NFL | Kevin Kolb arrested    Mon Jun 30, 09:06 PM

Free-agent QB Kevin Kolb (Bills) was arrested Saturday, June 28, for boating while intoxicated in Texas, according to a report by 956sports.com.

Footballguys view: First, we're glad nobody was hurt. Second, we wonder if Cedric Benson was along for the ride with him. This arrest won't help the chances of Kolb latching on with a new team in training camp. After recurring concussion issues, Kolb's playing days may be done.

Bills | Release Kevin Kolb    Tue Mar 11, 03:55 PM

The Buffalo Bills released QB Kevin Kolb Tuesday, March 11.

Footballguys view: Kolb's NFL career has been cut short by concussions. He's still not cleared from the concussion he suffered in the 2013 preseason.

Bills | Kevin Kolb due roster bonus    Mon Mar 10, 12:09 PM

The Buffalo Bills will have to make a decision on the future of QB Kevin Kolb, who is due a $1 million roster bonus this week. 'It's a tricky situation,' general manager Doug Whaley said. 'We're going to be very careful how we handle this, and the foremost consideration in the whole equation is him being healthy.'

Bills | Kevin Kolb still going through process    Thu Feb 20, 07:27 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said QB Kevin Kolb (concussion) is still going through the medical process, and the team is waiting for him to undergo another checkup. 'What I was told is there is a process and the medical process, he's still going through it and we're waiting for him to come back for another medical check, which is coming up,' Marrone said. Marrone said he believes Kolb will undergo another checkup during the first week in March.

Footballguys view: With so many concussion problems, we may not see Kolb play another down in the NFL.

Bills | Unsure if Kevin Kolb will play    Fri Feb 14, 02:07 PM

The Buffalo Bills are unsure if QB Kevin Kolb (concussion) will play in 2014, according to head coach Doug Marrone. "He's under contract and I'm not aware of really what exactly is going on right now, whether he's planning to come back, whether he's not going to come back," Marrone said. "I have not been informed of anything to that nature."

Footballguys view: He has a $3.6 million cap number in 2014. If Kolb wants to continue playing then it's unlikely to be with the Bills. His concussion problems have only worsened over his pro career.

Bills | Kevin Kolb expected to be cut    Mon Feb 3, 02:03 PM

The Buffalo Bills are expected to release QB Kevin Kolb this offseason, because he is scheduled to have a $3.6 million salary cap figure in 2014. Kolb would be the backup to QB EJ Manuel if he remains on the team.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. The Bills have Manuel as their quarterback of the future. They may sign a veteran free agent for insurance in case Manuel gets banged up again.

The Buffalo Bills have placed QB Kevin Kolb (concussion), FB Drew Smith (undisclosed) and WR Brad Smith (rib) on Injured Reserve, ending their 2013 seasons.

Footballguys view: This is likely the end of Kolb's career. He made over 33 million dollars over the last four years, but this is still a hard way to see a career end.

Bills | Jeff Tuel could start in Week 1    Sun Aug 25, 08:16 PM

The prospect of Buffalo Bills QB Jeff Tuel starting the regular season opener against the New England Patriots Sept. 8 looms as a distinct possibility with QB EJ Manuel (knee) recovering from surgery, and QB Kevin Kolb (concussion) facing a lengthy absence following another concussion.

Footballguys view: Tuel would be the most familiar with the offense of the healthy QBs on the roster if EJ Manuel can't go in week 1. Suffice to say, the Patriots might be the best option of any D/ST in week 1. They also get the Jets in week 2.

Bills | Fear Kevin Kolb's concussion might end career    Sun Aug 25, 08:15 PM

The Buffalo Bills are concerned that the QB Kevin Kolb's (concussion) might be career-ending, and they're proceeding with that in mind.

Footballguys view: Kolb has struggled with concussions in the past, and the league is more sensitive to the issue than it ever has been before. He can be dropped in 2 QB and QB flex leagues.

Bills | Will add a quarterback    Sat Aug 24, 08:37 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said the team will look to sign a quarterback because of the injuries to QB Kevin Kolb (head) and QB EJ Manuel (knee).

