Packers | Kerryon Johnson works out for Packers    Wed Nov 17, 09:36 AM

Free-agent RB Kerryon Johnson (49ers) worked out for the Green Bay Packers Tuesday, Nov. 16.

Footballguys view: The Packers are just updating their emergency list here with Aaron Jones out a couple of weeks. They could sign Johnson to be part of the backfield behind interim starter A.J. Dillon. With rookie Kylin Hill out for the year, the Packers could use Johnson and Patrick Taylor as reserve backs while Jones is on the mend and Dillon is getting a large workload.

Eagles | Kerryon Johnson set free    Tue Aug 17, 03:13 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) was waived with an injury designation Tuesday, Aug. 17.

Footballguys view: Johnson was waived by the Lions earlier this year. Now, he finds himself back on the lookout for a new team. The Eagles have Miles Sanders as their starter and didn't need Johnson behind him due to guys like rookie Kenneth Gainwell, Boston Scott and Jordan Howard. At 24 years old, Johnson is likely to get another shot with a team in need of running back depth.

Eagles | Kerryon Johnson restructured deal    Wed Jun 2, 09:36 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Kerryon Johnson agreed to a restructured contract that will pay him the veteran minimum of $920,000 with a matching cap hit in 2021, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Johnson is getting a second chance in the league to prove himself. The 43rd overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft by the Lions, Johnson struggled to stay healthy and impress. The Lions waived him this offseason and the Eagles scooped him up. He'll compete with Jordan Howard, Boston Scott, and rookie Kenneth Gainwell for snaps behind Miles Sanders.

Eagles | Philly claims Kerryon Johnson    Fri May 7, 04:30 PM

Former Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson was claimed off waivers by the Philadelphia Eagles Friday, May 7.

Footballguys view: The Eagles have a jam-packed running back room with the addition of Johnson. Miles Sanders is still the top back and behind him there will be a competition to establish a pecking order with guys like Boston Scott, Jordan Howard and Johnson. The Eagles also added Kenneth Gainwell (Memphis) in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL draft.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson officially cut    Thu May 6, 04:31 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson was officially waived Thursday, May 6.

Footballguys view: Okay, so much for Lions general manager Brad Holmes saying things were a "work in progress" with Johnson. Instead of trading him away, the team decides to let him go. Johnson was banged up too often to trust and fell to third on the depth chart last year. He needs a fresh start and should have a few teams interested in his services.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson still in Detroit    Thu May 6, 12:44 PM

To update, Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson remains with the team despite a recent report that he will be released, Lions general manager Brad Holmes said Thursday, May 6. Holmes said the situation is a 'work in progress.'

Footballguys view: A "work in progress" sounds like he's about to be traded somewhere. With reports indicating he's been released, we can't imagine Johnson sticking with the team. They're moving forward with D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams as their duo on the backfield. Perhaps some team is interested in trading a late-round pick for Johnson...or perhaps he'll just get released anyway. Stay tuned.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson done in Detroit    Wed May 5, 07:53 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson was waived Wednesday, May 5, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Things change pretty quickly around here. A second-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Johnson struggled to stay healthy and impress with the Lions. He fell to the no.3 back last year and now gets a chance at a fresh start. The Lions move forward with D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams as their top two backs.

Detroit Lions OL Tyrell Crosby (ankle), WR Kenny Golladay (hip) and CB Jeff Okudah (groin) did not practice all week and have been ruled out for Week 14 versus the Green Bay Packers. DE Austin Bryant (thigh), DL Da'Shawn Hand (groin), S C.J. Moore (ankle), DL John Penisini (shoulder) and QB Matthew Stafford (thumb) were limited in practice Friday, Dec. 11, and are listed as questionable. RB D'Andre Swift (illness) was upgraded to a full practice Friday and is also listed as questionable. DE Everson Griffen (non-injury) was added to the injury report and did not practice Friday but is expected to play. RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) practiced in full for a second straight day Friday and no longer appears on the injury report.

Footballguys view: Golladay could return for the Tennessee game next week. He reportedly could have played this week if he had gotten in a practice today, but he was unable to.

Detroit Lions RBs Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson are expected to split carries for Week 11's game versus the Carolina Panthers, with Peterson serving as the starter.

Footballguys view: Peterson still has a high ceiling because of the suspect Panthers run defense and his ability to get in a groove when he is fed. Johnson has a little what the heck flex appeal in PPR leagues.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson comfortable with brace    Sun Aug 23, 01:00 AM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson said he has become comfortable playing with a brace on his right knee. 'So that's just the new me,' Johnson said. 'I'm the knee-brace guy, everybody jokes about it. It feels great. I like having the knee brace on. It helps me out a lot.'

