Chip Scoggins, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings WR Jaymar Johnson is making a strong bid in training camp to earn a roster spot as both a wide receiver and punt returner. Johnson expects to win the return job this season. Johnson and WR Percy Harvin are getting most of the punt return reps in practice, although Johnson seems more comfortable in the role at this stage.
| Footballguys view: Johnson would be much more comfortable in that role because Harvin has never been a returner before in his career. Jaymar Johnson is extremely quick and shifty, plus he gets up to top speed in a hurry. Harvin will star on offense, but Johnson will have to make this team with his special teams play. Don't be surprised when he runs a couple of punts back for touchdowns during the regular season. |

'You could tell that he went to a school that didn't have a sophisticated passing attack. But he has phenomenal quickness and speed. Phenomenal. And his hands are better than you would think, from a guy that fast,' Carter said.

| Footballguys view: Just because these guys are battling for the final WR spot on the roster doesn't mean that they don't have talent. One player to watch in this battle is WR Jaymar Johnson. A sixth-round pick out of Jackson State last year, Johnson spent most of the year on the Vikings practice squad. He is lightning quick, and has great footwork. He uses these attributes to get open against good coverage because he can break off a route before the defender can react. The battle for the final WR spot should go all the way through the preseason. |
