Packers | Two QBs to try out at minicamp    Mon May 10, 03:32 PM

Free-agent QB Kurt Benkert (Falcons) and QB Chad Kelly (Colts) will participate in the Green Bay Packers rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Benkert is a tall pocket passer who can spray passes all over the field. Kelly has talent but has never played up to his potential. The arm strength is there, and he's mobile enough to throw on the run or pick up yards with his legs. Both quarterbacks are doing what they can just to stay in the league.

Colts | Chad Kelly waived    Wed Sep 18, 04:55 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Chad Kelly was waived Wednesday, Sept. 18, after serving a two-game suspension to open the season.

Footballguys view: Kelly is now looking for another team to take a chance on him. The Colts have Brian Hoyer as their backup to Jacoby Brissett so they didn't need Kelly anymore. Kelly has a big arm and is athletic, but his off-field reputation cost him his spot with the Broncos last year. A numbers crunch sees the Colts move on from him but there should be a team or two interested in Kelly's services.

Colts | Chad Kelly shows signs    Fri Aug 30, 09:25 AM

Indianapolis Colts QB Chad Kelly was 13-for-16 for 138 yards, no touchdowns and an interception in the preseason finale Thursday, Aug. 29. He also rushed three times for 20 yards and a touchdown.

Footballguys view: Kelly gave the Colts zero reasons to add Brandon Weeden or Matt Cassel or Brock Osweiler. He is an exciting quarterback prospect who could give him a strong backup with future starter potential in the event that they are unwilling to pay Jacoby Brissett next year.

Colts | Chad Kelly signs with Colts    Mon May 20, 09:49 AM

Free-agent QB Chad Kelly (Broncos) signed an undisclosed deal with the Indianapolis Colts Monday, May 20. DT Jordan Thompson was waived.

Footballguys view: Kelly's career has been a wild one in the NFL. He was 'Mr. Irrelevant' as the final pick in the 2017 NFL draft, then he worked his way up to be the primary backup to Case Keenum with the Broncos, then he was booted off the team after an off field incident after a Halloween party. Kelly was out of football for about half of the year as he dealt with his court case. Now, he'll try to make an impression with the Colts...likely as a third-string quarterback behind Andrew Luck and Jacoby Brissett.

Colts | Chad Kelly visiting for tryout    Fri May 3, 12:44 PM

Free-agent QB Chad Kelly will try out for the Indianapolis Colts over the weekend of Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5, at the team's rookie minicamp.

Footballguys view: Kelly looked like he might actually start last year for the Broncos when Case Keenum continued to struggle. Instead, he was kicked off the team after an incident where he stumbled into someone's house inebriated after a party. Kelly has a big arm and is athletic, but there's always something off the field holding him back. We'll see if he can latch on with the Colts. Head coach Frank Reich is a former teammate of Kelly's uncle, former Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly.

Colts | Indianapolis interested in Chad Kelly?    Sun Apr 28, 10:39 AM

The Indianapolis Colts met with free-agent QB Chad Kelly (Broncos) several weeks ago but the team has not decided whether to sign him, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Footballguys view: Kelly's uncle Jim is tight with Colts head coach Frank Reich. It's time for the Colts to make backup quarterback plans for next year, when Jacoby Brissett will likely sign a big deal to compete to start somewhere. Kelly could work if he keeps on the straight and narrow.

Broncos | Chad Kelly facing release?    Tue Oct 23, 03:00 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly could be released following his arrest after meeting with general manager John Elway. All options are on the table, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: There were reports swirling that the Broncos were close to moving on from Case Keenum and now that is not going to be the case. Kelly had been staying out of trouble but he fell in the draft a couple of years ago due to off field concerns. The league is investigating this matter as Kelly was arrested on early Tuesday morning for first degree criminal trespassing.

Broncos | Chad Kelly arrested    Tue Oct 23, 01:55 PM

Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 23, and charged with first-degree criminal trespassing, the Englewood (Colo.) Police Department said in a news release.

