Chiefs | Kansas City makes coaching changes    Mon Jan 29, 04:41 PM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced the following promotions on the coaching staff Monday, Jan. 28: Mike Kafka to quarterbacks coach, Mark DeLeone to inside linebackers coach, Mike Smith to outside linebackers coach, Corey Matthaei to assistant offensive line coach, Joe Bleymaier to assistant quarterbacks coach, and Terry Bradden to defensive quality control coach. Additionally, Jay Valai and David Girardi were hired as quality control coaches. Special projects coach Tommy Brasher will retire, while linebackers coach Gary Gibbs will not return.

Footballguys view: Assistant head coach Brad Childress, a long time Reid right hand, is also retiring. Kafka could be the next rising star in the Andy Reid coaching tree.

Bengals | Mike Kafka signs    Tue Dec 29, 04:34 PM

Free-agent QB Mike Kafka (Titans) was signed to the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Footballguys view: Kafka has bounced around the league to several teams over the last five years. With A.J. McCarron and Andy Dalton banged up, the Bengals just needed another arm for the scout team.

Tennessee Titans QB Mike Kafka and WR Rico Richardson were released Tuesday, Dec. 22.

Footballguys view: As we get towards the end of the season, we'll see teams clean house heading into the offseason. Perhaps Kafka or Richardson can get a futures contract somewhere before 2016.

Vikings | Mike Kafka cut    Tue Sep 1, 10:22 AM

Minnesota Vikings QB Mike Kafka (undisclosed) was waived-injured Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Footballguys view: We knew this was coming, as the team seems to like undrafted rookie Taylor Heinicke and Shaun Hill is a proven veteran to take over if Teddy Bridgewater gets hurt. We see Bridgewater as a decent QB2 this season, with some upside, but that doesn't mean Hill, Heinicke or someone else stepping in would immediately put up those same numbers.

Vikings | Mike Kafka signs    Wed Apr 1, 04:54 PM

Free-agent QB Mike Kafka (Buccaneers) signed an undisclosed deal with the Minnesota Vikings Wednesday, April 1, according to his agent.

Footballguys view: The Vikings needed to add another arm after trading away Matt Cassel (Bills). Kafka has bounced around the league for years and has no fantasy value, even in the deepest dynasty leagues.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have added TE Cameron Brate, RB Jeff Demps, QB Mike Kafka, LB Brandon Magee, DT Matthew Masifilo and WR Solomon Patton to their practice squad.

Footballguys view: Patton is an interesting player to monitor in super deep dynasty leagues. He's quick, fast and explosive in the open field. This helps him as a dangerous return man and as a slot receiver.

Jaguars | Mike Kafka will be second QB in game     Thu Aug 22, 02:17 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said QB Mike Kafka will be the second quarterback in during the team's third preseason game. Kafka is competing with QB Matt Scott for the No. 3 quarterback job.

Footballguys view: Scott is the ultra-athletic rookie from Arizona who has a rocket arm. He's an incredible runner and can toy with defenders in the open field. Scott has a strong throwing arm but his footwork and arm mechanics need work. This should help to greatly improve his poor accuracy. Scott is an interesting prospect to monitor in super deep dynasty leagues and could be bound for the practice squad if he doesn't make the active roster.

Jaguars | Mike Kafka appears to be favorite for No. 3 QB job    Sat Aug 10, 11:13 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Mike Kafka was the third quarterback to enter the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 9, and appears to have an edge over Matt Scott for the No. 3 quarterback job.

Footballguys view: Blaine Gabbert didn't look very good against the Miami Dolphins and while Chad Henne looked better, that's not exactly calling him Mark Brunell. Given Gabbert's struggles and injury history and Henne's track record, the No. 3 quarterback spot in Jacksonville might have some value down the road.

Jaguars | Expected to keep three QBs    Sun Jul 21, 11:15 AM

The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to keep three quarterbacks on their final roster this season after keeping only two quarterbacks last season. QBs Mike Kafka and Matt Scott are expected to compete for the No. 3 quarterback job.

Footballguys view: Scott has high fantasy upside as a running quarterback, but he'll have to beat out a quarterback in Kafka who has been around the league for a few years. If Scott can win the #3 job, or even make the team's practice squad, keep tabs on his development.

Jaguars | Mike Kafka could compete for QB job    Wed Jun 26, 02:31 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QBs Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job during training camp, but QB Mike Kafka could enter the competition during camp.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars took advantage of their high waiver priority to snag Kafka when the Patriots let him go to sign Tim Tebow. Any Cecil Shorts or Justin Blackmon owners should be rooting for Henne to win this job, as they were top 10 wide receivers on a PPR basis while Henne was starting last year.

