Giants | Jerrel Jernigan won't be retained    Wed Mar 4, 11:46 PM

The New York Giants informed impending free-agent WR Jerrel Jernigan that he will not be brought back.

Footballguys view: The writing was on the wall here. The re-signing of WR Kevin Ogletree likely sealed his fate. Jernigan enters free agency as a low-end player who has flashed just a little bit as a receiver. Some team could be interested in Jernigan as a return man.

Giants | Two promoted from PS    Tue Sep 16, 05:57 PM

New York Giants WR Julian Talley and LB Dan Fox were promoted to the team's active roster from the practice squad Tuesday, Sept. 16, filling the spots left by WR Jerrel Jernigan and CB Walter Thurmond, who were both placed on Reserve/Injured.

Footballguys view: With Jernigan out for the year, the Giants turn to Talley to take his spot. They've got the market cornered on UMASS wide receivers (Victor Cruz is the other one), and Talley is speedy in the open field. He can give them decent depth at wide receiver, but he's not the threat as a receiver that Jernigan was. Talley can also be used as a return man.

Giants | Jerrel Jernigan in starting lineup    Tue Sep 2, 01:24 PM

New York Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan has been starting at wide receiver opposite WR Rueben Randle with WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) sidelined. WR Victor Cruz is working out of the slot in three-wide receiver formations. WRs Corey Washington and Preston Parker are the other receivers on the roster.

Footballguys view: Jernigan finished off last season with a bang. In the final two games of the regular season, Jernigan combined for 12 catches, 170 yards and two touchdowns. He should be on your waiver wire speed dial this season.

Giants | Receivers inconsistent    Tue Aug 19, 11:19 AM

New York Giants WRs Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle, Jerrel Jernigan and Mario Manningham have not made many big plays this preseason. Cruz initially caught a long play-action pass Saturday, Aug. 16, but dropped it. Randle has one catch for 12 yards in three games. Jernigan has not carried over his momentum from late last season, per head coach Tom Coughlin, and also dropped a throw from Eli Manning Saturday. Corey Washington has three touchdowns but received fewer first-string practice reps than Manningham in first-string practice reps Monday, Aug. 18.

Giants | Jerrel Jernigan practicing    Wed Aug 13, 02:29 PM

New York Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan (knee) is participating in practice Wednesday, Aug. 13, and is working with the first-team offense.

Footballguys view: Jernigan had a strong finish to the season last year. We'll see if he can carry that momentum over to this season. We like him as a slot receiver for the Giants, but we'll have to see how the pecking order is established behind Victor Cruz. Jernigan, Rueben Randle and rookie Odell Beckham Jr. are all competing for targets and playing time.

Giants | Jerrel Jernigan sits    Tue Aug 12, 02:15 PM

New York Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan (knee) is not participating in practice Tuesday, Aug. 12.

Footballguys view: Jernigan had an opportunity with rookie Odell Beckham struggling to get back on the field early in camp, but he has to stay healthy to build on that.

Giants | Several don't practice    Mon Aug 11, 03:44 PM

New York Giants WRs Victor Cruz (undisclosed), Jerrel Jernigan (undisclosed), FB John Conner (concussion), RB Peyton Hillis (ankle, foot), DT Mike Patterson (shoulder) and WR Marcus Harris all missed practice Monday, Aug. 11.

Footballguys view: That's a big group of players, and it's another three wide receivers out of practice. The Giants are already dealing with rookie Odell Beckham Jr. and a nagging hamstring injury that has slowed him down in camp.

Giants | Charles James could make roster as punt returner    Tue Jul 29, 10:37 PM

New York Giants CB Charles James could make the roster as a punt returner as a result of injuries to RB David Wilson (neck) and WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) and poor play by CB Jerrel Jernigan. Jernigan dropped three punts in practice Tuesday, July 29.

Giants | Odell Beckham Jr. expected to miss a week    Tue Jul 29, 06:35 PM

New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) is expected to be out at least another week, although tests on his hamstring came back negative Tuesday, July 29.

Footballguys view: The Giants are hoping Beckham can be a playmaker at receiver in their new West Coast offense under OC Ben McAdoo. He'll compete for a starting spot against WR Jerrel Jernigan.

Giants | Jerrel Jernigan in mix to start    Mon Jul 28, 11:30 PM

New York Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan is expected to compete with rookie WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) for a starting spot.