Footballguys view: There was no alcohol found in the Kelly's system. Off field issues caused Kelly to fall to the last pick in the 2017 NFL draft but the Broncos decided to give him a chance. Buzz was building about the team actually giving him a shot but that is now over as their trust has to be shaken. Kelly will be lucky to stay with the team no matter the result of this arrest and investigation by authorities and the league.

Broncos | Chad Kelly the backup    Sun Aug 19, 12:42 AM

Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly has 'earned' the right to be the No. 2 quarterback, head coach Vance Joseph said Saturday, Aug. 18.

Footballguys view: Kelly has vastly outplayed Paxton Lynch and might even get himself in the conversation to start before his rookie contract is over if his development takes off. Deep dynasty league players should monitor his development. If Case Keenum goes down, we'll get a good look at where Kelly is in his development.

Broncos | Paxton Lynch, Chad Kelly struggling?    Fri Aug 3, 02:14 AM

The Denver Broncos could look into signing a veteran backup if QBs Paxton Lynch and Chad Kelly don't start showing more in training camp, according to ESPN's Jeff Legwold.

Footballguys view: Lynch hasn't developed after being a first round pick, and Kelly looks like a Mr. Irrelevant in his first healthy camp. The Broncos aren't the only team in need of an upgrade at backup quarterback.

Broncos | Chad Kelly may be No. 2 QB    Fri May 25, 08:31 PM

Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly will compete with QB Paxton Lynch for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp, according to general manager John Elway. Kelly and Lynch has been splitting snaps evenly with the second-team offense during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Somebody get our guy Cecil Lammey smelling salts, because he probably about fainted hearing the Broncos might get a little outlaw country under center this year. Kelly has all the tools you might want, but injury concerns as well as attitude and off field issues killed his value in the 2017 NFL Draft. But if he has his head on straight, he could end up being the long term answer for the Broncos at quarterback.

Broncos | Chad Kelly working out with Phil Simms    Thu Feb 22, 12:57 AM

Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly has been working out under the supervision of retired QB Phil Simms. The second-year quarterback is now healthy after being out for his entire rookie season due to pre-existing injuries and is preparing for his chance to compete for the starting job in Denver.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are going to kick all the tires in the tire store, and Kelly has a lot of upside on the field. Off the field, he's considered a wild card, which is the nice way of saying "he has issues." If he can prove he's past those and can control himself, while showing he is healthy and competent on the field, he could leapfrog up the chart, something our own Cecil Lammey has talked about in the past.

Broncos | Chad Kelly to be ready to throw during OTAs    Thu Feb 8, 01:02 AM

Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly (wrist) will be fully healed and 'ready to throw' by the time organized team activities begin.

Footballguys view: Given the uncertainty at quarterback, he has as good a shot as anyone to get the starting job. Assuming the team doesn't bring in Kirk Cousins.

Broncos | Two Broncos placed on IR    Mon Nov 6, 03:49 PM

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt (knee) and QB Chad Kelly (wrist) were placed on the season-ending Reserve/Injured list Monday, Nov. 6.

Footballguys view: Butt just wasn't healthy enough to make it onto the field after suffering a knee injury in Michigan's bowl game. We love his upside in dynasty leagues as a Jason Witten-like prospect for the Broncos if he can ever regain his pre-injury form. Kelly is a long shot to ever make it in the NFL, but he's got the bloodlines (Hall of Fame uncle Jim Kelly) and the skill set to be a starter in the league.

Broncos | Chad Kelly unlikely to be activated    Sat Nov 4, 03:37 PM

Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly (wrist) likely will remain on the Non-Football Injury list because the team does not want to keep four quarterback on their active roster.

Footballguys view: Kelly actually practiced with the team this week. He was firing 70 yards downfield effortlessly (according to our very own Cecil Lammey), but Kelly looked raw in practice after missing so much time due to injury. The Broncos could give Kelly a redshirt season this year and then see what he can do in 2018. Kelly is a longshot to ever play meaningful snaps in the NFL, but we like "Outlaw Country" as a deep dynasty prospect.