Jaguars | GM fine with taking five QBs to camp    Sat Jun 15, 12:44 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said he has no problem with taking five quarterbacks at training camp. QBs Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne, Mike Kafka, Jordan Rodgers and Matt Scott are currently on the roster.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars have a poor collection of QBs and more competition is nothing but a good thing. Gabbert and Henne are the most likely to start this season. Scott is an interesting UDFA to consider in super deep dynasty leagues. He's incredibly athletic and has a strong arm. However, he struggles with decision making and his accuracy leaves a lot to be desired.

Jaguars | Mike Kafka has chance to win QB job    Thu Jun 13, 06:40 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said Mike Kafka has 'just as good an opportunity' to win the starting QB jon as Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne or undrafted rookie Matt Scott. Caldwell had considered signing Kafka earlier in the offseason. The New England Patriots signed him but cut Kafka when they signed Tim Tebow.

Footballguys view: That tells you a lot about the state of the QBs in Jacksonville. Gabbert is in a make or break year yet all we're hearing is about how bad he looks at OTAs. We'll see how this QB competition plays out in training camp. We won't be surprised to see Chad Henne open the year as the starter for the Jaguars.

Jaguars | Claim Mike Kafka    Tue Jun 11, 04:23 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars claimed QB Mike Kafka (Patriots) off waivers Tuesday, June 11.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars love former Patriots players. They added DL Kyle Love and Brandon Deaderick earlier this year after they were let go by the Patriots. Kafka may not even crack the 53-man roster. He'll compete with UDFAs Matt Scott (Arizona) and Jordan Rodgers (Vanderbilt) to be the QB3 behind Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne.

Patriots | Two players released    Mon Jun 10, 05:18 PM

Patriots | Two signed to futures contract     Fri Jan 4, 06:34 PM

The New England Patriots have signed QB Mike Kafka and DE Marcus Benard to futures contracts. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Steelers | Brian Hoyer to work out    Mon Nov 19, 11:15 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers will work out free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Patriots) Tuesday, Nov. 20. He and free-agent QB Mike Kafka (Eagles) are the only two QBs being worked out, and the team intends on signing one of them.

Footballguys view: The Steelers need help at the QB position because both Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich are banged up.

Steelers | Mike Kafka to try out Tuesday    Mon Nov 19, 10:10 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers will work out free-agent QB Mike Kafka (Eagles) Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Footballguys view: With Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich hurt the team needs to add more depth behind new starter Charlie Batch. Kafka was with the Eagles during the preseason but broke his non-throwing hand and was cut at the end of the summer.

Patriots | Work out Mike Kafka    Tue Sep 4, 02:20 PM

Packers | Interested in Mike Kafka?    Sun Sep 2, 10:48 PM

Reports have linked the Green Bay Packers and free-agent QB Mike Kafka (Eagles), although if Kafka is added he is not expected to supplant QB Graham Harrell as the primary backup to QB Aaron Rodgers.

Footballguys view: The Packers have one of the worst backup QB situations in the league. Yes, Harrell looked okay in the team's fourth preseason game but we're not confident he would carry that over if pressed into regular season action. Green Bay will continue to look for a better backup behind Aaron Rodgers.

Eagles | Release Mike Kafka    Fri Aug 31, 04:42 PM

Updating a previous report, the Philadelphia Eagles released QB Mike Kafka after not being able to find a trade partner Friday, Aug. 31.

Footballguys view: Kafka was a hot prospect for the team early in his career, but the fourth-round pick's development stalled out and third year's third-round pick Nick Foles flew past him on the depth chart. That Trent Edwards also beat out Kafka shows you why no team offered the Eagles anything in a trade.

Eagles | Shopping Mike Kafka    Fri Aug 31, 02:58 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles are shopping QB Mike Kafka on the trade market.

Footballguys view: Nick Foles has had an impressive enough summer to make Kafka expendable. The Eagles won't fetch AJ Feeley or Kevin Kolb value for Kafka, but they could recoup a late pick.

Eagles | Mike Kafka, Trent Edwards could compete for spot    Wed Aug 29, 12:30 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Mike Kafka and Trent Edwards may be fighting for one roster spot if the team decides to keep three quarterbacks on the final roster. QBs Michael Vick and Nick Foles appear to be locks to make the roster.

Footballguys view: Kafka's injury to his non-throwing hand has put him squarely on the roster bubble. It opened the door for Foles to show what he could do against better competition in the preseason.

