NFL | Chris Johnson ready to walk away    Mon Nov 5, 02:11 PM

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday, Nov. 5.

Footballguys view: CJ2K will always be remembered fondly by Fantasy GMs who had him when he was at his best. Johnson, a first-round pick in 2008 out of East Carolina, had the best season of his career in 2009 when he had 12 100-yard games and rushed for 2,006 yards on the season. He had six 1,000-yard rushing seasons during his career and was one of the fastest running backs to ever play the game. Johnson held the Scouting Combine record with a 4.24 40-yard dash until John Ross (4.22) beat that mark in 2017.

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) said Wednesday, Feb. 28, that he wants to 'give it another go' and continue his career in 2018. 'I'm not done yet. I am still going strong. I got too much juice left,' Johnson said.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson let go    Tue Oct 10, 01:38 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson was released Tuesday, Oct. 10.

Footballguys view: That could be the end of the road for Johnson in the NFL. Formerly known as CJ2K, Johnson has only averaged 2.5 YPC on 45 carries in 2017. He hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2014 and no longer has the crazy speed that made him a special back in his heyday.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson will remain starter    Tue Sep 26, 03:56 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will continue to start in Arizona's backfield in Week 4 despite managing just 17 yards on 12 carries in Week 3.

Footballguys view: Johnson looked rusty against the Cowboys on Monday night. He'll get another shot to prove that he can carry the load for the Cardinals even though Andre Ellington gained more yards (and played more snaps) than Johnson did in Week 3.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson stifled by Cowboys defense    Tue Sep 26, 12:51 AM

Cardinals | Chris Johnson to see more work    Thu Sep 21, 09:25 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will see more carries in Week 3 against the Dallas Cowboys than he did in Week 2, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a possible flex play against a weak Cowboys defense. Expect 15 or more carries and a reasonable chance at goal line carries.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson leads ARI rushing attack    Sun Sep 17, 06:15 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson ran 11 times for 44 yards Sunday, Sept. 17, in a 16-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Footballguys view: In other words, there's no Cardinals back worth rostering right now.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson expected to get work    Wed Sep 13, 11:53 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson is 'expected to get carries' in the team's Week 2 game Sunday, Sept. 17, versus the Indianapolis Colts.

Footballguys view: That just makes things more complicated in the Cardinals backfield. Andre Ellington might be the better play in PPR leagues, while Kerwynn Williams might be the better flex option in standard leagues. Then Johnson could come in and crush the limited fantasy value for both.

Cardinals | David Johnson officially goes to IR    Tue Sep 12, 04:50 PM

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (wrist) was officially placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Sept. 12. Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) was officially re-signed in a corresponding move.

Footballguys view: Johnson will undergo wrist surgery and be out 2-3 months as he recovers. At the earliest, Johnson could return to the field in Week 10 against the Seahawks. Johnson may be back for a run during the fantasy playoffs. Hopefully you have an IR spot in your fantasy league where you can stash Johnson for the time being.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson returns to Arizona    Tue Sep 12, 01:11 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) agreed to terms with the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

Footballguys view: With David Johnson (wrist) on IR, the team turns back to Johnson. They decided to keep Kerwynn Williams over Johnson during the final cuts earlier this year, and Williams should be the lead back in a RBBC. That committee includes Williams, Johnson and Andre Ellington. As you can see, it's a bit of a mess for fantasy owners.

Cardinals | Arizona intends to bring back Chris Johnson    Tue Sep 12, 12:03 PM

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) is expected to re-sign with the Arizona Cardinals following the news that David Johnson will miss two to three months to recover from wrist surgery.

Footballguys view: Johnson is going to be in the mix with Kerwynn Williams and Andre Ellington. The return of Johnson to the desert will negatively impact the fantasy prospects of Williams. Keep this in mind when working your waiver wire.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson let go    Fri Sep 1, 03:37 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson was released Friday, Sept. 1.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson will have a role    Fri Jul 21, 09:14 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will be on the field at the same time as RB David Johnson on occasion, head coach Bruce Arians said Friday, July 21. 'We've had it in the plan every year and one of the two always gets hurt all the damn time,' Arians said. 'But we'll have some two-back stuff with he and David back there'

Footballguys view: Johnson is set up as a clear handcuff to David Johnson, although he's not the same receiving back that he used to be. Kerwynn Williams was strong in limited duty last year and would play a role if the starter went down.

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will receive a base salary of $1 million in his one-year contract. He is scheduled to receive $200,000 in guaranteed money and can make more with incentives.

Footballguys view: He's your handcuff for David Johnson, but nothing more barring injury.

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) was re-signed to a one-year deal by the Arizona Cardinals Thursday, July 20. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: No more than a backup, Johnson does give the Cardinals a little insurance in case something happens to David Johnson (no relation). David Johnson is the guy to have and we aren't even that excited about Chris Johnson as a handcuff unless you're looking for help late in your draft.

NFL | Chris Johnson expects to join a team    Wed Jun 7, 07:11 PM

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) said he expects to sign with a team before training camp and hopes to join a contending team.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals could well be that team. Right now they have only roster fringe but underrated Kerwynn Williams and Andre Ellington behind David Johnson, and Ellington was just moved back to running back after an aborted conversion to wide receiver.

NFL | Chris Johnson not ready to step away    Fri Jun 2, 02:29 PM

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) wants to continue his career and has stayed in 'close contact' with the Arizona Cardinals.

Footballguys view: There are also a few other teams interested according to CJ2K. Johnson also notes becoming the 30th player to reach 10,000 career rushing yards - a mark from which he is 463 yards shy of - is a motivating factor. We'll see when injuries strike in training camp if Johnson gets a call.