Bills | Kevin Kolb starts, EJ Manuel looks good    Fri Aug 16, 11:22 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb made the start in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 16, against the Minnesota Vikings, completing 13 of his 21 passes for 111 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Rookie QB EJ Manuel replaced him and completed 10 of 12 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions.

Footballguys view: Manuel continues to show impressive poise and leadership on the football field. We like his willingness to challenge the defense vertically and Manuel does a good job of quickly reading the entire field on most pass plays.

Bills | Kevin Kolb focused on playing    Fri Aug 16, 02:36 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb gets the start in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 16, against the Minnesota Vikings, and he is focused on playing well and not so much the battle with QB EJ Manuel for the starting job. 'I just think you can't focus on that stuff,' said Kolb. 'You have to focus on what can I do as a quarterback? How do I get better? And you've got to be coachable.'

Footballguys view: Kolb has the experience edge over Manuel but may have fallen behind in this competition due to his minor knee injury. We'll see if he can make a positive impression during the rest of the preseason. We like the way Manuel looked in the Bills' preseason debut. The rookie has a strong arm and did a good job of manipulating the defense with his eyes.

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said Wednesday, Aug. 14, that QB Kevin Kolb will start the preseason game Friday, Aug. 16, against the Minnesota Vikings.

Footballguys view: Just a reminder that EJ Manuel doesn't have the job locked up... yet. Unless Manuel regresses from his preseason week 1 performance, he should be the man to open the season, and present a nice upside QB pick very late in fantasy drafts.

Bills | Will name starting QB shortly    Tue Aug 13, 08:10 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said Tuesday, Aug. 13, that if a clear quarterback winner does not emerge, he will name a starter 10 to 12 days before the regular season opener. QB EJ Manuel looked good in his preseason debut Sunday, Aug. 11, and QB Kevin Kolb (knee) has been banged up and dealing with personal issues, too.

Footballguys view: Manuel did a good job of manipulating the defense with his eyes. He also wasn't afraid to make tight throws and was able to move the team with ease. Manuel has upside because of his strong arm, size, and scrambling ability.

Bills | Kevin Kolb banged up    Tue Aug 13, 08:15 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb (knee) is still walking with a slight limp and had trouble moving around the pocket Monday, Aug. 12, due to a sore knee.

Footballguys view: It looks like we could see more from rookie QB E.J. Manuel in the Bills' second preseason game. Manuel showed well in the team's first game and did a good job moving the team. We like the way he would make quick decisions and use his eyes to manipulate the defense.

Bills | Unsure about Kevin Kolb's status    Mon Aug 12, 04:46 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said he is not sure if QB Kevin Kolb (knee) will be able to play in the team's second preseason game.

Footballguys view: Kolb suffered a minor knee injury when he slipped on a wet mat earlier in training camp. He's got plenty of experience and doesn't need a ton of reps in the preseason. However, Kolb is competing with rookie E.J. Manuel to be the starting QB this year. He needs to get back on the playing field if he wants to win the job.

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said QB Kevin Kolb (knee) will be a game-time decision for the team's preseason game Sunday, Aug. 11. Marrone said Kolb could serve as the emergency quarterback.

Footballguys view: The Bills need to see what they have in rookies EJ Manuel and Jeff Tuel while Kolb has proven to be exactly what we thought he was - relatively unimpressive - so even if he's cleared to go, we'll get a lot longer look at the rookies and less of Kolb.

Bills | Kevin Kolb expected to practice    Fri Aug 9, 03:04 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb (knee) participated in the team's walkthrough Friday, Aug. 9, and is expected to participate in evening practice.

Footballguys view: Kolb slipped on a wet rubber mat last week and has been dealing with a minor knee injury ever since. He's competing with rookie E.J. Manuel (Florida State) to be the team's starter in 2013. Even if Kolb wins the job in camp we could see the Bills make the change to Manuel sometime this year as he is their QB of the future.

