Chargers | James Jones cut    Mon Aug 29, 08:33 PM

San Diego Chargers WR James Jones was released Monday, Aug. 29.

Footballguys view: About a month ago, WR Stevie Johnson went down with a season-ending knee injury and the Chargers were quick to scoop Jones up. Now, Jones is on the street again. There may be some team interested, but we can't imagine anyone lined up around the block for his services.

Chargers | James Jones struggling to separate    Tue Aug 9, 10:23 AM

San Diego Chargers WR James Jones has struggled in training camp to make clean releases off of the line of scrimmage.

Footballguys view: Jones' best days are behind him, and it's possible that his temporary resurgence in 2015 was more due to chemistry with Aaron Rodgers than what Jones has left in the tank. Dynamic second-year UDFA Tyrell Williams could push Jones for a spot in three-wide sets with a good summer.

Chargers | San Diego adds James Jones    Tue Aug 2, 03:59 PM

Free-agent WR James Jones (Packers) is signing an undisclosed deal with the San Diego Chargers Tuesday, Aug. 2, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Chargers had to do something with Stevie Johnson undergoing knee surgery in the near future. Jones has a strong game near the red zone, and that could be how the Chargers envision using him. Keenan Allen should be a WR2 for fantasy owners in 2016, and we like Tyrell Williams as a dynasty sleeper at the position. The addition of Jones will prevent the offense from having any early hiccups with the loss of Johnson, but we don't see a ton of fantasy value from the veteran with his new team.

Chargers | James Jones visiting Chargers    Tue Aug 2, 08:11 AM

Free-agent WR James Jones (Packers) is visiting the San Diego Chargers Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Footballguys view: This is potentially good for Philip Rivers. The team is also bringing in Brian Hartline, so adding a veteran to replace Stevie Johnson could help the offense avoid hiccups early in the season. For dynasty leagues, we are watching Tyrell Williams much more closely, and if he hits, the net addition to the offense will be more than Jones or Hartline can provide.

49ers | James Jones likes San Francisco     Wed Jun 1, 05:47 PM

Free-agent WR James Jones (Packers) said he would love to play for the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. Jones, who played for San Jose State in college, would like to remain in the Bay Area. While his preference is to stay in the Bay Area, Jones added that he's just ready to play and will play wherever.

Footballguys view: The 49ers have a big need at #2 wide receiver. They could still bring back Anquan Boldin or look for a winner among the current lackluster wide receiver depth chart. The eventual #2 receiver is unlikely to have fantasy relevance, but they could hurt #1 wide receiver Torrey Smith's upside.

  Packers | James Jones won't be re-signed    Mon Mar 21, 06:25 PM

Free-agent WR James Jones' (Packers) representative has been told the Green Bay Packers are not interested in re-signing the wide receiver because of the number of young wide receivers they have on their roster.

Footballguys view: The Packers are jam-packed at the position, but Jones has established good chemistry with QB Aaron Rodgers. He's unlikely to be as successful anywhere else (as he's already proven with the Raiders and Giants).

Packers | James Jones being ignored?    Sat Mar 5, 08:29 PM

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent WR James Jones said teams are trying to 'brush over' his name when talking about free agents at his position.

Footballguys view: He just needs to stay with the Packers. Anytime he leaves, Jones doesn't produce like he does in Green Bay. We'll see if the two sides can work out another team-friendly deal.

Packers | James Jones wants to return to Pack    Fri Mar 4, 05:17 PM

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent WR James Jones said he would love to re-sign with the Packers this offseason and finish his career there. He also said he plans on playing another three or four seasons.

Footballguys view: Jones should just stay with the Packers. When he's left, he hasn't done much...only to return to Green Bay and shine. Jones has a connection with QB Aaron Rodgers, and the team could continue to feature him as a red-zone threat.