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) said in an interview Tuesday, Feb. 28, that he can 'definitely' still make plays and that he still has his speed.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson set to be FA    Sun Jan 15, 05:54 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: At 31-years old, Johnson still feels like he has something to prove. Over the last two years, Johnson has played in only 15 games. In 2016, Johnson was limited to four games as a groin injury that required surgery cut his season short. He should get a shot somewhere, but it might not be until training camp.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson to be free agent    Sun Jan 8, 03:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: Johnson is 31 years old and has only played in 15 games over the last two years. This season was cut short by sports hernia surgery. The speedy veteran did flash when given the ball with the Cardinals, and any team in need of a part-time playmaker should have interest.

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (groin) is eligible to return to practice this week, as is S Tyvon Branch (hernia). Both are on the Reserve/Injured list and only one can be designated to return. Head coach Bruce Arians said the decision had not been made, and he also mentioned LB Alani Fua (knee) as a possibility.

Footballguys view: He's not going to have much value unless something happens to David Johnson, who is having a really good season. So, barring something big happening, Johnson will be nothing more than a guy giving Johnson a breather and not worth having on your roster as more than a handcuff.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson to IR    Wed Oct 5, 12:44 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson (groin) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, Oct. 5. He will be out a minimum of eight weeks.

Cardinals | David Johnson is an every-down back    Tue Sep 27, 11:13 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson played 79 of a possible 82 snaps against the Buffalo Bills in Week 3. RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington logged just three and one, respectively.

Footballguys view: Any concern about Johnson splitting time in the backfield has been squashed this year. David Johnson is a star player, and he's the centerpiece of the Cardinals offense. While they are struggling in the passing game at times, Johnson is solid on the ground. He's also one of the best receivers out of the backfield in the league. There is no doubt that Johnson is a set-it-and-forget-it starter each week for fantasy owners.

Cardinals | David Johnson will have help    Thu Aug 11, 04:29 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson will not be run into the ground early on in the regular season because RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington will be able to help, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: How much will Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington see the field? Overall we have David Johnson as an excellent RB1, but if Arians starts splitting carries to keep the young player fresh, it will hurt his production. Arians has other more important things to worry about, but Fantasy GMs don't, so keep an eye on reports out of camp.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington could play receiver    Mon Jul 18, 05:55 PM

The majority of Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington's playing time may come at wide receiver, as long as RBs David Johnson and Chris Johnson are healthy, according to azcardinals.com's Darren Urban.

Footballguys view: Ellington could easily be a slot receiver for the Cardinals. He's quick enough to break ankles in the open field, and Ellington has the speed to gain separation on linebackers or safeties. He's missed 11 games in three years with the Cardinals, but Ellington has ran 571 routes during that time--a mark good for 23rd in the league at the RB position. If David Johnson and Chris Johnson are healthy, there may not be many touches for Ellington as a rusher.

Cardinals | David Johnson will be featured    Mon Jul 18, 05:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is the unquestioned bellcow running back for the Cardinals this year, according to Darren Urban of azcardinals.com. RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington will back up like they did for most of 2015.

Footballguys view: David Johnson shined during his rookie season with the Cardinals. His blend of size/power/speed is one that gets any fantasy football player excited. He's a first-round pick this year and has the opportunity to finish as the best RB in fantasy football. Johnson's current ADP is RB3 (1.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | Cards could use two RBs at a time    Tue Jun 7, 10:11 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is expected to get a lion's share of the work, but RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington each have skillsets which could help the offense. In fact, head coach Bruce Arians hinted Tuesday, June 7, that two backs could be on the field at the same time. 'When I first came here, that's something B.A. told me he wanted to do,' Chris Johnson said. 'It started off with me getting here late (in training camp), then Andre getting hurt early and me getting hurt. It was hard to get two of us on the field at one time, but that's something we've really been working hard on.'

Footballguys view: David Johnson is well worth taking in the first round of all fantasy drafts, but it will be interesting to see how the team mixes in Chris Johnson and Ellington behind him. Right now, Chris Johnson is going off the board at RB53 (13.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson could start for Arizona    Tue May 31, 07:54 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson could claim the starting job in Arizona's backfield despite head coach Bruce Arians claiming that RB David Johnson is the bell cow back, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Josh Weinfuss.

Footballguys view: No matter who is the starter, the Cardinals are likely to use some form of RBBC. Chris Johnson proved last year that he still has some left in the tank...before getting hurt. David Johnson proved that he can be a big-time runner and receiver in the NFL. We think the latter gets the starting job with the seasoned veteran working as a change-of-pace back.

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson said he believes he and RB David Johnson can be the best running back tandem in the NFL. David Johnson said Chris Johnson has helped him become a more patient running back.

Footballguys view: Chris Johnson still has the speed to be dangerous when given a crease, but second-year pro David Johnson is set to be the team's lead back. At this time, David Johnson has a current ADP of RB4 (1.08) in 12-team PPR leagues while Chris Johnson is considered RB57 (14.02).

Dolphins | Miami eyeing Ezekiel Elliott?    Fri Mar 18, 09:16 PM

Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott is being considered as an option for the 13th overall pick by the Miami Dolphins, who missed out on Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson and Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson in free agency.

Footballguys view: With the 13th-overall pick, the Dolphins could get the best RB in this draft class. Elliot has the potential to be a three-down impact player in the pros. He's got good speed, vision and quickness to the hole. There may only be one or two RBs who go off the board in the first round, but Elliot will be the first.

Footballguys view: Johnson was very productive with Arizona before getting hurt, so this is a good fit and we assume the deal isn't a huge one.