Bills | Kevin Kolb could be back on Monday    Mon Aug 5, 01:46 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb (knee) could return as early as Monday, Aug. 5, after missing Sunday's session. Kolb hurt his left knee a day earlier after slipping on a wet rubber mat.

Footballguys view: Kolb is competing with 2013 first-round pick E.J. Manuel to be the team's starter. He can't afford to miss any time in what some feel is a close competition. Manuel is seen as the QB of the future and could start eventually no matter who wins the job initially.

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said QB Kevin Kolb (knee) is considered day-to-day after he slipped on a rubber mat and tweaked his knee prior to practice Saturday, Aug. 3.

Footballguys view: The injury is considered minor at this time. Any missed time hurts Kolb as he's competing with first-round pick E.J. Manuel (Florida State) to be the team's starting QB.

Bills | Happy with Kevin Kolb    Wed Jul 31, 08:09 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said Wednesday, July 31, that while QB Kevin Kolb needs to make better decisions, but so far the team is pleased with his performance in training camp. 'We are very happy with Kevin. He's done a nice job, it's the execution where he wants to go. Does a good job,' Marrone said.

Footballguys view: Kolb has the experience edge over rookie E.J. Manuel (Florida State). The veteran could begin the season as the starter but may be on a short leash this year. The team feels Manuel is their QB of the future and it's only a matter of time before he takes over as the starter.

Bills | EJ Manuel works with first team    Wed Jul 31, 01:14 PM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel worked with the first-team offense during practice Wednesday, July 31, after spending most of his time with the second unit to begin training camp. QB Kevin Kolb led the first unit for the final two 11-on-11 periods, however.

Footballguys view: We'll see this rotation at QB continue for the Bills. Manuel has the athleticism and arm strength edge over Kolb. However, Kolb is the seasoned veteran and his experience could put him at the top of the depth chart to begin the season. Even if Kolb is the week one starter we should see Manuel take over at some point during the year.

Bills | QB talking up Robert Woods    Tue Jul 30, 01:56 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb has been praising rookie WR Robert Woods. Kolb says Woods has been impressive, including his route running patience and savvy. 'Stud. I mean, legitimately a stud,' Kolb said Monday, July 29. 'I've bragged on him a lot in the last two days and really through camp.'

Footballguys view: Kolb has been talking up Woods for good reason. The rookie out of USC is a fantastic route runner and has strong hands. Woods has the concentration to make difficult catches seem routine and knows how to find soft spots to get open. He's competing for the starting job opposite Stevie Johnson.

Bills | Coach has timetable for naming starting QB    Mon Jul 29, 03:04 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said he likely will name the starting quarterback around 10 days before the start of the regular season. Marrone did not say whether QB Kevin Kolb or QB EJ Manuel will start the first preseason game.

Footballguys view: The competition should last all the way up until that deadline. Kolb is the experienced veteran but Manuel was the team's 2013 first-round pick and seen as the QB of the future. If Kolb begins the season as the starter there's no guarantee he'll hold onto the job for the entire year.

Bills | Kevin Kolb takes more reps    Mon Jul 29, 08:25 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb had more repetitions under center than rookie QB EJ Manuel, but not considerably more, the first day of camp Sunday, July 28.

Bills | Kevin Kolb, EJ Manuel to split reps    Sat Jul 27, 12:09 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said QB Kevin Kolb and EJ Manuel will split reps with the first-team offense once training camp begins.

Footballguys view: This is a QB competition we could see last through training camp. Kolb has the experience edge but Manuel is more athletic and has a stronger arm. Even if Kolb wins the job to start the season we should see Manuel eventually. He's the team's QB of the future and has franchise QB upside.

Bills | QB will be decided before season starts    Fri Jul 12, 01:06 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone will probably decide whether Kevin Kolb or EJ Manuel will start at quarterback by the close of the second preseason game, or maybe the third preseason game at the latest. "As a coach the earlier it can get done the better," Marrone said.

