Cowboys | A.J. Jenkins signs with Dallas    Tue May 26, 12:57 PM

Free-agent WR A.J. Jenkins (Chiefs) signed an undisclosed deal with the Dallas Cowboys Tuesday, May 26, according to a source. Jenkins was the 30th overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2012, but he didn't catch a pass in three games with them. Dallas wanted to add a veteran receiver with WR Dez Bryant not taking part in the offseason training program. WRs Terrance Williams and Devin Street have worked with the first team in Bryant's absence, with WR Cole Beasley playing the slot.

Footballguys view: It's still amazing to us that Jenkins was actually a first-round pick. That was then, and this is now as Jenkins tries to stick on his third team in four years. He's no guarantee to make the final roster, and Jenkins has no fantasy value--even in the deepest of leagues.

Cowboys | Work out several players    Fri May 22, 06:14 PM

Free-agent WR A.J. Jenkins (Chiefs), WR Kris Durham (Titans), WR Tommy Streeter (Jaguars), WR B.J. Cunningham (Bears) and RB Ronnie Wingo (Falcons) worked out for the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, May 21.

Footballguys view: We've always kept tabs on Cunningham in super deep dynasty leagues as he's bounced around the league. He's the best player on this list in our opinion, and the Cowboys did not sign him (or anyone from this group).

Chiefs | Waive A.J. Jenkins     Tue Feb 17, 02:02 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs waived WR A.J. Jenkins Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Footballguys view: Jenkins has now washed out with two teams, and his NFL future is in serious doubt. Originally a first-round pick by the 49ers in 2012, Jenkins has never been able to translate his speed and agility into actual production. With so many good wide receivers already in the league, we can't imagine teams being hot and heavy to add a disappointment like Jenkins.

Chiefs | A.J. Jenkins placed on IR    Sat Nov 22, 12:41 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed WR A.J. Jenkins (shoulder) on the Reserve/Injured list.

Footballguys view: This story has no fantasy relevance because the Chiefs have no wide receiver outside of Dwayne Bowe that is worth rostering. Even in deeper dynasty leagues, this news isn't that big.

Chiefs | Friday practice report for Week 11    Fri Nov 14, 04:56 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Donnie Avery (groin) was limited in practice Friday, Nov. 14, and has been ruled out. DB Jamell Fleming (hamstring) and WR A.J. Jenkins (shoulder) both did not practice and have been ruled out. TE Anthony Fasano (knee) and CB Christopher Owens (knee) both did not practice and are questionable. CB Phillip Gaines (quadriceps, ankle) was limited in practice and is questionable. LB Tamba Hali (knee) was limited in practice and is probable. LB Josh Martin (hamstring), LB Josh Mauga (groin) and CB Sean Smith (groin) all fully practiced and are probable.

Kansas City Chiefs WR A.J. Jenkins will enter the starting lineup in Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers to replace WR Donnie Avery (hernia). Jenkins has only four catches for 16 yards this year.

Footballguys view: Jenkins, oh sweet Jenkins, how you have tempted us before with your "upside" and "potential." But not this time! We won't fall for it. You are virtually unrosterable save for in the deepest of leagues. Avoid, dear friends! AVOID.

Chiefs | Several injuries practice    Mon Jul 21, 01:07 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (knee), WR Kyle Williams (knee), WR A.J. Jenkins (hamstring) and CB Christopher Owens (hamstring) participated in practice Monday, July 21.

Footballguys view: The team really likes Kelce, and he should be the starter at tight end if healthy this year. Kelce is tough and knows how to use his size in order to "box out" defenders. The Chiefs desperately need weapons in the passing game besides Dwayne Bowe and Jamaal Charles. We'll see if Kelce can be that guy. Keep him as a low-end TE2 with upside or on your waiver wire speed dial this year.

  Chiefs | A.J. Jenkins hasn't seized opportunity    Sun Jun 15, 05:16 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR A.J. Jenkins has yet to challenge WR Donnie Avery for the No. 2 wide receiver spot.

Footballguys view: Is anyone surprised? Jenkins was a surprise first-round pick by the 49ers in 2012 and he failed to make an impact. He's a nice reserve receiver, but to expect him to be any sort of quality starter is folly.

Kansas City Chiefs WR A.J. Jenkins (hamstring), TE Travis Kelce (knee), WR Kyle Williams (knee) and CB David Van Dyke (undisclosed) missed practice Thursday, June 5. OT Eric Fisher (shoulder) was a limited participant.

