Raiders | Chad Johnson to work out for LV?    Wed Jul 8, 10:27 AM

Free-agent WR Chad Johnson (Patriots) tweeted that he was preparing for a workout with the Las Vegas Raiders. A Raiders spokesman said he wasn't aware of any scheduled workouts with Johnson, who last played in the NFL in the 2011 season with the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: Johnson is 42-years old and his best days as a wide receiver are far behind him. However, he was set to tryout with the XFL back in January for a kicker position. He's dabbled with kicking before in his football career, never kicking a field goal in the regular season but booting an extra point for the Bengals back in 2009 preseason. Who knows if Johnson is going to try out as a receiver or kicker or if this is just a social networking post where nothing comes to fruition.

Browns | Chad Johnson to work with Browns    Tue Jul 12, 03:56 PM

Free-agent WR Chad Johnson (Dolphins) was invited by Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson to work out with Cleveland wide receivers at training camp.

Footballguys view: He's not going to be part of the coaching staff, but Johnson is going to be a guest instructor. The artist formerly known as 'Ochocinco' has been out of the NFL since he was with the Dolphins for a couple of months in 2013. Since then, he's been playing (when healthy and not suspended) in the CFL for the Montreal Alouettes. Browns camp is already going to be interesting with all the changes in staff and the personnel, but now it will be even more interesting if a personality like Johnson is on site.

NFL | Chad Johnson still hoping for NFL opportunity    Wed Aug 6, 04:28 PM

Free-agent WR Chad Johnson (Dolphins) is still hopeful for a return to the National Football League, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus. 'If they did [call], he would jump for it,' Rosenhaus said. 'Of course, he would love it. But right now, he's operating as a Canadian Football League player. We will see what happens. It's not like we're holding our breath that he's going to play in the NFL. But he's trying. That's the goal.'

Footballguys view: Johnson is donating his entire CFL salary to charity while he plays for the Montreal Alouettes. He's not looking great up in Canada, and we doubt if he ever plays in the NFL again.

CFL | Red tape in Chad Johnson's deal?    Tue Apr 29, 12:07 AM

Free-agent WR Chad Johnson (Dolphins) agreed to a deal with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. However, the team is awaiting word on whether Johnson will be given the appropriate permit to work in Canada. The team could get final word within the next seven to 10 days. A training camp assault of Johnson's wife in 2012 ultimately be what keeps him out of Canada, as people with criminal records are routinely blocked from securing permission to work in Canada.

Free-agent WR Chad Johnson (Patriots) said Tuesday, Oct. 22, that he 'would love the opportunity to go out the right way,' and get a chance to try to make a team in camp, but he also admitted that the odds are slim.

Footballguys view: The fire may still be burning, but we doubt any team would answer the call. Johnson's best days are behind him, and there are several better street free agent options out there.

NFL | Chad Johnson released from jail    Mon Jun 17, 12:47 PM

Free-agent WR Chad Johnson (Dolphins) was released from jail in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Monday, June 17, after apologize for his inappropriate behavior during a court hearing the previous week. Broward County Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh cut his 30-day sentence after hearing his apology but ordered him to perform 25 hours of community service and attend twice-a-week domestic violence counseling sessions as part of his probation, which she extended three months from its initial sentence, through mid-October.

Footballguys view: Judge McHugh should watch football sometime. Patting a teammate, or coach, on the butt is just what football players do. This legal trouble won't help him latch on with another team. Johnson's days in the league are likely over.

NFL | Chad Johnson sentenced to 30 days in jail    Mon Jun 10, 12:50 PM

Free-agent WR Chad Johnson was sentenced to 30 days in jail Monday, June 10, for a probation violation in his domestic violence case. His legal side had reached a deal with prosecutors for community service and counseling instead of jail time. After a deal was supposedly in place, he was asked by the judge whether he approved of his lawyer, and Johnson then gave his lawyer a tap on the backside, in the football parlance of approval. This angered the judge, who insisted Johnson wasn't taking the proceedings seriously before rescinding the plea deal and handing down the jail sentence.

Footballguys view: Slapping the backside of your teammate is a football thing. The judge must not be a football fan, or really uptight, or both.

Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said the team is not interested in signing free-agent WR Plaxico Burress (Jets), WR Chad Johnson (Dolphins) or WR Terrell Owens (Seahawks) because none of them fit the team at this point.

Footballguys view: This is a smart move for a rebuilding team. It's better to get youngsters like Juron Criner and Rod Streater valuable early experience than to give an aging vet one more go-round in the NFL.

As of right now, there is zero interest around the NFL in free-agent WRs Terrell Owens (Seahawks) and Chad Johnson (Dolphins).

