster who recorded a catch for the Patriots last year. He's got good chemistry with Tom Brady and could be an interesting player to keep an eye on. However, Edelman is still recovering from a foot injury he suffered last year. He's never played a full 16 game season during his pro career.

Chiefs | Brandon Lloyd could be option    Wed Jun 26, 04:26 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs could show interest in free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots) if WRs Donnie Avery and Jonathan Baldwin are not good enough complements to WR Dwayne Bowe.

Footballguys view: Lloyd can still work the sidelines and create some separation on short and intermediate routes, but his personality could be too much for some teams, and he showed little ability to get downfield or create after the catch last year. If Lloyd is signed, it's more of a bad reflection on Baldwin and Avery than anything good about Lloyd.

Jets | Could show interest in Brandon Lloyd    Wed May 8, 10:18 PM

The New York Jets could express interest in free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots) this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Jets have big questions marks in their WR corps behind Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley. They could have interest in Lloyd or another veteran like Braylon Edwards.

Patriots | Brandon Lloyd might be back    Thu Mar 21, 12:06 AM

Free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots) might return to the New England Patriots, as there isn't believed to be a huge market for his services.

Footballguys view: Lloyd failed to live up to expectations with the Patriots in 2012. He could return to the team for a cheaper price. Fantasy owners should consider Lloyd a WR3 or flex option in 2013 if he goes back to New England.

Link to story

Vikings | Not interested in Brandon Lloyd    Sun Mar 17, 12:04 PM

The Minnesota Vikings have not expressed interest in free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots) at this point.

Footballguys view: The Vikings added WR Greg Jennings via free agency and could still be interested in adding more players at the position. This draft class is very deep at the WR position so they may choose to go that route instead of adding a veteran.
