Bills | Matt Leinart cut    Fri Aug 30, 11:26 AM

The Buffalo Bills released QB Matt Leinart.

Footballguys view: Leinart's return to possible relevance was short-lived. The Bills would rather start an undrafted rookie than put Leinart out there next week.

Bills | Matt Leinart struggles in first game action    Fri Aug 30, 03:54 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Leinart was 3 for 11 for 11 yards and was lifted after just five possessions in a 35-13 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thursday, Aug. 29.

Bills | Matt Leinart signs    Sun Aug 25, 05:00 PM

The Buffalo Bills signed free-agent QB Matt Leinart (Raiders) to an undisclosed deal.

Footballguys view: Leinart will get a lot of play next week, and if EJ Manuel isn't ready to go for week 1, he could open the season as the Bills starting quarterback. It's not impossible that both Leinart and Vince Young start a game in the NFL this year.

Jets | Will work out two QBs    Sun Aug 25, 11:21 AM

The New York Jets are expected to work out free-agent QB Matt Leinart (Raiders) and QB John Beck (Texans).

Footballguys view: If the team feels Geno Smith isn't ready and Mark Sanchez isn't healthy enough to start vs. the Bucs in week 1, one of these two street free agents could be kicking off the 2013 campaign as the Jets starter.

Bills | Will work out two QBs    Sat Aug 24, 09:10 PM

The Buffalo Bills are scheduled to work out free-agent QBs Matt Leinart (Raiders) and John Beck (Texans).

Footballguys view: Haven't Bills fans suffered enough? Leinart and Beck are not the answer for the Bills but they're desperate right now after losing Kevin Kolb to a concussion. Rookie E.J. Manuel is recovering from a minor knee injury but his status for the opening week of the season is up in the air.

Seahawks | Not ready to sign QB    Mon Apr 8, 06:46 PM

The Seattle Seahawks worked out free-agent QBs Tyler Thigpen (Bills), Seneca Wallace (Browns), Matt Leinart (Raiders) and Brady Quinn (Chiefs) Monday, April 8, but will take some time before signing one of them.

Footballguys view: There's no rush for the team to bring another QB into the fold at this time. They are looking for an athletic backup QB since they traded Matt Flynn to the Raiders.

The Seattle Seahawks are scheduled to meet with free-agent QBs Matt Leinart (Raiders), Brady Quinn (Chiefs), Seneca Wallace (Browns) and Tyler Thigpen (Bills). The meetings are expected to include workouts for each quarterback.

Footballguys view: The Seahawks are looking for a backup QB behind Russell Wilson. Wallace or Thigpen would be the best fit because both are athletic and can run an option offense.

Seahawks | Could show interest in two QBs    Sat Apr 6, 01:17 PM

The Seattle Seahawks could show interest in free-agent QBs Brady Quinn (Chiefs) and Matt Leinart (Raiders) to be their backup quarterback.

Footballguys view: Quinn or Leinart would give the team veteran depth at the position they need since trading away Matt Flynn to the Raiders. However, neither would be a great fit to run the read option offense if starter Russell Wilson missed time with an injury.

Seahawks | Matt Leinart could be option    Mon Apr 1, 01:20 PM

The Seattle Seahawks could show interest in free-agent QB Matt Leinart (Raiders) to be their No. 2 quarterback.

Footballguys view: The Seahawks need a backup QB behind starter Russell Wilson but we see Leinart as an odd fit. They may also have interest in Tyler Thigpen, and that move would make more sense because Thigpen is athletic and could run an option offense.

Buccaneers | Matt Leinart unlikely to be FA option    Sun Mar 3, 11:55 AM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers likely will not show interest in Oakland Raiders impending free-agent QB Matt Leinart when free agency begins because his lack of ideal arm strength probably would not fit well in the team's offensive system.

Footballguys view: Leinart should be able to find a backup job somewhere for the right price. However, we don't expect teams to be falling all over themselves to sign the first-round bust.