Cowboys | Not interested in Chad Johnson    Wed Aug 15, 08:16 PM

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said the team has not had any conversations about the possibility of pursuing free-agent WR Chad Johnson (Dolphins).

Dolphins | Chad Johnson failed to really impress     Wed Aug 15, 11:03 AM

Free-agent WR Chad Johnson (Dolphins) looked solid in Miami Dolphins training camp, but he didn't look that good. He was still an aging receiver who struggled to separate from tight coverage.

Footballguys view: Johnson has decent downfield speed but if he can't get open then he won't get signed to a new team. We can't imagine any team in a rush to sign Johnson, and not only because of his recent legal trouble. His time in the NFL may be done.

Seahawks | Not interested in Chad Johnson     Wed Aug 15, 09:25 AM

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said the team has no interest in signing free-agent WR Chad Johnson (Dolphins). 'No, I think we're pretty well settled with what we're doing here,' Carroll said. 'That's not going to happen here. No.'

Footballguys view: Insert 31 other team names in the title of this story and it would be even more accurate. We don't see any team rushing to the waiver wire for Johnson, and not only because of his recent legal troubles. Johnson's not the same player he used to be and his declining skill set is not desirable for a team looking for WR help.

Dolphins | Chad Johnson released    Sun Aug 12, 08:40 PM

Updating a previous report, the Miami Dolphins released WR Chad Johnson Sunday, Aug. 12.

Dolphins | Chad Johnson keeping quiet     Thu Aug 9, 10:08 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Chad Johnson said he is no longer speaking to the media after receiving a stern warning from head coach Joe Philbin for his outspoken manner and penchant for profanity. 'I don't do media anymore,' Johnson said as he walked past reporters.

Footballguys view: This isn't a bad move for Johnson at this point in his career. At one time his antics with the Bengals were seen as innocent. Then Johnson became a caricature of himself, changed his name to Chad Ochocinco and people thought he became a distraction. The Dolphins don't have an overly talented WR corps and Johnson could be among the team leaders in receptions.

Dolphins | Chad Johnson remains confident     Thu Aug 2, 10:31 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Chad Johnson said he has no doubt he can recapture the form that made him a perennial Pro Bowl receiver with the Cincinnati Bengals. 'Why? Because I'm good,' Johnson said. 'I'm really good. The odds have been stacked against me since 1978. I had a bad year. Finally. I handled my business for a decade straight. I hit an obstacle. I didn't complain. I didn't become a distraction. I took a bullet, worked this offseason, I'm here, still working. I'm not complaining. I'll be back to normal. I don't have a choice.'

Footballguys view: Let's be honest, at best Johnson will be 60-70 catch wideout with 800-900 yards. He could be a good bye/injury filler in start three wide receiver leagues, but he won't approach the production he had in his prime.

Miami Dolphins WR Chad Johnson has impressed head coach Joe Philbin at the start of training camp. 'He's very serious. He's very passionate about what he does. We like his work ethic, the energy, the enthusiasm that he brings,' Philbin noted.

Miami Dolphins WR Chad Johnson said he expects to have a rebound season in 2012, primarily because he is no longer being muzzled. 'My personality was controlled last year (in New England),' Johnson said. 'You didn't hear me at all last year. Zero. Zilch. When my mouth is running, it forces me to perform. It's never been vindictive. I never got anybody in trouble ... One of the things I like about being here, that's so refreshing, and is such a weight off my back, is I can be me, whatever that entails. When I can be me, I am loose. Everything just flows for me. Miami Dolphins WR Chad Ochocinco was in a courthouse Monday, July 23, for a hearing finalizing a process that allowed him to legally change his name back to Johnson. He originally changed his name to Ochocinco in 2008.

Footballguys view: We'd like to see Chad Johnson get his focus back to football. He should stop tweeting so much and spend more time studying his playbook. Johnson is not the same player he used to be, but may be the Dolphins most productive WR in 2012.

Dolphins | Chad Ochocinco expected to make roster    Sun Jul 22, 02:28 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Chad Ochocinco is expected to make the final roster unless he has trouble learning the offense during training camp.

NFL | Former executive says Chad Ochocinco not disciplined     Thu Jul 12, 09:45 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Chad Ochocinco might still have a burst of speed at age 34; however, he lacks discipline at the receiver position, according to one longtime general manager. 'His best asset is his ability to get separation on routes,' the general manager said. 'But you want a disciplined receiver to be in the right spots, and that's not what this guy is. I would not have touched him. His personality issues are not going to change. I don't know if he's ever going to get it.'

