Falcons | Atlanta 32nd in defensive spending    Thu Feb 25, 07:55 PM

The Atlanta Falcons have $27.364 million invested in defensive players as free agency approaches. The Falcons are projected to be $29.35 million under the cap. DE Tyson Jackson is the most expensive defender with a cap hit of $6.35 million in 2016.

Footballguys view: They need some help on both sides of the ball, so while they might want to spend all their cap room on defense, they might need to spread it around more and include the offense. That said, you get what you pay for and Atlanta paid very little to end up as the No. 26 defense per Football Outsiders DVOA metric.

Falcons | Tyson Jackson coming on board    Tue Mar 11, 04:41 PM

The Atlanta Falcons agreed to terms with free-agent DE Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) on Tuesday, March 11, according to a source. The deal is reportedly a five-year, $25 million contract.

Footballguys view: The Scott Pioli connection comes into play here. He's the new Falcons assistant general manager, and the former general manager of the Chiefs. Pioli selected Jackson with the third overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft. Jackson was a bust for the Chiefs, so it's surprising he would get a first day deal for this price tag.

Chiefs | Coach impressed with Tyson Jackson    Mon May 27, 02:34 PM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he has been impressed with how DE Tyson Jackson has worked on improving his play this offseason. 'I've been impressed since we've been together here. Not many guys are going to outwork him on the field. Pass rush was not his forte, but he's working like crazy to get better. As a coach, that's all you can ask for. He's a big man who can move a little bit,' Reid said.

Footballguys view: Jackson has never played up to his potential as a pro. We'll see if that changes this year under the Andy Reid regime.

Chiefs | Releasing Tyson Jackson would create a lot of cap space    Sat Mar 2, 01:28 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs would create around $15 million in salary cap space if they release DE Tyson Jackson this offseason.

Footballguys view: Jackson (and former college teammate Glenn Dorsey) has been a disappointment during his time with the Chiefs. They used the third overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft to add him and he hasn't made the impact many expected.

Chiefs | DE a draft possibility     Wed Feb 13, 11:35 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs could potentially select a defensive end prospect with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, particularly with DE Tyson Jackson's future in doubt.

Footballguys view: The only defensive lineman who can play DE in a 3-4 that is a possible pick at #1 right now is Utah defensive tackle Star Lotulelei. That would make four defensive linemen taken in the top 11 of the draft in the last six years.

The Kansas City Chiefs may look to restructure DE Tyson Jackson's contract this offseason because he is scheduled to make around $15 million next season. The team could also decide to release him during the offseason to gain salary cap space.

Footballguys view: Jackson has not played up to his draft slot, but has not been a complete bust. He's a solid player who should have been drafted later instead of being a top 3 pick like his was in the 2009 NFL Draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs could look to select a defensive end with the No. 11 overall pick in the NFL Draft after the team restructured the contract of DL Tyson Jackson.

Footballguys view: Mississippi State DL Fletcher Cox or North Carolina DL Quinton Coples could be the targets. We think Cox will be off the board by the time the Chiefs select. Coples could develop into a Julius Peppers like DE if he plays up to his potential.