Footballguys view: Fisher is the most critical piece to watch here as any issue at left tackle could be a disaster for the offense, but for the most part nobody should be worried at this point in the summer.

Chiefs | A.J. Jenkins sits    Tue Jun 3, 02:48 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR A.J. Jenkins (hamstring) did not participate in practice Tuesday, June 3.

Footballguys view: There's no need to think that Jenkins will ever be worth the first-round pick the 49ers spent on him in 2012. The Chiefs are desperate for wide receiver talent behind Dwayne Bowe, but we're not expecting much for Jenkins even if he gets more playing time in 2014.

Chiefs | Donnie Avery remains starter    Sat Apr 5, 11:37 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Donnie Avery is still listed as a starter, but it remains to be seen whether he will remain as a starter or even make the team. The team has high hopes for WR A.J. Jenkins, who could potentially take away some of Avery's playing time if Jenkins develops. The team also plans to draft at least one receiver, and if he is ready to help right away, Avery might be released.

Chiefs | QB saw progress from A.J. Jenkins    Sun Feb 9, 10:30 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith said he believes WR A.J. Jenkins made progress during the season, which allowed the team to put trust in Jenkins.

Footballguys view: Jenkins was dealt to the Chiefs for fellow bust, Jonathan Baldwin. The 49ers haven't gotten much out of Baldwin, but it sounds like the Chiefs may have gotten the better end of the deal.

Chiefs | Dwayne Bowe ruled out    Fri Dec 27, 03:25 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 17 against the San Diego Chargers.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs are going to rest their starters for most of the game. This means it's time for the backups to show what they can do. WR Junior Hemingway is Bowe's backup, but WR A.J. Jenkins could also see some targets as a result of Bowe's absence.

Chiefs | QB vouches for A.J. Jenkins    Wed Aug 21, 12:52 AM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers last year when they drafted WR A.J. Jenkins in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. The deal to acquire Jenkins wasn't Smith's, but the management did ask the signal caller for his input. 'We talked to Alex,' head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday, Aug. 20. 'Alex was very positive about it.'

Footballguys view: This move was expected. Jenkins worked with Smith last year as they both played for the 49ers. The 49ers shocked the draft community when they selected Jenkins in the first-round of the 2012 NFL draft. He's not as physically talented as Jonathan Baldwin, the player the Chiefs traded away to get Jenkins. We'll see if Jenkins can get his young career back on track with this fresh start.

49ers | Jonathan Baldwin acquired    Mon Aug 19, 12:23 PM

The San Francisco 49ers acquired WR Jonathan Baldwin from the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, Aug. 19, in exchange for WR A.J. Jenkins.

Footballguys view: It's a fresh start for Baldwin with the 49ers. He has the size/speed combination to be a quality player at the pro level but it just wasn't happening with the Chiefs. The 49ers are looking for additional help at the WR position since losing Michael Crabtree (Achilles') earlier this year. Baldwin will compete with guys like Kyle Williams, Austin Collie, and Ricardo Lockette for the WR2 spot opposite Anquan Boldin.

Chiefs | A.J. Jenkins acquired    Mon Aug 19, 12:20 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs acquired WR A.J. Jenkins from the San Francisco 49ers Monday, Aug. 19, in exchange for WR Jonathan Baldwin.

Footballguys view: Jenkins was a first-round pick for the 49ers in 2012 but failed to record a single catch as a rookie. He was disappointing in camp and suffered from lapses in concentration and too many dropped passes. He'll get a fresh start with the Chiefs here and has experience catching passes from QB Alex Smith from their time together with the 49ers.

49ers | A.J. Jenkins does not get reception    Sat Aug 17, 11:59 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins played most of the first half in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 16, but did not catch a pass because he was being covered by Kansas City Chiefs CB Sean Smith. Jenkins did catch a 21-yard pass but it was nullified by a penalty.

Footballguys view: Jenkins continues to disappoint and may have fallen behind in the competition for the WR2 job opposite Anquan Boldin. He was the 49ers first-round pick in 2012 but failed to record a catch as a rookie. Jenkins has been plagued by drops in practice and may be behind guys like Kyle Williams on the depth chart.

49ers | A.J. Jenkins has to compete for roster spot    Fri Aug 16, 05:34 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins is competing with several other wide receivers for a spot on the final roster. Jenkins has had an up-and-down training camp and fumbled the only catch he had during the first preseason game.