Footballguys view: This will be a heated QB competition early in camp and fantasy owners need to monitor this closely. Kolb has the edge in terms of experience but Manuel is seen as the QB of the future and may take over sooner rather than later. We love that Manuel is a football junkie and doesn't shy away from competition. However, he regularly made one read then took off to run in college. He'll have to speed up (and continue through) his progressions to fully develop as a pro passer. Manuel's rushing ability will improve his fantasy potential.

Bills | Unlikely to add another QB    Fri Jul 5, 03:31 PM

The Buffalo Bills likely will not sign another quarterback before training camp because they want to give QBs Kevin Kolb and EJ Manuel as many reps as possible during camp.

Footballguys view: The Bills have a QB competition that could last through the entire preseason. Kolb has the experience advantage but Manuel is seen as the QB of the future.

Bills | Kevin Kolb does not think experience is an advantage    Fri Jul 5, 12:20 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb said he believes not believe his experience in the NFL gives him an edge in the quarterback competition with QB EJ Manuel. 'I wouldn't say it's an advantage against EJ, but it's an advantage for me personally to be able to lean back on those type of things and those type of situations,' Kolb said. 'You don't have stay up at night worrying about things that I did when I was a young player.'

Footballguys view: Kolb does have an edge in the competition because of his experience and may begin the season as the starter. However, Manuel is seen as the QB of the future and could be the starter at some point his year. Manuel is raw as a passer and needs to do a better job of reading defenses before taking off to run.

Bills | Kevin Kolb focused on personal game    Wed Jul 3, 04:03 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb said he is not focused on the quarterback competition with QB EJ Manuel, but rather his own personal game as he learns a new offense. "Me personally I'm not even concerned with it," he said. "I haven't even thought about it really and that's the honest truth because I have so much to address personally as a player coming into a new system. I know EJ probably does as well being a rookie. That's kind of the way I would feel most guys are approaching it right now."

Bills | Kevin Kolb ready for quarterback competition    Wed Jul 3, 03:27 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb said all quarterback competitions are different, and that the competition later this month with QB EJ Manuel will give him a unique perspective. "They are all definitely different," said Kolb of the quarterback competitions he's been a part of. "This one right now we're all new to the system, so we're trying to just pick it up from our own game standpoint. Just trying to pick it up mentally, trying to pick it up physically. Making sure we're on our own P's and Q's and making sure our details are right."

Footballguys view: Kolb has decent athleticism and a good arm for a quick strike offense like the one head coach Doug Marrone and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett ran at Syracuse last year. What he doesn't have is the dangerous running ability that first round pick EJ Manuel has. Since Marrone is tied to Manuel, he'll probably err on the side of starting him.

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone has praised rookie QB EJ Manuel during organized team activities. 'From my standpoint ... EJ Manuel has done better (as a rookie) than any of the other organizations I've been a part of,' Marrone said.

Footballguys view: Good news for the rookie here. Manuel is competing with veteran Kevin Kolb to be the team's starter in 2013. He has a long way to go and may not begin the season as the starter. However, he's the franchise QB of the future and may take over at some point during this season.

Bills | EJ Manuel likes new offense    Mon May 20, 01:14 PM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel said it has been easy to pick up the team's offense, which he said is less complicated than the system he learned at Florida State. 'The funny thing is it's easier to learn than the offense I had at Florida State,' he said. 'It's a true West Coast-type progression offense. That's really what I wanted when I was coming through the pre-draft process. I wanted something that I could just go in and say 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, check it down and run it. That's it, it's that simple. I love it.' Manuel has spent extensive time working with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

Footballguys view: Manuel fits the design of the Marrone offense perfectly. It's an aggressive design featuring downfield passing and some option plays for an athletic quarterback. Manuel is competing with Kevin Kolb to be the team's starter this year.

Buffalo Bills QB Tarvaris Jackson received the first snaps during organized team activities Monday, May 13. He was followed by QB Kevin Kolb and EJ Manuel.

Footballguys view: Don't read too much into this. New Bills head coach Doug Marrone said we should expect the rotation to change daily. We'll be surprised if Jackson ends up the starter at the beginning of the regular season. Rookie E.J. Manuel is considered the favorite to win that job.

