Buccaneers | Freeman named starter    Wed Oct 28, 01:46 PM

PewterReport.com reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris announced Wednesday, Oct. 28, that rookie QB Josh Freeman is the team's starting quarterback. He will make the first start of his career against the Green Bay Packers in Week 9. QB Josh Johnson will be the backup, with QB Byron Leftwich serving as the third quarterback on the depth chart.

Our view: We knew this was coming soon. The Bucs have seen enough of Josh Johnson, and now it's time to get Josh Freeman some valuable playing time. Freeman is a big quarterback that reminded some in the scouting community of a young Daunte Culpepper. He has a strong arm, and is hard to bring down, but struggles when he's throwing on the run. This move will likely hurt the fantasy value of all the Bucs skill position players.

Buccaneers | J. Johnson to start Week 4    Mon Sep 28, 12:27 PM

Jim Flynn, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Josh Johnson will start the team's Week 4 game in place of QB Byron Leftwich. Leftwich will be the team's No. 3 quarterback behind Johnson and QB Josh Freeman.

Our view: What an amazing turn of events for the second-year quarterback from San Diego. Johnson came in and moved the offense well on Sunday, but seemed to get a little impatient as the team moved into the red zone. Rookie Josh Freeman is not ready to start yet, but could move into the starting lineup if Johnson doesn't perform well for the Buccaneers.

Buccaneers | Leftwich replaced by J. Johnson Week 3    Sun Sep 27, 05:33 PM

Our view: Leftwich struggled terribly against a Giant defense at much less than full strength and was benched for Josh Johnson late in the game. Tampa Bay may be turning to Josh Freeman sooner than expected.

Rick Stroud, of The St. Petersburg Times, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie QB Josh Freeman takes over as the team's No. 2 quarterback behind starting QB Byron Leftwich.

Our view: Tampa Bay's bye in week 8, and they could easily be 1-6 or 2-5 going into it, giving them a good reason to start Freeman in week 9 vs. Green Bay.

Buccaneers | Leftwich wins starting quarterback job    Sat Aug 29, 10:28 AM

Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris informed the team Saturday, Aug. 29, that QB Byron Leftwich has beat out QB Luke McCown for the starting quarterback job.

Our view: This should help if you've been reluctant to take Antonio Bryant in the sixth or seventh round, because Leftwich is a far better downfield passer than McCown. The running game should have a little more room to operate since the safeties have to honor Leftwich's arm strength.

Morris said he did not know when he will make the announcement.

Buccaneers | Leftwich outperforms McCown Thursday    Fri Aug 28, 12:47 AM

The Associated Press reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Byron Leftwich outperformed QB Luke McCown during the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 27. Leftwich was 9-for-17 for 100 yards while McCown finished 5-for-11 for 38 yards in the game. Both quarterbacks had roughly the same amount of playing time in the game.

Our view: Leftwich fits Jeff Jagodzinski's offensive game plan better, and he's the more experienced QB, so we think making him the starter is the right call.

Buccaneers | QB job Leftwich's to lose?    Wed Aug 26, 08:53 PM

Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports that unless QB Byron Leftwich has a poor outing and Luke McCown has a great one in week three of the preseason, McCown and Josh Johnson will be on the trade block, because the team prefers Josh Freeman as the #2.

Our view: Leftwich is better suited for Jeff Jagodzinski's offense, and he's the more polished QB at this point. We would be surprised if he's not the week 1 starter for the Bucs.

Buccaneers | Team shopping all QBs other than Freeman    Wed Aug 26, 09:37 AM

Jason La Canfora, of the NFL Network, reports on his Twitter feed that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are shopping Byron Leftwich, Luke McCown, and Josh Johnson. La Canfora writes, "Leftwich or McCown could probably be had for a 5-6th rounder, which would end Bucs QB comp."

Our view: You never want a QB competition decided by which QB another team is willing to give up a fifth round pick to get. Rhett Bomar went in the fifth round this year. Still, Antonio Bryant and Kellen Winslow are falling far enough in drafts that you can afford to take the risk that the offense stalls out because of QB woes.

Buccaneers | Leftwich to start Thursday, McCown to play with starters    Mon Aug 24, 05:23 PM

Jim Flynn, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Byron Leftwich will start the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 27, but QB Luke McCown will also see time with the first-team offense during the game. Both quarterbacks will play a quarter and a half.

