Bengals | Jermaine Gresham could get starting job early    Mon Jul 19, 06:14 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Jermaine Gresham is expected to get the starting job if he reports to training camp within the first three days because he performed well during offseason workouts, reports The Cincinnati Enquirer's Joe Reedy. TE Reggie Kelly could get the starting job if Gresham has a prolonged holdout or if Gresham takes a significant step back.

Footballguys view: Gresham was the most talented tight end in the 2010 NFL Draft, and could be exactly what the team is looking for. The Bengals have tried for years (Ben Utecht, Chase Coffman) to upgrade the position and now finally have an elite level playmaker. Gresham can line up in the slot or as an in-line tight end, has strong hands, and is dangerous running routes over the middle.

'Reggie tells me what to do in this formation. What to do on this play. How to block this level right here. He tells me things you wouldn't expect to know as a rookie, but he's already done it,' Gresham said.

Bengals | Reggie Kelly hopes to shake off rust before training camp    Sun May 16, 01:14 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Reggie Kelly (Achilles') had a strength test on his injured leg in December that showed his injured leg is 100 percent healthy, reports Joe Reedy, of The Cincinnati Enquirer. Kelly would like to run routes and work with the team during OTAs or their June minicamp to knock off some rust before training camp. He will, however, take it slow and not rush things, as he realizes it is going to take some time to get into football shape.

Bengals | TE Coffman ready to compete    Fri May 14, 06:47 PM

Carlos "Big C" Holmes, from the Dayton Daily News, reports a lack of production from the tight end position last season provoked the Cincinnati Bengals into addressing that area heavily this offseason. They picked Jermaine Greshman in the first round in last month's NFL draft, they brought back Daniel Coats (who dropped passes like they were hot) and on Thursday, May 13, they re-signed veteran Reggie Kelly. So where does that leave second-year tight end Chase Coffman, last year's third-round pick from Missouri? Coffman will have to battle for a roster spot. "The tight end position is up in the air right now," Coffman said in a phone interview. "I'm trying to go out there and win a starting job. Hopefully, I can. I want to be able to help our team win some games."

Footballguys view: Coffman has now been pushed further down the pecking order with all the additions the Bengals have made to the passing game. He's not a traditional in-line tight end, but is a "move" tight end who can work over the middle of the field. Coffman is unlikely to see much playing time because of the talent in front of him.

Bengals | Reggie Kelly re-signed    Thu May 13, 11:59 AM

The Cincinnati Bengals have announced they have re-signed unrestricted free-agent TE Reggie Kelly. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Kelly is the veteran tight end the Bengals wanted to keep around, but his playing time will dramatically decrease this season. Cincinnati selected TE Jermaine Gresham in the first-round of the 2010 NFL Draft and he's likely going to be their starter at the position. Gresham is a good two-way tight end, and thus should not come off the field that often. Because of his reliable hands he should become a trusted target of QB Carson Palmer.

The Cincinnati Bengals may bring free-agent TE Reggie Kelly back to serve as a mentor to the team's younger tight ends, reports Bengals.com. Offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said that door may still be open.

Footballguys view: Kelly is a fine blocker, something that first-round Jermaine Gresham needs to work on a lot before he is a viable two-way TE.

Bengals | Kelly placed on IR    Wed Aug 5, 08:19 PM

Joe Reedy, from the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports TE Reggie Kelly has been placed on injured reserve, thus ending his 2009 season. "He's been very durable and played through some injuries," said coach Marvin Lewis of Kelly. "That's the challenge of coaching, to look and see what our best opportunities are to replace Reggie's snaps and his influence."

Footballguys view: Kelly is an 11-year veteran and underwent surgery in Cincinnati to repair a ruptured left Achilles tendon, which he suffered during a morning practice on Monday. The Bengals TE position has been snake bit recently with injuries to Kelly, Utecht, and Daniel Coats. Rookie TE Chase Coffman has also been slowed by an injury as well.