Packers | Uncertain if James Jones returns    Thu Feb 4, 01:02 AM

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent WR James Jones will be 32 this offseason, and typically general manager Ted Thompson avoids receivers of that advanced age. However, Jones played 1,205 out of 1,316 snaps (91.6 percent) while leading the team in receiving yardage (971) with 17.8 yards per reception. He is also a favorite of QB Aaron Rodgers.

Footballguys view: Jones was one of the few receivers Aaron Rodgers could count on this past season, but with Jordy Nelson returning, the Packers would be better off promoting a younger guy.

Packers | James Jones in for tough matchup?    Thu Jan 14, 06:51 PM

Green Bay Packers WR James Jones could be matched up with Arizona Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson in the divisional round Saturday, Jan. 16. Peterson allowed a league-best 45.6 passer rating in coverage. CB Justin Bethel was targeted a league-high 22 times in Weeks 16 and 17, and Packers QB Aaron Rodgers threw at Bethel a season-high 14 times in their first matchup, resulting in seven catches for 75 yards and an interception.

Footballguys view: You only need to know one thing: is Jones wearing his hoodie? Ever since Jones went with the mid-80s high school look he has played pretty well. That said, this is a daunting matchup and Jones can be a bit touchdown dependent at times. We're feeling conservative about him and recommend him as a hail mary type WR2 play, at best.

Packers | James Jones tops in receiving    Sun Jan 10, 09:54 PM

Green Bay Packers WR James Jones posted seven receptions for a team-best 81 yards in the NFC Wild Card Game Sunday, Jan. 10, against the Washington Redskins. He was also targeted a team-high 11 times.

Footballguys view: Jones has always had a strong connection with QB Aaron Rodgers. When Rodgers said before the game the team was going to 'let it fly' then going to Jones early and often was a given. Moving forward in the playoffs, the Packers should move towards more of a pass-happy offense if they want to advance.

Green Bay Packers WR James Jones finished with six catches for a team-high 82 yards and a touchdown in a 30-20 win over the Oakland Raiders in Week 15.

Footballguys view: Jones had been fading from view in the second half of the year, but he had a terrific game against his old team this week. He'll be a what the heck flex at Arizona next week.

Packers | James Jones breaks out of slump    Sun Nov 22, 09:14 PM

Green Bay Packers WR James Jones had six catches for 109 yards and a touchdown in a 30-13 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 11.

Footballguys view: Jones had a sideline touchdown catch and Aaron Rodgers was at his best throwing to his most experienced receiver. He's back in play as a boom/bust WR3/Flex on Thanksgiving against the Bears.

Packers | James Jones listed as probable    Fri Nov 20, 04:17 PM

Green Bay Packers WR James Jones (quadriceps) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 20, and is listed as probable for the Week 11 game against the Minnesota Vikings. The Packers did not practice Friday, so his practice designation is an estimate.

Packers | Eddie Lacy, James Jones practice    Thu Nov 19, 06:28 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (groin) and WR James Jones (quadriceps) were both full participants in practice Thursday, Nov. 19.

Footballguys view: Lacy might be back this week but with the dysfunctional backfield, he's no more than a borderline RB3/RB4 and he could kill James Starks RB3 status if he plays so keep a watch on this. Jones has been blanketed by cornerbacks the last few games, so he hovers at a WR5 status again this week.

Packers | Two Packers limited Thursday    Thu Nov 12, 05:54 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (groin) and WR James Jones (quadriceps) were limited in practice Thursday, Nov. 12.

Footballguys view: James Starks is going to get the majority of the carries in this weekend's game and we see Stark as a borderline RB1/RB2. Lacy may get the whole week off, but if he plays we could see him as a potential RB3. If Jones can play we have him slotted as a WR3 but buyer beware--he's stunk up the joint along with the rest of the offense over the last two weeks.

