Texans | Reduce roster by 18 players    Fri Aug 31, 04:05 PM

The Houston Texans have released RB Jonathan Grimes, FB Moran Norris, SS Eddie Pleasant, TE Logan Brock, DE Keith Browner, LB D.J. Bryant, DT Loni Fangupo, DE David Hunter, WR Juaquin Iglesias, LB Delano Johnson, DE Mitch King, LB Shawn Loiseau, WR Jeff Maehl, OT Nate Menkin, LB Rennie Moore, TE Phillip Supernaw, C Cody Wallace and OG Cody White.

Footballguys view: Grimes was a hit early in training camp, and he should get offered a roster spot. If injuries hit the Texans backfield hard this year, we could be talking about Grimes again.

Texans | Several receivers battling for roster spot    Sun Jun 3, 12:03 AM

Houston Texans WRs Keshawn Martin and DeVier Posey, two undrafted free agents, are among several receivers battling for roster spots. WRs Trindon Holliday, Juaquin Iglesias, Jerrell Jackson, Mario Louis and Jeff Maehl are also in the mix, and the team is expected to sign a couple more veteran receivers to compete. 'I like this group,' head coach Gary Kubiak said. 'I like their ability. They've come a long way (in six OTAs).'

Footballguys view: We think Martin and Posey win roster spots this year. Holliday may also be able to win a spot with the team because he's versatile. He's built like Darren Sproles and can be used effectively as a change of pace RB, slot WR, or return man.

Bears | Dan LeFevour, two others released    Sat Sep 4, 08:32 PM

The Chicago Bears have released QB Dan LeFevour, WR Juaquin Iglesias and DL Jarron Gilbert.

Bears | Juaquin Iglesias on the way out    Sat Sep 4, 12:46 PM

The Chicago Bears are going to release WR Juaquin Iglesias, reports Michael C. Wright, of ESPNChicago.com. He was a third-round draft choice in 2009.

Footballguys view: Iglesias never got a foothold with this team, but he is still very young and has enough ability that we wouldn't completely write him off. He should at least get signed to a practice squad.

Bears | Juaquin Iglesias able to do light running    Fri Aug 6, 05:42 PM

Chicago Bears WR Juaquin Iglesias (quadriceps) has been able to do some light running on the side the last two days, but he has missed the last five practices and remains day-to-day, reports the Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs. Iglesias added five pounds to reach 200 this offseason, but he'll likely need to beat out WRs Rashied Davis and Eric Peterman to make the final roster.

Footballguys view: Iglesias may be in danger of getting cut only one year after getting selected in the third round. We think he would be claimed pretty quickly by some WR poor teams if that happened.

Bears | Iglesias from zip to hip?    Sat Jun 19, 07:18 PM

CBSSports.com reports Bears second-year WR Juaquin Iglesias thinks he can go the Earl Bennett route (or Robert Meachem route) by making an impact after not catching a pass as a rookie. Iglesias has shown flashes in offseason practices and hopes to make more of an impact in 2010. "I am just ready, man," he said. "I feel like I was ready last year and I just didn't get the opportunity."

Footballguys view: Iglesias has the skill set that fits the Mike Martz system perfectly. He understands coverage and is a fearless receiver over the middle. The Bears should have a much improved passing game with Martz running the show, and Iglesias will certainly be in the mix. Right now he's competing for playing time behind starters Johnny Knox and Devin Hester with Earl Bennett and Devin Aromashodu.

Bears | WR coach says Iglesias 'continues to get better'    Fri May 14, 06:50 PM

Larry Mayer, from ChicagoBears.com, reports the Bears are confident in ascending young receivers Devin Hester, Devin Aromashodu, Earl Bennett and Johnny Knox. But that doesn't mean that Juaquin Iglesias won't have a chance to earn some playing time. "He's going to have an opportunity to be right there fighting for one of those spots," WR coach Darryl Drake said. "That's what happens in this league. He continues to get better, and we'll see what happens. He's improved in all areas, just understanding the pro game and the things you have to do as far as how to work, how to run routes and just being consistent day-in and day-out. I think he's improved in all facets of the game--mentally and physically--and that's what you have to do."

Footballguys view: Iglesias was the Bears leading receiver in the preseason last year, but was lost in the shuffle and didn't hit the field in the regular season until the end of the year. He's currently the sixth WR on the depth chart and will have to prove that he can fit into the Mike Martz system if he wants to get onto the field this year.

Vaughn McClure, of the Chicago Tribune, reports Chicago Bears WR Juaquin Iglesias could be active Week 17 due to injuries at wide receiver.

Bears | Knox at split end, Iglesias at flanker    Mon Aug 10, 01:31 AM

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports that WR Johnny Knox is working behind Earl Bennett at the "X" or split end, and Juaquin Iglesias is working behind Devin Hester at the "Z" or flanker, in addition to getting some work in the slot. Biggs also writes that "One of the explanations given for Bennett's slow development a year ago was that he was being forced to learn both outside positions and the slot, and that is a burden for any newcomer."

Bears | Iglesias confident about his role    Sat Jul 25, 03:54 PM

Vaugh McClure, from the Chicago Tribune, reports Iglesias, the third-round pick from Oklahoma, remains confident about his role this coming season. He expressed his thoughts during an interview with nflplayers.com. "They said I have to work for it, but that I have a chance to play on the field just like everybody else," Iglesias told the Web site when asked about the possibility of cracking the starting lineup. "So, I'm excited to get to work. I plan on playing."