Our view: It's the all important third week of the preseason, and this should be the final showdown (for now) between Byron Leftwich and Luke McCown. A starter should be named for the regular season after this game, and as of right now Leftwich may have a slight edge. The next two games could also decide the fate of fourth-string QB Josh Johnson. He is extremely talented, but still a year away from challenging for a starting job. The Bucs could decide to once again keep four quarterbacks on the roster because of Johnson's raw ability.

Buccaneers | Leftwich has decent performance Saturday    Sat Aug 22, 09:41 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Byron Leftwich, who is competing with QB Luke McCown for the starting quarterback job, went 6-for-12 for 63 yards in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.

Our view: Leftwich was motivated when going up against his old team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and had an efficient game overall. However, his competitor for the starting job in Tampa, Luke McCown, had a great game throwing for two touchdowns on the night. The competition in Tampa was supposedly going to be decided based on this game, and it looks like Luke McCown may now have the upper hand.

Buccaneers | QB battle decided tonight    Sat Aug 22, 07:51 PM

Stephen Holder, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports that the Buccaneers are expected to name a starting QB later this week, so this is Luke McCown and Byron Leftwich's last chance to win the job tonight against Jacksonville.

Our view: Leftwich got the start and completed two of five for 36 yards on the first drive. The new offense will put an emphasis on throwing downfield in the passing game, so we like Leftwich to come out on top when the starter is named.

Buccaneers | Leftwich takes the lead in QB derby    Sun Aug 16, 07:41 PM

Gary Shelton, from the St. Petersburg Times, reports that after Saturday night the rest of the field is chasing Byron Leftwich. Leftwich showed a little more danger, a little more flair, in the Bucs' preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans. He had a little more electricity, and a little more success. And around him, his team seemed to have just a little more confidence, and just a few more possibilities, than when someone else was steering the ship. No, it wasn't enough to guarantee that he will start when the regular season does, but score Round 1 for Leftwich.

Our view: This race is far from over, but if the season started today we think Byron Leftwich would be the starter. Luke McCown will be the main competition for Leftwich as rookie Josh Freeman looked lost on the field. The Bucs most likely want to sit on the rookie for a year and let him learn the ropes as a backup. The odd man out could be Josh Johnson, but he had a great day in the Bucs first preseason game. If he is cut but the Bucs, his new team will be very happy with his long term prospects.

Buccaneers | Quarterback battle one    Sun Aug 16, 01:02 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Luke McCown went 4 of 8 for 19 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions Saturday, Aug. 15, against the Tennessee Titans. QB Byron Leftwich hit 6 of 14 passing attempts for 61 yards with one touchdown and no interception, while rookie QB Josh Freeman was 5 of 9 for 52 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.

Our view: Staying in line with most reports from Bucs camp, none of the QBs are consistently playing like a starter. Unless one of these guys all of the sudden finds his game in the next few weeks, it could be a long season in Tampa.

Buccaneers | Team won't keep four quarterbacks    Wed Aug 12, 09:20 PM

PewterReport.com notes Tampa Bay had the luxury of keeping four quarterbacks on its 53-man roster last year with Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Luke McCown and Johnson, the team's fifth-round pick in 2008. According to Morris, that won't be the case in 2009 as the team will need to maximize its roster spots. With Luke McCown and Leftwich battling for the starting job and Freeman being the team's first-round pick this year, Johnson may be the odd man out as he has been getting fourth-string reps in practice. "Honestly, I don't see us [taking four quarterbacks]," Morris said. "I see ourselves keeping three, but I don't want to rule anything out. Like I said before, I can only keep 53 [players]. If those four quarterbacks are the best guys on the unit, then I may have to break the rules. We've got to keep the guys on our team that we think will help us win."

Our view: Josh Johnson has NFL ability, but may have to go to another team to prove it. However, if Byron Leftwich doesn't win the starting job the Bucs may decide to let him go because his contract has no guarantees in it.

Buccaneers | Leftwich with the early lead    Sun Aug 9, 08:34 PM

Rick Stroud, from the St. Petersburg Times, reports you probably can't win a starting quarterback job during the first week of practice, but you can lose one. So as we examine the race between Luke McCown and Byron Leftwich --- sorry, Josh Freeman, your time will come soon --- understand that both avoided catastrophe. But Leftwich was better. He made more plays, got the ball in the end zone more consistently and basically converted more believers in the locker room.