Footballguys view: Jernigan came on at the end of 2013. In the final two games of the regular season, Jernigan combined for 12 catches, 170 yards and two touchdowns. He's hoping to carry that momentum over to this season. If Beckham is slowed down further by his hamstring injury, Jernigan could earn a larger role to start the season.

Giants | Agree to terms with Mario Manningham    Tue Mar 18, 12:43 PM

The New York Giants agreed to terms with WR Mario Manningham (49ers) on a one-year deal Tuesday, March 18. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: As officer Barbrady says, "Nothing to see here people." Manningham has never been the same since tearing his left ACL and PCL in late December of 2012. He spent four seasons with the Giants before moving on to the 49ers. Now he's back to compete for a roster spot. Manningham is around fourth on the depth chart, and there's no guarantee he makes the final roster.

Giants | Jerrel Jernigan finishes on high note    Sun Dec 29, 05:48 PM

New York Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan finished the regular season with a first-half touchdown reception and 49-yard touchdown run in the Week 17 game against the Washington Redskins.

Footballguys view: Jernigan would step into a bigger role if Hakeem Nicks signs elsewhere in free agency. He was healthier and more prominent than Rueben Randle down the stretch, so Jernigan could have fantasy relevance in 2014.

Giants | Rueben Randle, Jerrel Jernigan to showcase their skills    Fri Dec 20, 07:46 PM

New York Giants WRs Rueben Randle and Jerrel Jernigan (knee) will see more opportunities in the final two regular season games with WR Victor Cruz (knee) done for the season. Randle has already had success this year, scoring six touchdowns through 14 games after scoring three all of last year. He has 37 grabs for 571 yards. Jernigan is questionable for Week 16 against the Detroit Lions but said he was 'feeling all right.' Jernigan, who had seven catches for 57 yards last week, would likely replace Cruz in the slot position.

Footballguys view: Both are worth watching for gauging their dynasty prospects, but Eli Manning's play makes it very hard to trust them even in the deepest of redraft leagues.

Giants | Victor Cruz could go on IR    Wed Dec 18, 03:26 PM

The New York Giants may consider placing WR Victor Cruz (knee, concussion) on Injured Reserve because of his knee injury and concussion. If he is placed on IR, WR Rueben Randle likely would become the No. 2 wide receiver with WR Jerrel Jernigan being the No. 3 wide receiver.

Footballguys view: With the season over, shutting Cruz down makes all the sense in the world though the timing is a disaster for owners. He's been the only player really worth having in the Giants' passing offense.

Giants | WR race loses one combatant    Sun Aug 11, 09:21 PM

New York Giants WRs Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks, Rueben Randle, Louis Murphy and Jerrel Jernigan are expected to be the team's top five wideouts. After that, there is a battle between Ramses Barden, Keith Carlos, Kevin X. Hardy and Julian Talley for the sixth receiver job, if the team elects to keep that many.   Giants | Rueben Randle ready for bigger role    Wed Jul 24, 12:53 PM

New York Giants WR Rueben Randle turned heads during the offseason program, and he is ready for a bigger role in the offense behind WRs Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks. However, Randle is not locked into the third receiver job yet, as he needs to hold off WRs Ramses Barden, Jerrel Jernigan and Louis Murphy, among others.

Footballguys view: Randle is talented and has a nice mixture of size and speed. He was raw coming out of LSU but has the upside to be a quality starter and impact player for the Giants. The Giants may rely on him more than some think if Hakeem Nicks battles with injury once again this year.

Giants | Jerrel Jernigan could be kick returner    Mon Jul 22, 01:33 PM

New York Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan could be the team's primary kick returner this season if they do not want RB David Wilson to handle the role since he is expected to be the starting running back.

Footballguys view: The Giants could use Wilson on limited touches as a return man. Jernigan can be a quality returner because of his quickness and change of direction ability. RB Da'Rel Scott could also receive the opportunity to return some kicks this season.

Giants | Ramses Barden re-signs    Thu May 23, 01:17 PM

The New York Giants re-signed WR Ramses Barden to an undisclosed deal Thursday, May 23.