Raiders | Matt Leinart, Terrelle Pryor split reps     Wed Dec 26, 04:26 PM

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said QBs Matt Leinart and Terrelle Pryor evenly split reps during practice Wednesday, Dec. 26.

Footballguys view: We think Leinart will start for the Raiders in week 17. However, he could have a short leash if he struggles against the Chargers. The team wants to see what they have in Pryor as he's been developing over the last two seasons.

Oakland Raiders QB Matt Leinart (finger) is considered a game-time decision for the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 25. Leinart participated in some drills in practice Wednesday, Aug. 22, with his right index finger taped up.

Footballguys view: If Leinart can't play because of this injury we'll see more from third-string QB Terrelle Pryor. He's been rough this preseason and needs as much work/experience as he can get.

Raiders | Matt Leinart clearly No. 2 QB     Mon Aug 13, 11:14 AM

Oakland Raiders QB Matt Leinart is far ahead of QB Terrelle Pryor on the depth chart as the team's backup quarterback. Leinart has been sharp in camp while Pryor has been inconsistent.

Footballguys view: Pryor is a developmental prospect for the Raiders with high upside, but he's still a long way from a finished product. We're anxious to see how Pryor looks in the preseason, and like him as a lottery ticket pick in super deep dynasty leagues.

Raiders | QB Pryor making positive strides    Sun May 27, 03:19 PM

Vittorio Tafur, from the San Francisco Chronicle, reports Raiders second-year QB Terrelle Pryor is making positive impressions at OTAs. "He has all kinds of talent," Raiders coach Dennis Allen said. "He's not there from a mental standpoint, from a fundamental standpoint, which is true of 99 percent of the young quarterbacks that come into this league. But he's hungry for it and he is working very hard."

Footballguys view: Pryor is the clear cut No. 3 QB on the Raiders this year behind Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. He's been able to work with coaches closely this offseason and is an intriguing prospect in deep dynasty leagues. Pryor is big, athletic, and has a strong arm. He needs to improve his decision making, footwork, and accuracy before he gets a chance at playing time.

Raiders | Will have competition for No. 2 QB job    Thu May 3, 02:21 PM

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said QBs Matt Leinart and Terrelle Pryor will compete for the backup quarterback job during training carmp. The loser of the competition likely would be the No. 3 quarterback.

Footballguys view: If Leinart can't beat out a raw prospect like Pryor then he's best served hanging up his cleats. Pryor is big, athletic, and has a strong arm but he's far from being ready to play as a pro.

Raiders | Still have confidence in Terrelle Pryor     Thu May 3, 09:40 AM

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said the team remains confident in QB Terrelle Pryor becoming a pro quarterback despite the addition of QB Matt Leinart. 'We're always going to try to make moves to do whatever we feel like is going to make this football team be better. And we've brought another quarterback in to compete,' Allen said. 'At the end of the day, just like anything else, we're going to have everybody compete and the best players are going to play and that's how we're going to stack the depth chart up.' Allen added Pryor has all kinds of talent.

Footballguys view: The 2011 Supplemental Draft pick is still very raw and needs more time to develop. We'll see how he looks this year in the preseason before determining where he's at in his development.

Raiders | To sign Matt Leinart    Tue May 1, 06:39 PM

The Oakland Raiders plan to sign free-agent QB Matt Leinart (Texans), according to a league source. Leinart, not QB Terrelle Pryor, is expected to be the backup to QB Carson Palmer.

Footballguys view: Pryor is still considered a developmental QB as he's too raw to rely on as a backup QB at this point. Raiders Offensive Coordinator Greg Knapp was Leinart's quarterbacks coach with the Houston Texans, so the transition to the Raiders shouldn't be that tough for the veteran QB.

Raiders | GM confirms Matt Leinart visit     Mon Apr 30, 09:45 AM

Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said the team will hold a workout for free-agent QB Matt Leinart (Texans). However, McKenzie would not say a signing is imminent. 'What we're doing, we're bringing in Matt Leinart for a tryout. Signing and all of that, that's secondary. But we're bringing him in for a tryout,' McKenzie said.

