Falcons | Cut 17 players    Fri Sep 2, 04:16 PM

The Atlanta Falcons have released DE Chauncey Davis, DT Trey Lewis and LB Coy Wire. They have waived RB Gartrell Johnson, FB Lucas Cox, WR Brandyn Harvey, TE Marquez Branson, Cs Paul Fenaroli and Ryan McMahon, DEs Tom McCarthy and Kiante Tripp, LB Bear Woods, CB Kamaal McIlwain, S Matt Hansen, S Rafael Priest and S Suaesi Tuimaunei. The team have released WR Andy Strickland (undisclosed) after raching an injury settlement.

Footballguys view: Chauncey Davis has made a few plays as a rotational end for the team, but they reinforced at the position with Ray Edwards in free agency. Johnson was reportedly having a good camp, but after the team re-signed Jason Snelling, his roster spot was not longer his.

Atlanta Falcons RB Gartrell Johnson is seeing action with the first-team offense in practice Tuesday, Aug. 9, with RB Michael Turner (personal) out for personal reasons.

Footballguys view: According to practice reports Johnson has been looking quicker and stronger than ever before. Johnson can get to top speed in a hurry and is the type of back who regularly wins collisions.

Falcons | Gartrell Johnson, Shawnbrey McNeal sign    Tue Sep 21, 05:25 PM

The Atlanta Falcons signed free-agent RB Gartrell Johnson (Giants) to an undisclosed deal Tuesday, Sept. 21. RB Shawnbrey McNeal was also signed off of the practice squad.

Footballguys view: With Jerious Norwood on Injured Reserve the Falcons had to add more RB depth. Gartrell Johnson was unimpressive with the Giants but has a little power and vision to his game. McNeal is more of a Norwood replacement. He's not the biggest guy but gets to top speed in a hurry and can change direction on a dime.

Giants | Rhett Bomar, 13 others waived    Sat Sep 4, 06:23 PM

The New York Giants have waived QB Rhett Bomar, DT Jay Alford, RB Andre Brown, RB Gartrell Johnson, WR Tim X. Brown, OL Herb Taylor, OL Todd Londolt, DL Alex Hall, DL Nate Collins, DB Seth Williams, DB Courtney Brown, DB Matt O'Hanlon and DB Sha'reff Rashad, reports Michael Eisen, of Giants.com. The team terminated the contracts of OL Guy Whimper and S John Busing.

Footballguys view: With the addition of Sage Rosenfels the Giants didn't need the services of Bomar anymore. They could add him to the practice squad to continue his development. Andre Brown getting cut is a bit of a surprise to us. With so many RBs going down with injury across the league it wouldn't surprise us to see another team quickly scoop up Brown.

Giants | Andre Brown likely to be No. 3 RB    Thu Sep 2, 04:32 PM

New York Giants RB Andre Brown is likely to serve as the team's No. 3 running back this year, according to ESPNNewYork.com's Ohm Youngmisuk. Brown and RB Danny Ware have competed for the spot, with RB Gartrell Johnson behind both of them on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: Andre Brown is a good overall running back who missed all of his rookie season last year due to an Achilles' injury. Brown is an effective between the tackles runner, a good hands receiver out of the backfield, and elusive enough to rack up positive yards at the second level. We feel Brown could be an effective every down back for the Giants if called upon for more playing time.

Giants | RB Brown 'doing OK' according to Coughlin    Thu May 27, 09:07 PM

Ralph Vacchiano, from the New York Daily News, notes that according to the Giants RB Andre Brown (Achilles) and DT Jay Alford (torn knee ligaments) - both of whom missed all of last season with injuries - were on the field for the start of the OTAs last week. Brown, however, was "limited" according to Tom Coughlin. "He has had a couple of setbacks this winter," the coach said. "But by and large he is doing OK." "It feels good," Brown said. "They had to pull me out a little bit. I did a couple of running plays out there and made a few cuts. I feel like I'm getting there - I'm about 95 percent. I shouldn't be limited by training camp. By the end of next week I should pretty much be doing everything. My Achilles is fine."

Footballguys view: The Giants backfield is jam packed with talent, and Andre Brown is trying to prove himself to the coaching staff after missing most of last season due to an Achilles' injury. Brown runs with some power and authority, but is also athletic enough to be elusive in the open field. He's also a decent receiving option out of the backfield. If he can stay healthy and make the final roster he could push for a few carries behind Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw in 2010.

Giants | G. Johnson could be main backup Week 13    Thu Dec 3, 12:39 PM

Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Giants RB Gartrell Johnson would be the main backup running back in Week 13 if RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot, ankle) were not able to play.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a power back, but he does have good initial burst and instincts for running the football. He is also a good receiver out of the backfield, and could prove to be a nice change of pace option behind Brandon Jacobs.

Giants | G. Johnson could see action in Week 12    Wed Nov 25, 01:27 PM

Mike Garafolo, of The Star-Ledger, reports New York Giants RB Gartrell Johnson will dress out in Week 12 Thursday, Nov. 26, and could see some time in the backfield.

Footballguys view: Gartrell Johnson returns to the state where he played college football (Colorado State) as the Giants face the Broncos on Thanksgiving. Danny Ware is the backup behind Brandon Jacobs, but Gartrell could see some action as the third-string running back. Like Ware, Johnson is a good receiver out of the backfield and could see some playing time on passing downs.

