Browns | Jeff Janis will need to earn roster spot    Mon Jul 2, 12:32 PM

Cleveland Browns WR Jeff Janis will need to be one of the standout performers during training camp if he wants a chance to make the 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: With Josh Gordon, Jarvis Landry and Corey Coleman all assured spots -- and targets -- there's only so much room and so many scraps for the other eight receivers. Janis has had moments, but he's going to have to be consistent to keep his roster spot. From a fantasy standpoint, there won't be much impact from any of the receivers past Coleman on the depth chart, barring injury or another Gordon suspension.

Browns | Cleveland reels in Jeff Janis    Fri Mar 30, 12:52 PM

Free-agent WR Jeff Janis (Packers) agreed to terms on an undisclosed contract with the Cleveland Browns on Friday, March 30.

Footballguys view: Janis has flashed as a receiver in the preseason, but his best role should be on special teams. He should mix in as the no4 receiver for the Browns in 2018.

Packers | Limited role for Jeff Janis?    Sun Jul 23, 09:20 PM

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis should make the 53-man roster this season but will likely be limited to a role on special teams, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Janis only has 15 catches during his three-year pro career and his role won't grow unless there are injuries in front of him on the depth chart.

Packers | Jeff Janis could be on the bubble    Fri Jul 21, 02:10 AM

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis could be in danger of not making the team, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, after the Packers invested draft picks on WRs Malachi Dupre and DeAngelo Yancey as well as the emergence of WR Geronimo Allison. Janis did little as a receiver last season but has been one of their top performers on special teams.

Footballguys view: Every couple of years there emerges a Packers wide receiver fans and fantasy owners are drawn to like a moth to flame. And like that moth, inevitably it all ends in flame and tears. Janis is a guy who Packers fans raved about for several years but who never fulfilled that promise. We have no real expectation that changes this year IF he makes the team, and that won't happen if a hungrier special teams ace emerges. You can safely stop moving towards the flame now otherwise you will get burned.

He underwent X-rays in recent days to confirm that the screws inserted had stayed in place, and team doctors believe the bone would be fully healed in six weeks.

Packers | Jeff Janis out a few weeks    Mon Aug 15, 05:20 PM

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (finger) was told he'll be sidelined four to six weeks following surgery to put screws in the bones around his index finger.

Footballguys view: That timetable means Janis is unlikely to be ready for the start of the regular season. He was competing for the no.3 WR job behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb, but now Janis is going to have to wait for his time to shine. In the meantime Jared Abbrederis, Ty Montgomery and Davante Adams will continue to battle for that spot.

Packers | Jeff Janis has fractured hand    Sat Aug 13, 09:29 AM

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis (hand) may miss significant time because at least one of the bones in his hand is fractured, according a source. Janis suffered the injury during practice Wednesday, Aug. 10, and did not play in the first preseason game.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the young WR here. Janis was competing for the no.3 spot on the depth chart behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. We'll know more about his recovery time in the future, but now the job behind those top two will go to someone like Ty Montgomery, Jared Abbrederis or Davante Adams.

Packers | Jared Abbrederis making plays in camp    Sun Jul 31, 05:33 PM

Green Bay Packers WR Jared Abbrederis has impressed in camp while WR Davante Adams and WR Jeff Janis have been quiet in the early going.

Footballguys view: Abbrederis should be Aaron Rodgers' choice to win snaps at the third wide receiver position because of his precise route-running and timing. The Wisconsin product has to stay healthy to fulfill those wishes, but if he can, he'll be on our early season waiver wire watch list.

Packers | Jeff Janis receiving high-level education    Sat Jul 30, 06:32 PM

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis has been a pet project of sorts for QB Aaron Rodgers early in training camp, according to quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt.

Footballguys view: Keep this on your mental back-burner just in case we see Janis emerge during the preseason. He's competing with guys like Davante Adams, Ty Montgomery and Jared Abbrederis to be the team's No.3 WR behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb.

Packers | Jeff Janis could be speed burner    Thu Jul 14, 12:15 AM

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis has nearly identical measurables to WR Jordy Nelson, and he posted a 40-yard dash in 4.42 seconds at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine with a vertical leap of 37 1/2 inches. If he proves this summer that his route running and knowledge of the offense are up to speed, he might add an element that the Green Bay offense desperately needs. 'He's obviously gifted very well with his athleticism, his jumping ability and his speed. He just needs to get to a level where he's not thinking as much and his instincts take over,' QB Aaron Rodgers said.

Footballguys view: Janis has the measurables and size but has only rarely capitalized on those attributes. Yes he has speed and yes he has strength, but what he doesn't have is consistency. All of this is wishful thinking until we see otherwise, and Janis is no more than a flier - a WR8 for the most part - with upside if Randall Cobb or Jordy Nelson get injured.

Packers | Jeff Janis returning kicks    Wed Jun 15, 07:43 PM

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis has been receiving first-team repetitions with the kickoff return team. That could change when WR Ty Montgomery (ankle) returns, but Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette doesn't believe it will.

Footballguys view: Janis has the measurables but just can get the most out of his talent. The Packers are clearly trying to find a role for him as he figures it out but he's got to be running short on chances with head coach Mike McCarthy. As it stands, he won't be on any but the deepest rosters.