Packers | GB offense lacking speed    Wed Nov 11, 12:10 PM

The Green Bay Packers have the slowest team in the league when it comes to skill positions in the passing game. The combined average 40-yard dash time of WRs Randall Cobb (4.55 seconds), Davante Adams (4.56), James Jones (4.6) plus TE Richard Rodgers (4.87) ranks as a league-worst 4.65 seconds. One of the biggest reasons the Packers receivers can't get open consistently this year is because of their lack of speed, according to an NFL scout. The loss of WR Jordy Nelson and his 4.51-second 40-yard dash has slowed this offense down. WRs Jeff Janis and Ty Montgomery are much faster, but neither is a top three receiver for the team right now, and Montgomery has missed the last two games with an ankle injury.

Footballguys view: The Packers mostly works in small movements down the field, which is limiting Aaron Rodgers upside. He's still a strong QB1, especially against the morose Lions defense, but this issue is showing up on Sundays.

Packers | James Jones almost non-existent    Mon Nov 2, 01:26 AM

Green Bay Packers WR James Jones had one reception for just two yards in the Week 8 game against the Denver Broncos. He was targeted twice.

Footballguys view: Jones was covered well by Broncos CB Bradley Roby. QB Aaron Rodgers was under pressure on 63 percent of his dropbacks against the Broncos, and he didn't have much time to do anything on Sunday night.

Packers | Davante Adams, James Jones limited    Wed Oct 14, 05:43 PM

Green Bay Packers WRs Davante Adams (ankle) and James Jones (hamstring) were both limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Footballguys view: It was Adams' first practice since suffering his left ankle injury Sept. 28. QB Aaron Rodgers called Adams the deep threat the offense has been missing, and Rogers didn't throw one pass more than 30 yards downfield in Week 5.

Green Bay Packers WRs Randall Cobb (shoulder) and James Jones (hamstring) were both limited in practice Friday, Oct. 9, but both are listed as probable for Week 5 against the St. Louis Rams.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners are lined up here. Cobb is his normal WR1 this week against the Rams. Jones is more of a low-end WR2 or flex play in Week 5.

Green Bay Packers WR James Jones hauled in seven receptions for a team-high 139 yards and a touchdown in the Week 3 game against the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, Sept. 28.

Footballguys view: Of course he scored a touchdown. Jones was a fantastic addition for the offense. He knows the team, knows where Rodgers wants him to be and certainly has a nose for the end zone.

Packers | James Jones hauls in touchdown    Mon Sep 21, 01:43 AM

Green Bay Packers WR James Jones had a 29-yard touchdown in the Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks, and he had another overturned after review.

Footballguys view: Jones may not catch a ton of passes...but he's always getting high-value targets. He's a "what the heck" flex play every week because of his chemistry with Aaron Rodgers and nose for the end zone.

Packers | James Jones makes quick impact    Sun Sep 13, 09:23 PM

Green Bay Packers WR James Jones had four catches for 51 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-23 win over the Chicago Bears Sunday, Sept. 13.

Footballguys view: Jones was Aaron Rodgers main target in the red zone, and there's no reason to think that he'll go away in that part of the field after the success he and Rodgers enjoyed there over the years. Jones is a priority waiver wire pickup who should be a boom/bust WR3/Flex. His emergence also hurts the case for Davante Adams to deliver on his inflated ADP.

Packers | James Jones ahead of Jeff Janis    Tue Sep 8, 07:41 PM

Green Bay Packers WR James Jones is listed ahead of WR Jeff Janis on the Packers' depth chart.

Footballguys view: Dynasty owners take note here..in addition to re-draft owners who took a late-round flier in deeper leagues. Jones knows the system well, and he's likely to cut into the targets for guys like Ty Montgomery, as well as a little of Davante Adams' balls.

Packers | James Jones officially signs with GB    Mon Sep 7, 04:29 PM

Free-agent WR James Jones (Giants) officially signed with the Green Bay Packers Monday, Sept. 7.