The New York Giants have declared OT Adam Koets, LB Antonio Pierce, CB D.J. Johnson, RB Gartrell Johnson, OL Guy Whimper, CB Kevin Dockery, WR Ramses Barden, WR Sinorice Moss inactive for Week 11.

The New York Giants have declared CB Aaron Ross, OT Adam Koets, DL Chris Canty, RB Gartrell Johnson, OL Guy Whimper, WR Mario Manningham, LB Michael Boley, WR Ramses Barden inactive for Week 8.

Footballguys view: It will be Domenik Hixon, not Hakeem Nicks, replacing Manningham in the starting lineup. Expect Nicks to get plenty of playing time today, however, and it's likely he'll outproduce Hixon.

Giants | Ga. Johnson will have a role    Wed Sep 16, 11:47 PM

Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News, reports that the Giants signed RB Gartrell Johnson to play a role in the team's running game, but head coach Tom Coughlin did not elaborate on the nature of the role, other than saying that Johnson is a player who ""can be up in the line of scrimmage."

Footballguys view: Johnson is a classic downhill runner in the mold of Travis Henry. Just about any competent back could find room to run behind the Giants offensive line, so it's not impossible that Johnson will have fantasy value at some point this season.

Giants | Claim Johnson off waivers    Tue Sep 15, 05:28 PM

Ralph Vacchiano, from the New York Daily News, reports that rather than promote Allen Patrick from the practice squad, the Giants claimed Gartrell Johnson off waivers from the San Diego Chargers. The 5-11, 218-pound Johnson was the Chargers' fourth-round draft pick out of Miami. He is considered a powerful inside runner who was could be good in short yardage.

Footballguys view: We predicted this yesterday when Johnson was released by the Chargers. The Giants make a lot of sense for the power back from Colorado State. Johnson is an underrated receiver out of the backfield, and is very instinctive when running between the tackles. He could see a few carries in New York now that Danny Ware is out for a couple of weeks with a dislocated elbow.

Chargers | G. Johnson waived    Mon Sep 14, 05:13 PM

The San Diego Chargers have announced they have waived RB Gartrell Johnson.

Footballguys view: Gartrell was the Chargers fourth-round pick, but he never really wowed the team in the preseason. On the other hand, veteran Michael Bennett made a case to make the final roster, and the Chargers must have felt like he was a better option than Johnson. Gartrell Johnson is a power back from Colorado State, and may find his way onto another team with running back injuries like the New York Giants.

Chargers | Johnson will make team, Bennett on the bubble    Mon Aug 31, 08:26 PM

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports that fourth-round pick RB Gartrell Johnson, but veteran RB Michael Bennett will only make the team if starting fullback Jacob Hester is not considered the emergency plan at tailback. If that is the case, then backup FB Mike Tolbert will make the team. Acee writes that Tolbert might make the team over Bennett anyway because of his special teams prowess.

Footballguys view: Bennett will get scooped by an RB-needy team if he gets cut, and he looks like he could still be productive if he gets playing time.

Chargers | Bennett ahead of Johnson for third RB    Tue Aug 11, 06:17 PM

Michael Lombardo, of SDBoltReport.com, reports that Chargers fourth-round pick RB Gartrell Johnson is behind Michael Bennett in the battle to be the team's third RB because he isn't running with patience, and he needs to work on his pass-catching skills. Lombardo thinks Johnson will get "plenty of opportunities" show his progress in the preseason and "state his claim in emphatic fashion.

Footballguys view: Johnson probably figures into the team's future plans regardless of whether he can beat out Bennett, but carrying him in the regular season would probably require the team to have six RBs on the roster when fullbacks are included.

Chargers | Gartrell Johnson one of the most impressive in camp    Tue Aug 4, 12:27 AM

Kevin Acee, from the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports one of the most impressive players the past two days, since the Chargers started practicing in pads, has been rookie running back Gartrell Johnson. He has certainly taken his licks, and he has been impressive doing so. Said Johnson: "I love it, baby. That's my M.O."

Footballguys view: Johnson is one of our favorite rookie running backs, but he may have to wait a year before he really gets a chance at production. He is a powerful running back that will make his living between the tackles. Johnson's first 10 yards are fast enough, but he doesn't have long speed. Catching out of the backfield is an underrated part of his game, and the Chargers could keep LaDainian Tomlinson fresh this year by spelling him with Gartrell Johnson. If Tomlinson leaves the Chargers after this season it will be Johnson who gets the first shot at taking over as the feature back.

Chargers | G. Johnson agrees to four-year deal    Sat Jul 25, 08:12 PM

Casey Pearce, of Chargers.com, reports the San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms with rookie RB Gartrell Johnson on a four-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Johnson is the power running back from Colorado State, and he could develop into San Diego's RB of the future. He does a good job of running through trash at the line of scrimmage and is hard to bring down because he runs with such force. Johnson runs with a good pad level and has good field vision and instincts for running the football. The Chargers are hoping he's the next Michael Turner and they will develop him this year as the backup to LaDainian Tomlinson. If LT moves on then Johnson could be the lead back in a RBBC.
