Patriots | Brian Hoyer contract update    Sun Mar 22, 04:01 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Colts) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the New England Patriots Sunday, March 22, worth $2 million.

Footballguys view: Hoyer will be a backup for the Patriots once again. This is his third stint with the team and if he sees the field the team won't go in the tank.

Patriots | New England adding Brian Hoyer    Sun Mar 22, 03:31 PM

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Colts) agreed to terms with the New England Patriots Sunday, March 22. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Here we go again. Hoyer has been with the Patriots a couple of times before after the team picked him up as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State back in 2009. He'll be a backup for the Patriots once again.

Patriots | Brian Hoyer could join Pats    Sat Mar 21, 06:15 PM

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Colts) is open to signing with the New England Patriots this offseason in a backup role.

Footballguys view: He could sign for a third stint with the Patriots to be a veteran backup. The Patriots may sign a veteran quarterback to be a starter in free agency (Cam Newton?), but they could also roll with second-year pro Jarrett Stidham as their starter. If the latter is the case, then they'd really need an experienced backup like Hoyer.

Colts | Brian Hoyer let go    Sat Mar 21, 04:08 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Brian Hoyer was released Saturday, March 21.

Footballguys view: With Philip Rivers signed as the starter, the Colts had to clear some room in the quarterback room. Hoyer is a seasoned veteran backup and he should land somewhere in the same role for the 2020 season.

Colts | Brian Hoyer getting start Sunday    Sat Nov 9, 12:32 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Brian Hoyer will get the start Sunday, Nov. 10, against the Miami Dolphins after QB Jacoby Brissett (knee) was ruled out.

Footballguys view: It's the best move for the Colts. They're playing a hapless Dolphins team and can get the win with Hoyer under center. We should see Brissett back as the starter in Week 11 against the Jaguars.

Colts | Brian Hoyer tosses three TDs in relief    Sun Nov 3, 04:17 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Brian Hoyer completed 17-of-26 passes for 168 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Week 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers in relief of the injured QB Jacoby Brissett (knee).

Footballguys view: The Colts offense was functional with Hoyer and he should be able to exploit the Dolphins defense if Brissett can't go next week. The Colts lost a heartbreaker in a situation where this outcome could end up being the difference between a playoff spot and staying home, although they should be able to recover in the standings next week.

Colts | Brian Hoyer signs with Colts    Mon Sep 2, 09:46 AM

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Patriots) signed a three-year, $12 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts Monday, Sept. 2.

Footballguys view: Hoyer gives the Colts a veteran backup behind Jacoby Brissett. Earlier this year, the NFL suspended Colts QB Chad Kelly two games for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

Broncos | Denver interested in Brian Hoyer    Sat Aug 31, 02:46 PM

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Patriots) is receiving interest from the Denver Broncos, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Don't be surprised to see this move made. Joe Flacco doesn't have a healthy backup right now with 2019 second-round pick Drew Lock (thumb) banged up. Hoyer played under Broncos OC Rich Scangarello when the two were with the 49ers in 2017.

Patriots | Brian Hoyer off roster    Sat Aug 31, 01:56 PM

New England Patriots QB Brian Hoyer was released Saturday, Aug. 31.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have rookie Jarrett Stidham now as the primary backup to Tom Brady. Hoyer should get plenty of interest from teams in need of a veteran reserve at the quarterback position. In fact, don't be surprised if the Broncos give him a shot to be the backup to Joe Flacco in 2019.

Patriots | Three QBs filling in during workouts    Mon May 27, 01:31 AM

New England Patriots QBs Danny Etling, Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham are splitting up the workload in voluntary organized team activities with QB Tom Brady not participating for the second year in a row.

Footballguys view: When the work becomes mandatory, Brady will be in attendance. We'll see how the depth chart behind Brady shapes up during training camp and the preseason. Hoyer is the seasoned veteran who could be the primary backup for Brady with the Patriots still in a Super Bowl window. Stidham is the interesting rookie we like in dynasty formats. We'll see if the fourth-round pick out of Auburn can develop and learn behind one of the greatest.

Patriots | Brian Hoyer terms    Thu Nov 2, 10:19 AM

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots QB Brian Hoyer will make $7.776 million in 2017, $3.815 million in 2018 and $3.05 million in 2019. The 49ers owe him $7.3 million and $2.9 million in 2017 and 2018, and the Patriots will pay him $476,000 and $915,000, respectively.

Footballguys view: Hoyer is a safety net, which he knows and is OK with. For the Patriots it is a smart signing, given how well he knows the offense. In the unlikely event the immortal Tom Brady gets hurt, Hoyer can keep the wheels from falling off.