Footballguys view: Even a casual NFL fan would be able to tell you that Ochocinco was not disciplined. It seemed like QB Tom Brady went out of his way several times to help Ochocinco learn the offense in New England and it just didn't work. Ochocinco is now trying to learn a complicated Mike Sherman offense in Miami.

Dolphins | Chad Ochocinco coming along    Thu Jul 12, 12:07 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Chad Ochocinco looked good in offseason workouts, making a few acrobatic catches. However, the key is how quickly he will be able to learn the offense after having just four and a half weeks to study, all the while getting married and having a reality television show at the same time. One longtime NFL general manager had good and bad words on Ochocinco. 'His best asset is his ability to get separation on routes,' the anonymous GM said. 'But you want a disciplined receiver to be in the right spots, and that's not what this guy is. I would not have touched him. His personality issues are not going to change. I don't know if he's ever going to get it.'

Footballguys view: Mike Sherman's offense is based off timing and being in sync with the QB. Ochocinco had trouble picking up the Patriots complex offense, so we're in a 'wait and see' mode with the veteran WR. He's arguably their most talented WR on the roster, but we like him best as a WR5 in fantasy terms to mitigate your risk.

Dolphins | Chad Ochocinco plans to play on    Tue Jul 3, 05:32 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Chad Ochocinco said Tuesday, July 3, that he plans to play in the NFL for several more seasons. 'I'm going to play 'til I'm 40 years old, and this year I'm going to show the world I can,' Ochocinco said.

Footballguys view: Ochocinco with a little hyperbole here. If he doesn't put up better numbers this year for the Dolphins than he did last year for the Patriots his time in the NFL could be done.

Patriots | Chad Ochocinco struggled with playbook    Sun Jun 24, 01:41 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Chad Ochocinco told the team before they sign him that he has problems learning the New England Patriots playbook.

Footballguys view: At least Ochocinco was honest with his new team. The Patriots seemed to go out of their way to accommodate the veteran WR but in the end it didn't work out. The Dolphins have a poorly talented WR corps, so Ochocinco has a real chance to produce as one of their top WRs. He's coming off the board at WR53 in the early 12th round in standard 12-team leagues.

Dolphins | Chad Ochocinco needs to get caught up    Wed Jun 20, 08:43 AM

Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin acknowledged WR Chad Ochocinco needs to caught up on the team's playbook after signing late in the offseason. 'We teach our offense in nine segments, and he missed seven of them, and that's 78 percent that he missed, so he's behind a little bit,' Philbin said.

Footballguys view: Ochocinco has been impressing teammates in minicamp, but needs a lot of work getting caught up in the offense. He struggled to learn the Patriots complex playbook, and could have the same problem with OC Mike Sherman's scheme. The Dolphins don't have much talent at WR so Ochocinco has an opportunity to produce at a higher level than he did last year. That being said we can't see Ochocinco as anything more than a WR4 or WR5 you can pick up in the late 12th round.

Dolphins | Chad Ochocinco looking good in workouts    Tue Jun 19, 03:52 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Chad Ochocinco looked in shape and impressive during organized team activities Tuesday, June 19, while working with the second team offense. 'He definitely has a lot of ability left,' rookie QB Ryan Tannehill said. 'Today was the first day he really flashed.'

Footballguys view: Ochocinco struggled to pick up the Patriots complex offense and his struggles could continue under new Dolphins OC Mike Sherman. The Dolphins don't have an impressive WR corps, so there's an opportunity for Ochocinco to have better stats that he did last year. That being said, we still can't recommend him as anything more than a late round flier in your fantasy drafts.

Dolphins | Chad Ochocinco receiving minimum    Tue Jun 12, 04:43 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Chad Ochocinco will receive the veteran's minimum of $925,000 for his one-year deal. However, he can double that figure to just over $2 million through incentives, but he'll need to haul in 80 catches in order to do so. He caught only 15 balls last year. There is no guaranteed money in the deal.

Footballguys view: Ochocinco is no lock to even make the team, but the Dolphins clearly coveted his services. The depth chart is weak enough there for Ochocinco to start, so if he can't earn a large role, he's probably done as a productive pro.

Dolphins | Chad Ochocinco signs    Mon Jun 11, 08:39 PM

The Miami Dolphins signed free-agent WR Chad Ochocinco (Patriots) to a one-year deal Monday, June 11.

Footballguys view: Ochocinco actually has a chance to start in Miami. With only Davone Bess and Brian Hartline standing in his way, a receiver of his caliber should be able to win a job with the first team. The problem is that he had Tom Brady in his corner in New England, and still couldn't produce. It is surprising that he could get a job so quickly with players like Plaxico Burress and Braylon Edwards still unsigned.