Eagles | Mike Kafka likely to miss preseason game    Wed Aug 29, 12:22 PM

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid indicated QB Mike Kafka (hand) likely will not play in the final preseason game Thursday, Aug. 30, because his left hand is still hurting. Reid said the only way Kafka would play would be if his hand improved drastically before the game.

Footballguys view: Kafka's on the roster bubble and fighting Trent Edwards for the third (and likely final) spot on the depth chart.

Eagles | Backup QB not decided    Tue Aug 28, 01:26 PM

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said the team hasn't made a decision on their backup quarterback between QBs Nick Foles, Mike Kafka (hand) and Trent Edwards. Kafka hasn't played the last two preseason games with a hand injury. Foles has gone 36-of-57 for 507 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. Foles appears to be the favorite for the backup job, and Kafka might be in danger of not making the roster cut.

Eagles | Mike Kafka takes reps in practice    Mon Aug 27, 10:04 PM

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles QB Mike Kafka (hand) was able to take a few reps in practice Monday, Aug. 27. It was his first time on the field since suffering a fractured left hand Aug. 9. He did not indicate whether or not he will see playing time in the team's preseason finale Thursday, Aug. 30. Head coach Andy Reid said he will decide after practice Wednesday, Aug. 29, whether or not Kafka will participate in the game.

Footballguys view: You never lose your job to injury in the NFL....unless the guy behind you plays better. Kafka was a lock to be the team's QB2 behind Michael Vick, but this hand injury has opened the door for rookie Nick Foles. The big, strong armed rookie has looked good this preseason and could win the QB2 job.

Eagles | Mike Kafka getting close to practicing    Mon Aug 27, 01:12 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Mike Kafka (hand) had been cleared to take snaps and is getting closer to returning to practice. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said the team has not decided whether Kafka will play in the preseason finale.

Footballguys view: It may be too little too late for Kafka this preseason. Rookie Nick Foles has looked fantastic this preseason and could end up winning the primary backup job behind Michael Vick. The team has a lot of time invested in Kafka and are unlikely to release him. They'll carry him as a QB3 if need be.

Eagles | Nick Foles likely to be No. 2 QB     Sat Aug 25, 08:41 AM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles will likely surpass QB Mike Kafka (hand) on the depth chart as the team's No. 2 quarterback as Foles has been sharp this preseason.

Footballguys view: Foles didn't look this good in college at Arizona. He's really impressed with his quick decisions and cool demeanor in the pocket.

Eagles | Michael Vick to have further tests    Tue Aug 21, 12:29 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick (ribs) will undergo another MRI exam and a CT scan Tuesday, Aug. 21, to see if there is damage to his ribs other than a fracture. Vick isn't ruled out for the next preseason game Friday, Aug. 25, but he's unlikely to play in that contest. QB Mike Kafka (hand) won't play either with a fractured hand, so QBs Nick Foles and Trent Edwards will likely split the time. Vick sounds optimistic that his injury isn't serious.

Footballguys view: This is standard operating procedure and not a sign of a more severe injury. The team is doing their due diligence to make sure Vick is healthy.

Eagles | Mike Kafka expected back for Week 1     Thu Aug 16, 12:24 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Mike Kafka (hand) is not expected to return until the final preseason game at the earliest; however, the team believes he will be ready for Week 1.

Footballguys view: In the meantime we'll see more from rookie Nick Foles and veteran Trent Edwards. We think Foles could continue to impress but is likely locked in as their QB3 if Kafka is healthy. Edwards is on the roster bubble and could get cut once Kafka is cleared.

Eagles | Uncertain about Nick Foles as a backup QB     Mon Aug 13, 12:15 PM

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said the team will wait and see whether QB Nick Foles can be the team's backup quarterback, particularly if QB Mike Kafka's (hand) injury sets him back. 'We'll see. If he continues to develop at a high rate, that will be the key for him,' Mornhinweg said.

Footballguys view: Foles made some big plays against the Steelers and has a strong arm that can make all the throws required in the NFL. However, he struggles with pressure and is not overly mobile. The rookie needs to work on his accuracy and make better decisions with the football.

Eagles | Mike Kafka injured     Sat Aug 11, 11:11 AM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Mike Kafka (hand) fractured his left (non-throwing) hand in the team's preseason opener and will be limited for the next three weeks. Kafka will be able to participate in practice drills where he does not have to take snaps from center. QB Nick Foles will work with the No. 2 offense in 'live' practice periods.

Footballguys view: This is a big opportunity for Foles here. With Kafka out Foles will be able to show what he can do in practice and in the preseason. Foles has a strong arm but needs to work on his accuracy and decision making.