Footballguys view: Unless Jenkins dramatically improves, he won't deserve a spot on the final roster. If he does make the team, it's probably because the team wants a chance to recoup a contribution in exchange for the first-round guaranteed money they gave Jenkins last year.

  49ers | A.J. Jenkins struggles again    Tue Aug 13, 08:34 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins didn't catch a single pass in practice Monday, Aug. 12.

Footballguys view: Jenkins is looking more and more like a bust. He was the team's first-round pick in 2012 but failed to record a catch as a rookie. Beat writers have noted that he has as many drops in practice as he does big plays. Jenkins is competing for the WR2 job opposite Anquan Boldin.

  49ers | A.J. Jenkins sees fewer reps     Mon Aug 12, 05:48 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins received fewer reps than usual during practice Sunday, Aug. 11, and was not thrown a pass until practice was almost over.

Footballguys view: The team wants to see more from the 2012 first-round pick. Jenkins has had plenty of drops in training camp and has not impressed in the preseason.

49ers | A.J. Jenkins not worried about preseason performance    Fri Aug 9, 03:33 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins said he will not worry about the fumble he lost during the team's first preseason game. 'Hopefully, I've made some strides,' Jenkins said. 'It's the first preseason game. We have three more games left. It's a long year. No need to panic and get all discouraged. Just got to keep watching film.'

Footballguys view: Jenkins needs to elevate his game. The 2012 first-round pick failed to record a catch last year and has been average in camp. Beat writers for the 49ers say Jenkins has as many drops as he does big catches in practice. Jenkins is competing for the WR2 job opposite Anquan Boldin in 2013.

49ers | Three receivers back on field    Mon Aug 5, 02:27 AM

The San Francisco 49ers had three injured wide receivers back on the practice field Sunday, Aug. 4. WR's A.J. Jenkins (hamstring), Kassim Osgood (leg) and Kyle Williams (hamstring) all returned to the field, and all three are candidates to start opposite WR Anquan Boldin.

Footballguys view: Both Jenkins and Williams are competing to be the starter this season opposite Anquan Boldin. The initial depth chart was released as the team prepares for their first preseason game and Williams as listed as the current starter. Jenkins was the team's first-round pick in 2012 but failed to record a catch as a rookie. He'll have to start flashing his potential in year two to avoid being labeled as a bust.

49ers | Three WRs sit due to muscle strains    Thu Aug 1, 01:03 AM

San Francisco 49ers WRs A.J. Jenkins (muscle strain), Kassim Osgood (muscle strain) and Kyle Williams (muscle strain) each missed practice Wednesday, July 31, for a second straight day due to undisclosed muscle strains suffered last week.

Footballguys view: This is not good for the 49ers. They're trying to find WR2 to start opposite of Anquan Boldin. Jenkins was their first-round pick in 2012 but failed to record a catch as a rookie. He hasn't been standing out in camp and whispers of 'bust' are floating around the facility. These guys need to get healthy and get as many reps as they possibly can to build experience with QB Colin Kaepernick.

  49ers | A.J. Jenkins leaves practice    Tue Jul 30, 02:04 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins (hamstring) left practice early to tend to a right hamstring issue, which does not appear to be serious.

Footballguys view: The injury is not serious but it could put Jenkins behind in the competition for the WR2 job opposite Anquan Boldin. Jenkins was the team's first-round pick in 2012 but failed to record a catch as a rookie. Our very own Cecil Lammey watched Jenkins during the week of practice for the 2012 Shrine Game and thought Jenkins would make a nice sixth-round pick. He was clearly overdrafted and could be a bust if he doesn't start to produce as a pro.

49ers | A.J. Jenkins not taking control of No. 2 WR job    Mon Jul 29, 06:37 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins has not distinguished himself as the team's No. 2 wide receiver during training camp.

Footballguys view: Jenkins was a surprise first-round pick by the 49ers in 2012. He failed to record a catch as a rookie but the team is hoping he can elevate his game this season. It's too early to call him a bust but Jenkins needs to start playing up to his potential.

  49ers | Mario Manningham a month away    Fri Jul 26, 04:22 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Mario Manningham (knee) is roughly a month away from returning to action on the field, and the competition behind WR Anquan Boldin will be furious. WRs Kyle Williams, Ricardo Lockette, A.J. Jenkins, Quinton Patton and Marlon Moore will be looking to step up in the absence of WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles').

