Raiders | Landry Jones cut    Wed May 22, 05:14 PM

Oakland Raiders QB Landry Jones was released Wednesday, May 22.

Footballguys view: The Raiders are fine with Mike Glennon and Nathan Peterman as backups behind starter Derek Carr. Jones came into the league as a fourth-round pick for the Steelers in the 2013 NFL draft. He's a backup at best and might latch on with a team looking for a camp arm or depth at the position.

Jaguars | Landry Jones headed to Jaguars    Wed Oct 31, 10:17 AM

Free-agent QB Landry Jones (Steelers) is expected to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cowboys | Dallas taking a look at Landry Jones    Mon Sep 17, 01:57 PM

Free-agent QB Landry Jones (Steelers) is working out for the Dallas Cowboys on Monday, Sept. 17.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys are just updating their emergency list. A fourth-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft, Jones spent years developing on the Steelers roster...and they decided to move on from him after training camp this year. Dallas currently has Cooper Rush and rookie Mike White on the roster behind starter Dak Prescott.

Steelers | Pittsburgh backup QBs garnering interest    Wed Aug 29, 02:48 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QBs Joshua Dobbs and Landry Jones have been garnering interest from other NFL clubs searching for a backup.

Footballguys view: Mason Rudolph is in line to be the primary backup to Ben Roethlisberger in 2018...and he may be the one who takes over when Roethlisberger is done. Dobbs and Jones are not both going to make the 53-man roster. With Teddy Bridgewater (Saints) traded, any teams interested in veteran depth may approach the Steelers for a cheap trade.

Steelers | Landry Jones preferred as short-term option    Sat Jul 7, 11:17 AM

Although the Pittsburgh Steelers view QB Mason Rudolph as their quarterback of the future, the team prefers QB Landry Jones as the short-term backup to QB Ben Roethlisberger, according to Joe Rutter of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Footballguys view: It makes lot of sense since it's unlikely that Rudolph is anywhere near ready to take over in the event of an emergency. Jones has the experience and even if he's not the future, he's the reliable one right now. Neither has any value, since nobody expects Roethlisberger to be hurt this season though he was banged up in 2015 and 2016.

Steelers | Two QBs may compete for one spot    Mon May 7, 03:16 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones and Joshua Dobbs likely will compete for one roster spot during training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: Jones has struggled as a backup to Ben Roethlisberger, but Dobbs doesn't really have the skill set you can trust right now as a no.2 QB. Rookie Mason Rudolph should be groomed behind Roethlisberger as the team's QB of the future. They might trust him enough as a rookie to be the primary backup.

Steelers | Week 17 game recap for Steelers    Sun Dec 31, 04:57 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones completed 23-of-27 passes for 239 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Week 17 against the Cleveland Browns with QB Ben Roethlisberger resting. RB Stevan Ridley carried 17 times for 80 yards and a score with RB Le'Veon Bell sitting out, while WR Darrius Heyward-Bey scored on a 29-yard rush. WR JuJu Smith-Schuster shined with nine grabs, 143 yards and a score, and WR Martavis Bryant was good for six catches and 65 yards.

Footballguys view: Smith-Schuster was a force in this game, adding a kickoff return for a score. The Steelers continued a general trend of the team being very competitive in Week 17 even while starters are being rested for the playoffs.

Steelers | Landry Jones expected to play    Fri Aug 25, 07:07 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones (abdomen) is expected to play in the preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts Saturday, Aug. 26, and serve as the No. 2 quarterback.

Footballguys view: Rookie Josh Dobbs was supposedly a consideration for the #2 job, but his play in the preseason probably shut the door on that possibility.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones (abdomen), DE Stephon Tuitt (ankle) and LB Ryan Shazier (illness) suffered injuries during practice Monday, July 31.

Footballguys view: Jones is the expected backup to Ben Roethlisberger this year. An injury to him could open the door even more for rookie Josh Dobbs. With Roethlisberger's future after 2017 uncertain, Dobbs may be groomed to be an eventual starter for the team.

Steelers | Joshua Dobbs to be backup QB?    Thu May 25, 10:09 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Joshua Dobbs is likely to beat out QB Landry Jones for the backup quarterback job, according to former NFL executive Mark Dominik.

Footballguys view: We'd agree with that sentiment. The rookie from Tennessee is smart, athletic and can make any throw required. He does need a lot of work before he's ready to start. Dobbs tends to lock onto bad reads and doesn't adjust after the snap. He'll stare down his targets and lead defenders right into the throwing lane. Dobbs has great deep accuracy but could use better pass placement on short/intermediate routes. Even with all this work needed, Dobbs is likely better than Jones almost from day one.

Steelers | Joshua Dobbs could be No. 2 QB    Sat Apr 29, 04:58 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Joshua Dobbs is expected to compete with QB Landry Jones for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp.

Footballguys view: We could see Dobbs beating out Jones...mostly because Jones isn't that good. Dobbs is super smart and athletic, but he needs to make quicker/better decisions as a passer. He locks onto targets and relays his intentions with his eyes. Make no doubt about it, Dobbs is a project.