Giants | Increased reps for other WRs    Wed May 22, 10:09 PM

New York Giants WRs Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks were missing at organized team activities Wednesday, May 22, over contract disputes, so QB Eli Manning was working with WRs Jerrel Jernigan, Louis Murphy and Rueben Randle during the session.

Footballguys view: It's good for the young WRs like Jernigan and Randle to get more experience catching passes from Manning. Murphy traveled with Manning to Duke University earlier this year to work out and catch passes.

Giants | Jerrel Jernigan taking advantage of opportunity    Wed May 22, 01:22 PM

New York Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan has shown progress as Victor Cruz remains absent from OTAs. WR Hakeem Nicks said his teammate has been adjusting well to the slot role, which fits him. 'I feel like he got a lot of reps,' Nicks added. 'He's a little older now, he's a little mature. He got more patient in his routes. ... He's catching the ball a lot better, and he's ready to step up.'

Footballguys view: Jernigan can be a good slot WR because of his speed, quickness and run after the catch ability. He's competing with Rueben Randle to be the team's third WR behind Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz.

Giants | Looking for Jerrel Jernigan to step up    Sat May 11, 02:10 PM

New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said he believes WR Jerrel Jernigan has the opportunity to step his game up during offseason workouts since he will be the main slot receiver with restricted free-agent WR Victor Cruz sitting out the workouts. 'I think it's about time that he steps up. And I think we feel he has enough ability and he's been here now long enough. Until Victor gets back, he'll be the main guy inside at the slot position. It's a chance for him to shine and step forward and do the things that we believe he can do,' Gilbride said.

Footballguys view: Jernigan is dangerous in the open field because of his speed and quickness. He's yet to develop as a pro and 2013 is a make or break season for him.

Giants | Jerrel Jernigan could be kick returner    Thu Feb 14, 09:18 PM

New York Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan could be used as a kick returner next season if the team wants to lighten RB David Wilson's load as a returner since he is expected to be the starting running back.

Footballguys view: Jernigan is limited as a receiver but has great open field speed. He also makes cuts at speed and is difficult for defenders to track down because of his quickness.

Giants | Jerrel Jernigan might get chance    Thu Feb 7, 12:32 AM

The New York Giants are looking for a consistent third receiver behind restricted free-agent WR Victor Cruz and oft-injured WR Hakeem Nicks. WRs Ramses Barden and Domenik Hixon are each impending free agents, which leaves WR Jerrel Jernigan to battle WR Rueben Randle for the third receiver job. Jernigan and Randle are both expected to show growth during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Jernigan has the skill set to be a solid third WR. He's quick in and out of his breaks and has the moves in the open field to be dangerous after the catch.

New York Giants WRs Jerrel Jernigan, Rueben Randle, Domenik Hixon and Ramses Barden are still in the mix for the No. 3 wide receiver job.

Giants | Dominik Hixon starts with first team    Sat Jul 28, 01:31 AM

New York Giants WR Dominik Hixon saw time with the first time opposite WR Victor Cruz. He is battling WRs Jerrel Jernigan and Ramses Barden for the No. 3 wide receiver job in training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: We can't forget about rookie WR Rueben Randle here. Randle is the most talented of the backup WRs behind Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz. We expect him to eventually win the WR3 job. Randle has a skill set similar to that of Buccaneers WR Vincent Jackson. He wasn't that productive in college due to poor QB play, but could be a star for the Giants.

New York Giants WR Domenik Hixon may enter training camp as the favorite for the No. 3 wide receiver job over WRs Rueben Randle, Ramses Barden and Jerrel Jernigan.

Footballguys view: Hixon has a lot of talent and versatility as a WR but injuries have prevented him from playing up to his potential. He could begin the season as the team's WR3 but we feel rookie Rueben Randle will eventually take over at that position.

Giants | David Wilson is franchise's first player born in 1990s    Fri Apr 27, 01:06 AM

New York Giants RB David Wilson becomes the first player in franchise history born in the 1990s. CB Prince Amukamara, DL Marvin Austin, WR Jerrel Jernigan and DL Jason Pierre-Paul were all born in 1989. The Giants have won just two Super Bowls in Wilson's lifetime.

Footballguys view: Wilson gives the World Champion Giants better depth at the RB position. He reminds many in the scouting community of Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles because of his speed and explosive playmaking ability. His selection puts a major dent in the dynasty stock of a guy like Da-Rel Scott.