Packers | Jeff Janis praised by head coach    Tue Jun 7, 01:16 AM

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis received praise from head coach Mike McCarthy about his work during organized team activities (OTAs). 'Jeff Janis is doing a lot of good things. He just needs to continue to progress through the fundamentals of the position,' McCarthy said Monday, June 6. 'Special teams he had an excellent last year last year, graded out as one of our top players. I'd like to see him that that same step as a wide receiver.'

Footballguys view: Janis is easily worth a late-round flier if he wins the WR3 job with the Packers. His size/speed combination makes him more of an interesting option than Davante Adams. While Janis has upside, Adams is coming off a disappointing season which saw him continue to drop too many passes. Along with Janis and Adams, we'll see guys like Ty Montgomery and Jared Abbrederis compete for the WR3 spot behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb in 2016.

Packers | Davante Adams may not make team    Tue May 3, 03:09 PM

Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams' roster spot is not a lock for the 2016 season, in the opinion of Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. WRs Jared Abbrederis, Ty Montgomery, Jeff Janis and Trevor Davis are also not guaranteed roster spots.

Footballguys view: It's certainly possible as Adams is not a lock for the final roster. Without Jordy Nelson last year, the opportunity was there for Adams to do more and he failed miserably. He ended the season as the 83rd ranked WR in standard scoring fantasy leagues with 50 catches, 483 yards and only one touchdown. Adams will have to prove himself this year as the Packers have a talented group of WRs behind Nelson and Randall Cobb.

Packers | Jeff Janis a work in progress    Wed Mar 2, 01:04 PM

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis needs to improve his route running and learn how to better read defenses in the NFL. 'He kind of has a stiffness there, and Luke, he took that on about Week 7 there after the bye week, and you could see him improve. He just needs things like that. You only get so much time with your players compared to prior years, but I'm hoping he takes another big step.' Head coach Mike McCarthy said.

Footballguys view: Janis has been a favorite project for a lot of Green Bay fans, but seems unable to reach his potential. He has moments but we're not as excited as Packers fans. With Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb back together, Janis' opportunities may be limited as well.

Packers | Jeff Janis praised by Mike McCarthy    Tue Jan 19, 02:37 AM

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis posted just two receptions during the regular season, but he stepped up with seven grabs for 145 yards and two touchdowns in the playoff loss against the Arizona Cardinals. Head coach Mike McCarthy liked what he saw. 'As a receiver, he was inconsistent, had some chances, up-and-down (this season),' McCarthy said. 'But with that, I think he definitely learned from those experiences and just had a tremendous game against Arizona.'

Footballguys view: Janis saw his dynasty stock soar after a huge game against the Cardinals in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. With Jordy Nelson back next year, it will be interesting to see how the pecking order is established behind him and Randall Cobb. Janis will certainly be in the mix for that WR3 spot.

Packers | Jeff Janis big in loss    Sat Jan 16, 11:56 PM

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis had seven catches for 145 yards and two scores in a 26-20 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in the divisional round of the playoffs Saturday, Jan. 16.

Footballguys view: Who needs Davante Adams? Janis came through more than any other Packers receiver. We thought Jared Abbrederis might do more with Adams out, but it was Janis who stole the show. With the Packers season over, fantasy owners will have to wait to see Janis in action again. With Jordy Nelson returning next year, we'll have to see what kind of role Janis could carve out for himself.

Packers | GB offense lacking speed    Wed Nov 11, 12:10 PM

The Green Bay Packers have the slowest team in the league when it comes to skill positions in the passing game. The combined average 40-yard dash time of WRs Randall Cobb (4.55 seconds), Davante Adams (4.56), James Jones (4.6) plus TE Richard Rodgers (4.87) ranks as a league-worst 4.65 seconds. One of the biggest reasons the Packers receivers can't get open consistently this year is because of their lack of speed, according to an NFL scout. The loss of WR Jordy Nelson and his 4.51-second 40-yard dash has slowed this offense down. WRs Jeff Janis and Ty Montgomery are much faster, but neither is a top three receiver for the team right now, and Montgomery has missed the last two games with an ankle injury.

Footballguys view: The Packers mostly works in small movements down the field, which is limiting Aaron Rodgers upside. He's still a strong QB1, especially against the morose Lions defense, but this issue is showing up on Sundays.

Green Bay Packers WR James Jones is listed ahead of WR Jeff Janis on the Packers' depth chart.

Footballguys view: Dynasty owners take note here..in addition to re-draft owners who took a late-round flier in deeper leagues. Jones knows the system well, and he's likely to cut into the targets for guys like Ty Montgomery, as well as a little of Davante Adams' balls.

Packers | Jeff Janis hasn't won over QB yet    Wed Sep 2, 09:39 PM

Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis is in the running for the No. 3 receiver job with WR Ty Montgomery, but beat writer Rob Reischel notes that Janis hasn't won over QB Aaron Rodgers yet. 'Jeff will have some great days and some days where mentally he's making too many mistakes,' Rodgers said. 'The talent and athleticism are there. We just need to see from all those guys battling for those two spots just some more consistency.'

Footballguys view: These young receivers need to impress Rodgers if they want to produce. There is going to be a fierce competition for targets behind Randall Cobb and Davante Adams. Janis is super athletic and worth keeping an eye on in deeper leagues.