Broncos | Three Broncos will start on PUP list    Mon Jul 24, 04:48 PM

Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly (wrist), LB Shaquil Barrett (hip) and TE Jake Butt (knee) were placed on the Non-Football Injury list Monday, July 24. Additionally, DT Kyle Peko (foot) will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: Butt is the player to watch here for this season. He had first-round talent but fell to the fifth round due to a knee injury suffered in Michigan's bowl game. When healthy, Butt is arguably the best tight end on the Broncos roster. He's worth keeping an eye on as Broncos OC Mike McCoy has a history of getting production from the tight end position.

Broncos | Chad Kelly to throw in a couple weeks    Sat Jul 1, 09:47 PM

Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly (wrist) said Friday, June 30, that he expects to start throwing in a couple weeks with the goal of being ready by training camp.

Footballguys view: Kelly is a fine developmental prospect for the Broncos, and he was head coach Vance Joseph's favorite quarterback in the 2017 NFL draft. This 'Mr. Irrelevant' is far from that, and for fantasy owners he's well worth rostering in dynasty leagues. Kelly is unlikely to do much this year as Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian compete for the starting job in 2017. Next year, Kelly could have a chance to win the job if neither Lynch or Siemian impresses this season.

Broncos | Chad Kelly not a roster lock?    Fri Jun 23, 02:41 PM

Denver Broncos seventh-round QB Chad Kelly is not guaranteed a spot on the 53-man roster, according to the Denver Post's Cameron Wolfe, who believes Kelly may be placed on the Reserved/Injured list in 2017 in order to let him completely recover from wrist and knee surgeries.

Footballguys view: Kelly is not in the mix for the Broncos this year. Trevor siemian and Paxton Lynch will compete for the starting job in training camp. If Kelly is healthy next year he could potentially be in the competition for the starting job.

Broncos | Chad Kelly still in cast    Mon Jun 12, 07:12 PM

Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly (wrist) still has a cast on his injured wrist but expects it to be removed later this week. Kelly is expected to be cleared to practice in August.

Footballguys view: Kelly is going to be the no3 QB behind Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian. Even if he's cleared to practice in August, the team might ease him back into action. He's still less than a year removed from a major knee injury, and the Ole Miss gunslinger is seen more as a long-term project for the Broncos.

Broncos | Chad Kelly likely to miss workouts    Sun Jun 4, 04:11 PM

Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly (wrist) likely will not participate in organized team activities this week as well as the upcoming minicamp even though he will have the cast on his wrist removed Monday, June 5. Kelly will have to strengthen the wrist before he can return to the practice field.

Footballguys view: Kelly is unlikely to play this year for a couple of reasons. 1st) The injured wrist needs to heal, plus he's less than a year removed from a major knee injury. 2nd) The Broncos have Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch to compete for the starting job. Kelly may be a candidate for IR this season, and if neither Siemian or Lynch don't impress in 2017 we could see a door open for Kelly in 2018.

Broncos | Chad Kelly to have cast removed    Thu Jun 1, 11:16 PM

Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly (wrist) will have his cast removed Monday, June 5.

Footballguys view: Kelly is an intriguing prospect in dynasty leagues. He's a gunslinger with a skill set that is a mix of Andy Dalton and Jay Cutler. Kelly is third on the depth chart behind Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian. He's unlikely to climb the depth chart this year and may be put on PUP or IR depending on his injury.

Broncos | Chad Kelly should be ready for camp    Sat May 13, 11:45 AM

Denver Broncos seventh-round QB Chad Kelly (wrist) should be 'totally cleared' for training camp in August, according to head coach Vance Joseph.

Footballguys view: Kelly is coming back from wrist surgery, a major knee injury suffered last year and a lingering hernia problem. He's the most talented "Mr. Irrelevant" ever selected in the NFL draft, but Kelly is not likely to be much of a factor this year. Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian will compete for the starting job in training camp. Kelly could get in the mix in 2018 if neither Lynch or Siemian show enough future potential this season.