Footballguys view: He led the Sooners in catches and receiving yards the last 2 seasons, but will have to work his way up the depth chart in Chicago. He will battle fellow rookie Johnny Knox and veteran Rashied Davis for the starting slot receiver job.

Bears | Knox looks like first or second-round pick    Mon Jun 15, 09:05 PM

Larry Mayer, of ChicagoBears.com, reports that Johnny Knox has impressed with hands, speed, and quickness, and looked like a first or second-round pick, not a fifth-round pick, in OTAs.

Footballguys view: He also said third-round pick Juaquin Iglesias has come on and the battle between the two rookie receivers should be a "great competition", although it's difficult for any wide receiver to emerge as a rookie.

Bears | Bennett and Knox impress in OTAs    Mon Jun 15, 08:31 PM

Mike Mulligan, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports that second-year wideout Earl Bennett might be the most improved player on the team, and that rookie fifth-round pick Johnny Knox looks like he'll contribute immediately.

Footballguys view: There's a void in the Bears wide receiver corps as long as they don't sign Plaxico Burress, and these two players should team up to fill it. Devin Hester will be the big play receiver, tight end Greg Olsen will work the middle of the field, with Bennett and Knox finding the soft spots in the coverage from the outside and slot respectively. Offensive coordinator Ron Turner made sure to point out that Bennett's improvement and newfound maturity started before the team acquired his college teammate, Jay Cutler. Mulligan said Knox could have a much better rookie season than Juaquin Iglesias, even though Iglesias was drafted two rounds ahead of him.

Bears | Gilbert, Iglesias contract updates    Wed Jun 10, 06:53 PM

Updating a previous report, Larry Mayer, of ChicagoBears.com, reports Chicago Bears DE Jarron Gilbert and WR Juaquin Iglesias signed four-year contracts. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Bears now have all of their draft picks signed, which is usually how they conduct their business at this time of year. We wonder why it's so hard for the other teams to follow suit.

Bears | Iglesias signed    Wed Jun 10, 06:07 PM

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports the Chicago Bears have signed third-round draft choice WR Juaquin Iglesias. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Iglesias should challenge for the starting slot receiver in his first year. He is a solid possession receiver that can make a defense pay if they do not respect the underneath routes. He has additional value because he can return kicks if need be. Iglesias will have to beat out Rashied Davis and fellow rookie Johnny Knox for the starting slot position.

Bears | Kirwan thinks Iglesias could have a Royal impact    Sun May 17, 03:06 PM

NFL.com's Pat Kirwan, in a segment on CBSSports.com, suggests that third-round pick Juaquin Iglesias could make the kind of impact as a rookie that Royal did in his first season last year with the Denver Broncos.

Footballguys view: Iglesias has some experience working out of the slot from his days at Oklahoma. However, don't put him in the starting slot role just yet because he will have to prove himself against some tough competition in camp. Rashied Davis and fellow rookie Johnny Knox will both put up a fight with Iglesias for playing time.

Bears | Juaquin Iglesias could contribute immediately    Sun May 3, 01:56 PM

The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reports that since wide receiver is considered a Bears weakness, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound Iglesias will have a chance to contribute immediately, unlike last year's third-round pick, wide receiver Earl Bennett, who failed to catch a pass all season.

Footballguys view: Iglesias has a fearless nature that shows when he's running routes over the middle or returning punts and kicks. He is more quick than fast, but is a crisp route runner. Bears WR coach Darryl Drake said, "We may accelerate (Iglesias') progress a little." The Bears will surely be a more prolific passing team in 2009, and it will be interesting to see who emerges as favorite targets for Jay Cutler.

Bears | Clark believes Iglesias is a perfect fit    Wed Apr 29, 02:23 PM

Jeff Dickerson, of ESPN.com, reports Chicago Bears TE Desmond Clark said he believes WR Juaquin Iglesias is a perfect fit for the team's offensive scheme. 'He is the perfect type of receiver for our offense. Obviously, we were looking for a little help at receiver, and I think this guy can make an impact immediately,' Clark said.

Footballguys view: Iglesias has a fearless nature that shows when he's running routes over the middle or returning punts and kicks. He is more quick than fast, but is a crisp route runner. He doesn't have the straight line speed to get deep, and he'll have to make his way in the NFL as a complimentary receiver. Sooners WR's have failed to get off to fast starts in the NFL. Mark Clayton, Mark Bradley, Brandon Jones all struggled early in their careers. We'll see if Desmond Clark is right and if Iglesias can break the trend for Sooners receivers his rookie year.

Bears | Adding a veteran wide receiver seems unlikely    Mon Apr 27, 03:16 PM

Brad Biggs, of The Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Angelo hasn't ruled out signing a veteran wide receiver. However, because of his comments during a radio show on Mulley and Hanley on 670-AM, it seems unlikely. The Bears drafted three receivers - Juaquin Iglesias (third round), Johnny Knox (fifth) and Derek Kinder (seventh) - and Angelo is counting on WR Earl Bennett to emerge. Angelo said he told head coach Lovie Smith he feels good about the three rookies and doesn't feel near the need to go out and add a receiver post-draft as he did before it.
