Buccaneers | Hot hand situation at RB for Tampa Fri Nov 11, 04:33 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RBs Peyton Barber and Mike James are expected to split the main ball carrying duties against the Chicago Bears in Week 10 with RB Jacquizz Rodgers (foot) out and RB Doug Martin (hamstring) unlikely to play. Beat writer Greg Auman predicts a hot hand situation, where the carrier starting out well gets more carries as the game progresses.
Footballguys view: Barber is the better physical talent and he has had more experience with the team this year, but James had his moments during his first stint with the Bucs. If you have to pick one, Barber is probably the better bet, but James could come through as a desperation play. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mike James, re-signed earlier this week, had a carry for three yards with three receptions and 17 yards in the Week 9 game against the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, Nov. 3.

Buccaneers | Mike James released Tue Sep 29, 12:31 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mike James was released Tuesday, Sept. 29.
Footballguys view: It's a tough spot for James if he's not going to make a Bucs roster that could use quality RB depth. He was their fourth-string back behind Doug Martin, Charles Sims and Bobby Rainey, and James had not been active this year. James should get another shot somewhere eventually, but even in dynasty leagues we moved on some time ago. |

Buccaneers | Mike James doubtful to play Saturday Sun Aug 17, 03:51 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mike James (shoulder) is unlikely to play in the team's next preseason game against the Buffalo Bills Saturday, Aug. 23, according to head coach Lovie Smith.
Footballguys view: If this is a multi-week injury, Bobby Rainey will get on the field a decent amount early this year. Third-round pick Charles Sims is already out 12-14 weeks, so Rainey is the last man standing behind Doug Martin at the moment. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Brandon Magee (ankle), DE William Gholston (shoulder), CB Rashaan Melvin (ankle), RB Mike James (shoulder) and SS Major Wright (back) left the team's preseason game with injuries Saturday, Aug. 16.
Footballguys view: Charles Sims is out for 12-14 weeks, so the Bucs embarrassment of riches at backup running back could turn into embarrassingly little depth in a very short time. Bobby Rainey is becoming a more important player by the day, although this could end up being minor for James when the dust settles. |

Buccaneers | Bobby Rainey and Mike James likely to compete for backup job Fri Aug 15, 04:15 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bobby Rainey and RB Mike James are likely to compete for the back up running back job behind Doug Martin. RB Jeff Demps may also be in the mix as a situational player.
Footballguys view: Keep an eye on both guys in the preseason here. Both James and Rainey looked good in limited duty last year. James got banged up after Doug Martin went down, which opened the door for Rainey. The former Western Kentucky back looked good against bad defenses but struggled against better teams. |

Buccaneers | Want to use rotation at RB Fri Jun 20, 04:15 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RBs Bobby Rainey, Mike James, Charles Sims and Jeff Demps will be vying for carries behind RB Doug Martin in training camp. Martin is the team's starting running back, but the team wants to use a rotation in the backfield.
Footballguys view: Do they or don't they? We've heard the team will use a RBBC, then we've heard that Doug Martin is the man. We'll see how this shakes out in training camp. Martin will be splitting a bit of time with rookie Charles Sims. Martin's current ADP is RB12 (2.12) in 12-team PPR leagues. |

Buccaneers | Charles Sims' likely role Fri May 30, 09:22 AM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Charles Sims is the most likely among the backups to have a weekly role behind starter Doug Martin, in the opinion of Scott Smith, because of Sims' ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. Martin will probably cede a few carries and third-down work to Sims.
Footballguys view: Sims is one of the best all-purpose backs to come out in the draft this year. He's basically a poor man's version of Matt Forte (Bears). Sims has the speed to get to the second level quickly, and he is not afraid to run between the tackles. He is also a fantastic receiver out of the backfield who can make defenders miss in the open field. |

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mike James (ankle) said he is happy with the progress he has made in his recovery from an ankle injury and that he has been able to run and cut. James would not said if he will participate in the team's upcoming minicamp.
Footballguys view: Good news for the Buccaneers here. Monitor James during training camp as he'll be competing with Bobby Rainey for the primary backup job behind Doug Martin. That's critical information for those wanting to handcuff a back to Martin in their fantasy drafts. |

Buccaneers | Mike James' season over Tue Nov 12, 03:35 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano said RB Mike James (ankle) will miss the rest of the year with a broken left ankle.
Footballguys view: Bad news for the Buccaneers here. They're moving on without Doug Martin or James. Now the Bucs will turn to Brian Leonard and Bobby Rainey as their main duo in the backfield. Rainey is a nice change of pace back with good speed in the open field. Leonard is a fullback who can catch passes and pick up tough yards between the tackles. |

Buccaneers | Mike James won't affect Doug Martin Thu Nov 7, 12:33 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano said the recent success of RB Mike James has no bearing on the decision whether RB Doug Martin (shoulder) plays again this year. Martin has been inactive since Oct. 20 and will need surgery on his left shoulder at some point in the offseason. James ran for 158 yards in Week 9 against the Seattle Seahawks and is averaging 4.6 yards on 55 carries.
Footballguys view: As we said earlier, the Bucs know what they have in Martin and are thinking long term. They won't threaten his spot nor allow him to worry enough to rush back prematurely. Besides it's been too few games for anyone to get too excited about James--let's see how the season finishes. |

Buccaneers | Mike James solid Mon Nov 4, 11:29 AM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mike James rushed 28 times for 158 yards against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 9.
Footballguys view: James did what he usually does; he runs tough between the tackles and takes what the defense gives him. The Buccaneers played with a lead against the Seahawks early on, and that allowed them to continue featuring James and the ground game. |

Buccaneers | Doug Martin misses practice Thu Oct 31, 08:15 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Doug Martin (shoulder) did not participate in practice Thursday, Oct. 31.
Footballguys view: We know he'll be out for the foreseeable future so this is no surprise. Mike James has a tough row to hoe against the Seattle Seahawks who will be looking to regain their mojo after allowing rookie Zac Stacy 134 yards. They can be run on but James is a flex start this week at best. |

Buccaneers | Optimistic about Doug Martin Thu Oct 24, 04:27 PM
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are optimistic that they'll have RB Doug Martin (shoulder) back at some point this season since they play one game in the next 18 days after their Week 8 contest Thursday, Oct. 24. Martin will strengthen his shoulder and wear a harness over the next 18 days, and the target date for his return is Nov. 11. If he experiences a setback, he'll be shut down for the season.
Footballguys view: While it may help the Bucs to be back, they're all but eliminated for a playoff spot so you have to wonder if risking further harm to their stud running back is wise or just a last ditch effort to save Greg Schiano's rear end. Martin wants to come back, but sometimes what a player wants and what is best for his career aren't the same thing. Hopefully if they bring him back he doesn't re-injure or further aggravate his injury. If he does come back, his fantasy value is negligible, as he has been a bust all season long in an offense which sometimes looks like a Shakespearean tragedy and others a sequel to Dumb and Dumber. |

Buccaneers | Mike James solid in relief Mon Oct 21, 01:35 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mike James was solid in filling in for injured RB Doug Martin (shoulder) in the team's Week 7 game. James carried the ball 14 times for 45 yards. "You hate to see anyone go down, but it felt good to get out there and help,'' said James, who had only three carries for 12 yards going into Sunday's matchup. "From the first time I played football, I always wanted to run with a lean."
Footballguys view: James is a no-nonsense rookie with little flash to his game. He'll take what the defense gives you as a hard-charging between the tackles runner. James is going to be a hot waiver wire pickup this week, but even on his best day we can't see him as anything more than a low end RB2. |