Patriots | Brian Hoyer returns to New England    Wed Nov 1, 12:05 PM

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (49ers) is set to sign a three-year contract with the New England Patriots on Wednesday, Nov. 1.

Footballguys view: After trading away Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers, the Patriots were without a backup quarterback. It was an easy call to go back to Hoyer. He began his career in the NFL as an undrafted free agent for New England back in 2009. Hoyer spent a couple of seasons with the Patriots before bouncing around to six other NFL teams.

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer was released Monday, Oct. 30, according to a source.

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer was benched during the team's Week 6 game and has been replaced by QB C.J. Beathard.

Footballguys view: Beathard has a college connection with tight end George Kittle. He could be a streaming option in deep leagues against the vulnerable Cowboys defense next week.

San Francisco 49ers Brian Hoyer will remain in the starting quarterback job for the time being, as coach Kyle Shanahan told media he has 'not given any consideration' to a QB change.

Footballguys view: The dreaded vote of confidence for Hoyer means get ready for rookie C.J. Beathard if the struggles for the veteran quarterback continue.

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer completed 23 of 37 passes for 332 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a 41-39 loss to the Los Angeles Rams Thursday, Sept. 21.

Footballguys view: Hoyer's first play was an interception that nearly came back for a touchdown, but he recovered from there to play a strong game, including good deep passing. He wasn't able to convert a two-point conversion late to tie the game, but he did enough to hold off the calls for CJ Beathard heading into a matchup with Arizona.

49ers | Brian Hoyer impressive in camp    Sun Aug 6, 02:42 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer has looked 'very sharp' in training camp so far, according to the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows.

Footballguys view: Hoyer is relatively capable of not being awful, which is definitely faint praise. Considering how much of a mess everyone expects the Niners to be offensively this season, all he has to do is not be a dumpster fire under center and we'll all label his time a success. That being said, he's an absolute 'avoid' in all fantasy formats even if Matt Barkley or CJ Beathard never steal the job mid-season.

49ers | Brian Hoyer leading players' camp    Tue Jul 11, 03:24 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer is heading what is dubbed 'Camp Hoyer' prior to the start of training camp. At least 10 quarterbacks, wide receivers, tight ends and running backs attended workouts Monday, July 10, and Tuesday, July 11.

Footballguys view: Hoyer knows the Kyle Shanahan system from his days in Cleveland, so he can continue to build chemistry with his new teammates. The 49ers aren't anywhere near competing for a playoff spot, but from a fantasy perspective we like the upside of some of there skill position players -- Pierre Garcon specifically. He should be able to outperform his current ADP of WR35 (7.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Team keeping tabs on 2018 QB class    Wed Jun 28, 08:24 PM

Chris Biderman, from NinersWire/USA Today, notes San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch is keeping tabs on the 2018 quarterback class. "We understand that you have to have a big-time, franchise quarterback to have the success on a year-in and year-out basis like we want to," Lynch said on KNBR's Gary and Larry this week. "I've looked at it some, just in studying the players in (the 2018) draft, there's a quality class coming."

Footballguys view: The 49ers don't have a franchise quarterback right now. Brian Hoyer should be their starter this year with Matt Barkley backing him up. Behind those two, rookie C.J. Beathard will try to stick on the team as a developmental prospect. We think the 49ers would jump at the chance to add someone like Kirk Cousins (Washington) if he becomes available in free agency. They will also likely be in position to select a quarterback in the 2018 NFL draft with a top-10 pick...maybe even no1 overall.

49ers | George Kittle standing out    Thu Jun 15, 09:34 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle received the most first-team reps of any rookie during OTAs and has 'really good football awareness,' according to quarterback Brian Hoyer.

Footballguys view: Coming out of Iowa, Kittle reminded many in the scouting community of Charles Clay (Bills). Like Clay, Kittle is an H-back type who can be relied on for yards after the catch. Kittle is currently fourth on the depth chart but keep an eye on his progress in camp if you play in dynasty leagues.

49ers | Brian Hoyer feels comfortable    Mon May 29, 05:44 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer is confident heading into his second stint with head coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan was the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator in 2014 when Hoyer quarterbacked the Browns.

Footballguys view: That comfort level could put him atop the depth chart when the regular season begins. Hoyer said his familiarity with Shanahan's offense makes it easier for him to call plays, adding that it comes naturally to him now. He's competing with Matt Barkley for the team's starting job in 2017. Rookie C.J. Beathard is on board as a developmental prospect.

