NFL | Former players sue over concussions     Thu Dec 22, 10:43 AM

Former NFL players Jamal Lewis, Dorsey Levens, Fulton Kuykendall and Ryan Stewart say in a federal lawsuit that brain injuries have left them struggling with medical problems years after their playing days ended. The players filed the lawsuit against the National Football League and FNL Properties LLC this week in U.S. District Court in Atlanta. The players maintain the NFL knew as early as the 1920s of the potential for concussions to harm its players. They argue the league concealed the dangers from coaches, trainers, players and the public until June 2010, when it publicly acknowledged the health threats and warned players and teams.

NFL | Jamal Lewis considering a comeback?    Fri Sep 24, 11:23 AM

Free-agent RB Jamal Lewis (Browns) has entertained thoughts of a comeback, according to Mike Preston, of The Baltimore Sun. Lewis tadmits to watching games, and keeping track of teams in need of a running back. Lewis says he works out regularly and weighs 250 pounds, only ten pounds above his playing weight.

Footballguys view: If Lewis gets signed by a team like the Patriots or Saints at some point this year because of injury problems in the backfield, he could have value. Stay tuned.

James Varney, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports the New Orleans Saints met with unrestricted free-agent RB Jamal Lewis this week, according to team officials.

NFL | Agent thinks Lewis could help right team    Thu Feb 18, 02:22 PM

James Walker, of ESPN.com, reports Mitch Frankel, agent for unrestricted free-agent RB Jamal Lewis (Browns), said he believes Lewis can contribute for right organization as a situational player if he decides to play next season. 'If Jamal wants to play and he's cleared to play, I think he's got a lot of football he can bring to the table to help an organization. He can be a significant contributor to the right organization. [Retired RB Jerome Bettis] and some other guys at the end of their careers took on a different role, and I think Jamal can do that,' Frankel said.

Browns | Lewis released    Wed Feb 17, 05:35 PM

ClevelandBrowns.com reports the Cleveland Browns have terminated the contract of RB Jamal Lewis.

Footballguys view: The writing was on the wall for Lewis, and this news comes as no surprise. The Browns liked what they saw from Jerome Harrison at the end of the season, and have James Davis coming back from injury this year. They could also select a running back in the 2010 NFL Draft, perhaps with a premium pick. There are some mock drafts that have them taking Clemson RB C.J. Spiller in the first-round.

Browns | Lewis could come back next season    Mon Jan 4, 05:50 PM

Mary Kay Cabot, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns RB Jamal Lewis (concussion) said he will decide his future for 2010 after he fully heals from the concussion he suffered during the season. Lewis left the door open for a possible return next season.

Footballguys view: If Lewis did return to the Browns he would likely be a backup behind Jerome Harrison. The Browns could decide to use Lewis as a goalline back in order to keep the veteran fresh.

Browns | J. Lewis placed on IR    Wed Dec 2, 07:44 PM

Updating a previous item, Tom Withers, of The Associated Press, reports the Cleveland Browns have placed RB Jamal Lewis (concussion) on Injured Reserve, ending his 2009 season and possibly his career. Lewis announced in November that he planned to retire after this season.

Footballguys view: Lewis could have been one of the great RBs of his era if it wasn't for a lost season in 2001 because of a torn ACL. He still managed a 2,000 yard season two years removed from the injury, and Lewis currently ranks in the top 25 RBs in NFL history, with over 10,000 career rushing yards. Ironically, he finishes his career in a Cleveland Browns uniform, the former identity of the Baltimore Ravens, the team he helped to a Super Bowl championship in his rookie year.

Browns | Lewis could be placed on IR?    Wed Dec 2, 02:25 PM

Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns RB Jamal Lewis (undisclosed) was not participating during the media-access portion of practice Wednesday, Dec. 2, and there is speculation that he could be placed on Injured Reserve. Lewis was replaced by RB Chris Jennings as the starter in Week 12. However, Lewis did enter the game for the second play of the game and led the team in rushing yards.

Footballguys view: Jennings is a decent pickup in deep leagues, but the Browns have struggled to get anything going on offense. We still think Jerome Harrison deserves more playing time, but he can't seem to get out of the doghouse. DeDe Dorsey is reportedly going to sign with Cleveland, so he could be an interesting waiver addition. Cleveland has a good schedule in the fantasy playoffs, but we aren't sold on their offense being able to do anything against anyone except the Lions.

I've made multimultimillions, I think it's time to move up to another step. It's about the money, but it's (also) about what you can instill in a team. A lot of the views I have, the teams I've been on, there's a lot of things I would have done different if I were in that position. Lewis said, "He left on his own terms . . . and I like that. When I came into this league, I modeled (myself) after Jim Brown and I always wanted to follow in his footsteps in everything he did.   Browns | J. Lewis unsure of offense's direction    Mon Nov 2, 02:22 AM

Marla Ridenour, of the Akron Beacon Journal, reports Cleveland Browns RB Jamal Lewis is planning to retire after the 2009 season. Lewis is leading the team's rushing game with 349 yards on the season, but he is averaging only 3.6 yards per carry and has not scored a touchdown. Lewis said he is becoming increasingly baffled about what the team's offense is trying to get done. Lewis said, "At the beginning of training camp, working as hard as we did, buying into everything that's going on, buying into the system, that's what needed to happen. I think that everybody bought in. That's when you did have a real clue as to where we were going and what we were trying to do. But then once things start going, week after week after week after week, it seemed like a blur."