Steelers | Landry Jones contract update    Thu Mar 9, 07:26 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones signed a two-year deal worth $4.4 million. The deal includes $600,000 in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: Given he knows the system, and is relatively cheap, the Steelers will overlook his complete lack of upside. Jones is a mess and drags this offense down when he's in the game - even guys like new moneybags Antonio Brown and LeVeon Bell. When he's in the game, temper your expectations.

Steelers | Landry Jones re-signs with PIT    Thu Mar 9, 05:51 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed free-agent QB Landry Jones to a two-year contract Thursday, March 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Jones should not be considered a QB of the future for the Steelers, but he's the backup to Ben Roethlisberger for a couple of more years. Expect Pittsburgh to start looking for a young passer to groom behind Roethlisberter.

Steelers | Pittsburgh wants Landry Jones back    Thu Feb 16, 03:10 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent QB Landry Jones is a candidate to return to the Steelers. General manager Kevin Colbert said Pittsburgh would like to re-sign their backup and keep him 'in the mix.' It was reported earlier that the Steelers view Jones as an elite NFL backup.

Footballguys view: He knows the system, so that's something, but Jones has yet to show us anything which leads us to believe he is a long term answer if Ben Roethlisberger gets hurt, much less, retires. Jones is a bondo patch on the Steelers Car.

Steelers | Landry Jones highly regarded in Pittsburgh    Thu Feb 16, 12:53 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent QB Landry Jones is viewed among the top backups in the NFL by the Steelers' decision-makers, according to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writer Gerry Dulac. Jones is viewed as being better than '80 percent of the other backups' by the Steelers.

Footballguys view: This is a bit surprising, as nothing Jones has done really impresses us. It could be he knows the system well, or it could be something leaked by his agents. We're not in love with him, and his presence under center limited Antonio Brown and the receivers a bit as well.

Steelers | Landry Jones solid in relief    Sun Jan 1, 05:31 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones threw for 277 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown pass to Cobi Hamilton with 2:57 left in overtime, in a 27-24 win over the Cleveland Browns.

Footballguys view: Jones had a rough start to the game, but came on to notch the comeback victory. He couldn't have had an easier opposing defense to solve, but any success is a good place to start for Jones, who was the third string quarterback in Plan A before Bruce Gradkowski went down again this summer.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have not decided if QB Ben Roethlisberger (knee) or QB Landry Jones will start in Week 9, and it is expected to be a game-time decision, according to sources.

Footballguys view: This is going to be a true game-time decision, and it really impacts the Steelers offense if Roethlisberger can't play. It's amazing that he's even close to playing after injuring his meniscus, but that's Roethlisberger for you.

Steelers | Landry Jones expected to stay as No. 2 QB    Wed Aug 31, 06:10 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones is still expected to be the primary backup quarterback for the Steelers even though they added QB Zach Mettenberger.

Steelers | Landry Jones expected to keep job    Fri Aug 19, 03:22 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones is expected to keep the No. 2 quarterback job because he had a solid training camp and there are not many options available in free agency. Jones has thrown for 166 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions in two preseason games.

Footballguys view: Jones kept the offense's pulse going last year - barely - and even fed Antonio Brown's 6-124 line in his one full start - representing Brown's best game without Ben Roethlisberger last year. It's too late in the game for the Steelers to upgrade from Jones now that Bruce Gradkowski is sidelined with a torn hamstring.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones completed 12 of his 20 passes for 111 yards and four interceptions in a 17-0 preseason loss to the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday, Aug. 18.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. The Steelers are toast if QB Ben Roethlisberger misses any time.

Steelers | Bruce Gradkowski has hamstring tear    Mon Aug 15, 03:47 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Bruce Gradkowski (hamstring) has a sizable hamstring tear, according to a source. He may be out for an extended period of time. QBs Landry Jones and Dustin Vaughan are the primary backups behind QB Ben Roethlisberger.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the Steelers here. Gradkowski is a seasoned veteran who gives the team an experienced backup behind Roethlisberger. The team wouldn't go off the rails if Gradkowski had to step in for a game or two. We don't feel as confident in the Steelers offense if Jones or Vaughan is the starting QB due to an injury.

Free-agent QB Bruce Gradkowski (Steelers) will re-sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers Monday, May 2, and compete with QB Landry Jones for the backup job.

Footballguys view: That's a good move for the Steelers. Jones hasn't shown the development needed to get excited about his future in the pros, and Gradkowski is a solid reserve QB who won't cause you to lose sleep if he's a spot starter.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger misses practice    Wed Jan 13, 05:24 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (shoulder) did not take part in practice Wednesday, Jan. 13, and he said he did not throw at all. He has yet to throw since a wild-card victory over the Cincinnati Bengals after suffering an AC joint sprain. Roethlisberger said he's unsure when he'll throw again, and he'll continue to receive treatment.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger thinks it'll be 'tough' for him to play in the Divisional Round against the Broncos if he can't throw downfield. An AC joint sprain hinders the ability to throw with velocity. QB Landry Jones would make his third start of his career if Roethlisberger can't play.