Footballguys view: The brace won't prevent injury, but if it makes Johnson feel better, it still helps, although it's troubling that he would feel like he needs it. D'Andre Swift getting starts at some point due to Johnson missing time remains a compelling reason to target Swift if you believe in him.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson wearing knee brace    Sat Aug 15, 01:50 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) was photographed wearing a brace on his right knee during the team's first practice of training camp Friday, Aug. 14. It is not believed, though, that Johnson has reinjured the knee he had a procedure on during the 2019 season.

Footballguys view: Johnson was supposed to take over in the Lions backfield but that hasn't happened over the last couple of seasons due to injury. Now, Johnson will compete with rookie RB D'Andre Swift for the starting job in training camp.

Lions | D'Andre Swift ready to roll    Fri Jul 10, 12:35 PM

Detroit Lions RB D'Andre Swift says he's eager to compete with returning starter Kerryon Johnson for snaps. 'I've been competing all my life,' Swift said Thursday, July 9 on a conference call. 'Kerryon is a great back, great player. I remember when he was at Auburn, and he was killing us. He's still doing great in the league. I can't even give you my role. Whatever role they have for me, I just gotta make sure I'm in the best shape and know all of the plays so I'm ready to take it on full force. But I'm not going in there looking to do anything, just doing what I've been doing.'

Footballguys view: Swift might have a slower ramp up with no offseason, but the Lions will employ some sort of RBBC to deploy their two second-round pick running backs. ADP indicates that the fantasy community is a lot higher on Swift, but the likelihood of a close to even split means that Johnson is the better pick at the steep discount. Swift's best chance of hitting this year is Johnson missing significant time with an injury for the third straight year.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson is cool with D'Andre Swift selection    Thu Jun 11, 12:29 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson is pleased with the selection of RB D'Andre Swift in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. 'Look, I knew we were going to draft a running back eventually. I think we got, in my opinion, definitely one of the top two (in the draft). I love having a running back. I love winning games and I think he can help us do that, so I wasn't tripping at all,' Johnson said during a Wednesday, June 10, Zoom call with reporters. 'But just having multiple running backs that are capable of running the ball at an efficient level, whether the style is different or the style is the same, it just takes the stress off one another,' Johnson added. 'This is going to be his (Swift's) first (season) in the league. This is going to be my third. We're all going to have the help of Bo (Scarbrough) and Ty (Johnson) and all those other guys. All our running backs before Huntley and Swift came all started in an NFL game. All of us started multiple (games), so that's something not a lot of teams can say. We got a lot of guys who know how to play, we got a lot of guys who have played and I think we'll all get along just fine.'

Footballguys view: Johnson may be cool with it now but how will he feel if/when the rookie takes the starting job? Swift has a three-down skill set and was arguably the best running back in the 2020 NFL draft. He can be a solid starter at least if not a star at the pro level. Johnson has skill but injuries and inconsistencies have prevented him from producing at the expected level. We'll see this battle shake out in training camp.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson a workhorse?    Fri Apr 3, 11:31 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson averaged 20.3 touches and 87.5 yards from scrimmage over the first four games in 2019.

Footballguys view: He'd be a workhorse if he could maintain that level of workload over a full 16-game season. In two seasons with the Lions, Johnson has only played in 18 games. Last year, Johnson only appeared in eight games and ran for a paltry 3.6 yards per carry. It's a make-or-break season for Johnson in 2020.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson likely to receive normal workload    Sun Dec 22, 09:16 AM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson is expected to get his normal workload in Week 16's contest against the Denver Broncos, even if he doesn't necessarily start the game, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a what the heck flex today, but he is still in a bad offense on the road, so only his fresh legs give him some hope of mattering in Week 16.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson activated    Sat Dec 21, 04:15 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) was activated off of the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Dec. 21, according to a source. He's eligible to play Sunday, Dec. 22, against the Denver Broncos.

Footballguys view: This move was expected and now is official. Johnson has been practicing fully for two weeks and he should be in line for the starting job against the Broncos. The Broncos are fairly stout against the run, so Fantasy GMs should just consider Johnson a RB3 or flex play in Week 16.

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) 'hopes to' play Sunday, Dec. 22, against the Denver Broncos, he said Thursday, Dec. 19. He hasn't yet been activated from the Reserve/Injured list.

Footballguys view: Johnson has been practicing in full for two weeks and his fresh legs make him a sleeper this week if he plays vs Denver.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson set to return?    Thu Dec 19, 01:42 PM

Detroit Lions RB Kerryon Johnson (knee) is practicing with the team Thursday, Dec. 19, and looks as though he'll rejoin the lineup Sunday, Dec. 22, against the Denver Broncos, according to Chris Burke of The Athletic. Burke adds he'd plan on Johnson starting the game.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are preparing as if Johnson will return to the field this week. The Lions don't have a much of a commitment to running the ball, and the Broncos defense is tough against the run. Johnson could start, but we'd only consider him a deep 'what the heck' flex in Week 16.

Lions | Kerryon Johnson practicing    Wed Dec 4, 12:32 PM