49ers | C.J. Beathard third on depth chart    Sat Apr 29, 12:33 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer is No. 1 on the depth chart, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, followed by QB Matt Barkley and QB C.J. Beathard. 'We are bringing C.J. here to develop,' Shanahan said.

Footballguys view: Beathard is an interesting developmental quarterback. He's got the ability to stretch the field with his arm strength, and Beathard does a good job with bucket throws. They'll need to work on his intermediate and short accuracy if Beathard is ever to develop into a starting option.

49ers | Brian Hoyer wants to start     Thu Mar 16, 11:14 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer said he won't be content being a backup quarterback, and he believes he will have a leg up in a quarterback competition because he is familiar with head coach Kyle Shanahan's system.

Footballguys view: Hoyer is a "bridge" quarterback for the 49ers, but nobody knows where the bridge leads. They have been linked to rumored trades for Kirk Cousins (Washington), but they may have to wait until 2018 when he hits the free agent market. If they don't find their next quarterback, there's a chance Hoyer could play quite a bit in 2017 for the rebuilding 49ers.

49ers | No QB for San Francisco at No. 2?    Sun Mar 12, 08:55 PM

The San Francisco 49ers are likely looking at positions other than quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft after signing QB Brian Hoyer and QB Matt Barkley, according to Bucky Brooks of NFL.com.

Footballguys view: The 49ers have plenty of time to find their next franchise QB. They won't rush it by overdrafting a QB in a bad class for passers. We still feel the 49ers get Kirk Cousins, either by trade this year or as a free agent next year.

49ers | San Francisco still in QB market    Sat Mar 11, 11:20 AM

The San Francisco 49ers will continue to look for quarterbacks this offseason despite signing Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley in free agency, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, who added he doesn't know whether the team will address the position in the free agency or the draft.

Footballguys view: The team is still in the market for Kirk Cousins. We could see Cousins and Shanahan reunited, whether it's this year via trade or next year as a free agent. The 49ers have time to build things the right way, and they're not going to rush any decision at the most important position in football.

49ers | Brian Hoyer on San Francisco's radar?    Fri Feb 17, 10:22 PM

Chicago Bears impending free-agent QB Brian Hoyer could be pursued by the San Francisco 49ers, according to beat writer Matt Barrows.

Footballguys view: The 49ers don't have to rush to find their franchise quarterback. However, they could use a veteran like Hoyer to start while a young player is groomed (or while they wait to find him).

Bears | Brian Hoyer could stay as mentor    Tue Feb 14, 02:51 PM

Chicago Bears impending free-agent QB Brian Hoyer is a logical choice to be re-signed if the Bears draft a rookie quarterback, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Jeff Dickerson. Hoyer is open to mentoring younger players and also still has some fuel left in the tank after throwing over 1,400 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions in six games last year.

Footballguys view: If (when?) the Bears move on from Jay Cutler, keeping Hoyer around as a mentor would be a wise idea. The team is currently expected to select a quarterback with the 3rd-overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. Mitch Trubisky (North Carolina) may be the player they target to lead their franchise into the future. Having Hoyer as a mentor would help as Trubisky is a talented but mechanically raw player who needs more development.

Bears | Brian Hoyer to become free agent    Sun Jan 15, 06:10 PM

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: Hoyer was limited to six games this year with the Bears. A fractured forearm ended his season after he threw for 1,445 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. Some team in need of an experienced QB should be interested in the 31-year old veteran...most likely as depth.

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (arm) underwent surgery on his left arm Monday, Oct. 24, and his timetable has been reduced to six weeks instead of eight.

Footballguys view: Hoyer may not be shut down for the year with this injury, but he won't be starting anytime soon. Matt Barkley looked bad in relief duty, so we could see Jay Cutler back in the starting lineup. Cutler has been recovering from a thumb injury, but he is their best starting option with Hoyer recovering from surgery.

Updating previous items, Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (forearm) will not return to the Thursday, Oct. 20, game against the Green Bay Packers due to a forearm injury.

Footballguys view: It's Matt Barkley time! We'll see what the former USC quarterback has after failing to catch on elsewhere. Luckily the Packers defense isn't at its best tonight. Unfortunately for Barkley, neither is the Bears offensive line nor any other part of the offense.

Updating a previous item, Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (forearm) is headed for X-rays following an injury to his left forearm, which is his non-throwing arm. He is considered questionable to return.

Footballguys view: Matt Barkley is in the game and doing well enough, though the Packers defense isn't exactly playing Hall of Fame level defense. An extended look at Barkley is useful though, so if you can stomach the level of overall play, keep your eyes glued.