Footballguys view: It would be too perfect for Leinart to end up with the Raiders. Many QBs have worn the Silver & Black in their final days in the league. Leinart would get to play behind a fellow USC Trojan, QB Carson Palmer. Second-year QB Terrelle Pryor would likely play as the third-string, developmental QB.

Raiders | Matt Leinart would be No. 2 QB     Sat Apr 28, 09:46 AM

If the Oakland Raiders sign free-agent QB Matt Leinart (Texans), as expected, he will serve as the team's No. 2 quarterback. Most people around the league thought QB Terrelle Pryor had the inside track on the team's backup quarterback job. However, a new Raiders front office and coaching staff has targeted changes at the position, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Pryor was seen as a three-year project so it's not surprising that after only one year he would still be the third-string QB. He's got a ton of athleticism, arm strength, and size, but he needs to improve his accuracy and decision making before he ever sees the field.

Texans | Matt Leinart cut    Mon Mar 12, 09:34 PM

The Houston Texans released QB Matt Leinart Monday, March 12.

Footballguys view: The Texans are in the running for QB Peyton Manning but they didn't cut Leinart to make room for him as the move only clears $1.75 million in salary. They cut Leinart because he just can't make it with their team. We can't imagine the market being white hot for Leinart's services.

Texans | Matt Leinart needs surgery    Mon Nov 28, 05:43 PM

Houston Texans QB Matt Leinart (collarbone) will need to have season-ending surgery to fix a fractured collarbone. The surgery will take place within the next week. QB T.J. Yates will start versus the Atlanta Falcons in Week 13, with QB Kellen Clemens as the backup.

Footballguys view: We like Yates, but this is a lot to ask from a late-round rookie. Yates is an athletic, tough, and gritty QB who will go down swinging. His biggest flaw is his decision making as he doesn't go through his progressions quickly and will too often force passes into coverage. We'll see if Houston signs another QB off the street, or if they lure Brett Favre out of retirement.

Texans | Matt Leinart expected to miss season    Sun Nov 27, 04:43 PM

Houston Texans QB Matt Leinart (collarbone) is expected to miss the rest of the season after suffering a broken collarbone in Week 12.

Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub (foot) suffered a significant foot injury in Week 10 and will miss some playing time. Schaub will be wearing a walking boot this week and is scheduled to meet with a foot specialist in the next week.

Footballguys view: The Texans will now turn to Matt Leinart as their starter while Schaub is out. They have a bye in week 11, and return in week 12 against Jacksonville. Hopefully they'll get WR Andre Johnson back from his hamstring injury to help out Leinart.

Houston Texans QBs Matt Leinart and T.J. Yates will split the snaps in the preseason finale Thursday, Sept. 1, against the Minnesota Vikings with QB Matt Schaub being rested.

Footballguys view: There's a chance that Yates wins the job over Leinart as the primary backup behind Schuab. Yates is a tough QB, who will stand in the pocket, take a big hit, and still deliver the football. He also has enough scrambling ability to keep a play alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield.

Seahawks | Battle at quarterback    Wed Jul 27, 01:46 AM

Seattle Seahawks QBs Charlie Whitehurst and newly acquired Tarvaris Jackson are expected to be given the first shot at battling for the team's starting quarterback duties. Jackson has experience in the offense, as he played in the same while with the Minnesota Vikings. They may not be the long-term answer to the quarterback position, as Seattle could revisit their quarterback position after the offseason. Free-agent QB Matt Leinart (Texans) may also be part of the equation in 2011.

Footballguys view: Whitehurst has a head start as he was with Pete Carroll and company last year. Jackson has familiarity with the offense as he worked with Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell in Minnesota. Leinart is yet another Trojan trying to jump start his career. Pete Carroll worked magic with WR Mike Williams last year and will try to get Leinart's pro career back on track.
