Raiders | Derrick Johnson terms    Thu May 10, 10:42 AM

Updating previous reports, Oakland Raiders LB Derrick Johnson's one-year, $1.5 million deal includes a $200,000 signing bonus and $500,000 guaranteed. The deal is worth a maximum of $2.25 million.

Footballguys view: It's a safe deal for both sides. If Johnson still has 'it' the Raiders get a pretty reasonably priced linebacker and if he doesn't, it wasn't a costly error.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson will be free agent    Tue Feb 13, 03:40 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent LB Derrick Johnson's contract will not be extended before the new league year begins in mid-March. Johnson is Kansas City's all-time leading tackler.

Footballguys view: It's going to be weird seeing Johnson wear another jersey. A first-round pick of the Chiefs in 2005, Johnson has been a long-time tackling machine in Kansas City. He's not quite the player he used to be, but Johnson is still capable of making an impact as a part time player. Johnson will have interest on the open market.

Chiefs | Two Chiefs LBs could be cut    Fri Feb 9, 12:22 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson and LB Tamba Hali could be released this offseason, in the opinion of beat writer Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Chiefs in 2005, it would be odd to see Johnson playing in another uniform. He graded out positively in 2017 but the Chiefs seem intent to move on with Reggie Ragland in Johnson's spot. Hali barely played last year (116 snaps) and is not the same player he used to be. Releasing both would free up over $15 million on the Chiefs cap.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson plans to play in 2018    Sun Jan 7, 12:17 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson said he definitely plans on continue his playing career in 2018.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick by the Chiefs in 2005, Johnson's play dropped off a bit in 2017. He has a $10.2 million cap hit in 2018 with $2.2 million in dead money. The Chiefs are cap strapped and could save $8 million by cutting Johnson.

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') said he remains on schedule in his recovery and hopes to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Chiefs here. Johnson is the heart and soul of the Chiefs defense, and when he's on the field he's always around the ball. This is the second time Johnson has had an Achilles' injury, so expect the team to take it easy on him in training camp.

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') said he will be ready to participate fully in training camp. Johnson ruptured his Achilles' tendon late last season.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson hoping to return by camp    Fri Feb 3, 12:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') is optimistic he will be able to run by the start of offseason workouts and hopes to be ready by training camp, according to the Kansas City Star's Terez A. Paylor.

Footballguys view: Johnson tore his left achilles late in the season. He came back from a torn right achilles suffered in 2014, but that one came much earlier in the season. The Chiefs wouldn't save much money by releasing him, so he'll likely be with the team even if he's not ready for Week 1.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson lost for year    Fri Dec 9, 12:58 AM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') will miss the remainder of the season after rupturing his left Achilles' tendon against the Oakland Raiders Thursday, Dec. 8.

Footballguys view: The team has Ramik Wilson, DJ Alexander, and Terrance Smith on the roster, but could bring back Josh Mauga or Justin March from injured reserve. If they do that, they will lose the chance to bring back Jamaal Charles. They should sign an inside linebacker before Week 15. This is a big loss for an ascending defense. The Chiefs will face the power running game of Tennessee without Johnson next week.

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson signed a three-year, $21 million deal in the offseason with a $5.25 million signing bonus. If age catches up to him, he might not make the $2 million skill guarantee he has awaiting him in 2017. He could be a one-and-done casualty after this season.

Free-agent LB Derrick Johnson (Chiefs) re-signed to a three-year, $21 million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs Wednesday, March 9, according to a source.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson unlikely to be tagged    Sat Jan 23, 06:52 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent LB Derrick Johnson is likely to fetch around $6 million per season, similar to the deal Cleveland Browns LB Karlos Dansby is playing for. The franchise tag for linebackers is expected to be around $14 million and that is not likely to be a realistic option.

Footballguys view: After the season-ending loss to the Patriots, Johnson expressed his desire to stay with the Chiefs. He may not give them a huge hometown discount, but we could see the two sides coming to an agreement before Johnson hits the open market.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson ready to play    Mon Jul 13, 02:10 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (knee) said he's looking forward to training camp after missing all but one game last year with a torn Achilles' tendon.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson back at practice    Thu Jun 11, 04:23 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (knee) was a full participant in practice Thursday, June 11, after missing the last five practices with knee inflammation.

Footballguys view: Derrick Johnson has been participating in offseason workouts, only taking a little break to rest his knee. We're not worried about his availability for the season and the Chiefs need him in the front seven so they may be cautious with him this summer.

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (knee) and DT Dontari Poe (back) missed organized team activities Tuesday, June 2. Johnson sat with knee inflammation while Poe sat with back pain.

Footballguys view: These key veterans don't need every snap in the offseason. Johnson is a leader the team looks to at the linebacker position. Poe is a mountain of a man who opponents find nearly impossible to move. They'll be back when these minor injuries have cleared up.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson likely to stay    Tue Mar 31, 02:37 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') and DE Mike DeVito (Achilles') are both pushing each other in their rehabs from torn Achilles' tendons. Both players also have a year left on their contracts. DeVito agreed to a pay cut that dropped his salary to $2.9 million. Johnson has a salary cap number of $5.2 million, and the Chiefs are only around $2.85 million under the 2015 cap. Kansas City could create more room by releasing Johnson, but the Chiefs are expected to hang onto him.

Footballguys view: Johnson can clean up as a run-stuffer if healthy. The Chiefs would be wise to keep him around even though his cap number is a bit higher than they perhaps would like it to be.