Footballguys view: The signing of Jones certainly does make Ty Montgomery and Jeff Janis less attractive options. Jones has a strong chemistry with Aaron Rodgers, and he already knows the offense like the back of his hand. He'll work as the team's no3 wide receiver behind Randall Cobb and Davante Adams.

Packers | James Jones heading to Green Bay    Sun Sep 6, 09:24 PM

Free-agent WR James Jones (Giants) has agreed to a deal to return to the Green Bay Packers Sunday, Sept. 6, according to a source. The transaction won't be announced until Monday, Sept. 7, when the Packers make room on their 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: Jones signing can't be good for Jeff Janis, Ty Montgomery or Davante Adams, but it should help Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. If the youngsters play well, Jones might just be cheap depth, but his familiarity with the offense and Rodgers should get him on the field.

Packers | Green Bay talking with James Jones    Sun Sep 6, 02:36 PM

Free-agent WR James Jones (Giants) has had talks with the Green Bay Packers but no deal is been reached at this point, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Jeff Janis and Ty Montgomery are both much less attractive sleepers if Jones is signed. Jones knows the offense in and out and has a great rapport with Aaron Rodgers. While the veteran's redraft value would be minimal, it would hurt the youngsters vying for the #3 job and maybe even Davante Adams, as his game is similar to Jones'.

Giants | James Jones signing    Thu Jul 30, 06:52 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent WR James Jones (Raiders) is signing a one-year deal with the New York Giants. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Jones is going to give the Giants some depth at the wide receiver position. Last year, Jones hauled in 73 catches for 666 yards and six touchdowns for the Raiders. With the Giants, Jones is reunited with OC Ben McAdoo. The two worked together back in Green Bay from 20070-2013.

NFL | James Jones thinks he can help several teams    Fri Jun 12, 03:20 PM

Free-agent WR James Jones (Raiders) said he believes he would be a fit with the Kansas City Chiefs, New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars and Seattle Seahawks.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars would be a good fit because new OC Greg Olson worked with Jones last year in Oakland. No matter where Jones lands, we're not overly excited by his fantasy potential this year.

Raiders | James Jones released    Mon May 4, 08:17 AM

Oakland Raiders WR James Jones was released Sunday, May 3.

Footballguys view: This move saves the Raiders $3.5 million on the cap. Jones was getting squeezed out by the additions of Michael Crabtree through free agency and the selection of Amari Cooper in the 2015 NFL draft. We can't imagine Jones attracting a ton of interest on the open market, but he should be able to make a training camp roster.

Oakland Raiders WR James Jones gained just 20 yards on eight catches in Week 10 against the Denver Broncos. That's 2.5 yards per catch.

Footballguys view: Credit star cornerback Chris Harris here. The Broncos corner locked down Jones, and the wide receiver has an NFL-record low for yards on eight catches. His 20 yards receiving is the lowest in NFL history on so many catches.

Footballguys view: Jones was one of the "prized" free agents the Raiders picked up this offseason. Most expected him to be the starter opposite Denarius Moore this year. This depth chart shows that Jones has some work to do. Jones has a current ADP of WR55 (12.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Raiders | James Jones showing his physicality    Mon Jul 28, 08:24 PM

Oakland Raiders WR James Jones has shown a knack for catching balls in heavy traffic during full team sessions, according to Jerry Mcdonald of The Oakland Tribune.

Footballguys view: That is what Jones does. He can make difficult catches seem routine, but he sometimes has trouble securing easy catches. Jones is also known for his nose for the end zone. With the Packers in 2012, Jones caught a whopping 14 touchdowns that season. He could be in line to catch about half that as the Raiders top receiver in 2014.

Oakland Raiders WR James Jones (shoulder) suffered a sprained shoulder during practice Tuesday, June 17, but head coach Dennis Allen said he should be fine for training camp.

Footballguys view: This is the last thing Jones needed. He's the Raiders WR1 this year, and the team is counting on him to be a weapon in the revamped passing game. His current ADP is WR52 (11.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.