Broncos | Chad Kelly agrees to terms    Wed May 10, 02:23 PM

Denver Broncos seventh-round draft choice QB Chad Kelly agreed to terms on a four-year deal with the Broncos Wednesday, May 10. Kelly is expected to receive a signing bonus of nearly $65,000 but other financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The last player chosen in the 2017 NFL draft, Kelly is the most talented "Mr. Irrelevant" in league history. Injuries should sideline him this year (knee, wrist, groin), but Kelly has the talent to be a starter in the NFL....if he can stay healthy and stay out of trouble. Off field issues and character concerns caused Kelly to fall in the draft (in addition to his injuries), but there's no denying the talent he has as a passer. Kelly is confident, accurate and can make every throw. If Paxton Lynch (or Trevor Siemian) doesn't really impress this year, it could open the door for Kelly in 2018.

NFL | KC, SEA among teams interested in Chad Kelly    Sun Apr 23, 09:24 AM

Mississippi QB Chad Kelly has met with the Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks, in addition to having discussions with several other clubs over the phone.

Footballguys view: We could see Kelly as a late-round pick, but he may fall undrafted due to health concerns. He made it through a dozen passes at his pro day before injuring his wrist, and now he's had surgery to repair the damage. Couple that with plenty of off field concerns, and Kelly is likely to be a priority free agent or teams after the draft.

Bills | Chad Kelly visits Buffalo    Mon Apr 17, 06:04 PM

Mississippi QB Chad Kelly had a visit with the Buffalo Bills Monday, April 17.

Footballguys view: Their interest makes sense as he's the nephew and godson of NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly. The natural talent as a passer is there with Kelly, but off field issues and character concerns (plus injuries) may cause him to fall undrafted.

NFL | Chad Kelly had surgery    Tue Apr 11, 10:08 AM

Mississippi QB Chad Kelly (wrist) had surgery Monday, April 10, for an acute rupture of a ligament in his throwing wrist. He won't be able to throw for three months.

Footballguys view: That's not going to help his already tenuous draft stock. Kelly is a talented passer and has a gunslinger mentality. However, off field and character concerns will cause him to be drafted much later than his physical gifts would dictate. Kelly is likely to be a 7th round pick or priority free agent.

NFL | Chad Kelly boasts strong arm    Sat Mar 4, 07:45 PM

Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly did not attend the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine after having his invite rescinded due to off-field issues, but it didn't keep NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock from praising at least one aspect of his game.

Footballguys view: Kelly has a big arm and character concerns....and now injury concerns as he's currently recovering from a knee injury that ended his career at Ole Miss. Kelly started the first nine games before suffering a season-ending knee injury, finishing his senior year with 62.5 percent completions, 2,758 passing yards and a 19-8 TD-INT ratio.

NFL | Chad Kelly may still attend combine     Sat Feb 25, 12:32 AM

Mississippi QB Chad Kelly is focused on preparing for his pro day workout on April 2 but could still travel to the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine despite not having an invite, according to his agent.

Footballguys view: He was invited, then uninvited to the 2017 Scouting Combine in what is an unusual story. Per new NFL guidelines; draft-eligible prospects will not be permitted to participate in any aspect of the Combine if a background check reveals a conviction of a felony or misdemeanor involving violence or use of a weapon, domestic violence, sexual offense and/or sexual assault. Kelly pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct on what was deemed a non-criminal charge in January 2015 following an altercation nine months earlier outside a bar in Buffalo.

NFL | Chad Kelly will not attend combine    Thu Feb 16, 01:20 PM

Mississippi QB Chad Kelly (knee) was initially invited to attend the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine, but the offer was rescinded by the league. It remains unclear as to why the invitation was pulled.

Footballguys view: The question isn't why he wasn't invited - he plead guilty to a violent crime (Kelly pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct two years ago as part of a case in which he was initially accused of punching two people, threatening to shoot up a bar with an AK-47 and resisting arrest) and as Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith recently wrote, the NFL implemented a new rule this year that players who have been convicted of violent crimes won't be permitted. Despite this, teams will kick the tires on him because of his arm strength, but could pass more because of his size than his off-field issues.
