Cowboys | Jon Kitna reached out to team    Wed Dec 25, 03:14 PM

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said QB Jon Kitna reached out the team when he learned the team was looking to sign a quarterback.

Footballguys view: Kitna is a savvy veteran who isn't going to be rattled if he's thrust into the lineup. The Cowboys may be without Tony Romo this weekend against the Eagles. That means Kyle Orton should be the starter. Kitna will serve as his primary backup.

Cowboys | Two could miss rest of season    Sat Nov 26, 05:08 PM

Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said he is not sure if QB Jon Kitna (back) or FB Tony Fiammetta (illness) will be able to play again this season. The team has still not been able to determine the origin of Fiammetta's illness but he has been experiencing nausea when he has tried to practice. Kitna's back has not been responding to treatment.

Footballguys view: If Kitna is shut down for the season then we could see the Cowboys add a veteran QB through free agency. They did put in a bid for Kyle Orton when he hit the waiver wire. The Cowboys want competition for the backup job with third-year QB Stephen McGee.

Cowboys | May look to add QB    Fri Nov 25, 01:42 PM

The Dallas Cowboys may consider signing a quarterback if QB Jon Kitna's (back) back injury does not improve in the near future.

Footballguys view: They put in a claim for Kyle Orton, at least partially because of Kitna's injury woes. Tony Romo is healthy now, but he hasn't been the most durable QB over the years. This is a sign that the team doesn't totally trust Stephen McGee yet.

Cowboys | Jon Kitna returns to practice     Thu Aug 18, 10:41 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Jon Kitna (back) returned to practice Thursday, Aug. 18, after missing two days with a lower back strain.

Cowboys | Jon Kitna has sore back    Tue Aug 16, 02:07 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Jon Kitna (back) is dealing with a sore lower back and it is unknown if he will practice Tuesday, Aug. 16. Head coach Jason Garrett said Kitna is day-to-day.

Footballguys view: Kitna is a seasoned veteran and doesn't need as many reps in the preseason as third-string QB Stephen McGee. We'll see more from Tony Romo this week, and then the team will hand the ball over to McGee. He looked good in the game against the Broncos and could be a solid backup QB behind Romo if Kitna's health becomes an issue.

Cowboys | Jon Kitna entrenched as primary backup    Mon Jul 4, 02:00 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Jon Kitna is believed to be entrenched as the primary backup quarterback entering the season.

Footballguys view: Kitna has more left in the tank than Brad Johnson did when he was backing up Tony Romo. He played well last season when Romo was hurt, and there's no reason to think he wouldn't do the same if called upon this year.

Cowboys | McGee the future backup behind Romo    Mon May 23, 01:10 PM

Charean Williams, from the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, reports with no selection of a QB in the 2011 NFL Draft the Cowboys have clearly shown a commitment to Stephen McGee as the future long-term backup behind Tony Romo.

Footballguys view: McGee has flashed some playmaking ability during the preseason but is not going to beat out Jon Kitna for the primary backup job this season. We like his upside as a developmental quarterback because of his toughness, football intelligence, and athleticism.

Cowboys | Lockout 'big setback' for backup QB McGee    Sat May 21, 12:35 PM

Rainer Sabin, from the Dallas Morning News, reports that in a recent interview Cowboys backup QB Stephen McGee called the lockout a 'big setback' for his progress this year. McGee is set to be the third-string QB once again behind Tony Romo and Jon Kitna.

Footballguys view: McGee has flashed decent playmaking ability, but is not ready to challenge Kitna for the primary backup position behind Romo. He should be relegated to third-string duty once again this year. We'd like to see him get more of an opportunity to prove himself, and are intrigued by his skill set.

Cowboys | Martellus Bennett supports Jon Kitna    Tue Apr 5, 03:01 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Martellus Bennett said he hopes QB Jon Kitna receives a chance to compete with QB Tony Romo for the starting job next year, according to ESPNDallas.com's Tim MacMahon. 'I loved playing with Kitna,' Bennett said. 'Kitna is one of my favorite people to play with. Just being out there on the field with that guy just makes you play even harder. He made some things happen in limited time, so I think if he got a longer chance, he'd be able to do more.' The team's coaches have no plans to have a quarterback competition.

Footballguys view: Uh oh! If Bennett feels like this, then there's a chance that more players on the Cowboys feel like this too. Romo may not have the full support of his tight end, but he'll line up under center as the starter unless he's injured again.

Cowboys | Stephen McGee preparing to start    Tue Dec 28, 12:23 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Stephen McGee might get his first NFL start in Week 17 against the Philadelphia Eagles, reports David Moore, of The Dallas Morning News. QB Jon Kitna (oblique) missed the second half of the Week 16 game against the Arizona Cardinals Saturday, Dec. 25, and is uncertain for the regular season finale.

Footballguys view: Stephen McGee is an athletic quarterback who ran a couple of different systems during his time at Texas A&M. He ran a pro set, but also ran the option in college after the Aggies made a coaching change. McGee has good upside, and could develop into a quality starter someday because of his arm strength and athleticism.