Our view: The most important note Stroud points out here is the feeling in the lockerroom. Tampa Bay is a team in transition and the job will eventually go to Josh Freeman, but it could be a while as the team may want to sit him for his first year so he can learn the offense. This race is far from over and may change many times during camp - and during the regular season. Fantasy owners should avoid this situation, even for your backup quarterback until a starter is firmly entrenched.

Buccaneers | McCown to start first preseason game, Leftwich second    Sat Aug 8, 06:27 PM

Scott Reynolds and Jim Flynn, of the Pewter Report, report that QB Luke McCown will start the team's first exhibition game on Saturday, August 15 vs. Tennessee. According to team GM Mark Domenik, Byron Leftwich will then start the second preseason game vs. Jacksonville on August 22.

Our view: The Pewter Report writers stress that the competition is too close to call. With new offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski wanting to commit to the run, we think either QB would only be suitable as a fantasy #3.

Buccaneers | Leftwich is carrying himself with confidence    Fri Aug 7, 09:11 PM

Ira Kaufman, from TBO.com, is reporting on their twitter feed that Byron Leftwich is carrying himself with the look of a man who believes he is winning the QB battle. It's early, but I think he's right.

Our view: Leftwich certainly should be confident. He has the most experience of any of the Buccaneer quarterbacks and is coming off a Super Bowl year with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is competing with Luke McCown for the starting job, but the team could decide to go with rookie Josh Freeman if neither of the veterans impress in preseason.

Buccaneers | QB competition continues    Thu Aug 6, 07:32 PM

Charlie Campbell, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris updated the team's quarterback competition between QB Byron Leftwich and QB Luke McCown. Morris said, "They're having days back and forth [Luke and Byron]. One day Byron looks hot, the other day Luke looks hot. The leadership skills are coming out, the tempo got a lot better." Morris added, "We still have to get to that first game to really get separation because that's when they've really have a chance to get hit."

Our view: This competition should go back and forth all preseason long. If the veterans look bad the team may decide to go with rookie Josh Freeman.

Buccaneers | Will McCown win the starting job by default?    Tue Aug 4, 08:02 PM

According to sources close to the situation, Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Luke McCown may win the team's starting job by default.

Our view: While he has looked better on the field, the team's other quarterbacks - Byron Leftwich and rookie Josh Freeman - have failed to step up. Leftwich has been struggling to make his reads on the field and doesn't appear to be running the offense well.

Buccaneers | McCown opens camp as the starter    Sat Aug 1, 01:03 PM

Pat Yasinskas, from ESPN.com, says read into it what you want because it's only the first day of camp. But Luke McCown worked with the first team and Byron Leftwich with the second team. Rookie Josh Freeman shared the rest of the snaps with Josh Johnson.

Our view: It's only the first day of camp, but McCown will get the first opportunity to be the starting quarterback. Even if the team names McCown or veteran Byron Leftwich the starter at the beginning of the season they may decide to put rookie Josh Freeman in the lineup later in the year if their season is lost.

Anwar Richardson, of The Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QBs Luke McCown and Byron Leftwich are the leading contenders to be the team's starting quarterback, but head coach Raheem Morris is not ruling out going with rookie QB Josh Freeman. McCown and Leftwich not only need to practice well, but they'll need to also stand out during preseason games.

Buccaneers | Leftwich has inside track for QB job?    Sun Jul 26, 11:37 AM

Michael Lombardi, of the National Football Post, reports that "from all indications, Byron Leftwich seems to have the inside track on the starting job. He has a great command, and the locker room is in love with him."

Our view: This directly conflicted with the reports from ESPN's NFL South blogger, Pat Yasinskas, that the job was Luke McCown's to lose. We should have a definitive idea of whose Tampa Bay sources are better after the first week of camp. No matter who wins the job, he probably won't be a QB you want to carry on your fantasy team.

Buccaneers | Starting QB McCown's job to lose?    Fri Jul 24, 08:00 PM

Pat Yasinskas, of ESPN.com reports that based on everything he has heard, the Tampa Bay starting QB is Luke McCown's "to lose."

Our view: This conflicts with earlier reports that had the battle near even, with McCown having a slight edge because of his longer tenure with the team. Even with Yasinskas's report, we wouldn't draft McCown except 16 team or start 2 QB leagues, because he might not hold the job for long, and that's assuming he wins it.