Bills | Rookie QB Manuel improved his deep passing    Fri May 3, 04:28 PM

QB E.J. Manuel, the Bills first-round pick, improved his deep passing numbers in 2012. He had a completion rate of 49.2% on passes 20 plus yards downfield, compared to a rate of 34.7% in 2011. Manuel had 10 more completions on such throws (30) in 2012 than he did in the previous two seasons combined (20).

Footballguys view: Downfield passing is a hallmark of the Doug Marrone system. The Bills drafted the QB with arguably the highest upside in the 2013 NFL draft. He's incredibly athletic, has a strong arm, and is known as a hard worker. We love Manuel's value in dynasty leagues and he could perform like a low end QB2 in re-draft leagues this year. He'll compete with veteran Kevin Kolb for the starting job.

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone indicated QBs EJ Manuel, Kevin Kolb and Tarvaris Jackson will split reps with the first-team offense once offseason workouts begin.

Footballguys view: We'd be shocked if Manuel doesn't win the starting job outright in camp. He's more athletic and has a stronger arm than Kolb does. Manuel will be able to run the Marrone because of his natural skill set. He'll only have to get used to the speed of the game and start making quicker reads as a passer.

Bills | Kevin Kolb thinks up-tempo offense will help players    Sat Apr 20, 12:39 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb said the team's up-tempo offense will help the younger players because they will not have to think as much. 'The best thing to me that tempo does,' Kolb said, 'is that it relaxes the mind of the players and they can just do what they've been doing their entire life. A big problem, especially for young players at this level, is they slow down because they're thinking too much. If you get them into a no-huddle, you get them into a quick style of offense, then they're just reading and reacting. When you're reading and reacting you're playing at your highest level and that's when you make a lot of great plays.'

Footballguys view: The new Doug Marrone system will emphasize tempo and feature a downfield passing game. Kolb is considered the front runner at the starting QB job right now, but they could add a player like Geno Smith (West Virginia) or Ryan Nassib (Syracuse) to the mix in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Bills | Kevin Kolb doesn't think he gets sacked too much    Wed Apr 10, 03:32 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Kevin Kolb does not think he gets sacked too much, and talked about how he should not have that label placed on him. 'No, because the label only came from really my stint in Arizona,' Kolb said at Monday's introductory news conference at One Bills Drive. 'When I was in Philly for however many games I started -- I don't even know -- I can remember going multiple games without maybe getting hit four or five times.'

Footballguys view: Kolb was sacked too much in Arizona because their Offensive Line is poor. The Bills don't have that much better of a unit and we may see him struggle with pressure in 2013.

Bills | QB still an option in draft    Tue Apr 9, 11:14 AM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said the addition of QB Kevin Kolb does not mean the team will not look at quarterback prospects in the NFL Draft. 'I do not think it really is going to change the philosophy on the draft,' Marrone said. 'I think that when the position comes whatever is best for our team to get better I think we will go ahead and choose that player whoever it may be. I think that rather than trying to, and I do not want to speak for Buddy (Nix) or anyone else in the organization, rather than trying to reach or go somewhere that you do not want to go you bring the best players you can bring in and you make those guys compete. You are a better football team.'

Footballguys view: Not only is it still an option, we actually expect them to select a QB in the draft. The Bills need a QB of the future as Kolb is only a temporary fix. They could add Ryan Nassib (Syracuse) in the first- or second-round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Nassib knows the system and knows coach Marrone from their days together at Syracuse.

'For me it was just straight, 'Hey, how can I go win, how can I go be successful.'' The Bills have the longest active postseason drought in the league at 13 consecutive seasons.

Buffalo Bills QBs Kevin Kolb and Tarvaris Jackson may compete for one roster spot during training camp if the team drafts a quarterback that they believe can be their franchise quarterback.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. In fact, we expect the Bills to add a potential franchise QB via the 2013 NFL Draft. A guy like Geno Smith (West Virginia) could be an option in the first-round, while a player like Ryan Nassib (Syracuse) may be a better fit in the second-round.