Footballguys view: The 49ers could choose to platoon wide receivers in this role, with Lockette being the fastest, Patton the best after the catch, Williams the most experienced, and Jenkins the biggest investment. Even if one receiver rules the role, they will likely be the third option at best in a run-heavy offense, and that's only until Manningham is ready to resume his role.

49ers | A.J. Jenkins sees time with starters    Thu Jul 25, 09:45 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins spent most of his time with the first-team offense during practice Thursday, July 25.

Footballguys view: Kyle Williams was just cleared to play, and Mario Manningham might be back in a month or so. Jenkins still has marginal value in redraft leagues, but this is good news for his dynasty stock. He reportedly had a slight lead over Ricardo Lockette and Quinton Patton coming out of OTAs.

49ers | Trio of receivers making progress    Tue Jul 23, 12:00 AM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh was upbeat about WRs A.J. Jenkins, Quinton Patton and Ricardo Lockette, who will line up at split end to compete for WR Michael Crabtree's (Achilles') starting job while he is out injured. 'I feel like they're making a lot of progress,' Harbaugh said. 'I feel good about where that stands right now. Continued competition will continue to be good for our team and those youngsters.'

Footballguys view: The 49ers could use a form of WRBC if no single player emerges from this group. Jenkins was a first-round pick in 2012 but failed to record a catch during his rookie season. Patton was the team's fourth-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft. He's got the size and quickness to beat the jam at the line of scrimmage. Patton is incredibly raw as a route runner and needs to improve that area of his game. Lockette is a downfield receiver who can eat up cushions and get on top of the defense in a hurry.

49ers | Quinton Patton has legitimate shot to start    Sun Jul 21, 08:13 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Quinton Patton has as good a shot as any of his competition, which is believed to include WRs A.J. Jenkins and Ricardo Lockette, for the No. 2 wide receiver job behind WR Anquan Boldin. Patton has good athletic ability, size and speed, as well as energy and eagerness.

Footballguys view: Patton is a strong runner after the catch, and he plays over his middling measureables. He is a competitor and he should keep pressure on Jenkins all summer.

  49ers | A.J. Jenkins appears more confident    Sun Jul 21, 08:11 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins is among the group of receivers expected to challenge for a starting job opposite WR Anquan Boldin during training camp and the preseason. Jenkins reportedly is stronger and looked more confident during spring workouts.

Footballguys view: Jenkins has reportedly opened up a small lead on Ricardo Lockette and Quinton Patton, but there's all of camp and the preseason ahead for that to change. Mario Manningham should also be ready to play at some point this season, which puts a cramp in the upside of any wide receiver that wins the #2 job opposite Anquan Boldin.

49ers | A.J. Jenkins has slight lead for starting job    Fri Jun 21, 06:47 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins appears to have a slight edge over WRs Quinton Patton and Ricardo Lockette for one of the starting wide receiver jobs entering training camp.

Footballguys view: The winner won't be worth targeting except in very deep leagues because Anquan Boldin and Vernon Davis will be the top dogs in this limited passing game. Dynasty leaguers who have held onto AJ Jenkins should be pleased that he's ahead, but it doesn't seem that promising that he could only open a slight edge on a fourth-round pick who reportedly showed up with a lot of work to do at rookie minicamp.

49ers | Kyle Williams early favorite for X spot    Mon Jun 17, 01:11 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Kyle Williams is the pre-training-camp favorite for the 'X' wide receiver spot, ahead of A.J. Jenkins, who holds the slot advantage, and others.

Footballguys view: The 'X' receiver is the split end who lines up on the line of scrimmage furthest away from the tight end. On the line Williams can be jammed by the cornerback at the snap. He'll have to prove he can consistently beat the jam with quickness and speed to get into his route. We'll see Anquan Boldin as the 'Z' receiver (flanker) lined up a yard or two off the line on the opposite side of the field.

  49ers | HC talks up A.J. Jenkins    Tue Jun 11, 11:12 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh praised WR A.J. Jenkins Tuesday, June 11, for his work so far this offseason. 'A.J. had his best week of football since he's been a 49ers the last four days of OTAs,' Harbaugh said.

Footballguys view: Jenkins failed to record a catch last year even though the team selected him in the first-round of the 2012 NFL draft. He's added muscle this offseason to help him beat the jam at the line of scrimmage. Jenkins struggles to get separation and has a lot of room for improvement this year.
